12 White and Renouf visited the store and later gave specifications and a price range for potential rings.

"They were great to work with. They seemed to have no issues. They knew the two of us were a same-sex couple," White said.

"I referred some of my friends to them, just because I did get some good customer service and they had good prices."

That was before one friend went in to purchase a ring for his girlfriend -- and instead found a distressing sign.

It reads: "The sanctity of marriage is under attack. Let's keep marriage between a man and a woman."

'It was really upsetting'

The friend took a picture of the poster, which made its way back to White.

"I had no idea about the sign up until that point," she said.

"It was really upsetting. Really sad, because we already had money down on [the rings]

, and they're displaying how much they are against gays, and how they think marriage should be between a man and a woman."

The couple went to the store the following day, and asked about the sign.

"They just said that that's their beliefs, and they think they can put up whatever they want. I just said it was very disrespectful, it's very unprofessional and I wanted a refund," White said.

"I have no issues with them believing in what they believe in. I think everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But I don't think they should put their personal beliefs inside their business."

56 "Well Official Orders are in, I'm off to Okinawa."

I understand the locals are in an unsettled mood.

On top of their not being happy with the US presence to begin with, the USMC announced a while back that they're going to base a bunch of V-22 Ospreys in Okinawa.

This was an unpopular decision from the start and has grown less popular over time.

Add to that the Marines having just the other day dropped yet another Osprey, in Hawaii, in what they discreetly and delicately referred to as a "hard landing". Yeah, a "hard landing" which totally destroyed the airframe, killed two leathernecks, and put a couple more in critical care with injuries including severe burns.

Okinawans just don't want this aircraft overhead on their crowded island. And their Governor has just formally requested that Tokyo reject the American plan, resist any further deployments, and remove all Ospreys currently based there.

Interesting times.

65 Do you mind if I put this up here again? I liked the way it came out, though I've been known to be full of shit:

I've thought about this some while wondering how we got here - how we got to the point of "impeachment is off the table," and to the point of where only certain laws apply now to only certain people, at only certain times, and you will be told 'where, to whom and when' and you WILL NOT QUESTION IT.

It was Clinton. When Clinton was impeached, he deserved to be impeached. He committed crimes and he lied under oath. He participated in a cover-up and he obstructed justice.

But because of the office he held, he wasn't convicted. He, in the eyes of the senate, was above that level of the law. The level of the law that applies to us - down here.

When that division was made between to whom the laws will apply, it started this snowball to where we are at where not only to whom the laws will apply, but also whom shall make those decisions.

You, or I, could be arrested for any number of 'crimes' today that we don't even know that we are committing. You could be out fishing and catch a 'rare' species of fish that is a quarter inch too small and you could be arrested and fined. Yet a person coming to this country illegally will not face any type of sanction and will instead be rewarded with "benefits".

Until there is some rationality restored into this scenario that we used to call a country, we're screwed.

We're not a country of laws and any time someone says that we are, they are insulting our intelligence.

It gets better than that.

As the late Christopher Hitchens pointed out, Bill Clinton seriously argued in court, all the way up to the Supreme Court, that he was immune from a certain federal law allowing plaintiffs in sexual harassment cases to engage in discovery about other sexual conduct by the defendant.

AFTER HAVING SIGNED THAT LAW HIMSELF.

Yeah, pretty much.

The current vogue seems to be for America's allies to demand written rather than verbal security guarantees, no longer trusting what Obama says in front of a mic. Well, ask the Ukrainians how well having a written guarantee from the USA has worked out for them lately.

It's going to be very interesting when Japan decide that they simply have to have nuclear weapons to defend their regional sovereignty, in the context of American retreat and decline. Not only do they have the technological skills to do it, quickly, but they also have by far the largest stock of plutonium in the world. Hundreds of tons of it.

Wonder if this will be like her mother's book, which failed to even earn back the huge advance that the publisher paid to Canquelles.

Of course, to the publishers, earning money from the title isn't the point. It's a way for the giant corporate media combine behind the publishing house to curry favor with a politically powerful figure in a way that discreetly avoids close scrutiny.

"I believe the Osprey has had less fatal accidents than the Sea Knight or Chinook."

From an article covering this most recent Osprey crash:

"For every 100,000 flight hours, the Osprey has had 3.2 mishaps involving loss of life or damage exceeding $2 million, Marine spokesman Capt. Ty Balzer said in an email. That compares with a rate of 2.98 per 100,000 flight hours for the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters the Ospreys are replacing."

And the -46 fleet are pretty much half a century old. Many of them having been shot up in places like Vietnam, patched up and kept in service.

There are other confounding factors when it comes to rotorcraft accident rates.

Utilization pattern is one. In Iraq, the Ospreys were used only very sparingly for combat assault. Most of their flying was "ass and trash" logistics hops between firebases. Less risky mission profile by far. The statistics aren't normalized to account for such differentials in usage. They need to be.

Then after critics pointed this out, when Ospreys later began ops in Afghanistan, they were prominently assigned more combat roles. In which use the Air Force managed to plow one into the ground shortly thereafter, killing four people.

