I used to get kids asking me for after-school jobs. (Parents would ask on their behalf, too.) I'd say that I didn't hire anyone under age 16, and before they could ask, I'd explain the child-labor laws in New York:

"You can't use a box cutter or a step stool if you're 15. The law says 'cutting tools' and 'elevated surfaces' and I'm sure the state doesn't want a 15-year-old climbing onto a scaffold with a chain saw, but the way the law is written, you can't use a box cutter or a step stool until you're 16. I don't write the rules but I follow the rules, even the stupid ones."

328 288: "From last thread. We all applaud each other for pithy, excerbate things we 'would like' to say to pols. But.....we don't, actually, do we?"
________

No, we don't. A couple reasons for this: First, it never seems opportune or appropriate. Second, their response is predictable. "We have a government of the people and by the people, so you're the government, and if you're displeased with it, then you have to get more involved."

So, it's your fault. For myself, I reject the "of the people by the people" argument. I'm a citizen, but I'm not the government. Voting makes me no more part of the government than an All-Star ballot makes me a part of the National Hockey League.

And don't even get me started about "taxpayers' money." Money in a government treasury does not belong to the taxpayers; it belongs to the government. That money ceased to be mine as soon as I mailed my check. Congressman, Senator, Mr. President, it's YOUR money. All I ask of you is that you treat your money as though it were your money. Perhaps then you'd be more responsible with it.

Fun facts:
3% or less of Southerners owned slaves, yet the geniuses slavishly embraced it and enshrined it in their "constitution".
They then whined that W.Virginia seceding from their august company was illegal.
They also thought that it was a good idea to open fire on a military installation (Ft. Sumter) AFTER being told that the place would be theirs in three days time, since there were few rations in the fort.

3% or less of Southerners owned slaves, yet he confederate government issued orders for blacks, whether escaped from slavery r born free, to be enslaved by their armies. To their (partial) credit, some commanders refused to obey this order.

371 Yeah, Slavery was "dead". Revisionist crap. Slave importation had been banned two generations before the Civil War, so breeding was the economical choice, and breed they did. There were about 25 million people in the U.S., including more than 3 million slaves in the 1850's. It was not dead, or dying, or sick, or peaked.

436 One might argue the consequences of the Civil War, but one that is not addressed as often as it ought to be is this; the people of Southern heritage still retain a memory of what it is like to be on the losing side.

Not just psychologically, but materially. That sense does not exist in the North. In an important way, that is unfortunate. Very few in the North have any studied sense of the depredations that the South suffered during the war and Reconstruction. The ill fruits are being born to this day.

To no small degree, that sense has been reflected in the proportion of people from the South who have been responsive to service in the military.

Like standing on the gallows, losing has a way of focusing the mind.

And then the Whiskey Rebellion, after that the Seminole War.

463 You seem to have missed the point. The South lost..., and suffered terrible consequences.

They started it. They should have known that once the North got their shit together, they would be unstoppable.

Posted by: JoeF. at May 20, 2015 01:24 PM (sbxl6)

464 Yep, lotsa lessons to be learned from the civil war. The big question is, whose side will you be on this time?

Posted by: Oldsailors Poet. at May 20, 2015 01:25 PM (KbNXw)

465 the Seminole War.

Oh, sorry. Misheard you.

466 Jefferson Davis refused to include black Union soldiers or the Officers who commanded them in any exchange, throwing a monkey wrench in the works. That's some serious racism there, let your Army starve in a prison camp rather than release a single Negro. Grant is the one often blamed for the failure of the Dix-Hill cartel, but it was a two-way street.

476 I joked with my ex-hubby, whose family is from south GA, that I would kick his ass if his ancestors owned any of mine.

My ancestors with both slaves and slave-owners.

Slavery has fuck-all to do with the shit going on now.

It's pussified blacks and pussified whites and pussified everybody else that don't feel they're responsible for shit, and expect everything to be handed to them.

Damn.

I thought this was the broad who liked anal, vaginal, and then oral sex, -- in that order. And then she reserves the right to later claim rape if she changes her mind or her date doesn't call/text.

487 "Hey, a civil war thread, circa 2009."

I'd rather have a Civil War thread, circa 1996, when we had a president from Arkansas, a vice president from Tennessee, and a House speaker from Georgia whose district was hosting the Olympics, when the Super Bowl champions from Texas were seeking to earn a trip to Louisiana to reclaim their title.

493 And where did this idea that the Confederacy represented individual personal freedom come from? The South was run by an Elite gentry from day one. It was straight up feudalism. Most of the white population were serfs; serfs who were made to feel superior about themselves because at least they weren't Negro slaves. The elite played the serfs against the slaves. And the Democrat Party that represented the South was still playing that game up until around 1970....

Posted by: JoeF. at May 20, 2015 01:35 PM (sbxl6)

494 JoeF- That is a bunch of b.s. about the Elite and the serfs in the Confederacy. I have ancestors who both owned and did not own slaves. They all fought for the South. You need to read some real history, not what the yankees wrote.
