Economist: The Economy Might Stink For a Long Time to Come

Rush Limbaugh was just talking about this article, which had been published in the New York Times. His take was that as it had been excerpted at Yahoo News, Low Information Voters and Millennials (but I repeat myself) would actually see it when they came to Yahoo to read about "Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez and her butt."

The economy might stink for a while.

Writing in the New York Times this weekend, economist, author, and blogger Tyler Cowen says that we might need to get used to the idea that the economy will continue to underperform our expectations.

Cowen says that right now there are two core outlooks on the economy, both of which are inherently optimistic.

One says that things like low wage growth and low interest rates are phases that will pass, and the other is that we merely didn't appreciate how long it would take to recover from the financial crisis.

But is it a foregone conclusion that things will just get back to "normal"?

Tyler Cowen writes in the New York times that we may be experiencing a "Great Reset," in which the economy is shifting for a permanent reduction in output and wealth.

Let's consider an analogy to see how this might work in practice.

Well before the recent recession, many colleges and universities realized that they could not afford so many full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members, and they began to increase their reliance on lower-paid adjuncts. Few institutions fired large numbers of full-timers suddenly, because that could have left them understaffed if trends reversed. Longstanding protections of tenure were also a constraint. Instead, many administrators added modestly to the number of adjunct faculty members, sometimes over decades, relying on retirement and attrition to manage the shift in a relatively smooth manner.

That evolution reflects a more general principle: Institutional rigidities don't permit adjustments to occur all at once, but by studying continuing changes we may be able to peer around a corner and see where a sector is headed.

Such processes are scary because we may be watching the slow unfolding of a hand that, in its fundamentals, has already been dealt.

There are signs that a comparable story may apply to the American economy more broadly.

In manufacturing, for example, Ford, Chrysler, General Motors, Caterpillar and Navistar (formerly International Harvester) all pay many of their new workers much less. In some of these two-tier structures, the new wage may be as little as half the old one. In addition to this rapid change, the companies also seem to be reducing the ranks of highly paid workers through slow attrition.

...

All of these factors could indicate that our economy is evolving into one that will offer far less favorable long-run wage prospects....

In short, are these economic problems transitory, or are we glimpsing the beginnings of a grimmer future?

Cowen notes that the negative effects -- reduced wages, chiefly -- fall disproportionately on the young, aka The Obama Generation, so the next generation is being taught to accept lower wages, both now and in their futures.

Limbaugh's take -- apart from the fact that the ignorant would finally see some news about the Obama economy -- is that this article is still making excuses for Obama, still suggesting that this is entirely due to tectonic structural forces that Obama couldn't possibly have anything to do with, and obviously, then, he should not be blamed.

It is astonishing to see how our economy has essentially been downsized to Italy West, and yet the elites are so heavily invested in Obama they 1, try to ignore this fact, and 2, when forced to confront it, claim that policy is entirely irrelevant when dealing with such large-sized structural forces.

Obama wanted to transform America into a European country.

Well, he got his wish.

Why don't the elites celebrate this, instead of trying to cover it up?

13 In other, completely unrelated news:

48% of the country is not only unemployd but has stopped looking for work, and so don't appear on the "unemployment rolls" and don't appear in the statistics.

In reality, the percentage of people who are unemployed now is GREATER than it was even at the height of the Great Depression in the 1930s, and is the highest in history.

But that fact is disguised by statistical sleight-of-hand.

Worse, many of those unemployed have now become hooked on government entitlements and handouts -- what used to be called "welfare."

In short, not only in the economy in the ditch, Obama may very well have ruined it permanently.

Pretty much, yeah. I know lots of small business owners who would love to hire somebody. But the motivation in the middle class wage area is non-existent. Maybe because there's zero stigma attached to those EBT cards. Hell, there's ads in the markets for those things, oddly in Spanish. Right next to the whooping cough shots sign.

We're importing people to take the jobs of those who would like to work, and then when the next wave comes in, give those guys welfare too. California is a perfect model of how boned the rest of the country will be by the end of the decade.

It is going to be ugly, though, as people's delusions are disabused by reality.

112 Here's the thing... this is the trend.

But this did not begin with the election of Obama (although he certainly helped speed it up).

