Overnight Open Thread (5-21-2015)

Sadly most of the movies I see these days are ones I watch on planes. So here are a couple of quickie movie reviews of what I've watched in the last few weeks.

Interstellar

Interstellar

Okay I had read the mixed reviews but I figured hey I'm a sucker for sci-fi flicks so why not. Well the short version is that Interstellar is a long, maudlin, melodramatic, visually stunning, wannabe epic, manipulative, nearly 3 hour long movie with gaping plot holes that actually ended up irritating me. Not recommended unless you have nothing else better to do for three hours. Or just enjoy movies where nearly every single line is an intense whisper.

Birdman

birdman

A very interesting and well done movie. I can see why it won an Oscar and Michael Keaton was nominated for one. It did a very good job of putting you into the life and mind of Riggan, a washed-up actor best known for playing the superhero Birdman now trying desperately to pull off a Broadway show and show that he can actually do something meaningful. The movie follows him around and fills you in on his life without ever having a flashback scene, while also making you want to see what happens to him next. I enjoyed its mix of documentary-style and magical realism scenes but I can see why others might not care for it. It also makes the case that life in general needs a jazz drum background track. Recommended.

The Imitation Game

imitationgame

Okay I already knew the story of Alan Turing and the British breaking the Enigma code during WWII and was very skeptical that it could ever be made into a watchable movie. But I was wrong and The Imitation Game is in fact excellent. It does a good job of both explaining the technological challenges of breaking the code and the context of how important this was to winning the war and capturing the drama behind it. So you can watch the movie knowing nothing and fully enjoy it. Alan Turing was a genius and likely had what we would call today Asperger's syndrome and was critical to ultimately breaking the code. Benedict Cumberbatch did an excellent job playing him and deserved his Oscar for it. Turing's homosexuality was significant to several parts of the plot but I'm glad the movie didn't make it a central point or become preachy about it. Highly recommended.

Cashback

cashback

This 2006 British movie has been lingering in my Netflix queue for nearly five years - so long I had forgotten why I ever even added it. But a few weeks ago out of complete lack of other choices I finally watched it. And it turned out to be very good. The story is about an art student who after a painful breakup with his girlfriend is unable to sleep at all. Finally desperate to fill his nights he starts working the night shift at a local grocery store. There at some point he discovers that he has the ability to actually stop time. So of course he has some fun with this checking out women's breasts and playing pranks on people. But after a while he becomes bored with this and is inspired to use the stopped-time scenes as still-lifes for his art. And in the process he also comes to really know the motley group of people he works with and appreciate them in their own way. In particular he falls in love with a quirky cashier, Sharon. They eventually start dating and it turns out that being able to stop time is not nearly as helpful in a relationship as you might think.

Stylistically the movie is sort of a mix of Fight Club with Groundhog Day along with a good amount of teen sex comedy and rom-com mixed in. But it's actually a very thoughtful and funny movie with the main character narrating scenes and musing on the significance of time in peoples' lives, his own flaws and missed opportunities, and reflecting on how he came to be so fascinated by the female form. Ultimately the movie is about finding love and inspiration in the fleeting moments of everyday life more than any of the entertaining boobage and comedy scenes in it. Excellently written this movie really should be more well known than it is. Highly recommended.

Popehat: How To Spot And Critique Censorship Tropes In The Media's Coverage Of Free Speech Controversies

All of these phrases are really implicit calls for censoring certain kinds of speech.

Thomas Sowell Is NOT Happy With Obama's Statement That We Should "Ask From Society's Lottery Winners"

But the federal government does not just "ask" for money. It takes the money it wants in taxes, usually before the people who have earned it see their paychecks.

Despite pious rhetoric on the left about "asking" the more fortunate for more money, the government does not "ask" anything. It seizes what it wants by force. If you don't pay up, it can take not only your paycheck, it can seize your bank account, put a lien on your home and/or put you in federal prison.

So please don't insult our intelligence by talking piously about "asking."

And please don't call the government's pouring trillions of tax dollars down a bottomless pit "investment." Remember the soaring words from Barack Obama, in his early days in the White House, about "investing in the industries of the future"? After Solyndra and other companies in which he "invested" the taxpayers' money went bankrupt, we haven't heard those soaring words so much.

Then there are those who produced the wealth that politicians want to grab. In Obama's rhetoric, these producers are called "society's lottery winners."

....When all else fails, redistributionists can say, as Obama did at Georgetown University, that "coldhearted, free-market capitalist types" are people who "pretty much have more than you'll ever be able to use and your family will ever be able to use," so they should let the government take that extra money to help the poor.

