Sorry, I'm just dragging today.

But here's an optimistic note: Josh Earnest says that Obama's counter-terrorism policy has been "an overall success," despite losing three key states to ISIS.

What would a failure look like?

20 Interesting/controversial racial incident just happened in my life moments ago.

I was scheduled to be interviewed today on a radio station. (By phone.) Because this radio station was in another state, I knew nothing whatsoever about it -- it was just call-letters to me. One of several interviews this week. (To publicize something I'm associated with -- redacted for privacy's sake.)

The way these things generally work is that your publicist sets up the interview ahead of time, and then tells you the exact time it will be (live, on the air). So you mark your calendar and make absolutely sure you are sitting by the phone, because to miss a scheduled live media interview is major faux pas that will get everyone involved furious at you (and rightfully so).

Then about five or ten minutes ahead of time, the radio station's producer calls you up, to establish the connection, tells you exactly how the intro will play out, then puts you on hold, with the "background hold music" being the radio station's broadcast signal, so you can hear how the lead-up is happening. Then the host connects you and does the interview live. Etc.

I've done this countless times.

But this time, my interview was supposed to be a 2:00pm PST today with this unknown radio station. And 1:50 came and the phone didn't ring. Then 1:55, no ring. Starting to get concerned. 1:59, no ring. Worried. 2:00, no ring. Uh oh. Did they have the wrong number for me? Was my phone broken in some way? So in desperation, at 2:02 I picked up the phone and called the station, and said to the person who answered that I was supposed to be doing a live on-air interview at 2:00.

Now, I'm just reporting reality here, so don't blame me for the following narrative.

The woman at the station, who was pretty obviously black, from her accent, said that she was indeed the producer, and, lemme look at the schedule...ooops, whaddya know, yeah, you were scheduled today at 2pm. Kinda too late for that now, I guess. (It was 2:06 by now.) Then she went into this long tale of woe about how she was trying to get a grant written, and she had a lot of pressure on her, and people need to understand she is under a lot of stress.

While she is saying this, I google the station's call letters, and discover that it is an "urban format" station, which is the euphemism for "black" station, playing soul and rap.

Her self-exculpatory rant went on for many minutes, painting herself as the victim of pressures and stress and expectations that were unfair.

I suggested that maybe we could reschedule for a future day, and she said, yeah, maybe, call back in a month or so?

Well, that would be semi-pointless, because the publicity blitz is happening now, and in a month it would be much less effective.

So I said "Maybe" and we hang up, and then I call my publicist, who happens to be an Asian female, and I told he what happened, and her response was, "Again??? /This station has now flaked out on three different interviews so far this year, exactly like this. They're just so impossible to deal with at these stations. Forget it -- there's no way I'm rescheduling with them. I'm just not going to deal with these people any more. It's not worth the hassle."

Her syntactic transition from "this station" to "these stations" implied, without overtly saying so, that she generalized and was talking about black radio stations in general, which in her experience are just flaky and do not function at the same professional level as do other radio stations.

So: Does that make her a "racist"? Or is she simply responding to social realities, and that it's not racist to remove the black stations off of her media list, it's simply a fact that they make interfacing with them so difficult that it isn't worth one's time, and she's just being realistic?

Further study question: Does a lifetime of repeated experiences of this sort eventually lead to the ingrained attitudes that are now deemed "racism"???

55 Dear Cicero,

Just a few minutes ago I told CBS This Morning that I will announce my decision about running for President on Monday, June 1st in my hometown of Central, South Carolina.

The next president we elect will face the critical task of steering our nation back to a path of prosperity and security. We need someone who will do more than just talk about our nation's problems. We need a leader who is willing to tackle the tough issues head on and find bipartisan solutions.

If I decide to run for President, I will do everything possible to defeat those who want to destroy our nation and the values for which we stand. And if I do run, I will need a huge army of supporters and the funds necessary to run a winning campaign.

Well, since you insist on an answer ...

I'd say it could have just been that she was thinking in terms of marketing categories.

I suspect the stations on her list for the project are grouped together under some label like "Urban Top 40" or something like that.

So not exactly 'racist operandi,' but just an efficiency calculation under a marketing framework.

Second part, yep. Racism and the perception of racism are intertwined with the human experience. Which is why I find it irritatingly quixotic this post-modern obsession with TEH RATHISM!

It's like trying to eliminate lying, as in all lies ever told.

It may sound like a noble thing, but ultimately you will fail and you will destroy society.

93 Some one said today that we may be witnessing the start of the greatest religious war since the Crusades, but this will be Sunni versus Shia.
ISIS is predominately Sunni. The Saudi government (Wahabbi Sunni) doesn't really want much to do with them. There are Sunni in Iraq that don't want to have much to do with them.
Iran is mostly Shia, as are Hezbollah and Hamas. The Sunni in Iraq don't necessarily like the Iran backed Shia militias coming in because they are every bit as vicious as the Sunni ISIS.
Because of our feckless leadership, Iran will get the bomb followed shortly there after by the Saudi's. Shit will get all splodey over there with Israel between the Devil and the deep blue Mediterranean.