Are some "natural forces" at play? Sure. Cheaper labor abroad, increased efficiency, better technologies, etc.

But at some point, massive debt, massive regulations, a business environment that discourages discourages innovation and entrepreneurs leads to a situation in which *real* economic growth (as opposed to "economic growth by government spending) becomes near impossible. Yes, we may have some "good" quarters here and there, but the trend line of continued, sustained growth begins to stall. Maybe not truly reversing itself, but flat lining.

And that's where we are.

So to many of us millennials, blaming it on Obama or Bush is kind of... disingenuous.

We saw our grandparents live in a time where no matter what you did for a living or where you invested your money -- stock market, housing, bonds, whatever) or even if you didn't invest any money, you did pretty well in life. Owned a house, a car, a TV, etc.

We saw our parents basically continue on that trend (with diminishing returns) until a lot of them got slightly to majorly boned in the stock market and housing markets in the '99-'09 period.

...And now we enter the workplace and see that no matter what we do, the majority of our money goes to taxes, compliance costs, forced monopolies (like the cable company or water company or whatever) and our standard of living doesn't seem to be improving as we age and make more money.

So, anyways, yeah. Some disjointed thoughts there, but ask anyone in their 20s or 30s what they think about their economic future -- poll after poll has shown that people are not very optimistic.

Posted by: Super Creepy Eric Hoteham at May 18, 2015 04:09 PM (oDCMR)

132 Global market expansion has played a significant part in this reduction. All types of job are being outsourced and it's not just service type positions. THis now includes some positions that require intellectual capital. Those are the ones which should scare everyone to death as that's been the ultimate mainstay of our economic prowess. As we moved from manufacturing to a more skilled workforce, especially in industries such as financial services, we led the world in innovation, intellectual capital and the formulation of new products/services. But we've given that up as countries start to arbitrage factors such as regulatory and tax environments.

What the president has done is to effectively "outsource" the aforementioned for a good pathos argument. Tax the rich, means an insufferable situation for anyone he considers "rich", including corporations who are losing reasons to pay one of the highest tax rates in the developed world. The product coming out of universities is substandard as we lower the standards and push people into college that never belong there in the first place.

Summarily, the president has destroyed the future employment market by creating conditions which either dilute intellectual capital, attack specific industries for a good, throaty political meme (financial services, where Republicans are doing the same BTW) or create financial disincentives. I have never seen this amount of market dislocation in all my years. Ever- and that's stating alot.

143 And the discussion to date leaves out the elephant in the room on both the macroeconomic front and the microeconomic front.

Which is the effect on economic growth and job growth of Obama's insane energy policies. Those alone are going to be sufficient to knock 1%-2% off of attainable economic results for the next decade or more. And they cannot be rapidly reversed by a successor.

(Reagan was able to lead an energy renaissance because Carter hadn't torn down America's energy infrastructure, merely mismanaged and disincentivized it. The left learned from that.)

In an earlier discussion, Obama's energy policies were referred to as being "scarcity as policy" intended to make it harder for ordinary Americans to get by economically without government assistance, and further locking in the talons of the perpetual-dependency state. I see no reason to demur from that suggestion now.

166 I really don't think that politicians, as a group, are idiots. Their "service" has become their profession and they are there to get from it what they can.

But I also believe they know what potentially, is coming. They know our debt is unsustainable. They know that people are frustrated. They see how people are being incited against each other to divert their attention from the true source of their perpetual relegation to the lower class.

They know that eventually something is going to break and that if it breaks, it will break in the midst of another economic downturn. And can you imagine another downturn happening now, when so many have been left behind in the "recovery". Things could get messy, is my bet.

I also bet that they (the politicians) will be ready. They will not give up their place at the trough without resistance.

Well that's the thing.

In all honesty, I haven't heard anyone even remotely close to the levers of power even suggest anything that would do anything close to fixing these now structural problems in our economy and system of government.

And there's no guarantee that returning to normal interest rates, massively gutting the fed gov and entitlements and regulations and compliance costs and etc etc would fix everything at this point. Best shot we have, I'd say, but no guarantee.

