Former Stephanopoulos Colleague Carole Simpson: Stephanopoulos Isn't Really a Journalist

On CNN's Reliable Sources media criticism program, Stephanopoulos’s former ABC News colleague, Carole Simpson, unloaded on the former top aide to Bill and Hillary Clinton that she said she likes and respects.
"There is a coziness that George cannot escape," said Simpson, who toiled for two decades at ABC News, notably as the weekend anchor of World News Tonight from 1988 to 2003. "Qhile he did try to separate himself from his political background to become a journalist, he really isn't a journalist."

"I wanted to just take him by the neck and say, 'George, what were you thinking?' Clearly, he was not thinking. I thought it was outrageous," Simpson said. "And I am sorry that again the public trust in the media is being challenged and frayed because of the actions of some of the top people in the business."

She goes on to note ABC's dilemma, which is the same as NBC's dilemma with Brian Williams: What do you do when the guy you've made the face of your organization turns out to be a liar?

I've said it before... the GOP should agree to let the debates be moderated by the MSM on the condition that Rush Limbaugh gets to moderate the Dem primary debates.

If that condition is not met (which it obviously wont be) then cut the MSM out of the process completely.

I don't get why they're involved at all. Hire someone to keep time, hire a panel of conservatives to crowd source some "broad" questions, then let the candidates go with it. Stream it online. Invite CSPAN for the old folks who don't use the internet.

No reason for CNN or MSNBC or Fox News or ABC/CBS/NBC to be involved at all. We're just giving them free ratings and letting them do 90 minutes of opp research and trying to set up soundbites for Democrat attack ads.

What does it mean, really, to be a "journalist"? It is not a profession, there is no true required learning, experience, or wisdom.

Main stream media uses this idea of "journalist" as some towering, educated, intelligent, ethical, non-partisan, objective person who "just gives you the facts". When in reality, all a "journalist" is is someone who takes information they received and report it to someone else. They are not particularly learned or ethical and certainly are never truly non-partisan and objective.

We have allowed the left to create a "profession" of journalism whereby the mushy middle believes journalists are bound by some kind of ethics (they are not) and are unbiased and objective in their reporting (again, they are not).

Rather than agree that Stephanapolis is "not" a journalist, we should point out that he is in fact the very epitome of what a journalist truly is - just some person with their own agenda reporting things to others. And we should always take such reporting with a grain of salt knowing the person doing the reporting is biased, has an agenda, probably doesn't understand what they are reporting, etc.

If we join in the argument that Stephanapolis is "not a journalist" we are buying into the left's narrative that "journalists" are some noble professionals, when nothing could be farther from the truth.

Journalists are by and large advocates for a position. That's it. They report what they want to report, they get quotes from who they want to get quotes from, they color what they report a certain way, they hide facts that don't fit the story they want to tell. Every journalist is an advocate. There is no such thing as being truly objective. Sure, there are things a reporter will cover that they don't feel passionate about, so their reporting won't be quite as biased as other stuff they do, but it will still be biased by their worldview, their preferences, etc.
