Atrocious: FoxNews Will Limit Debate Participation to Ten, Based On... The Polls

What the hell good are the polls right now? People don't know enough to make informed judgments yet. That is the point of a debate -- and that's the point of a first debate, surely.

We are in the very beginnings of this process, and FoxNews is using polls of uninformed people (and I don't mean that negatively; most of us are uniformed at this point) to decide who is allowed to run for President.

And yes, this poll -- based on nothing but name recognition -- will in fact knock five or six people out of the contest entirely. Once you're excluded from a debate, you are labeled "fringe" forever -- and good luck trying to get free media, volunteers, and donors once you've been labeled fringe.

It is not the point of a news organization to make the news -- as FoxNews would be doing here. Based on their silly, meaningless polls, they would declare ten candidates as viable, and five or six non-viable.

Among those who'd be excluded at the moment: Bobby Jindal, long considered the future of the party, and generally acknowledged to be among the most policy-savvy in the entire party.

Rick Perry, former governor of the state that's responsible for half the new jobs in America since Obama's inauguration. I know Perry shit the bed last time, but he says that was due to just getting off back surgery and being on pain pills, and I'd like to know if that's true or not. Because if he's sharper now -- he's a real good candidate.

Carly Fiorina, former HP executive with a great biography and, she says, a thirst for Hillary Clinton's corrupt, murky blood. Well, she doesn't put it that way, but she says she can take her on.

These are serious candidates. Fox is proposing to exclude them, why?

Just to have a "normal" debate where all the candidates are on the stage at once?

For one thing, this isn't a normal year. We have a lot of serious candidates. So do we stick with the usual, or do we adjust our practices to take into consideration the unusualness of this season?

I think the latter. My proposal is that they split debate night into two panels, over two nights. (Or two panels on one night-- but that would be a long night, with around three hours total debate time plus time in between.)

The top six in the polls would do a random draw to be split between the panels, three and three. Everyone else would do another random draw to determine which panel they'd be in.

You'd end up having about 6-8 people per panel, which is a workable number.

Note that the Fox "solution" solves little -- having ten people on the stage, answering the same questions, will be a huge clusterf*ck! It's barely an improvement over having fifteen -- do the math. Assuming about an hour, all told, answering questions (once the questions themselves, commercials, and basic traffic direction are excluded), ten people would have about six minute each to answer questions.

Fifteen people would have four minutes each.

So we're fighting to get "four minutes of actual answers per candidate" up to six minutes?

This is an exceptional year in Republican politics, and conservative thinking, because virtually everything is up for grabs.

In the last post, I talked about the Patriot Act. The party is split between some who want the full Patriot Act back, some who want the USA Freedom Act, and some who want the entire program scrapped as an unconstitutional invasion of privacy.

There has not been an open debate between wildly divergent points of view like that in... forever?

At least since Reagan.

And it's not just that -- some ex-Republicans, like myself, actively want to increase taxes on the wealthy and corporations. (Well, I don't want cuts for them, at least.) My reasoning? I'm tired of the Ruling Class fucking over the rest of the party except when it comes to one thing, their taxation levels. I'm interested in some punishment, some discipline, and a message going forward.

I don't get yelled at a lot when I propose this, either.

This is an extremely fluid time in American politics, at least on the wide-open right, and it is precisely at this time that we do not need an Establishment, Corporatist entity like Fox artificially gaming the field just so that the future of our nation can fit into the Time Slot allotted to it.

“We support and respect the decision Fox has made, which will match the greatest number of candidates we have ever had on a debate stage,” RNC chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement.

Of course you do, Reince. Because the important thing is to keep the party nice and corporate and orderly, right?

The Republican Party needs to have a debate. We should have that debate, instead of falling into our customary pattern of letting the Establishment, Corporatist Ruling Class decided the parameters of our debate for us, so we can choose between Option A and Pretty Much Just Like Option A Option B.

Fox News should have a debate with all the candidates. All of them. And if that means tweaking the all-important convention, then so be it.

34 Debates only really work near the end, when only 2 or 3 candidates have a chance.

My proposal would to have candid individual interviews with each candidate. Ask them all the same 25 or so questions. You could even run a poll to select the questions, if polls are so important to FOX. Then, splice the videos together where Bret Baier asks each question, then have each candidate's 30 second answer.

After that, an hour of so analysis.

And if moderated by a MSM reporter, "gotcha" questions will be in the mix. The whole thing is a farce. It's endless political theater that's guaranteed to make the LIVs tune out. Hell, even *I* mostly tuned out the debates in the 2011-2012 campaign.

88 Maybe a bracket elimination on C-SPAN is the best option.

First month every candidate in four person groups has debates. After each debate episode, viewers cast ballots.

Those who make the first month cut then debate. And viewers vote.

Keep doing it until only three candidates are left.