30-40 years ago, yes we had a great shot. But now?

Nope. The Republicans want no part of that debate today, and they didn't want it back in the 1990s either, back when NAFTA, GATT and China MFN were all in the works. It was left to Ross Perot (!) to publicly argue for the corner of the American working class.

Infrastructure is great stuff. The fundamental problem being that there are plenty of opportunities for grift when politicians control its funding, and when it goes to usual-suspects types such as the ones behind "Rebuild California".

That's what has given CA the likes of the SF Bay Bridge rebuild. Horribly behind schedule, massively over budget, and the goddamn thing now that it is ostensibly complete is absolutely rife with engineering and fabrication mistakes. Unemployment was 4-5 percent (which is considered 'full' employment or used to be) during most of the bush years, and that wasn't long ago. I don't think this is the trend, except for the regulatory environment and all it takes is the right people in charge to pull back on that. All we need is a Reagan with some vision and will.

Obamacare, among other regulatory decision on the administration part, has basically killed hiring for years. The banking crisis didn't help, certainly.

>>we never REALLY corrected for the housing bubble, frankly.

This is true to some extent as well. The problem is, nobody wants to let the economy cycle through a small recession. They keep trying to fix everything, with QE's and low interest. I think a little pain in the short run is generally a better approach with fewer lasting consequences.

202 >>How do you come back from the situation we are in, where its more financially wise to NOT work in many cases then it is TO work?

Only when they are turned around. Reagan did it. Clinton, with some serious assistance from Congress did it. It can be done but it takes a will to do it.

We can either elect people with that will or sooner or later we will have a system that forces us to change in a ways similar to the throes Greece is going through right now. Hopefully, our population will not go full retard like the Greeks if we come to that crossroads.

It has always been financially better for some to not work rather than work. What Obama has done is ratchet that dial further left. We've got to start ratcheting back the other way.

But first we need to get government off the backs of business. The amount of regulation and cost we go through every year in my small company is astounding and it has governed our ability to grow and to hire. This is the default state of most companies in the US today. Fix this and the system will go a long way toward righting itself.

The proof being what exactly?

The financial service sector is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the country. More so now after the crisis.

It's killing the entire country by tying up capital and limiting access to certain financial products that have always bee there too use. Ultimately that's hurting capital and capital investments.

There are very limited options the industry is being presented with.

Until a president, and Congress for that matter, who agrees and understand free, capitalistic markets, that won't change.

As a result the country and people will suffer.

But they can keep beating the bogeyman to distract from their incompetence.

Reagan, who I respect a lot and whose Goldwater speech (a time for choosing) was (in my humble opinion) the best political speech in US history, still presided over a growing federal government, growing regulations, and our transition from a savings-based economy to a debt-based economy.

Yes, Nixon's yanking us off the gold standard was a culprit. Yes, Carters disastrous policies led to a lot of pent up demand, etc etc etc, but... it was a temporary reprieve but Reagans time in DC did not change the trajectory of our country and economy.

And Clinton just happened to get lucky presiding during the tech boom, before the bubble burst.

The proof of what?

Yes, they're highly regulated. The cronies in the industry work with lobbyists and congressmen to write the regulations.

JP Morgan and a handful of the other TBTF banks, for example, are the ones who launder the money from the fed to the treasury when the fed monetizes our debt. They get a cut.

They also manage EBT cards, and they get a cut.

Laws are written to benefit the handful of big banks at the expense of the smaller community banks. Just like they are in every other industry.

Except theres a lot more money at play in the financial industry, and it's so fucking complicated to follow and understand that they get away with shit other industries could only dream of.

I was in a Chili's recently and they have the tablet on the table to place your order. Still have a server and they still expect a tip for basically being a food runner. I read something recently that restaurants that have these have more sales as it is easy for the customer to place additional orders for more drinks etc. At the same time the server gets less in tips as customers don't perceive as high a value in the server if they place their own orders. Eventually, it would seem that the restaurant would be better off with a tablet and a few poorly paid food runners.

