Fundamental Concepts - Born on Third Base [Weirddave]

In 1988 a Texas Politician, Jim Hightower, addressed the Democratic National Convention at Atlanta, Georgia, on July 19. In his speech, he famously said that the Republican nominee for President, George H.W. Bush, “Was born on third base and thinks he hit a triple”. It's a pithy turn of phrase, and today a lot of people credit Hightower with coining it.

That's nonsense, of course. Hightower, who at the time was the Texas Agricultural Commissioner (he lost a reelection bid to Rick Perry in 1991 amidst a bribery scandal), is the worst kind of progressive (his career has involved supporting Jessie Jackson, Ralph Nader and Jerry Brown for president), naturally he stole the phrase. The actual phrase goes back to at least the Depression era, maybe further, but whoever coined it originally certainly knew how to turn a phrase.

I've been thinking about this phrase a lot lately, although not with regard to Bush 41 (I wonder just how “privileged” Bush felt floating in the Pacific after his Avenger was shot down). No, this phrase comes to mind not as pertinent to individuals, but to groups as I watch a generation of gibbering idiots wail and gnash their teeth as they gleefully strive to tear down the foundation of the very society that makes their existence possible.

Societies change over time, I get that, and theoretically at least I have no problem with it. However that change should be an evolution, and not a devolution. That's what bothers me the most. None of these ideas trumpeted by the Left are new. They have all been tried before, and we know the result. Socialism does not lead to an egalitarian society, it produces a stratified one, with a little pocket of wealth and a whole lot of serfs. Jettisoning the rule of law for the rule of man doesn't result in prosperity, it results in poverty. Silencing freedom of speech creates intellectual stagnation. Forcing people to deny reality in favor of mandated, government approved “facts” gives a dysfunctional, paranoid population incapable of functioning as a greater whole. Unlike Caesar, these things ARE as constant as the Northern Star (and whoa Buddy, there's an historical precedent that's uncomfortable to examine closely). I can point to history, I can show where in the world today these policies are being implemented and the results. This isn't speculation, this isn't hypothesis, it is fact: cold, hard, demonstrable fact.

Nobody cares. This third base on which we find ourselves, this brilliant, shining city on a hill, why, of course it's the natural order of things. Things have been like this for their entire lives, there's no way life could be any different. Freedom and prosperity weren't created, they aren't the result of generations, no, millennia of human trial, effort, thought and debate, they just are.

You and I know that that's not the case, and the inability of many on the left to recognize this is one of the things that is so frustrating when interacting with Progs. Their flat out denial that it's true is one of the few things that fill me with a full-blown rage. The really sad thing is that by the historical evolution of current society, if they are successful they will find themselves in a world antithetical to their own best interests. Here's an example.

Activist gays never tire of pushing their agenda on society at large, an effort that culminated this week with the vilification of some poor Newfie jeweler who had no problem making rings for a lesbian couple's “wedding”, but when they found out that he personally believed in traditional marriage, it was Katy bar the door time. He was immediately cast as the week's Emmanuel Goldstein and the SJW and Gaystapo went into a frenzy.

What they claim they are doing: Fighting for “equality”. This is obviously bullshit because they were treated absolutely the same as any other customer. This is the third base they were born on (or at least the third base that exists today). Twenty years ago everyone would have looked at them askance if they claimed that two people of the same sex could get married, and 50 years ago their lesbianism would have been classified as a mental disorder. Instead, today, they walk into a shop, order a pair of custom rings for their “wedding”, are treated with courtesy and respect, and go on about their business. Equality is here. They made it. That's not even third base, that's home plate.

But that's not good enough, these people think they are still in the batter's box, desperately dodging chin music from a homophobic pitcher, so, since the jeweler personally believes in traditional marriage, he must be destroyed. So what happens, if, having achieved an objective, having convinced society at large of the rightness of their cause, a group keeps pushing further, demanding not just equal treatment, but preferential?

Backlash. This backlash can, in this case, take one of two forms. Either it occurs withing the context of the culture and outrageous demands for preferential treatment start being routinely ignored as spurious and even mocked by the population as a whole. This is a best case scenario, what I would call the normal functioning of a free society. On the other hand, if western society has been so weakened by constant attacks on its founding principles that it recoils from those principles and allows the demanding minority to get its way in the name of fairness or in fear of being called homophobic, then that society is ripe for takeover by a society more confident in its own founding principles. That's what is happening in Europe, the confident interloper is Islam, and I really don't think it all ends well for the gays.

