Seconded. The money quote:

''Is there something about the left - and I am going to put the media in this category - that is obsessed with sex?'' Cruz asked after fielding multiple questions on gay rights. ''ISIS is executing homosexuals -you want to talk about gay rights? This week was a very bad week for gay rights because the expansion of ISIS, the expansion of radical, theocratic, Islamic zealots that crucify Christians, that behead children and that murder homosexuals - that ought to be concerning you far more than asking six questions all on the same topic.''

35 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

That Ted Cruz sidebar is da bomb. The only way it could have been better is if he had finished by telling the "reporter" "But first. . ."

Anyway, here's a John Barrymore story:

Before Hedda Hopper was a gossip columnist, she was an actress. In 1939 she co-starred in a movie called Midnight with Don Ameche, Claudette Colbert and Barrymore. Hedda's son Bill, then 15, idolized The Great Profile and begged his mother for a chance to meet him. Hopper didn't want to effect a meeting, because no one ever knew what Barrymore might say to someone, especially after he'd had a drink or two. But after pressure from Bill, she finally relented, allowing a visit, but not before speaking to Barrymore:

"Now, Jack, you'll behave yourself, won't you? Bill's only fifteen and he's very impressionable."

Barrymore agreed to watch himself and, as the day of the visit dawned, was as good as his word, being utterly charming to young Bill Hopper and treating him as an honored guest. Then, towards the end of the day. . .

"Bill," Barrymore asked, "what do you want to do?"

"I want to be an actor,"
the boy replied.

"I don't like to hear that, son. I really don't," Barrymore began. "And I'll tell you why. When I was a young man, I was hired by Willie Collier, whom many thought the finest actor of his day, to join his company for a tour of Australia in The Boys of Company B. It was a wonderful experience. Wonderful! He taught me so much. Our last stop was Sydney, where we were booked for six weeks. I made friends there with a young Australian who was the lover of a whorehouse madam."

Hedda coughed and sputtered, trying to drag her son away, but there was no stopping Barrymore.

"He asked me to move into the bordello with him," the actor continued, clamping a hand on the boy's shoulder, "and of course I did. And those, my boy, were the six most glorious weeks of my life - an orgy every night. On our last night, the whores threw a lavish party for me - champagne, oysters - a banquet. They threw themselves all over me and begged me not to go back to the States. We partied all night long and my friend said, 'Jack, why go back to the rat race tomorrow? Stay here. I can find you your own madam and you can move into her whorehouse with her.' And, my boy, as I look back on my life, I realize that's what I should have done. And that's what you should do."

Much to Hedda's relief, Bill didn't take his idol's advice. He did become an actor, though, best known as private investigator Paul Drake in the Perry Mason TV series.

Here's a pic ofHopper in 1929: http://goo.gl/Bmdktd

Hope you all have a wonderful day. I've got a meeting now, so BBL.

Local radio here had an interview with Joe Buck, not necessarily the warmest guy on the planet, and Joe's take on being a guest on Letterman was interesting. He said the weirdest thing about it was NOT that everything you see on tv is scripted, it's that on breaks Dave doesn't interact at all with the guests. Buck thought that was especially odd because it was obvious to him that Letterman is a real sports fan.

145 Mileage-minding government?

Good questions by Conservative Crank.

Let's see...

We'll need a sensor in every car, interfacing with sensors along the roads, so we can keep track of every mile every car travels. That's a good start.

We'll have to have remote ignition kill-switches so cars can be disabled for non-payment of taxes. Or anything else we might need like that.

And don't think you'll get away with anything. The road-monitoring computers will immediately alert the authorities to any un-monitored vehicles.

The collected road taxes and fines should be able to pay off the infrastructure costs for all this by the time the universal monorail system has replaced the car.

Roads? Where you're going, you don't need roads.

167 In 1849, a group of proto-socialists calling themselves the "Icarians" moved into an abandoned Mormon settlement in Nauvoo, Illinois. Their intent was to create a utopian society based on collectivism and equality.

Like the modern left, they were enthralled with a charismatic leader, Etienne Cabet. Like the modern left, they were appalled by the "inequality" created by capitalism, and convinced that a collective social order would create equality.