__________________________

This argument that Obama had nothing to do with the factors that led to the collapse of the real estate market is total bullshit. As a Chicago lawyer, Obama was one of the people suing banks to force them to make mortgage loans to unqualified borrowers, in the name of "racial justice." As a senator, Obama was one of the idiot Dims braying for Fannie and Freddie to lower standards again and again, and take on more and more risk, in the interests of "racial justice" and "fairness" (i.e., more taxpayer-guaranteed home loans to more and more unqualified borrowers, including millions of illegal aliens). Obama was also one of the Dim senators who repeatedly voted against George W. Bush's efforts to put the brakes on some of the worst abuses in the mortgage lending industry.

The "tectonic forces" that crashed the U.S. real estate market were a direct result of the irresponsible and stupid "activist" policies of idiots like Barry Obama. And the past 6-1/2 years of sluggish non-recovery from that disaster are also the direct result of idiotic Obama policies.

I'm just not optimistic it will be turned around even if it could be.

No one is even suggesting the kind of radical change that would be necessary to jump start our economy and to change the incentive structure.

And even if they could, and had a compliant congress, and pulled everything off -- I fear it may be too little too late.

Keep in mind that we have $18 T and counting in federal debt + the entitlement bomb ticking away in the shadows + exploding state / local debt + a huge generation ("baby boomers") beginning to retire and leave the work place and availing themselves of their (untouchable) "retirement security" in the form of SS, medicare, and (for the lucky few) pensions.

All of which must be paid for by a population of workers that's not even replacing itself, and a large per centage of whom don't work at all, and a good per centage of whom work but still get a net benefit on tax day and don't "pay in to the system" at all.

Everybody lobbies Congress one way or another.

Please give me a specific example of how the "laws are written to benefit a handful of banks". Just one with specifics.

Yes, the PD's monetize the debt. Do you realize what's required for them to do that?? Notwithstanding some FI HAS to do that?

I've met with Congress often. These people don't want to hear what the industry says. They're not interested because they like a good emotional whipping boy.

But they can't figure this whole bad economy thing out.

*BLINK*

The laws are often grotesque in their overreach and written by clowns who don't know anything about the industry. Or capitalism for that matter. Someone postulated that the reason Stocks are going ups not that the stock value has increased.
But, that the actual value of the purchasing dollar has decreased.

--

Correct. The actual value of a stock is the assets of the business plus a going concern premium (goodwill), divided by the number of shares. As the dollar depreciates, the stock goes up, but is not necessarily more valuable.

Same goes for gold. When gold was selling for $20 in the 1920s, a good man's suit sold for the price of an ounce of gold. Now that gold is around $1500, the suit costs that much.

...uh one example?

Okay, Dodd-Frank.

Do you think Chris Dodd and Barney Frank sat around and wrote that law? Do you think they understand the financial markets at all?

Dodd-Frank is killing smaller banks with compliance costs, codifies the idea of "too big to fail" in to our legal framework, and benefits larger banks who can afford teams of lawyers and accountants to be in compliance.

I'm not saying it's the banks FAULTS -- shit, I'd do the same thing if Congress came to me with their hands out and said "we love to help our friends... but we crush our enemies" but that's the incentive system in place.

Look at Microsoft in the 90s. They had 1 part time lobbyist in DC and barely paid attention to politics.

Until they were threatened with an anti-trust case because they were bundling IE with Windows.

Now, they're in the top 5 donors in every campaign cycle, have any army of lobbyists, and do everything they can to stay in the good graces of the lobbyists.

Google went through a similar epiphany.

Again, I don't blame the CEO of Microsoft. He did what he had to do to keep his business growing.

But to deny that that system exists is... I mean, come on.

China is an enormous fraud that keeps being held up as a global success story by central planning fans like Tom Friedman.

I was in Hong Kong a few months ago and my customer was telling me that the Hong Kong authorities are instituting new rules for travel for Chinese nationals to Hong Kong. The reason is that people were flocking over the border on a daily basis and cleaning out the stores for basic supplies raising prices and causing shortages for the locals. The most noteworthy of the items experiencing shortages was baby formula.

A country the size of China that can't provide the basics like baby formula to its citizens has some serious fundamental issues.

Oh, we're already in a feudal system.

As I understand it, the words land lords required their serfs to pay between 1/3 to 1/2 of their crops in taxes to them.