And let them start the ground running in Iowa.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 20, 2015 06:56 PM (blHar)

89 If Fox goes ahead and does this, the excluded candidates should have their own "shadow" debates, on the Internet, at some savvy timeslot. I'm not a media expert, I don't know if the correct thing is to do it simultaneously with Internet live streaming, or just do it a day later right after the evening news or whatever.

The Libertarian candidates are used to being unfairly excluded; even if the Libertarian is on the ballot in all 50 states, they are never invited to the debates between the D and R candidates in the run up to the actual election. So I think sometimes Libertarian candidates have done the shadow debate thing.

It's sad that no libertarian candidate has ever gotten a significant chunk of the votes. You would think that liberty would be an easy thing to sell in the USA, but I guess not.

>And it's not just that -- some ex-Republicans, like myself, actively
want to increase taxes on the wealthy and corporations. (Well, I don't
want cuts for them, at least.) My reasoning? I'm tired of the
Ruling Class fucking over the rest of the party except when it comes to
one thing, their taxation levels. I'm interested in some punishment,
some discipline, and a message going forward.

>I don't get yelled at a lot when I propose this, either.
I'll
yell at you if you want. That's kind of like stabbing yourself in the
skull to teach the brain cancer a lesson. Any harm you do to them will
be negligible. Capital routes around taxes, regulations and any other
roadblocks you throw at it. Ask France. Life finds a way, usually through offshore
accounts and outsourcing. I'm not super concerned about their finances either - and
somebody who can afford to pick up and move their operation to the other
side of the world doesn't need me to be concerned about them - but in
99% of cases they're either in full collusion with the government or
beyond its reach.
The key to the results you're looking for
is getting somebody, whether it's the GOP or some future
third/replacement party to take a long-term historical view instead of
the good old Keynesian YOLO plan. Because the voters are not going to plan long-term, and a colder Brazil (but with nice gated communities!) is not a feasible plan for the future of a first-world country. How you can do that within the frame
of popular government, I'm not sure. You probably can't, for the same reason we'll fail to come up with a coherent policy for data collection. Short sightedness is a democratic specialty.

117 "And Rick Perry is the only potential candidate with a military background. That means everything to our son and all his vet buddies."

The last serving POTUS with a military background was George W. Bush.

That didn't stop Dubya from making absolutely horrific foreign policy blunders which got a huge number of military service members killed or permanently maimed.

And ultimately ending up with the goals for which they had been sacrificed also being sacrificed.

There were, what, something like 1300 American lives lost in pacifying Anbar and Ramadi, which are now being taken back with contemptuous ease by the Islamic State?

Some will no doubt say that this is Obama's fault, but Bush's enormous failures were what created the opportunity for Obama's meteoric rise in the first place. Obscure state legislators do not vault to the Presidency in only four years under normal political circumstances. The implosion of Dubya's presidency created an abnormal circumstance which Obama cleverly exploited.

139 This is how I would run a debate. The candidates are separated from each other. They are all asked the same ten questions and they have 5 minutes to answer each. They each have ten extra minutes that they can use to finish answers. If they mention another politician or their position, the microphone goes off and they lose the rest of that five minutes.

This means that they can say what they think, what they plan and what they will do but they cannot attack their opponent, or interrupt or assign blame to someone else.

Put the videos on line and the public can watch as much or as little of each as they like.

You beat me to it but there must be a way. We have to make the media understand they don't get to select who runs and gets to communicate with the public anymore. Why can't Fox have two debates? One after the other if the number is unmanageable. Two one and a half debates with each having half of the candidates would be workable.

Posted by: Lester at May 20, 2015 07:30 PM (2UPXV)

211 Idea.

Cruz and Walker, and a few others, come to an agreement that for the good of the Republic they'll run for President and VP, plus crucial cabinet...really put together a team of Avengers. They eschew jumping through ANY and ALL traditional media hoops, including Fox, by getting the $$$ backing (which would surely be made available) to buy ad time on TV, radio and internet. They nail the message down tight -- Democrats and RINOs (call 'em what they are) are WHY we are where we are -- and do not waver from it. Lay out simple goal and a path to get there. Take interviews as they come but be in command of them; do not simply respond but go on offense. Call media tapeworms what they are at every opportunity. In short, show true balls, NO patience with media, and a genuine love of country with no multiple layers of middlemen, filters and poll tweaks. Go direct to the people so the people can buy direct. Be honest, and don't be afraid to be angry and desperate because the rest of us are. Win or lose, let no one be able to mistake or misrepresent where you really, truly stand, and why.

I forget: Was it Graham or Huckabee who stayed late in the 2008 race, until everyone else dropped out?

I just remember that by the time of the Pennsylvania primary in May, there were only three candidates left: McCain, Ron Paul, and the other one. McCain pretty much had the nomination sewed up by that point.

Guess who I voted for. And what the hell choice did I have?

All he has to do is demonstrate conservative leadership for -say 15 years - as the chief executive of a US state ... it would have to be massive though - something the size of Texas.