Bottom line: We live in an incredibly free and prosperous society, one unmatched by any in human history. In our comfort and wealth, we have forgotten why this is so, and we are allowing the very things that created that freedom and prosperity to be destroyed by Leftists. THEY claim what will replace it will be better. Conservatives are pointing to history and demonstrating that it will not, but we're working from behind the 8-ball because so many people are (purposefully) ignorant of how we got here. That makes it childishly easy to take it all away.

Also, I think you're flirting around the edges of an excellent point (and I don't mean that in an insulting way...). I've been trying to verbalize an idea on this related subject for a while and can't quite come up with the right way to say it.

but essentially, yes, we live in a VERY fortuitous time compared to the rest of human history. But so many assume that this is just the natural course of things, when it clearly demonstrably isn't, and when they say they're "progressives" "progressing" toward a more perfect society... well, I can't help but wonder if their "progress" is really toward the opposite of a better society.

Anyways, just my two cents.

22 Posted by: Bigby's Knuckle Sandwich at May 23, 2015 10:57 AM (exJTj)

Yeah, I mean...

Basically I'd say the enlightenment and the political philosophies to come out of it WERE the most "progressive" (in the dictionary sense of the word, not the political) and "revolutionary" ideas at least since classical times.

Yet the political progressives seem hell bent on undoing that and returning us to some kind of... humanity status quo. Where we live like serfs, the select few are fabulously wealthy, and we live very unfulfilled, unhappy lives.

Like I said, I've been having a really hard time verbalizing the point I'm trying to make and succinctly sum it up. Which is why I'm in sales, not writing. But I think there's a good point in there somewhere.

36 I remember Hightower. And yes, after he got booted from office for corruption, he ended up for a little while with a radio talk show (during the first wave attempt to unseat Limbaugh and the other conservative radio hosts; it failed, just as the second one that occurred a few years ago did, for the simple reason that no one was listening to them). He was a joke, albeit a bad one. Listened to his show a couple of time, out of curiosity. He was all leftist platitudes and bullshit, and could not think his way out of a New Orleans whorehouse.

The problem with the gheys these days is that they DEMAND everyone else, not just tolerate, but positively accept, affirm and "celebrate" their lifestyles. And if you don't, they will now do their level best to destroy you. Because especially under the current regime, they can.

But as someone said upthread, I'm setting aside the popcorn for when Big Anus runs up against Big Islam. Hilarity will ensue, especially when Big Anus finds out what Big Islam's message is for the gheys:

"Homosexuality is wrong. The punishment is death".

That is an exact quote I got, about 35 years ago, from a Muzzie co-worker. He meant it then and he means it now. Gonna be REAL interesting to watch....

37 As gay marriage becomes the law of the land, the sex education classes that were developed to discourage teenage pregnancy must now be extended to normalize same sex liaisons. As anti bullying is mostly directed at not making fun of gays, it is most likely that judgment free reorientation between boys ell be the norm. That is not to say they will be gay, they well be bisexual like the ancient Greeks and Romans. Women and children did not fare well. And I don't think the current crop of "gay" men will do well either as it won't be femininity that is valued. Check out the Qafar period of Iranian art. Oy.

Yesterday morning, I started to get into a mild, friendly dispute with one of my "co-workers", who I believe, subscribes to many of these Leftist tropes, unthinkingly accepting them without understanding the underlying premises. I stopped well short of an argument, as I realized where this sort of disagreement would eventually lead.

We were all, so to speak, born on third base. Except for a relative handful that have sweated and bled overseas in the armed services, not many of us have had to do much of anything to redeem and sustain our Republic. I think the aristocracy has always hated America. The norm throughout human history has been noble families ruling by "divine right" (or because they killed off their rivals). America proved that a more egalitarian society, where you could become anything you wanted regardless of who your parents were, was not only possible, but it unleashed human creativity and wealth generation the likes of which the world has never seen.

This kind of competition scared the aristocrats shitless. They held their place at the top of society thanks to their vast family fortunes. Their privileged position became threatened by upstarts who could outthink or outproduce them. In some cases the upstarts themselves started thinking like aristocrats once they became successful. Suddenly they began to favor policies that would protect them from competition from newer upstarts. Once they made it, they wanted to pull the ladder up behind them.

The aristocrats of the 18th century signed the Declaration and the Constitution, but still insisted on their legal and moral right to own slaves. Beginning in the 19th century, aristocrats rebranded themselves as Socialists or Progressives. Their rhetoric was all about lifting up the bottom of society--that's how they got popular support--but the results of their policies has always been to cement the aristocracy into place, under new names like "Vanguard of the Proletariat" or "Nomenklatura". In some cases such as Communist revolutions, the old aristocracy was exterminated and a new one took its place. Meanwhile, the poor were no better off than before and were often worse off.

