Here the recording shows a number of Iraqi police, some of whom had fired their AKs, now scattering like the normal and rational men they were, some running right past the Marines, who had three seconds left to live. For about two seconds more, the recording shows the Marines firing their weapons nonstop. The truck's windshield explodes into shards of glass as their rounds take it apart and tear into the body of the son of a bitch trying to get past them to kill their brothers - American and Iraqi - bedded down in the barracks, totally unaware that their lives at that moment depended entirely on two Marines standing their ground. Yale and Haerter never hesitated. By all reports and by the recording, they never stepped back. They never even shifted their weight. With their feet spread shoulder-width apart, they leaned into the danger, firing as fast as they could. They had only one second left to live, and I think they knew. The truck explodes. The camera goes blank. Two young men go to their God. Six seconds. Not enough time to think about their families, their country, their flag, or about their lives or their deaths, but more than enough time for two very brave young men to do their duty.
Remembering Melvin Garten, America's Most Decorated Soldier Garten died a few weeks ago at age 97 and when he retired from active service he was the most decorated member of the US Army. After his death the New York Times ran obits of a trumpeter, food blogger, actress, golfer gratis but required his family to pay for a death notice. On the other hand the Village Voice ran a very nice article honoring his lifetime of service. He earned a CIB in three different wars among many other awards before a VietCong mine took his leg. Upon graduation from CCNY, he joined the Army and became a paratrooper. He then married his girlfriend, Ruth Engelman of the Bronx, in November 1942. She was a war bride. Everyone said the marriage wouldn't last, and they were right because the marriage ended on January 9, 2013 -- the day she died. Their sons were in their teens when the Vietnam War erupted. Melvin would earn his Combat Infantry Badge for the third time -- perfect attendance as those men of that distinction of serving in those three wars called their service. The Army put him in command of the 2nd Battalion, 237th Infantry in 1968 and he reinvigorated the unit, calling it the No Slack battalion. Just as he almost completed the turnaround, his jeep ran over a Vietcong mine, sending shrapnel to his leg and to his head. Another war, another Purple Heart, only this time it cost him his leg. The military sent him to Walter Reed to recuperate. Remembering the "Forgotten War" Remembering the rear guard of the Dunkirk evacuation who fought and died almost 75 years ago to the day for the most valuable thing in the world at that moment: a bit of time for others to escape to fight again another day. The best they could possibly hope for was to spend years as POWs. They succeeded in their mission. But the real heroes of Dunkirk were the British and French soldiers who took up positions to protect the port and the thousands of troops awaiting evacuation. Theirs was a thankless task; running short on food, ammunition and medical supplies, they were supposed to hold off the advancing Germans as long as possible, facing almost certain death or capture at the end of their mission. General Alan Brooke was ordered to mount a holding action with the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 50th divisions along the Ypres-Comines Canal while the rest of the BEF retired towards Dunkirk; General Ronald Adam, the III Corps Commander, was put in charge of establishing perimeter defenses around the port. A Veteran of WWI Speaks of His Experiences From an interview with William J. Lake in October 2003 when Lake was 107. He died the following year. He was a private in the U.S. Army's 91st ("Wild West") Division and served in a machine gun crew. "How did you cope with that?" Five Professional Athletes Who Died Serving Their Country (via WeaponsMan) CDR Salamander Praises Sebastian Junger's Article on PTSD I have to admit it, four times I avoided reading Sebastian Junger's bit over at Vanity Fair, How PTSD Became a Problem Far Beyond the Battlefield. A snippet: Suicide by combat veterans is often seen as an extreme expression of PTSD, but currently there is no statistical relationship between suicide and combat, according to a study published in April in the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry. Combat veterans are no more likely to kill themselves than veterans who were never under fire. The much-discussed estimated figure of 22 vets a day committing suicide is deceptive: it was only in 2008, for the first time in decades, that the U.S. Army veteran suicide rate, though enormously tragic, surpassed the civilian rate in America. And even so, the majority of veterans who kill themselves are over the age of 50. Generally speaking, the more time that passes after a trauma, the less likely a suicide is to have anything to do with it, according to many studies. Among younger vets, deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan lowers the incidence of suicide because soldiers with obvious mental-health issues are less likely to be deployed with their units, according to an analysis published in Annals of Epidemiology in 2015. The most accurate predictor of post-deployment suicide, as it turns out, isn't combat or repeated deployments or losing a buddy but suicide attempts before deployment. The single most effective action the U.S. military could take to reduce veteran suicide would be to screen for pre-existing mental disorders. Meanwhile back among the clueless fucks... It really is too fucking bad that we can't be bothered to hold onto what these guys paid for with their blood. So much blood, so many limbs, so much brain damage, so many years, and it's all gone. Miss Vendette,
you deserve all the praise you get. I'm sure of it. The offer alone raised my spirits that day (3? 4 years ago?) so much that I can't put it into words. The ex's kids were asking me why I was crying. I tried to explain, but only the older girl had visited with me before. Since then, I do what I can at the local cemetery to honor the fallen that no one else will ever visit again. It's a small gesture, for sure, but It's not completely altruistic. I really wish I could hear their stories... Small bone to pick with the quotation about "ordinary men doing extraordinary things". They were NOT ordinary. They were, and are, exceptional people. They are exceptional by virtue of the Founding fathers, who left the blueprints that allowed this land to flourish and become the most exceptional country the planet has ever seen. We WILL get through the present difficulty and once again be as Mr Reagan said,a shining city on a hill. Because of the legacy these men left us. My story of those who served, was that I was a little girl when the big dude (high school, natch) across the street bought his 1964 1/2 candy ass red Mustang and lovingly polished the wax into it on weekends. Then, he went away, dressed like a soldier, and then, I never saw him again, and the car parked along the driveway? The grass grew up around it and through the wheels. And we didn't have so many cookouts with those folks any more, his parents, because they didn't much care for socializing in the neighborhood any more.
Still makes me cry a little bit. And not for the car, although that thing was a beauty. So, when I was working on base in the late '80's and all the planes scrambled one afternoon around 3:00, I was pretty sure we were doing it all again, and I broke down a little and went straight to the Cathedral and whipped out my rosary for all those boys and parents and fabulous cars that wouldn't have owners any more. It sticks with you, you know? So I hope President Obama chokes on his ice cream, and if he doesn't that it gives him the worse heartburn he has ever had. That is all. Wife Little and I got to help a gentleman find his grandfather in the Garrison Veterans Cemetery today. We were walking and placing flags when he asked us if we knew the cemetery because he was looking for section D. Gingy looked it up on her phone and we walked over with him, then split up to scan for his grandfather, a Navy vet. I happened to find his stone. " Sir? Your grandfather is here.". I stepped away to leave and allow him his privacy, but he wanted to shake my hand and thank me. I hugged him instead and said " My family owes yours a debt ". He was sobbing and I confess things got a bit misty for me for a sec, for Gingy too I noticed. I'm glad Little got to see and experience some of the emotions of Memorial Day, it'll help him understand as he gets older.