Slippery use of the word "use" seems to confine it to personal consumption. The real question is whether the investment of wealth is likely to be done better by those who created that wealth in the first place or by politicians. The track record of politicians hardly suggests that turning ever more of a nation's wealth over to them is likely to turn out well.

64 "Well the short version is that Interstellar is a long, maudlin, melodramatic, visually stunning , wannabe epic, manipulative, nearly 3 hour long movie with gaping plot holes that actually ended up irritating me."

So, it's a Christopher Nolan movie, then? I watched 2 recentish flicks within the last couple of weeks. "Guardians of the Galaxy"... was ok. Didn't love it didn't hate it. It was reasonable fun and kept me engaged. But, it tried a bit too hard to be cute and the soundtrack though good songs, seemed a little forced. Chris Pratt, Bautista, John C. Reilly and Michael Rooker made the film more enjoyable with their presence than I might have have felt about it otherwise. They were good. Not bad for a comic book type flick.
"Edge of Tomorrow" was a surprise. Quite good and thoroughly entertaining. Was expecting it to be more ho-hum action/war by-the-numbers... but it really stuck to it's scifi guns and stayed with the "groundhog day" element of the story... so the action came as a natural byproduct of the story. Watching Cruise go through the motions again and again and getting killed in various ways worked for me. Also, Cruise was good. He does sort of personality... shallow, self absorbed so very well. Don't know if it has much repeat viewing value, but, it was fully engaging on first run through. Thumbs up.

Anyone who has known small business owners, or people who have started businesses, knows that those people work far harder than most of the rest of us, and they take enormous financial risks. I've known people who started their own businesses. They work 12 to 16 hours per day, six days a week, sometimes 7 days a week. They invest their life savings, and bank loans, and sometimes money from family members.

Other reviews of the movie that I have seen here say that the issue of Turing's homosexuality is over-emphasized. In the Britain of the time, homosexuality amongst upper-class intellectuals was more or less winked at, knowingly. And given that the guy was a brilliant mathematician, his homosexuality was never a barrier to his being employed in the War effort.

Geoffrey Pyke is another gay boffin who was invaluable to the War effort.

99 #57: I was watching Disney's Sleeping Beauty recently (don't judge me; I have a couple of little nieces), and I couldn't help but notice the striking resemblance between Maleficent's pig-headed warriors and Jabba's Gamorrean Guards.

I'm pretty sure that's where Lucas got the idea. Also, Disney movies tend to have a bunch of goofy shit going on in the background. And what did Lucas do once he no longer had Spielberg telling him to tone it down? Well, he added a bunch of goofy shit going on in the background of the Star Wars movies.

I'm pretty sure Lucas was heavily influenced by Disney movies. He just doesn't have the Disney talent for storytelling, which is why he needed Spielberg riding his ass to make a decent film.

The left claim to be in love with the Cuban system.

Okay. Let's take them up on it. In Cuba, there's a standard wage. Actors and musicians get paid the same as people who muck out clogged toilets, or who cut sugar cane under a tropical sun (which is brutally hard labor).

So let us enact a comparable arrangement for, oh, a quarter of a century and then see what actors and musicians think of the system.

(Note that the high taxation of Hollywood salaries was one of the factors which turned Ronald Reagan from an FDR liberal into a budding free-market conservative. He observed how big stars would do two pictures a year and then knock off and loaf, because the marginal return to them on additional work was tiny. The tax man took it all.)

130 "Edge of Tomorrow" was a surprise. Thumbs up.
Posted by: otho at May 21, 2015 11:30 PM (tBSrv)

Yes I was very pleasantly surprised by 'Edge of Tomorrow' as well. Cruise was very good as a shallow douche and as he was killed over and over, you saw him become a better, ultimately heroic man. More range than Cruise's usual characters.

Another bit of horse liniment for those prone to boils is ichthammol. It looks and smells like tar and can leave a long-lasting dark stain in your skin....but where the usual recommended "hot wet compresses" takes forever to make modest gains, this old-fashioned "drawing-salve" is wildly more effective. 175 I think the reason Obama thinks in terms of society's "lottery winners" is because he is one. He was born into a relatively well-off family, went to good colleges as an affirmative action enrollee and became President on a lark. Where in his life has he had to work at anything? So he draws on his life experience and thinks- lottery winners.

176 Maleficient surprised me by how good it was. Well the Prince was not bad, just a bit confused. Yep... and let's face it- Bill Paxton always adds a star to a film's rating. Cruise does do douche so well and it was a redemtion story that worked for the story. Cruise is an underrated actor. Hopefully he'll pick more roles that showcase his abilities as he gets older. He's done a fair amount of dross and/or ho-hum flicks, but there's enough good roles in good movies over the years to make me appreciate what he's capable of.

