Food Thread: Memorial Day Beer [Beerslinger]

This Memorial Day weekend we are free to drink and brew great beers thanks to all of those who made the big sacrifice.
Here's a feel good story about a WWII soldier, his helmet, and beer in Belgium.

Vincent Speranza, a former infantryman machine gunner with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment during WWII, inspects an M249 machine gun weapon system during an installation visit Oct. 6, 2013, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Speranza was at the base to visit paratroopers with the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, and to be a special guest at their regimental ball. Jeffrey Smith/U.S. Army

For those here who don't like beer, there's always kittehs and turntables....

Craft beer is now so widely available that most morons can find either a micro brewery or taproom within a 30-mile radius of wherever they may be. BeerMenus.com. tells you what good beers are currently on tap in your neighborhood. Here are some of the good beers I've found locally and would recommend...

Green Flash East Village Pilsner is a full bodied and somewhat hoppy Czech style pilsner, 5.3%, CA.

Downeast Cider House's 'Hard Honey' may well be the best cider I've ever had. 5.1% They're out of Massachusetts.

Stone scrapped its Ruination recipe and have come back with a bigger, better imperial IPA with their Ruination 2.0 series. It's divine. CA, 8.5%

Grapefruit Sculpin by Ballast Point in CA is ridiculously good. If you like IPAs, and you like Sculpin, then you really need to try this beer. 7%

Sometimes it takes a beer to face the press...Hillary Clinton answers questions at Smuttynose Brewery in New Hampshire...

For more beer news check out Ale Street News.

Anyone else around here had any good beers recently?

4 Two Brothers's Domain DuPage French Country Ale - 5.9% not spectacular, but pretty good..

And Goose Island Ten Hills Pale Ale (6.2% I think)

These are both brewed here in the Chicago area. Not sure if available outside the area, but should be.

I like obnoxious hops!

Haven't seen Two Brother's but Goose Island is widely available. Distribution opened up more after Anheuser Busch bought them out....they tinkered with a lot of the recipes but some are still good.

7 Bell's Best Brown Ale is good on tap. There was a local restaurant that had it on tap last winter, and it was great with a meal. Then I found some in 16 oz cans at a store, and drank one over Christmas.

Not as good.

Yet, just next door in Ohio, we have alcohol and beer freedom (sort of). You can buy hard liquor in supermarkets (the local Kroger has an excellent liquor and wine selection), and craft beers are everywhere.

Seems strange.

On the short list of things I miss about my beloved Clownifornia, now that I'm in Texas.

Ellis County is "moist" so I can buy beer/wine, but no liquor. Takes some getting used to. Also, make sure you stop at the brewery in Paso Robles when passing through. Used to get growlers when I drove through on the way to my brother's place to visit every month or so. They keep the really, really good stuff strictly on tap at the brewery or restaurant across the street. About 2 years ago they had their Taphouse Brown in the winter, and it was heaven. It's not a county by county thing. It might be based on local decisions. A lot of walmarts in Ohio will have the diluted versions. And for comparison in my home county: hometown the IGA grocery store has a liquor section, not even walled off or departed in any manner. You get your hard liquor and bring it up to the main cashier. The next town over I don't even know if they have an actual liquor store but their grocery store is only diluted. And then the next town over there is a dedicated liquor store, complete with drivethru.

It actually varies from store to store, depending on what the policy of any particular store is.

Some stores (like Giant Eagle and Meijer's) sell the watered-down stuff. Kroger's and some other stores have regular liquor for sale. It is really weird here-and-there kind of thing. And there are still normal liquor stores.

One of the most poignant things I ever heard was a few years ago on a TV show about excavating WWI trenches. The haul from the trenches wasn't very impressive, but the prof in charge noted that we were on the cusp of living memory turning into history. We've since moved past it.

He also noted that it was only a few years since the last WWI shellshock victim had died, in an insane asylum, after all those years. God bless his soul.

Radler.

87 Radler is the german name for a beer mixed with lemonade.
Leinenkugels calls their version Summer Shandy.

89 IllTemperedCur-What part of Ellis Co? I'm 20 miles over the line in Navarro. Napa Valley transplant. Some things take a little getting used to, but I have never looked back. Welcome!

90 BTW: Radlers are often compared to shandies. Some use citrus juice only, others get mixed with sodas. Traditional Lime and Lagers are even better, though, but all are refreshing on hot summer days, if anyone needs an excuse.

91 84 "What's it called?"

Personally I'd call it wrecking a good beer or crap.
Posted by: lowandslow at May 24, 2015 07:36 PM (dItuC)

Well, I agree, but what is bud lite?
I know crap.
But, sometimes you gotta make the best of it.
en famil so, strike a compromise.

92 Then again you have to throw some lemon into wheat beer to be able to drink that.

That's it Radler!
I went to the Berlin Zoo, then the Bombed Church, then had a Radler.

96 I'm not one to make a big deal about it, but I'm looking
at a picture of a dude handling an M240B or later model (I've never seen that bipod before) with a caption saying something about an M249 SAW. Not pictured is an M249 SAW.

103 Bundaberg Ginger Beer from down under. No alcohol needed, though I suppose the flavor of gin could be masked well enough in a frosty glass.

104 Here's an article about how lagers are gaining great popularity in the craft beer market. The brewery they focus on, Jack's Abby out of MA only makes lagers and all of their beers are good.

114 Urban Chestnut in St. Louis, MO. Co-owned by a German who worked as an executive for Anheuser-Busch for years and then started his own craft brewery. I believe he also happens to be a certified German Biermeister from Bavaria, and in my opinion his beers can hold up to the best of them. It's great getting a real, unfiltered Bavarian beer here in America.
