Ben Domenech: Lindsay Graham Is An Unhinged Kook Who Shouldn't Be Taken Seriously

Read the excerpt at Hot Air or Ben Domenech's full article.

I think this is an important piece. Domenech is right; Lindsay Graham is afforded by media progressives as being an "adult in the room" on foreign policy, at least as far as those stupid Republicans go.

But why should he be?

As Domenech lays out, Graham has a very simple, direct, and clear idea of the farthest reach of Executive power: to wit, that there isn't one.

McCain and Graham both share this same conception of civilian society as basically the same as the military hierarchy: Our freedoms must always give way to the Organization's goals, and there is a definite chain of command, and he at the top is, for all intents and purposes, King.

And, of course, we should bomb everywhere on earth that troubles us, early and often.

I think the progressives credit Graham as an "adult in the room" for this very reason that Domenech identifies: Graham's concept of government and society is precisely the same as the progressives' -- we are not important; only acting collectively in the corporate whole can we achieve great things.

This is a conception of society that is abhorrent to the Republican tradition, never mind -- again, as Domenech points out -- the American Constitution itself.

The US military is a fantastic institution. Some who have served in it, like McCain, and, to a lesser extent, Graham, come away with a more profound respect for it than any civilian could have.

However, we are in fact civilians, and if we wanted to serve in an armed forces, we would volunteer. Grahamism is a philosophy which blurs the lines between solider and civilian in very much the same way that Lenin and Stalin did.

I respect the diminished liberty that soldiers have volunteered to live under in order to efficiently protect my life. However, my respect stops well short at embracing those diminishments of liberty for myself.

Related: Chris Christie says, regarding the NSA and Patriot Act, "you can't enjoy your civili liberties if you're in a coffin."

I'm not saying that puts him in Graham's Executive Uber Alles class of statist; but if I don't link this here, I won't link it at all. Christie is plainly no longer a threat to be president.

36 Even the military isn't nearly as hierarchical as guys like McCain or Graham think. In fact, the US military tends to work best when operating on the edge of chaos, where the guys at the lowest level have freedom to accomplish the mission as they think best and where we don't let doctrine kill a good idea.

54 But Graham running for Preezy raises a question: where do these kooks get the impression anyone will vote for them? I understand there used to be "favorite son" candidacies, where some politico would ensure his favored platform items would become party law and his favored employees would get Interior Department jobs, but in these national campaign days those kinds of parochial candidacies seem to have disappeared. Somebody must be underwriting this Grahamian fantasy. Who could it be?

I'm no particular fan of Lindsey Graham, but get your facts straight. He served in the Air Force on active duty from 1982 to 1989. He then joined the South Carolina Air National Guard until 1995, when he finally entered the Air Force Reserves. There was a link to a local patch site earlier that I saw, that Christie basically said "NJ voters want me to stay as governor and not run for president"

I don't think he's going to get in, he had a limited window in the last cycle where he could do no wrong, but things haven't gone well for him, and he's really damaged his standing within the party. His convention speech, the obama embrace, the bridge thing (which is absurd... I expect, nay demand my NJ politicians to ruthlessly exact political revenge agains their enemies) lot's of unforced errors. Things aren't going well here, and he's not getting the same juice that he used to from soundbytes of him yelling at teachers.

104 It's common to engage in wistful what-if scenarios regarding 2008, but the hard reality is that if McCain had genuinely and forcefully engaged against Obama, gone on the offensive, conducted oppo research and used it, fired his treasonous and incompetent campaign staffers, and fought the campaign through to a narrow win, what would have actually resulted?

Answer: the likes of Grahamnesty would have risen to new levels of prominence and power in a McCain administration.

(While Sarah Palin would have been forced out of the picture into some obscure internal exile, trotted out only when they needed someone to go attend the funeral of the former deputy prime minister of Macedonia.)

Then we found out about more of his positions, and they weren't so good.

I mean, New Gingrich was never going to get the nomination, neither was Michelle Bachman, or Herman Cain, or Buddy Roemer. Huntman, he's not a conservative, Santorum a social-con/big government type. Perry stumbled out of the gates with the terrible debate system we continue to use....

And those jobs are NOT coming back to the L.A. basin, nor to anywhere else in Commiefornia.

Shedding jobs at the high end of the wage scale, while simultaneously shifting the lower end of the wage scale upwards to lose jobs there, too.

Last I looked, Los Angeles County had something like 55% of its population dependent upon government transfer payments in some way, shape or form. Looks as though it won't be long before it's up to two-thirds.

But Washington DC Statists, and those of us who are for Freedom and Liberty.

Graham is not a Democrat, he is a Republican Statist... which is just as threatening to our Liberty, as Obama is.... because he is supposed to be in the party which would LIMIT the over reach of those in the other party...

They have not been doing that since the early 1900s.... when they decided to start changing the RULES by which they would play... instead of competing within the rules...

I can think of few that did not extend the reach of executive power when it suited them to do so, some in more restrained fashion than others.

Nixon's biggest failure as President was not Watergate or Vietnam, it was the wholesale extension of the administrative-law state in a manner achieved by few before or since.

218 Heinlein's 'Virginia' edition is the leather bound set of everything he ever wrote, including private letters. One of the letters in the promo material for the set was an off hand mention that Heinlein was a bit of a fan of authoritarian government. Taken at the time of the cold war 50-60-70s and so forth, it might be understandable.

