Evening Open Thread- Picture This Edition [Weirddave]

Here's a link to a whole bunch of neat pictures. I realize that it's click bait along the lines of "This man opened a can of paint. What he saw will make you question the existence of God!", but most of the pictures are neat, for example, this is Florida's oldest surviving Civil War veteran, Bill Lundy, in 1955:

Lundy.jpg

The end of the Volstead Act:

prohibition.jpg

Teaching children without access to water to swim:

Swimming.jpg

I love these last two, pictures of postwar America, brimming with hope and looking confidently to the future.

I want you to know that this blonde went home last night and did something probably none of you could do. I memorized all the state capitals." One of the guys, of course, said, "I don't believe you. 106 Yum! I made key lime pies last summer but with whipped cream instead of meringue.

We've got a key-lime tree. It's covered right now, and they're starting to fall off.

I actually prefer key-lime pie with whipping cream. It counters the tartness - where lemon doesn't need it as much and meringue is the perfect foil there.

If there's enough limes left over from the margaritas maybe a pie. Or a little tart sized pie. Or, suck on the lime and take a shot of tequila and whipping cream and take a bite out of a cracker and call it good.

Hey Hammer. A few minutes from our mountain place there is an old abandoned cemetery with about 8 tombstones, all from ~1878-80. One of the headstones is for a former soldier with some Civil War Unit out of Michigan. My failing memory tells me it was a cavalry unit, but wouldn't that be something if it were someone who had crossed paths with your g-grandfather?

And now we are in the last year of the Sesqui-Centennial and the end of the war when CSS Shenandoah commanded by LT James Iredell Waddell CSN sailed up the Mersey in London, berthed next to HMS Donegal, and surrendered his command to the Brits in November 1865 IIRC. 187 Used to be years ago one started in Masonry with the first 3 degrees, which are called the Blue Lodge. Some time later the York Rite of degrees 4-14, and the Scottish Rite of degrees 4-33 came along. Until recently in Texas, one had to be either York Rite or Scottish Rite to go into the Shrine. It was the same in S.C. Nowadays one can go from the Blue Lodge straight to the Shrine. I am 32nd degree Scottish Rite these past 35 years but not a Shriner (no motorcycle or jeep) just kidding, no time actually. And yes, Gen. Albert Pike CSA was the modern father of the Scottish Rite.

A stunningly gorgeous day out on the National Mall today. And such a lovely evening I just got back from a nature walk. I'm drinking it in because next week it's going to be Calcutta. Blecch.

Compiled a list of lootables from the National Gallery so I'll be ready when the Great Purge commences. Haseltine's "Natural Arch at Capri", a couple Turners for the foyer, and maybe a Monet to go over my sofa in the t.v. room.