Imitation game was very good, I actually thought the gay thing played very little into the movie until the very end, and they close the movie with on screen text about gays in the 40s or something leaving it feeling like one of those humane society infomercials, except it felt wholly out of place and an abrupt zigzag away from the whole rest of the movie

246 Interstellar was the most interesting of these films, and I'm not a fan of everything Chris Nolan has ever done. Didn't like The Prestige much for my own reasons, not that it wasn't an interesting concept. Thought Memento veered into M. Night Shyamalam whatever territory. The Batmans were cool, but hit or miss overall. I liked Interstellar. Thought it was better than 2001 A Space Odyssey. But that movie puts me to sleep, and I know I'm not the only one, but people say it's good.

Birdman I saw in theaters, and it's pure Hollywood conceit. Nobody buys that Michael Keaton threw it all away, because he wouldn't compromise his artistic integrity to make ANOTHER Tim Burton film. That's what the Batman franchise was back then. George Clooney never made another, and he got rich. Val Kilmer got fat and disappeared, too. What are you gonna do?

The Imitation Game took someone very complicated and turned them into a one dimensional gay martyr. I loved Cryptonomicon. I loved Turing Machine. I became irritated by this movie by the end of it where I was shouting at the epilogue.

He was born into a relatively well-off family, went to good colleges as an affirmative action enrollee and became President on a lark. Where in his life has he had to work at anything? So he draws on his life experience and thinks- lottery winners.

Anna, the article I read mentioned handicapped women, only because with the girl children all killed pre-birth, any non-handicapped woman's family could get a better price as a "real" bride.

Bride kidnappings & 1 wife for related men {many families out in the boonies don't fall under the 1 child policy & many that do simply don't send the 2nd sons to school - straight to the fields} are making a comeback as well.

300 hold on, is turing polish cause it was the poles,
and even the french after the poles who did all the hard work on
breaking enigma. whatshisnameturing was some pantywaist nancy boy lime
who showed up halfway through .
Posted by: yankeefifth at May 22, 2015 12:02 AM (kCLGY)

There were several elements in breaking ENIGMA. The Poles had a mechanical device they called "the Bombe" after the French term for an ice-cream cake for some reason. It allowed for quick cribbing of ENIGMA messages and some success in breaking the original (4? rotor?) device while being overrun.
Another element was intercepted Italian cyphers that were transmitted in a training drill in the Med, from an Italian version. On analysis it was found that one letter was missing from an extremely long coded transmission, and it was figured that the operator was lazy and hit one key repeatedly. From that they figured something of the progression of the rotors and the cyphering and realized that no letter could be ciphered as itself, and this is a chink in the decryption.
The Poles fled to France and from there to England.
Other elements helped including capturing a German naval version that had a different rotor assembly, it had two half rotors in place of one of the 4 rotors in the original Army version.

However, as the war went on and the Germans became aware that it was possible to decipher ENIGMA they began changing codes more frequently.

The ENIGMA is an interesting idea of cyphering. It has 4 or 5 rotors and a plug-board like an old telephone operator's board. The coding depended on which series of rotors and which arrangement of plugs were used. As each letter of a message was entered it would also rotate a rotor in a planned manner changing connections to light up different letters each time. The receiving ENIGMA would copy that movement for each letter received when the coded message was entered into the receiving machine.

It was broken by a lot of hard work, insight, capturing equipment and skull sweat. Although Turing took a lot of credit to himself, he did do marvelous things that I could not touch, so if he was an insufferable bugger, well, he was useful.

(The story of breaking Japanese Purple is even more interesting)

322 U-110, a Type IXB class, did not sink. The British were able to board the submarine and retrieve many classified documents and an Enigma machine.

It is probably from U-110 that the RN retrieved the true heart of the Kreigsmarine's wolf packs - the Flower Chart. When orders and contact messages were sent via Enigma machines, coordinates taken from the Flower Chart were used instead of actual Lat and Long numbers. So it was a code within a code. And once the RN had the Flower Chart and could reasonably read Enigma traffic, hunter killer teams or patrol bombers could be steered to U-boat concentrations.

361 I am gloating about my new kitchen floor. Put down a bunch of natural cork laminate click-together flooring planks. It went pretty well, and all I have left do now is the quarter-round where the flooring meets the baseboards.

In the "what would I do differently, if I were to do it again" department, I will offer these tips:

1. Do not start the floor by putting a milled joint edge against the wall. Use a table saw, and rip about 2" off the first row of planks, and put that cut edge against the wall. Those strips with the milled joint will become invaluable, later.