True, we get no choice in when we are born. There is no way I can ever experience trench warfare in WWI. I can, however, take the time to be aware of the reality of what it was. It's important to know just how we got to 3rd base and what 2nd and 1st bases were like, because the progs are dragging us towards second telling us it's home. Oh yes. That has been the common joke about Islam, well, forever, how much the supposedly ghey-hating Muslims boink each other in the pooper. Yes, good points.

There are DEFINITELY a large number in this country who consider THEMSELVES to be the "aristocracy."

Now, in reality, most of them are not considered the "aristocracy" by, you know, the people in the "aristocracy" -- but they parrot the "elite" in this country almost in a cargo cult way and they are the loudest proponents of "equality" and "redistribution" while they fly on their private jets from Marthas Vineyard to Napa Valley to go to a $35,000 a plate fundraiser for their "friends."

been like this for their entire lives, there's no way life could be any

Hence leftist tax and other economic policies. They seem not to realize that people will modify their behavior in view of those policies, and so are continually surprised when a one-third tax on $X does not result in $X/3 in revenue. It's as though they believe the present circumstances are chiseled into stone, immutable, and that no policy, however stupid, can affect those circumstances adversely.

66 An excellent post and one which gets to a salient point nobody talks about: no one, least of all Progs, will be able to live in the world they are creating.

It took centuries for the Church to make marriage something more than a contract of servitude and the greatest beneficiaries of that progress have been women.

This philosophy of victimhood sees villains in every teapot and destroys every person who embraces it.

There is no more unity. Just long knives. And after the jackboots of SSM beat Christians down, the crescent will will reign. It is already happening and the Progs are a better catalyst than the army of Saracens forming now in nearby Garland Texas.

Exactly.

Or the myriad of provisions in the tax code that allow the truly wealthy to, say, buy municipal bonds at 4% interest and not have to pay taxes on any interest paid at all. So if you're a billionaire, you could (in theory) load up on muni bonds, make millions a year by "coupon clipping" and effectively pay a 0% tax rate on that money.

It also has the benefit of making muni bonds more desirable to very wealthy people, which means municipalities can spend money more recklessly then they would otherwise be able to.

Not to derail the thread, but I always thought it was amusing that leftists advocated taxing cigarettes to discourage consumption in the name of public health.

104 Civilization kills its self. The very thing that people fight for, strive for, and work toward is what destroys all they were trying to accomplish. Because of sinful human nature, when we achieve comfort, safety, wealth, and ease, we forget what got us there. Worse, we begin to hold those values in contempt, considering virtues such as temperance, wisdom, and fortitude to be foolish and counterproductive.

Without a strong constant cultural backbone of ethical teaching such as a shared religious culture, civilizations begin to fall apart because they become self interested, self focused, hedonistic, and greedy.

What's more, luxuries become necessities. Things that you once considered something special and wonderful with use become something you think you can't live without. Many of us here are old enough to remember growing up with a rotary dial on a phone attached to the wall. But how many now think they cannot survive without their phone?

Its a regular cycle, a pattern of triumphant growth, decay, and collapse that happens over and over through human history. Its just happening really, really fast this time. It took a hundred years or so for England to go from controlling 1/3rd of the planet's land and all the seas to one island. I doubt it will take America more than a decade to crumble.

Well that's not entirely true; some kids do go hungry, but they are extremely rare and usually its the result of parents buying crack, meth, booze, or gambling with the food money. There are some very VERY poor, genuinely poverty stricken people in America, but they are extremely rare and isolated and usually in rural areas.

I expect that to change, soon. Many, many people have no clue where food comes from or what it takes to get it.

Or down right anarchy. Whether the left likes it or not, this country was founded and prospered under the direction of a bunch of old white guys and it produced the freest, most prosperous society the world has ever known.

The left thinks they can tear down all the institutions that created and sustained this prosperity and freedom with something better but they really have no idea what it is or how to run things. Virtually every large city in America that is under Democrat control is crumbling and in some cases on the verge of chaos. Look at Baltimore. The left has been on a crusade to tear everything down that once made Baltimore a thriving city and what have they replaced it with? Violent crime is skyrocketing and poverty is walking with it hand and hand. Doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see where it ends up.

Obama is just doing it on a bigger stage. Tearing everything down and releasing the forces of anarchy on the world.

The modern left isn't so much a movement as it is a collection of grievance groups that just want to strike out at "the man". Not only does this make for some strange bedfellows like gays and Muslims it will lead to anarchy once they wake up and realize they are the man and they have no idea how to produce a stable society. Victimhood does not equal leadership no matter how much the left tries to make it so.