Then when an experienced USAF brigadier general concluded the preponderance of the evidence in the Afghanistan crash pointed to technical problems with the downed Osprey, he was immediately canned, and his report shredded, and a "pilot error" scenario cooked up.

Another issue is that the bar for crash stats and costs keeps getting moved by officialdom at the five-sided insane asylum on the Potomac.

Note that a "Class A" mishap used to be damage over one million bucks to the airframe. Then Congress started to notice the high number of Class A downings of Ospreys. Presto changeo, the threshold was bumped up to $2M from $1M.

There's more of Obama's "scholarly" mindset, as glossy as a film of oil on the surface of a puddle, and as deep as one.

News flash: the mullahs aren't interested in survival. Not at all.

They're interested in the Twelfth Imam. And the literal imminent end of the world. Which they believe they will have a central and indispensible role in helping to bring to pass.

"Survival" per se means nothing at all to them in that eschatological context.

The IG is an independent watchdog who's sole purpose for existence is to detect and investigate fraud in federal programs and to prosecute Federal employee misconduct. It is basically the Internal Affairs ++ of the federal government . It is composed of a tiny group of individuals compared to other Federal law enforcement agencies.

In a fantasy conservative administration, the Offices of the Inspector General(OIG) would be as large or larger than FBI , NSA ,DEA.

One of the first things Obama did when he arrived in DC was to fire the Inspector General for multiple agencies and replace them with his lackeys.

I am not a fan of MOAR government to solve problems but the IG's investigative success and accuracy have been very consistent and very critical of waste, fraud and abuse.

There could be a worse proposal than to authorize a temporary 'surge' of IG agents ripping apart endemic fraud in every Cabinet department and making recommendations for closing the doors on huge chunks of it.

Just thinking out loud...

276 Disgraced IRS official Lois Lerner didn't become involved with the tea-party cases until May 13, 2010, when she received the sensitive-case report created by tax-law specialists in Washington. Then, in early 2011, Lerner ordered that the cases go through a "multi-tiered review" process, called the tea-party cases "very dangerous," and reiterated, "Cincy should probably NOT have these cases."

What followed was a series of events that those who followed the IRS scandal closely will remember well: Lerner demanded that the tax-law specialists working the cases coordinate with the chief counsel's office, subsequently asked that tea-party cases be reclassified as "advocacy cases," and worked to orchestrate a cover-up of those orders when she learned that an inspector general's report was set to come to light in May of 2013.

Epstein's team at Cause of Action is adamant that most of the IRS personnel involved in the scandal executed their duties properly. "Clearly, Jack Koester, John Shafer, and Cindy Thomas executed their employee obligations precisely," their report says. "Indeed, in the course of merely two business days, the employees in the Exempt Organizations group accurately elevated this Tea Party issue as 'newsworthy' or having the 'potential to become newsworthy.'"

The team's conclusion: The Internal Revenue Manual must be fundamentally reformed in order to prevent future targeting. "While there are certainly complex or new issues that would warrant or even require an employee to elevate the issue to a manager, the IRS's desire to be portrayed in a positive light by the media is certainly not one of those issues," they say.

303 Washington (CNN) -- The Obama administration on Monday moved to prohibit federal agencies from providing local cops with certain kinds of military equipment such as grenade launchers, high-caliber weapons and bayonets, in the wake of controversy over a "militarized" police response to unrest last summer in Ferguson, Missouri.

The new prohibitions are part of an executive order President Barack Obama issued for federal agencies to review the types of equipment they provide to local and state police.

The banned list includes: tank-like armored vehicles that move on tracks, certain types of camouflage uniforms, bayonets, firearms and ammunition of .50 caliber or higher, grenade launchers, and weaponized aircraft.

... well, at least now we know that the old A-10, Warthogs, won't be going to local police forces.

309 Did human-caused climate change lead to war in Syria?

Based only on the mainstream press headlines, you almost certainly would think so.

Reading further into the articles where the case is laid out, a few caveats appear, but the chain of events seems strong.

The mechanism? An extreme drought in the Fertile Crescent region -- one that a new study finds was made worse by human greenhouse gas emissions -- added a spark to the tinderbox of tensions that had been amassing in Syria for a number of years under the Assad regime (including poor water management policies).

It is not until you dig pretty deep into the technical scientific literature, that you find out that the anthropogenic climate change impact on drought conditions in the Fertile Crescent is extremely minimal and tenuous -- so much so that it is debatable as to whether it is detectable at all.

This is not to say that a strong and prolonged drought didn't play some role in the Syria's pre-war unrest -- perhaps it did, perhaps it didn't (a debate we leave up to folks much more qualified than we are on the topic) -- but that the human-influenced climate change impact on the drought conditions was almost certainly too small to have mattered.

In other words, the violence would almost certainly have occurred anyway.

315 Man, that Church guy sure had an eye for color, didn't he?

All that landscape, all that drama right there, and he dismisses it to shadow and gives it all to the sky. A skyscape colorfully dominating an incredibly dramatic landscape because that's what blew him away.
