Overnight Open Thread (5-14-2015) - DO NOT BE FOOLED BY FALSE ONTS Edition

Quote of the Day I

You know what it's called when kids make mistakes without adult supervision and have to wrestle with the resulting consequences? Growing up.

-- Mark Hemingway

Quote of the Day II

I keep hearing about a supposed "hate speech" exception to the First Amendment, or statements such as, "This isn't free speech, it's hate speech," or "When does free speech stop and hate speech begin?" But there is no hate speech exception to the First Amendment.

Hateful ideas (whatever exactly that might mean) are just as protected under the First Amendment as other ideas. ...To be sure, there are some kinds of speech that are unprotected by the First Amendment. But those narrow exceptions have nothing to do with "hate speech" in any conventionally used sense of the term.

-- Eugene Volokh

Quote of the Day III

My life would have gone along perfectly well, politically speaking, if it hadn't been for girls.

-- P.J. O'Rourke

Quote of the Day IV

Jester: That was some of the best flying I've seen to date - right up to the part where you got killed.

The Lebowksi Bar in Reykjavik

So I noticed this in a tour guide and being a Dude in good standing of course I had to check it out. The food was classic bar fare but the bar really did the whole Lebowski theme very well - nearly everything in the place had a relevant movie tie-in; even the bathroom mirrors were all Time Man of the Year editions. And yes the rug really tied the whole bar together.

And of course I also had to have a White Russian and so I discovered that a) they're pretty damn good (something I'd forgotten since my college days) and that b) having a White Russian (or two) at noon really makes the rest of the afternoon all comfortably relaxing and pleasant.

Now ordinarily this would have been the perfect time to visit the Phallus Museum but I was in search of more important things: quasi-authentic viking weaponry, some Icelandic wool yarn, and a Scandi toe (for the collection). Plus the museum was four blocks away with an admission charge of $10 and four blocks seemed awfully far to walk just to see a bunch of dried up weenies and wangs. On the other hand they did have a gift shop so maybe I chose poorly...

The Cheatriots Strike Back

And issue a rebuttal to the NFL Wells report that actually makes some very good points. The actual evidence of routine under-inflation is very weak to non-existent when all game circumstances are taken into account so in fact there may have been no misbehavior on the part of the Patriots at all. On the other hand Tom Brady totally acted like a guilty man during the investigation.

RSM: Men Cannot Be Feminists

Also see if you can spot the four gaping logic holes in Berlatsky's rant against a male feminist.

1955: Rosa Parks Refuses to Sit at the Back of the Bus, 2015: Women Told to Sit at the Back of a University of Western Sydney Lecture

How the IRS Tried to Steal $107,000 from a Convenience Store Owner

He made several deposits under $10,000 which they thought was suspicious. So they seized the money in all his bank accounts. But they never filed any criminal charges nor would they return the money. Eventually they offered to give him half his money back and threatened him if he ever spoke about his case in public. He sued and the IRS finally caved and gave him all his money back.

Fired B.C. Teacher Sues After Student's False Rape Accusations

The longtime teacher with a spotless record fought for his job. Ultimately, an arbitration hearing uncovered that all of the student's claims were lifted from the TV show "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." The girl testified that she had watched every episode of the drama at least three times, and some as many as 10 times.

Posted by: HR drinking at May 15, 2015 12:01 AM (rHXGG)

211 This is probably as good a time and place as any for my Mad Max fan theory.

I like to think of the movies as having been based on books written about 4,000 years after the events they portray. Schliemannesque futuristic archaeologists make some discoveries that imply that there is some historical reality to the ancient folk tales of Mad Max. Someone writes a book speculating about how the actual events might have occurred, it's a big success, and they make it into a movie, which is what we're somehow watching when we watch The Road Warrior.