Of course, the serf got land to live on and work, protection from the lord of the land against the lawlessness, and safe walls to retreat behind.

Most of us pay more than that in taxes, and we don't get shit back as a benefit.

Plus, to add insult to injury, we're forced to not only BUY our land, but to pay "rent" in the form of property taxes.

Seriously, add up all direct and indirect taxes you pay. Not just federal income tax.

Every single one of us not on welfare is paying more than 1/3 of our income, directly or indirectly, to a government (local, county, state, federal)

Look, let's be honest - no one in the world is going to pay crap for unskilled labor in the United States. If I need unskilled labor for something there is a line around the block of countries willing and able to provide a bottomless pit of unskilled people, willing to work for half the price with 1/10th the hassle.

Anything Obama does that makes average costs higher, say, increase the price of energy (which he has worked diligently to do), or increase wage prices (say through Obamacare) is going to depress employment and growth. You have to read you some Jules Verne. One of his lesser-known novels was entitled, IIRC, "Robur The Conqueror", although it may also have been released under a different title. Basically the same plot as "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea", but instead of a submarine, the mad genius had a flying machine, made out of compressed paper, and propelled by many small helicopter rotors* driven by electric motors, powered by some super-duper battery.

Robur kidnaps some members of a dirigible airship club based in Philadelphia, and takes them on a world tour, to demonstrate the superiority of heavier-than-air flight. The novel opens, incidentally, with "news reports" of inexplicable aerial trumpet playing from widely-scattered sites around the globe. The trumpet player turns out to be Robur's chief engineer.

Fun book, and quite prophetic, considering it was written well before heavier-than-air flying machines became practical. I wonder if the current bout of aerial trumpetry is not some prank, being carried out by nerds with airhorns carried aloft on quad-copters.

Story time!

I once had to call HP for an issue. My initial call was to Bangalore but I had a very lovely young lady with a very lovely accent who spoke English quite well who assured me that, not to worry, she was just to find out what type of problem I had and then I would be sent back to a US call center.

I got transferred to either somewhere in Texas or to someone from deep deep deep rural Texas. About ten minutes into that call, I nearly said "Yeah, put the chick from Bangalore back on."

Another problem with Chinese real estate, it sucks. We went over to Macau while I was there to visit the brand spanking new University of Macau. Enormous place, built to house 50,000 students and to replace the old campus which is a cramped spot in downtown Macau. It was also a bribe by the Chinese government to get Macau to play ball in a more friendly way.

Only problem is the place is a ghost town. Less than 5,000 total students and it is already falling apart because Chinese don't do maintenance.

The Chinese philosophy of build it and they will come doesn't seem to be working out all that well for them. Spanking new buildings, planned and built by the government regardless of market conditions, turns out not to be such a great idea.

With my current skillset, if I got the axe, I knew I was looking at, at best, starting over someplace else at like half of what I'm making now. I was beginning to plan for losing my job, cashing out my 401(k) and using the money to learn something more marketable, like HVAC repair or something.

Well, last week, my supervisor came to me and asked me if I'd like to take over the duties of another job that recently opened up, in addition to my current duties. "Yes, thank you! I would like that very much", was my response.

So, yay! My job is safe for now.

Clinton years: just leave it the hell alone and don't raise taxes. He pretty much does until some underage Chinese whore entices him. The shit begins as he grants China Permanent MFT.
Bush II years: Lotta shit going on so he barely notices 60,000 factories shutting down as a result of Clinton getting his dick wet with the underage Chinese whore.
Financial crisis and...
Obama years: No job growth. What is needed is China Permanent MFT with some different commie.

The problem with kids these days is that no one has ever told them that "fair" is an abstract concept.

So they run around complaining that it's not "fair" that some people are poor. Left unasked is the question, "How does one's personal choices effect their income?"

But I digress....

Fair is indeed an abstract concept.

For example, I think it's not "fair" that I'm not allowed to mow down jaywalkers in DC traffic.

Well, it's also how the word "fair" is used.

People will say "its not fair that John gets to sit around all day and play Candy Crush, while Joe and Josh build a skate ramp, and John gets to skate on it as often as Joe and Josh do."