Like the modern left, they were incapable of building anything on their own, but co-opted what had been built by an earlier, more industrious society. The Mormons, who had been driven out of Nauvoo a few years earlier, had left behind homes, shops and workplaces that were occupied by the Icarians.

Every Icarian was allotted two rooms and identical furniture. In a move that would have gladdened MSNBC, children were separated from their parents and raised in collective-run schools. Religion was replaced with Sunday lectures on Icarian philosophy.

Within a few years, the socialist experiment failed, as their utopia collapsed due to "economic setbacks, policy disagreements and personal rivalries

Socialism has never, ever delivered on its promises; never, ever succeeded anywhere. And yet it will always be with us so long as there are people gullible enough to believe in its pipe dreams of equality and social justice and cynical autocrats willing to exploit those gullible idiots.

You had it easy compared to what we are up against. The socialists wrecking and looting Chile were a distinct minority (although you would never know it from the pop culture current narrative.) Here they have support of the majority, control major media and most major institutions and manage to convince the public they are outsiders and powerless.

203 Gregory of Yardale: "...Within a few years, the socialist experiment failed, as their utopia collapsed..."

Socialism 'works' within small structures where everyone is amenable. A family is a kind of socialist oligarchy. A socialist community like the religious Shakers thrived for decades because its adherents were truly like-minded... survived despite a ban on reproduction! But they were faithful and productive.

In an interview with the last surviving Shakers, one of the women described the last days of the order, before they quit taking in new people, but were taking in people who didn't really fit. She recalls a man who would take extra spoonfuls of sugar in his coffee, even though he didn't like sugar in his coffee, just to be sure he got his share. Sic semper socialism!

206 The Eurotopians decided to build their own version of the venerable C-130 to make up for their complete lack of airlift capability. Called the A400, it began development in the 1990's and was just beginning to enter service with Europtopian air forces.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, one crashed after its flight control software... um... cut off fuel to the engines during takeoff.

Oopsie.

But don't worry, the Eurotopians are forming a multinational committee to oversee the entire program.

They expect it to be back on track in 1 or 3 years.

223 In regards to Hillary; I think that, by-in-large, most people learn to get ahead by working and innovating. But there are some people, no matter what, or how hard they try, just can't get ahead doing things honestly and ethically. Especially when there is this burning desire to not only get ahead, but to get rich - be rich - be regarded and respected for the power and prestige that wealth brings.

Hillary is like that. So is Bill. They never could seem to get ahead doing things honestly so they learned to do things under the table - to push legality to its limit and then to do whatever was necessary to keep from getting caught.

For most successful people, wealth comes first and then the power that accrues to the wealth. With Bill and Hillary, it was the other way around. But even for years after Bill and Hill had power, wealth was elusive. It was only after they cultivated friendships with shady, powerful people that they got wealthy, and not from work. The powerful people they cultivated shared the wealth they received by virtue of quid pro quo friendships with the Clintons.

Dishonesty and corruption have become a natural trait of the Clintons.

In Memo, Blumenthal Initially Blames Demonstrators for Attacks

The day after the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on American outposts in Benghazi that killed Mr. Stevens and three other Americans, Mr. Blumenthal sent Mrs. Clinton a memo with his intelligence about what had occurred. The memo said the attacks were by "demonstrators" who "were inspired by what many devout Libyan viewed as a sacrilegious internet video on the prophet Mohammed originating in America." Mrs. Clinton forwarded the memo to Mr. Sullivan, saying "More info." (Pages 193-195)

What used to be true in other parks, especially Wrigley and Fenway, is definitely true in Colorado: the park creates the illusion that the team doesn't have enough pitching, but has more than enough hitting.

Usually, it's not true, and often it is the other way around. Smart baseball men can recognize these things, but... are there smart baseball men running the team? The evidence would suggest not.

The traditional thinking is that the Rockies are built for Coors field, lots of offense, not much pitching success. But if that were true they should have a bigger home and away W-L differential. This year so far they are 5-11 at home and 9-12 on the road. They suck equally at any altitude apparently.

425 Hi everybody. Don't know who's worried about wifi causing health problems, but relax.

We've been living with radio waves for 100 years and more. We have empirical evidence, and we have the laws of physics. Radio waves do not have enough energy to penetrate the skin, much less cause damage to anything underneath. There is absolutely no chance that they can harm you. It's basic physics.