108 Okay, secret to keeping you out of the barrel:

As some of you are aware, this blogs comment thingy uses a limited subset of "bbcode" forum text formatting, for example, to italicize something you put the following (without the spaces between the brackets and the letter) around it:

[ i ]thing you want italicized[ /i ]

and thus:

thing you want italicized becomes italic.

So to stay out of the barrel, append [ /i ] [ /b ] [ /s ] [ /u ] (without the extra spaces between the bracket and the letters) to your signature, and you will automatically close any stray tags at the end of every post (those four cover the ones most people use).

Extra close tags do no harm, it's opening a tag like [ i ] and not closing it that causes problems.

The extra spaces "break" the tags and let you see what I'm writing about, tags that actually do something become invisible when posted.

Hope that helps.

I don't think so. There was no mixup with the appointment -- the producer definitely confirmed that I did indeed have an appointment to be interviewed on air today at that specific station -- she just totally flaked out and didn't inform the hosts and didn't call me at the appointed time.

170 For the Biblically inclined, Daniel 8 talks of Persia (Iran) launching an invasion to the north, west, and south in events leading up to the end times.

For seculars, the author of that piece stumbled upon a few geopolitical facts:

- Iran is a rough land that needs the wealth of Iraq to keep itself together.
- Iraq, in turn, is easy to take but also hard to defend. (Those mean the same thing.)
- When Iran takes Iraq, it needs weak competition further west (and south). So it usually ends up going for Yemen and Syria too, sometimes Anatolia and Egypt if it can get 'em.
- This usually overextends Iran (Cyrus and Darius being exceptions), which results in UTTER FUCKING CHAOS in the whole region.

IIRC the last time the Iranians pulled this shit, Allah blessed the world with His Prophet. *That* was fun.

Most spiders do not bite humans. They may bite something ON you and get you by mistake I suppose but unless pursued and cornered or surprised they don't offer much aggression.

There are all sorts of bugs that can hitch a ride on your clothes and then bite you when you become still.

Bedbugs will also do so and you don't need an infestation to get bit.

We moved into our house 15 years ago this July. So, the house is open all day while the movers are movin' stuff.

About three nights later, my husband wakes up in the middle of the night with his left hand feeling like it's on fire. He goes in the bathroom and runs cold water over it, and sees two small marks on his hand.

The next morning, he crawls out of bed and sees a large wolf spider on the floor next to his side of the bed, which he promptly killed.

Yes, I have actually seen them bite me a couple times, and when a similar sore now shows up, I assume it's a spider. I don' t know what they are really called, but I call them funnel spiders because of the type of web they weave.

I would love a pet jumping spider, if it was about 3-4 feet long. But that doesn't work, their metabolism is too inefficient, they'd need way more atmospheric oxygen.

No. She is simply responding in a reasonable way to the information/ situation that is being presented to her.

For example: you get on an inner city bus. Every time you get on inner city bus, you get mugged. So you stop going on the bus. Is this racist? No. You are simply responding to the situation presented to you.

308 I used to kill spiders on sight when I was younger, but eventually switched to catching them in jars and releasing them outside.

A peanut butter or mayonnaise jar is a good size. I have them in every room of the house, along with a piece of cardboard to slide over the opening once I've trapped them against the wall or ceiling.

This works 98% of the time, even with large wolf spiders. But sometimes my aim is poor, especially with a moving spider, and I inadvertently amputate a leg when I slam the jar down. Oops, sorry. I actually do feel bad when that happens.

I also keep flyswatters in every room of the house. Those are for centipedes, for which I show no mercy.

One of the houses I lived in when I was a kid was as you describe. I saw spiders constantly. We eventually figured out that they were coming in through the fireplace chimney. A couple of times we build a large fire and could see them dropping from the inside of the chimney into the fire.

The sting is like a bee or wasp, maybe a little worse. The things will hide anywhere. You learn to pick up your shoes and shake them out before you try to put them. Before you put on your gloves you ball them up and mash and the fingers to kill one should it be in one. Etc.

407 Most horrible wasps stings ever.

We were living in SC and I had a great horse I showed (but he was also a pet like a dog) who was out in the pasture up near the house.

There was a cedar tree near his water trough. Looked out one evening and saw him standing with his head near the ground, looking bad.

I ran out to him and noticed his entire neck was swollen. Huge. And in the cedar tree was a giant wasp nest we'd never noticed. He'd apparently rubbed up against it as he approached his trough.

Long story short, the vet said to put baking soda on his neck for 30 min., followed by ice for 30 min. And repeat. Which our family of four did all night, in shifts.

We saved his life. Poor fellow would have died, as his throat was closing up.

I hate wasps. And yellow jackets.