2. Take the time to make some "kickers", small slabs of plank with a block of hardwood rabbeted and glued to them, so you can lock the kicker onto a joint, and whack on it with a hammer to move the plank into position. Small scraps of plank used as kickers soon get the shit beat out of them, and you can run out.

362 "But the federal government does not just "ask" for money. It takes the

No. The are just fucking with you and fomenting class envy by making you think they are taxing you, the worker, on the front end.

It is the guy or gal who buys the shit you put your minute or two of labor into that buys the end product that pays the tax.

Tax season you get all pissed off again for the taxes you have to pay, but it is the end retail consumer that is actually paying your gross income, taxes and all.

It would be so much cleaner to pay that tax at the back end, at the cashier, but everyone, EVERYONE, would what know they really do pay.

Sidebar - It is that back end tax domestic goods that makes 'made in china' profitable. Vote for Hillery, s/he/it says she'll eliminate the incentive for business to go offshore.

That reminds me of a funny part of how I spent my day. Days ago, I had an issue with my bank about how they kept sending announcements to a compromised email account even after they'd been directly told to stop. That lead to the deletion of my email from the main bank screen (the one that the guys inside the bank see), despite it being a "required field".

Anyway, after that point, I became aware that the bank's Rewards program was still sending out "you have XXXX rewards points from your cc that ends with 1234" emails to the compromised email despite it officially having been purged from the underlying cc....which gets a bump up a level of management and even more sympathy for the next problem. I also redeemed all the rewards points in the account (except for and I'm walkin' around with an extra $95 in my pocket -- woohoo!!!!

By the way (having spent a bunch of time with them), has anyone deconstructed the stylized actions that bank employees do? When they call up the line, they always go, "My name is Fred Smith, and I'm a banker", then they squint at their screens and say "Montana, Charlie, Six, Eight, Seven" to the computer on the line, and then they go "escalate". Speech recognition has gotten so good that it probably fools 80% of the people overhearing the human's end of the conversation.

424 Carol: "My older brother doesn't want to move to TX because of the recent tornadoes!"

Morning, Carol. I live in twister country, and let me tell you, the threat is overblown. Not that it will make any difference to your brother, but that's pretty silly. You're probably in much more significant danger from drunken illegal invader drivers. Everywhere.

Take the entire area of Texas, mark the tornado paths on it, where serious damage has been done, and per square foot, you're probably safer anywhere in Texas than on a hurricane coast. But such thinking is likely to dissuade your brother's fears, since thinking and fear often tend to be exclusive mental departments.

I would not move to a trailer home on a hilltop in the middle of a wide-open prairie.

Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, May 22, 2015. On this day in 1964 LBJ announced his Great Society social reforms to bring an end to poverty and racial injustice in America. We still have poverty and always will regardless of what the socialist government does. Indeed, when you subsidize poverty you create more of it. This was a simple ploy to buy black votes for the Democrats and it worked. It is very easy to grow a FSA. As for racial injustice, that had largely disappeared for blacks by 1964. Now we still have it but it is largely against white males.

471 "I am surprised. The Navy is pushing back against the Chinese."

The Navy isn't doing this on their own. They can only do this with the approval of the President. The Chinese complains to the State Department, who takes the complaint to the President, who make the decision to continue the overflights. Then the Chinese get to decide if they are going to shoot down the overflights. At that point, the President of the United States decides something something, and we're at war either declared or undeclared.

Meanwhile there is a war of words between Iran and Israel. Israel said (more or less) if Hezbollah puts missiles in people's homes, they (Israel) will attack the missile launchers which will mean that civilians will be hurt. Iran says that if Israel attacks civilians then Iran has 80,000 missiles ready to launch against Israel.

475 I cannot recommend the Imitation Game. I *do* feel as if Turing's homosexuality was central to the whole movie, foolishly. Moreover, Cumberbatch plays him like a poof, and/or autistic - and he was neither.

I'm well read on Turing, and everything I've read indicates that he had a strong personality and was a true leader - very much not portrayed here.

Moreover, Joan Clarke openly admits that she knew Turing was gay and that their marriage would largely be without sex - but she wanted to marry him anyway. And her parents at no time "demanded" that she return home to get married. The whole sub-plot of him being "forced" to marry her is unmitigated bullshit, meant to create tension around his homosexuality - tension that simply did not exist.

Lastly, it would have been nice to recognize that thousands of people were working to break enigma, led by Turing. He was a leader, not the gay version of "The Professor" from Gilligan's island.

Mention his homosexuality? Sure.