----

I've read some interesting stuff on that. Gay activists were actually invading the psychiatry association meetings, grabbing the microphone and shrieking (as we have seen them do).

The psychiatrists decided that "if homosexuality is not causing them any stress, then it's not a mental health problem." So they took it off the books. HOWEVER... they did not revoke any of their data on what causes homosexuality. This is the important part. It was still considered the result of a distant or abusive father, a clutching over-protective mother, or sexual trauma at an early age. (Although, that data has now been trash-canned, and for merely political reasons.)

The left has a thing for false equivalence. Maybe it's inevitable, since they're nihilists and everything is equally horrible.
At any rate, they're wrong.
Not all ideas are equal; some are demonstrably better than others. The best ones are those that most closely comport with reality.
Reality's Truth may be difficult to know, but it's not impossible.
The ideas of the enlightenment are better than Communism because they are closer to reality and Truth.
That's why they are better, even though they're 3 centuries older.

Wives were sequestered during the "Golden Age of Athens", when married men were encouraged to "mentor" boys, sometimes with sex. Sex between males was considered to be superior to sex with one's wife because it was free of the spiritual contamination of family concerns. Affection toward wives was rare enough that one case of a man describing his grief over losing his wife merited special mention by Will Durant.

Women were treated worse during the Golden Age than during the earlier classical period when, for example, Antigone was written. There were a few female prostitutes who had a degree of freedom and prosperity during the Golden Age.

Well Dave, even in the most horrific economic collapses (Argentina, Zimbabwe, Weimar Germany), there wasn't widespread starving in the streets (at least not much more widespread then it had been before the currency collapsed).

I don't think that's how an economic collapse would play out in the US. I think it would be more of a slow devaluation, with people switching to alternative "currencies" in a more barter based economy until a new currency (hopefully backed by SOMETHING and not just fiat) came along.

Who knows though? So many moving pieces...

The salutatorian, seems he is a theta male, was quoting Milky Virus as some profound thinker. They were called the Unbreakable class because Katrina hit while they were in third grade. And after all 131 were officially graduated there was the final bit of narcissism - a slide show of baby pictures that lasted five songs including Simple Minds 'Don't you forget about me,' one song and slideshow to memorialize the classmate who died, and finally a music video by the class. And then it was finally over.

Geez.

An act of mercy by God. Barring that? I don't see one. Our culture has become so corrupted and enslaved its not able to bring about the changes needed. We get the government we choose and deserve in a democracy. This situation wasn't forced on us by mean people in power, we voters chose it as a nation, over successive generations.

I even see conservatives tainted by this. The reaction "there oughta be a law" or "the government should..." is the kneejerk first reaction to anything. Not "we need to..." or "how can we..." but appeals to government to be our solution. And too often the left's worldview creeps into our reactions in other ways. Just fifteen years ago everyone here laughed at and mocked the very idea of homosexual marriage. It was ridiculous, stupid, absurd. It was nonsense, without sense or reason.

Now? A lot of the people here think you're terrible if you oppose it. That's not the result of conservative thought or the nation's founding principles. That's leftist ideology creeping in.

Thanks for pointing that out, Christopher. Women, slaves, peasants, were pretty much marginalized during the Golden Age.

Today's left doesn't even have the "beauty" part going for it.

177 Dave, what you're digging at is the root of why lefties are so virulently against religious belief: their projection of their own use of "it's for your own good" as a means of sugar-coating pure evil fascist power lust.

Simply put, they don't believe Christians and Jews and Muslims actually believe what they say; they think they're doing like leftists do, which is lying about their true motivations to control others.

And you are right. Leftists don't have the faintest clue of how anything works, nor do they intend to learn; they simply think they can "do better". Here in the Bay Area, we are plagued on an annual basis with people who want to blow up the Hetch Hetchy dam reservoir in the Sierra Nevada so that the valley can be "restored". When you ask them where they intend to find replacement water for somewhere north of 4 million people -- or how they intend for "the poor" that they sniffle over to cover the 500% increase in the electric bill from the loss of cheap hydropower -- word salad, baby, often with a few "homophobic" or "corporate shill" thrown in.

The short answer is we may be beyond the tipping point and the only thing that's going to save society is a cataclysm. Preferably one that hits Washington, DC directly and forces the states to actually act as independent thinking entities again.

It's true enough that they voted for Big Government in the post-war period. Their childhood memories of the Depression had much to do with that. As Walter Russell Mead has pointed out, the Blue State model (Big Government, Big Business, Big Unions) seemed to work quite well in the late '40's and 1950's. The WWII generation did not realize that was an anomaly and as soon as countries who had been flattened by WWII were in a position to compete with us, we began to run into trouble.