Posted by: Aviator

It's not a matter of "fair share", I don't think they "owe" more taxes, I'm just saying I'm willing to make that exchange.

The Simpson-Bowles had $10 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases. I know the devil is in the details, but assuming it was true, I would make that trade.

It's also much easier later on to lower or reform taxes than it is entitlements.

The sticking point has always been the tax increases always come but the spending cuts don't. that's why it would need to be real entitelment reforms with say triggers to keep everyone honest.

My ideal would be one flat tax rate, from $1 to infinity, whether its capital gains or a wage.

I have come to the same conclusion as Ace. If you're going to use your wealth to buy the government, perhaps you can't be trusted with it (the wealth or the government). Perhaps once you have $200M or so, you should be taxed on wealth rather than income. Perhaps you should have a "come to Jesus" event to get your selfish head straight.

People simply do not understand that there is no such thing as a tax on corporations. The taxes are either (a) avoided--such as General Electric, as I recall, through increased corruption between corporations and politicians, (b) passed on as lower wages to employees, or (c) passed on as higher prices to consumers.

Maybe this needs to be on Dancing with Hayek.

287 Taxes are simple. That's why they make them so complicated.

Find the average cost of existence (food, shelter, clothing, transport, medical care) nationwide for one person.

Find the average cost of same for one child (include cost of education between ages 5-1

Now using that as the base (if you have dependents you add their cost in with yours) subtract that amount from your gross income.

Tax that amount.

COE can be updated yearly or every two years.

Right now this is what is done in a couple of states. There's a base amount that you don't pay taxes on. Once you earn more than the base, you pay taxes on the overage.

Easy peasy. HR Block and 15,000 accountants would scream bloody murder but hey; omelettes and eggs.

This covers the elderly on fixed incomes (unless they have large income)
This covers the folks with dependents.

This makes everyone get taxed according to what they earn beyond the basic needs.

Oh and no corporate taxes IF they maintain their Headquarters AND the largest portion of their manufacturing plant in the US. Otherwise they're taxed on all the income they earn here.

302 Letterman showed what a nasty dick he is when he made the joke about Palin's daughter and the baseball player. His excuse was that he thought he was joking about the older one. First of all, if he's half as intellectual as he seems to think he is, why didn't he know which daughter was which?

Second, since when is it funny for an extremely powerful, obscenely rich, sixty year old television personality to make a joke about about a single teen girl who screwed up and got pregnant? Not to mention the fact that he, oops, accidentally knocked up his girlfriend. When a man who is in the neighborhood of sixty years old can't use birth control effectively, he can hardly mock a kid.

Then, as if he wasn't already a big enough asshole, he gave a snotty, insincere apology. The first apology was so clearly insincere, that he had to give another one the next might.

The guy isn't just unfunny, he's an asshole. Besides which, like many conservatives, I'm fed up with entertainment industry people who act as if they're somehow morally superior to those greedy, rich republicans, when all the while they're getting mountains of money for themselves.

I would like one of the people to explain to me exactly how, in the way they live their lives, they are any different from rich republicans. Look at the neighborhoods they live in, the amount of luxury, the schools their kids attend, the people they associate with, the places they go to, the money they give to non-profits. How the hell are they any different from rich republicans, aside from the empty bullshit they spew?

Taxes on "the wealthy" are also taxes on S corps -- pass-through entities that are invariably small businesses, usually in manufacturing or some other capital equipment intensive field, where the retained earnings penalty eats you alive if you're a C corp.

So we, as a small business, scratch and claw and compete with China and manage to stay in business and even thrive, a little; and we end up paying a final marginal rate in the low 30s.

Fox, CNN, and the rest of you are just full of it.

10 is way too many. Assuming a two hour debate - at least 30 minutes too long for even most activists to pay close attention - 90 second answers, 2 minute opening and closing statements, that's no more than five questions altogether. In two hours. Assuming the moderators and panelists and the intro are all very brief.

And of the 50 answers, taking up 75 minutes, all that will matter is if someone commits a damaging gaffe. That's it.

If anyone thinks that's worth arguing about, have at it. Life is too short.

How about only allowing those who are "natural born Citizens" according to Article II, Section 1, paragraph 5 of the United States Constitution? I realize the Rule of Law and Constitution don't matter anymore, since we were "fundamentally transformed" into a neo-Marxist, totalitarian oligarchy by the illegitimate usurper Barry Soetoro. But we could eliminate Jindal, Rubio, and Cruz, none of whom are constitutionally eligible to be POTUS because they are NOT "natural born Citizens".

Don't believe me that it takes TWO CITIZEN PARENTS to even be eligible for POTUS and VPOTUS? Google the UNANIMOUS SCOTUS decision defining NBC - Minor v. Happersett. Oh, and the obvious (among many other disqualifications) ineligible for POTUS: Barry Soetoro (legal name never changed!) we all recognize as Barack Hussein Obama.