But even his death, which in the movie is attributed to him being embarrassed about being jailed for being gay (which, indeed, was a travesty), might very well have been murder. Turing was a walking encyclopedia of what were then top-secrets. He knew as much about encryption as anyone, and he would have been a huge target, asset, and/or liability.

He died years after his arrest, and years after his "treatment" (which was ghastly) ended. It would have been nice to have expounded a bit on "maybe someone wanted him dead?" It's a legitimate, and fascinating, question.

Dreadful film, twisting the truth IMHO.

If Obama was FDR, he would have negotiated a peace with Hitler, allowing him to keep all of France AND we would have shipped back Einstein, Hans Bethe and 500 lbs of plutonium.

What am I saying, he would have surrendered to Japan right after Pearl Harbor and blamed it on Captain Cook.

497 mindful webworker:

Thanks. I need more coffee to find that link without your help.

But the entire list make the article even more wrong. I've been down south and out west, but nowhere compares to far north for mosquitoes.

498 @475 Thanks RobM. I "enjoyed" that. Informative and insightful.

There was a gang of Polish mathematicians who cracked the math of enigma-breaking, built a prototype code-breaking machine, and got their findings out through France as the world caught fire. They're mentioned, more or less, in every cyphering account, but usually as a sort of them-too footnote. I don't think they get the credit they deserve.

NCR also did important work in high speed euro-de-computing, for Tenth Fleet. USN had a crack crew of human computers, all females except the CO, the luckiest officer in WWII.

499 It's starting to look like we won't have a mosquito problem this year; too dry. No moisture in the snow pack because the winter was so cold. No spring rain of any consequence, and the wetland behind my house is dry this year which is not common.

What we do have are gnats. They get in your eyes, your nose, and they bite. You don't know you have been bitten until you see the blood.

500 Harf was up to her usual lying standards yesterday. When asked about the Iranian demand that no inspections would happen without a 24 day notice, she once again claimed that wasn't the case. The Iranians only said that for public consumption. Bullship, the ayatollah himself said this and unlike some leaders, his word is fact.

And I have lived all over the country, North, East, South, and West and no other region has mosquitoes as bad as the South. In fact, the only place I have ever lived that did not have a mosquito problem was on board the ship 500 miles out to sea. Although, Chicago and upstate NY didn't have a problem I suspect it was more because I was there primarily in the Winter. It is hard for mosquitoes to survive when it is -60F outside. (chill factor in Chicago)

504 Agree with RobM. As a movie, Imitation Game is fine. As a representation of an actual historical person and historical events, utter bullshit. Turing was not Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. Turing did not come up with the crossword puzzle idea. Turing did not name the machine after some gay crush, nor did he build it by himself in a barn. Crossword puzzle guy was not original leader, Turing did not write Churchill, crossword puzzle guy came after Turing and should have been the character to visit him after his conviction NOT Joan Clarke. Turing did not work in the same section as Soviet spy or be blackmailed into concealing his identity because he was afraid of being outed. Navy Admiral was not as portrayed and MI6 guy was not as portrayed, or ever worked with Turing. Circumstances of his conviction were not as portrayed and the timing between death and treatment was misleading.

You know who else was convicted during this period of the brutal repression of teh gayz? Sir John Gielgud. Maybe there's more to Turings conviction then just "being gay".

512 @499 Oh yeah. I'm in old swamp-bottom; we've seen only the token mosquito or two, and you can see those in Feb if you're looking for them. But we have some kind of sand-flea that shows up once in a while. I got into some without knowing it while weeding and seeding, and have itchy bumps on one inside-wrist that have resolved into a little patch of welts that should clear up just in time for the mosquitoes to arrive. It is always something. Gardening Thread, in Hell.

Not to mention, even though the only one of the Big Three we have is poison ivy, there are many fence weeds and pest trees that will give you a little rash or edge-on inflamed cut if you handle them. Vegetation is also red in tooth and claw.

513 I don't usually watch movies at all, and despite the fact I'm a huge Sci-Fi junkie I have no interest in so called "Science fiction" flicks.

Acting against my own rules, I watched Interstellar about half a year ago. It was because it got extremely high IMDB reviews, which is unusual.

And guess what? I was totally duped. Interstellar is easily the worst SF movie of the decade, at least on it's SF elements. Not only did it have uncountable plot holes, the script was so fucking bad they Ex Nihilo-d it from the very beginning. It's so stupid I actually hit my forehead so it hurt.

Interstellar's ending has uncanny resemblance to M. Night Shyamalan's shticks.

Good thing I pirated it. If I actually paid to view this POS I could have never forgiven myself.