The minimum voting age was 21 until the 26th amendment was ratified in 1971.

The WWII generation were those who came of age shortly before and during WWII. They were not in positions of power, just as the Boomers were not in power during the 60s.

188 This is sort of a footnote and not meant to knock Donna's good comment, but one should never expect Mead to say anything correct or interesting or not obvious, in this casethe "blue model" did not work in the 40s and 50s, in the sense it was nothing like the blue model as it has developed.

Look at every aspect of the size of govt. and its impact on society and the economy in that period vs. today. No comparison, completely different animals.

Economically of course it was a completely different world, even leaving aside the (currently) massive and decisive role of non-market (govt.) factors.

Some areas there's overlap between economics and public sector. Public school teachers of that period, up through the 60s early 70s, produced dramatically superior educational outcomes than today, on average. Most of them had to have second jobs/summer jobs to make ends meet (today in blue states they rank ahead of average real economy workers in total compensation, which doesn't even count their totally superior position on job security). Lots of wheels turning in that picture, of course.

I rather suspect that the murderous Mohammadans in ISIS and such groups have to be aghast at the thought of late-term abortion. One way or the other, things are not going to end well for the Leftists.

191 To the writer: I disagree with your assessment of this piece; on the contrary, it's about as succinct a summing-up of a complex phenomenon with many moving parts as I've seen, and I plan to send it to a few people.

Progressive arguments are easy to make, because they tend to be of a rather simplistic "if we do away with this mean, silly, outdated convention, then this magic will happen" nature, while cavalierly ignoring such myriad factors as the costs and far-reaching implications of whatever dumbass policy they're pushing. A true conservative argument, on the other hand, is much trickier thing to pull off, dealing as it must with why said mean, outdated conventions came, over time, to be in the first place, and why one should think twice about discarding them overnight. I think you've done a nice job of that here.

A while back, i send a friend a "Can you believe this?" text about some new gay overreach or other, and he came back at me with "omg the friggin gays". That phrase became our shorthand for every new outrage that's happened since--including the one you used as an example here.

(And just so you know, my friend and I are both gay.)

192 "The Greatest Generation, also known as the G.I. Generation, is the generation that includes the veterans who fought in World War II. They were born from around 1901 through 1924, coming of age during the Great Depression. Journalist Tom Brokaw dubbed this the Greatest Generation in a book of the same name."

The vanguard of this cohort would've been eligible to vote as early as 1922 (thanks for the info about the voting age. Now I've learned something).
Fully 75% of the GG were voting before the US entry into WW II in 1941.

193 don't understand the jeweler case, either. the two women received their rings, and they had their marriage. when they find out the jeweler doesn't support gay marriage, they are enraged and decide to sue him? huh? on what grounds?

the problem with the rainbow coalition is that what they reallyyyyyyy want is acceptance. they want to be validated. they want people to like them. well, you can't force people to think the way you want them to. sure, with enough force, you can get 'em to obey, but that has nothing to do with belief.

seems to me that the rainbow rights activists are just being lazy. the trend over the past 20 odd years has been acceptance, but this isn't good enough. well, if they want complete acceptance and support for gay marriage, then perhaps they should start trying to engage in a persuasive dialogue instead of resorting to bullying, harassment, intimidation - what is essentially - force.

the radical idea here is gay marriage, not traditional marriage. while i could honestly careless about the issue as it ranks low in importance, i am astounded by the tactics of the rainbow cabal.

what they can't accept is that many people do not agree with them. period. well, the way our political system works is that if one is passionate about an issue, well, then one needs to do the hard work of changing the other side's mind.

the rainbow rights brown shirts haven't done this. they are too politically lazy to do the work.

194 Fantastic piece, well written. just one quibble over mixed metaphors, at the end replace "behind the 8 ball" with something like "screaming from the stands behind the fence"

197 Daniel Greenfield, "Sultan Knish," wrote a blazing op-ed about this on his blog.

The raging, vengeful gay activists and those who goad and cheer them on aren't interested in "gay rights" so much as they're hell-bent on destroying Christianity and gleefully dynamiting the moral foundation of Western civilization.

And there's a lot of "we'll shove this stick UP your ass and break it OFF" Vengeance in their motivation: "How DARE you have a moral code that condemns anything we want to do! How DARE YOU!"

So every Christian has to be crushed. Ground into the dirt, and then pissed on from a great height.

If it were about RIGHTS, they'd be after the moslems with pitchforks and torches.

But, no.

199 I've seen the quote before, but Hi Tower wasn't the one credited. LBJ sort of did Texas in.