To be fair, one of the most intelligent persons I have ever met was black, as well as my long time Karate instructor. Both men have my respect and admiration. I can not help but be uneasy around blacks, male or female. It has been my experience that they act largly like self centered children, and I will not turn my back on one. I did to him what we did to my wasp-stung horse in SC.

After giving him a Tylenol (the horse didn't get one), I made a paste of baking soda and put it behind his knee, covered by a warm, wet wash cloth. After a bit, I iced the back of his knee. Repeated the process one more time.

482 I hate cockroaches. I lived in a slum once and the place was infested. If you see a cockroach, there's a 1,000 behind the walls for each one you see.

I tried to do something about it but the building was like 70 years old and had a restaurant downstairs (yeah, I know).

They would swarm my cats's food dish and one day the cat went over and then sat down and just looked at it (he was late to dinner).

I went over to see what was going on and the bowl was full, literally full of cockroaches. See usually he'd eat the food before they could get to it.

So I went after them with spray. I sprayed everywhere like two or three cans (small efficiency type apt).

After about a minute, the walls started crawling with them trying to escape the spray. There were bugs falling off the wall and hitting the floor like rain drops on a tarp.

plop, plop, plop etc.

Moved out the next week. (it was convenient to my job and cheap but enough's enough)

So: Delenda Est Blattodea.

When I was in college, our suite was infested with German cockroaches (the smaller ones). I thought they were fascinating to watch. We generally left them alone and thought they were kind of cool. We were a bunch of young stoner guys. What can I say?

When the time came to leave college, I washed all of my clothes, and carefully inspected all of my possessions, and sealed everything in plastic bags. I did not want to introduce cockroaches into my parents' house, which had never had them.

About three days after I got home, I went down to the kitchen at midnight, turned on the light, and saw a roach go tearing across the floor. I stomped that sucker barefoot without hesitation. That was the only one I ever saw.

486 Yeah, our son described camel spiders as face huggers.

They were on a FOB, chilling out after a convoy. Suddenly, this large rat ran across the ground in front of them. Chasing it was a huge camel spider.

Son said it was "terrifying." The camel spiders run with these grabbing legs in the air to grab their prey.

Well, the camel spider won. Ate the rat head first.

Also, the camel spiders would chase the Marines to get in their shade.

Our son was chased by one. Jumped up in his vehicle "just in time." How he hated them.

I eliminate black widows so rapidly that they won't feel any pain.

As for wolf spiders, the species which go by that monicker around here are ones that are not a threat to humans, and don't spin trap webs in the house. They're energetic little nocturnal hunters who run down their prey, patrolling along wall and ceiling edges after dark, and typically retreat to quiet corners at dawn. Never have caused any problem other than the occasional startle while getting a midnight snack.

493 That day, we hired our first exterminator.

We have zillions of black widows in our area in CA. I'm pretty used to them, that's what bug spray is for.

However a about 4 years ago, I saw a gigantic, and I mean gigantic spider running at a full sprint in our living room. Freaked the living f* out of me. I tried to get it in a jar, but it was too fast, and the jar was too small. So I smashed it with my shoe. and tossed it out.

I decided that this wasn't a normal spider and I looked it up. Turns out, some sort of spider from the Mediterranean has made its way over here. It doesn't like to be outside in the winter, so it comes indoors. It likes to hide in laundry and things like that. Did I say this sucker is big? Did you see arachnophobia?

http://tinyurl.com/kqxou64
They're asking for help to see how these cute little things adapt. They say a 2" spider (this thing was bigger, the second one was about 2") is small compared to a tarantula. Tarantulas are outside buddy. And, they move really slow.

Since then I've seen one other (indoors again, of course), but that's been it for 2-3 years now. Apparently they're relatively harmless, other than causing strokes and heart attacks. You know it's bad news when the dog goes the other direction after getting a good look at it.

Their ability to move in quantum leaps is quite disturbing.

I may be getting the various "lying bitches gotta lie" stories mixed up. There's 3 guys that I know about for sure are suing their college for naming them as a rapist or allowing the plaintiff to name them as a rapist.

This is ALL Eric Holders fault. A simple "turn all reports of rape over to the local law enforcement" advisory would've done the trick.

Purposefully targeting political organizations for affecting their ability to function as a political organization
and Suppression of Political speech on the behalf of the government.

I am so glad that the minimum penalty of $10,000 or one year imprisonment FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL VIOLATION UNDER IRS CODE will not be required, since the resolution of this is the change the "style manual"

He WOULD win (not just "electable".) RR is not going to be running in this election. Plus, he would have a better record than RR in SC nominations.

Wrangler, huh? Thanks for the heads up. Can't do online though. Gotta try jeans on for a fit. around here these days there's only like Lowes and cheap asian made (shorty sizes) places, or high dollar boutique shops (big $$$). The Levi/Wrangler outlets that used to be ubiquitous are gone it seems.

If Mom asked Dad for a new car and he said no, then the next day she "accidentally" drove her old car off a boat launch, it wouldn't take Dad long to figure out what happened.