Thoughts on Memorial Day:
Begged my then-fiance to enlist in a "safe" AF career field. Felt like a coward extracting that promise, but he's just so damn smart and good at his job that I know he's not very usefel on the pointy end of the spear. That photo posted this morning of the young fiance talking to a gravestone has always been hard for me, because I even though I know he'd be busy making God laugh, I wouldn't be able to resist talking to his grave. Even though my husband's in a "safe" career field, I know things can go bad very quickly. There was a fire on our flightline two weeks ago and while the firefighters did more damage cutting a hole in the aircraft than the actual fire, the crew was lucky to get out with only smoke inhalation. Stay safe and remember the fallen, Morons. Posted by: pookysgirl on the road to recovery at May 26, 2015 12:34 AM (zTnOj) Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian, at May 26, 2015 12:35 AM (3mTLw) 287

Awarded for actions during the Global War on Terror
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lance Corporal Brady A. Gustafson, United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as Turret Gunner, Lead Vehicle, 3d Squad, 2d Platoon, Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, Marine Corps Forces, Central Command (Forward), in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 21 July 2008. In the village of Shewan, Afghanistan, Lance Corporal Gustafson's squad was ambushed from multiple positions by enemy insurgents with rocket-propelled grenades and medium machine gun fire. The attack was initiated by a rocket-propelled grenade that pierced the hull of his Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle and struck him, resulting in severe traumatic injury to his right leg. Despite bleeding profusely, Lance Corporal Gustafson quickly identified enemy positions and engaged them with accurate fire from his M-240B machine gun while a tourniquet was applied to his leg. When the vehicle to their rear was disabled by further rocket-propelled grenade fire, he directed his driver to push the vehicle out of the enemy's kill zone, and shortly thereafter the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Although medium machine gun fire continued to impact around him, Lance Corporal Gustafson remained steadfast, returning concentrated fire on the enemy. His effective suppression allowed the Marines behind him to safely dismount and exit their burning vehicle. Lance Corporal Gustafson braved the effects of shock and reloaded his weapon twice, firing more than 400 rounds, before he allowed himself to be pulled from the turret and receive medical treatment. By his bold actions, daring initiative, and total devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Gustafson reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. Action Date: 21-Jul-08 Service: Marine Corps Rank: Lance Corporal Company: Company G Battalion: 2d Battalion Regiment: 7th Marines Division: Marine Corps Forces, Central Command (Forward) Posted by: beats27 at May 26, 2015 04:26 AM (V8L/P) 469

Looking at that photo of those two Marines firing on that truck roaring in ask yourself "what's wrong with this picture?" There's an old saying that heroes are usually made because somebody in charge fvcked up. That is certainly the case here.
Where are the barricades arranged so the truck has top make tight turns coming in. Where is their sandbag revetment? Why are they standing there upright in plain view of the truck with no protection at all? Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 26, 2015 07:01 AM (GpgJl) 480
And why are they firing on it using only light weapons? They needed a ma deuce to stop it a lot further away.