He thought that during the cold war, an authoritarian government was needed to face down threat of communism.

I can sympathize with that point of view 'cuz if I was ever elected President, there would be some changes made. Which is the danger, of course.

Incidentally, if anyone wants to gift me two thousand bucks, I'll buy one of those sets of Heinlein's work, if there are any left.

The people making the Gosnell movie interviewed Gosnell in prison. Thinks got very weird. very. Weird.

"The interview was one of the creepiest we have ever conducted," McAleer continued -adding that the abortionist reportedly groped fellow Gosnell movie filmmaker Ann McElhinney, saying "Gosnell continually touched her inappropriately and sang love songs."

Ultimately, when additional details are made available, "It will be a shocking interview - with shocking details of Gosnells life behind bars and his complete lack of remorse for his horrific crimes."

McAleer concludes about Gosnell: "He is so relaxed, he has no remorse and behaved completely inappropriately with Ann =touching her and singing love songs -it was a bizarre, bizarre experience."

You didn't miss too much. It's a couple fairly large rooms with equipment/uniforms under glass and on display. Nothing spectacular.

I know what you mean regarding the architecture, but heck, I kinda like the style.

337 Seems a little like Domenech verges of the fallacy of the excluded middle, or the false dilemma if your prefer.
The drone is a new tool. If you just want to transmute tangos into a greasy spot with the loss of some high-energy ions from the vapor portion of the tango remains, it seems just the ticket. If they're foreigners, I don't have a problem with it. Think of the savings in lives, time, and treasure. We should do more of it. (And, btw, why don't we have have some nice camps where we can keep prominent Muslims as hostages?)
American citizens have inalienable rights. They can't even give them away without renouncing their citizenship. Of course, at some point...
However, government must be strictly limited to enumerated powers, else we become serfs.
Oh, wait!

338 In 2003, you had to be in country for at least six months before you got your combat patch.

By 2009, 24 hours.

Fuck Lindsay.

339 "However, being a JAG does not offer one the same perspective as say, being a maneuver battalion commander."

Let's also remember that the JAG corps were handed the job of enforcing plainly ridiculous and unreasonably subjective rules of engagement. Stuffing liberal lawfare down the throats of the rank and file soldiery.

Instead of pushing back against the command structure and saying, "This is facially unlawful and we're bound by oath to reject such measures, they are not reasonably enforceable, and the guidelines provided need to be far more clear than they are," the JAG-offs instead saluted smartly and went out and ruined a bunch of lives and military careers over gray-area post-hoc judgement calls.

340 graham will split the vote with Jeb in SC. That's a good thing.

341 great post Ace. It seems to me whenever a retired GO runs for office, it's on the D ticket. They like telling people what to do. Fuck that.

Still gotta say that ANYONE who served honorably (and it pains to have to qualify it) in ANY capacity deserves to be honored for their service.

343 I think people here VASTLY overestimate the Establishment.

Figures like Graham are running because they're arrogant enough to think they can be President. It's not some 3rd dimensional chess where he's posing as a stalking horse for someone else. Do you really think Lindsey's ego would allow him to play that subservient role to another politician?

South Carolina has a pretty shitty track record (after all they keep electing Graham) so I'm not terribly disappointed if he basically takes SC out of the game and splits the self-loathing Republican vote with other people like Jeb or Christie.

344 Although, in the Officer's Club afterwards, no one can really figure it out after the first three shots...

But, at four AM when your shooting empty Jack bottles off the back deck, it becomes apparent again.

346 New thread I know but for years United States had to enforce no fly zone I think to the tune of 200,000 sorties flown to keep Saddam from killing masses of Kurds in the north and Shia in the south. The U.S. media might not have reported it much just like they ignore the massacres occurring now.

Why? Well President Clinton was the president for much of the no fly zone enforcement and Obama is presiding over the mass terrorism now.

350 America has over 300 million citizens. On 9/11, around 3000 died. Do the remaining 300+ million not get full rights anymore because 3000 died?

If so, as Christie implies, then the terrorists won.

352 Why is it that the 'pubs trot out this numb nuts and grandpa McCain EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY to represent the party on the news shows? I guess they pull rank on any young whippersnapper that thinks he can put forth a reasoned argument in their place. The party is full of young, diverse and intelligent people and this is what America sees instead. The stupid party, indeed.

...says more about the electorate than the elected. Just sayin' SC.

354 234 - As I remember, there was this little $63 million tax abatement / credit for 500 jobs - 400 of which were transfers from Seattle. Pretty efficient for 100 jobs for area people.

I forgot about the promise for a heliport. It hasn't happened although it looks like it is pretty close - one near west and one in Bridgeport.

Who would have thought Chicago would "forget" about the heliport - since Mayor Richie! Daley loved aviation and all - see Meigs Field.

355 The notion that authorized military action need not be halted for a warrant in the case of an American traitor is not kooky.

The notion that a judge needs to sign off on previously authorized military action just because the combatant is an American traitor is kooky, unAmerican, and a violation of two hundred years of American history.

There's dozens of cases from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and the Mexican American war. The execution of the San Patricios battalion was NOT a civil rights crisis for the Union.