People will also say, "it's not fair that Joe and Josh built a skate ramp, but won't let anyone else use it."

It's all in how its presented to people I guess.

But you can phrase things in a way to get most people to say "it's not fair that someone who doesnt work gets to live off welfare and live a lifestyle similar to those who do work".

But those same people will say "its not fair that someone has to starve to death just because they can't find a job"

There was nothing at all "accidental" about our Disappearing Manufacturing Sector. Every fucking bit of it was engineered from the start, specifically to hurt us.

Of course....even that it being done by drones now.

Uh... subsidize?

China financed it.

They're a communist country. The government (and party cronies) own controlling stakes in all major companies.

Which is neither here nor there but yeah, they're exactly a bastion of free markets (although, to be fair, neither are we. Or our European friends.)

That is the whole Social Justice thing in a nutshell. Thank you for putting it succinctly. It reminds me of a friend of mine in Jr High. Whenever he wanted to borrow his brother's very high horsepower car and his brother said no my friend would say, "Well, you're not using it right now!" and for a while his brother would beat him up but over time, with parents' intervention, when my friend would whine about it not being used his brother started loaning it to him. I think that is the same place today's yoots are getting this thing about, "Well, Jose and Adul are 19 and only make $10/hr washing dishes while the owner makes $100k a year. It's not fair! Pay them $25k/yr now!".

"Fair" is where justice is blind and the rule of law applies equally. If I rob a store, I get 10 years. If a Baltimore thug robs a store to protest someone he doesn't know dying in the back of a paddy wagon, he should also get 10 years. The last thing in the world that should happen is that the government create "safe spaces" to riot, loot, and destroy.

Well, the other attorney made one of the staff angry to day so when we were both in court, she trashed and TP'd his office. Thinking that wasn't good enough, she then cleaned and straightened up my office. (I'm a bit of a slob.) So I get a free office cleaning for simply not making her mad.

480 >>Just saw your comment on Macau interesting like a heart attack. Someone was telling me about their train travel from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and they said that it might have been the inspiration for the dystopia of Blade Runner.

Heh. I did a tour of China last fall, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. We did some of it by plane, the rest by train.

First off, not all of the train routes are straight lines. They have curves in China too. But the really striking thing is the vast differences between urban and rural China. Shanghai is a very modern city that would look at home anywhere in the developed world. But 10 miles outside the city limits and you step back in time. Same with all the above cities to varying degrees.

And the smog in Beijing has to be seen to be believed. Or not seen. On the worst day, visibility was no more than 50 feet and that is not an exaggeration. Couple that with people walking around with masks over their mouths and noses and some of the "food" being sold and yea, Blade Runner.

But the Great Wall really is all that. Simply amazing what a bunch of peasants who are being starved and beaten can produce. Which gave me an interesting business model for after the burning times.

But China overall gives you the impression of a fraud. Pretty pictures about an inch deep.

482 Well, after spending the last 8 hours trying to unfuck our supply chain, I've got an idea: allow companies to force employees to retire at 65!

Get rid of all the stupid age discrimination laws so companies can clear out all of the tenured farts who gum up the works. It would save on salary, vacation time, and health insurance costs, while there'd be more job openings for younger, more dynamic employees. We can send the baby boomers to their well-deserved euthan, er, retirement.

Posted by: NSA Commenter CRM114 at May 18, 2015 05:56 PM (hqZPQ)

483 And if we're going to spend trillions on Social Security and Medicare to support the less productive segment of the population while increasing the tax burden on the dwindling working segment of the population, then cancel all student loan debt. Treat it as a case of collective fraud perpetrated on unwary young people by sharpies in academia.

484 I am astonished this fool calls himself an economist. Perhaps I didn't read closely enough, but I could not find the word growth anywhere. Unleashing the energy sector would change the playing field overnight. Pipelines, nuclear power, and drilling everywhere could produce enough wealth to bring back manufacturing and even take some from low cost producers right now. Repealing Obamacare and stifling regulations would produce a surge in growth we have not seen in 8 years. Millineals could see the greatest expansion in their lifetimes and we could see, once again, that a rising tide lifts all the boats!