The success of the book and movie in the future lead someone to throw together another Mad Max movie before the fad wears off. But most of the best, most plausible and internally consistent parts of the Mad Max stories were used up in the first book and movie. So they kind of cobble something together out of a few weird parts that didn't fit into the first one, kind of like the part at the end of the Epic of Gilgamesh where all the sudden he's over it and he's in the underworld trying to rescue Enkidu, or the dragon part in Beowulf. Also, they pad the story out by conflating the Max character with a couple of other heroes from stories set roughly around the same period, give or take 500 years; Captain Jack, and the Raggedy Man. So that's why Beyond Thunder Dome is kind of a mess generally and makes no sense in terms of chronology particularly. It's like those Hercules movies where he's fighting Nero or something because he's actually Maciste, or where they just kind of mash Odysseus, Bellerophon, and Perseus together and call him Hercules.

Then some Roger Corman type guy decides to complete the trilogy by the "in a roar of engines, he lost everything" line from the Road Warrior opening narration into this generic, guys family gets massacred and he avenges them story, which is crap, and I hate that bald guy that just starts going "PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE IN HEROES ANYMORE MAX!" YOU WEREN'T EVEN HAVING A CONVERSATION ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT PEOPLE BELIEVE IN HEROES OR NOT, ASSHOLE, YOU WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT CARS OR SOMETHING BEFORE THAT. IF THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE THEME OF THE MOVIE OR SOMETHING YOU CAN'T JUST HAVE SOME GUY YELL IT OUT OUT OF NOWHERE.

The other thing that I'd like to mention is my blog.

I recall if you bought the chick bangers you didn't need the rohypnol. The original mix wasn't what we got back then. It was 3 shots vodka and 3 shot galliano in orange.

Jim, no Wallbangers @ Midway and Rosecrans. All corners commercial - drugstore, big corner mall with grocery store, etc. - one corner might have a strip joint, not positive. But I get my haircuts on the NE corner, small strip mall, excellent fast V'mese hair cutting gal, cheap (also one of the best pho places in town, which is saying something, a short walk away).

You may recall the strip joint (think it was called The Body Shop back then?) just a bit further up Rosecrans right before the I-8. That's still there.

From that era, or a bit later (80s) I recall Diego's in Pacific Beach. Wow. Still a restaurant of some kind. And Garnet Ave. has become the bar district for 20-somethings, which is starting to cause frictions.

But everybody lucky enough to have grown up around here back then knows that the best show in town was to go watch fall class registration at SD State. Used to be outside, in the quad of the old student center. Late August. Coeds w/ summer tans in clothes for the weather (80s, dry).

Oscar. Mike. Golf.

An annual ritual for hormone-crazed youth. State is still pretty amazing on the scenery side. Always has been. And now, it's not just the CA babe-i-tude. Ongoing research at the nice new pool complex (yes, I actually swim laps) indicates that the Nordic countries and China are now adding hotties to the mix.

A properly made sidecar -- only two needed.

How about a French 75? Named for a French artillery howitzer in WWI, and quite an accurate name it is. Champagne and brandy. That one has enough sugar and bubbles in it to give one a splitting hangover for a week.

Another favorite is a Rusty Nail, also seemingly lost in time. Drambuie will put you on your ass. Adding scotch is lethal.

But I did have a few Harvey Wallbangers in my day. Liked the Galliano.

In Dubuque, Iowa, that.

But, I digress.

The Body Shop is still in business? Wow! That place has been on the Morality PooLeesee radar for decades! I just hope they don't have the same employees they had back in '76.

Okay, here's a couple three vintage San Diego questions. Are these places still around?

Barnacle Bill's. at Marina Cortez, Harbor Island.

Tom Ham's Lighthouse (fine dining) Harbor Island.

the Bali Hai. The absolute, definitive expression of Polynesian design and décor, and even some dining. Shelter Island.

And an aside to the Bali Hai. They used to have a first class bandstand on the grass by the bay.

I used to set anchor about 50 yards offshore, and enjoy some very expensive concerts, for free.

378 I already discussed it in an earlier thread, but last summer I bought a 2014 Mazda 5. It's a miniminivan, which seats 6. Alas, the 2015 model is automatic only, so it looks like I got one of the last sticks.

I like it so far. It has very nimble handling. Not much acceleration, but I didn't buy it for drag racing. I got 31 mpg on the only highway trip I've taken.

Jim -

Barnacle Bill's - dunno. Friend used to have his wonderful cruising catamaran at the marina right behind the Sheraton. Will check next time I'm on Harbor Isl.

Tom Ham's Lighthouse - still there, same name. Has long had reputation of amazing location/therefore lousy food, I'm afraid - though this is hearsay, haven't been there in decades. Great spot for outdoor weddings though.

Bali Hai - still there, got bought and renovated a few years ago - including replacing their dock, which was about to collapse under the next person to step on it. Hear it's fairly nice. Went to an older friend's 50th anniversary party there, downstairs, so didn't eat there, exactly.

Perhaps before your time, but Tom HOM's - located right where today's Fish Market restaurant is, next to the USS Midway museum, was my favorite as a kid. The food? Nah. Front-row seat for watching the Navy seaplanes land and take off - their "runway" was marked with buoys about 300 yards away from the restaurant.

Been since '95 that I was last in S.D.

Everything I write thereof, is from memory. But damn, I'm glad to get those updates from you in real time.

And yep. Back when, I got to frequently see the Convair Sea Dart, as it aged and weathered next to the hangar on Harbor Island, through the '60s and early '70s. It's now at the flight museum at Balboa Park.

Random data point. I used to bicycle from Kearny Mesa to the Coast Guard station at Ballast Point, to see the (then) love of my life, there.

We were in the 8th grade. By time I graduated high school, I could damn near bicycle up a vertical wall, I had built up my legs that much. I looked like an upside down Popeye.

Just FYI. Madison H.S., Class of '76.

coworker of mine back when i worked as a carpenter in college used to use his subaru (old outback? i think) to move materials from time to time.

could get sheets of plywood on the roof, and with the seats folded down there's actually a decent amount of room inside for materials.

also, the car was big enough to fit 8 ft 2 x's inside, which was nice.

would not recommend doing that to a car that was not a beater though.

I'm the exact opposite. I never throw anything away, because I'm convinced that I might need it someday. Which is ridiculous, and is practically never the case. At this rate, I'll have to buy another house just to hold the clutter.

It probably comes from having parents who grew up in the Depression. They were both pack rats, and I inherited that tendency. They've been dead for years, and I still haven't thrown out some of their shit.

457 1955: Rosa Parks Refuses to Sit at the Back of the Bus, 2015: Women Told to Sit at the Back of a University of Western Sydney Lecture

Before you read the story just ask yourself what force in the world is allowed to discriminate, abuse, and even kill without a peep from the usual watchdog groups. Okay now you know the story.

Not to be a know-it-all spoilsport or anything -- and I do love Tim Blair, the Australian columnist who wrote that report -- but this whole thing about Muslim women being segregated at Muslim events on college campuses has been going on for decades here in the US -- without the slightest peep from anyone, ever.

I remember reading a hair-raising article about a Muslim Students Association meeting at some UC campus back in, like, 2002 or something, and it clearly described the "Sisters" and "Brothers" entrances, and the gender segregated seating, etc. That was 13 years ago at a public university, and I'm certain it has continued to happen every day since then.

Feminists are not feminists: they are "useful idiots" for the communist ideologues who took over academia long ago. They only exist to criticize capitalism and its associated ideologies (democracy, individualism, etc.). Anything else is given a pass -- even if that thing oppresses women more than capitalism.

Do I hate everyone? Yes, pretty much, at this point. Every ideologue of every flavor of leftism sickens me.

I can carry 8' dimensional lumber internally in my wagon -- and have on many occasions. When we lost our loquat tree, I designed and built a shade structure to hold sunblock material for our orchids and ferns.....in two places it required a 21-foot span -- so I constructed 21' I-beams out of 8' lengths of 2x4.

Pretty simple, really. Alberta's provincial government for the last 40 years has been the Progressive Conservative Party. Basically a centrist party, kind of like the GOP. Fairly astute fiscally to begin with. But they just got complacent, and a little corrupt. Upstart new small-C conservative party arose, called Wildrose Party, began eating into PC's core support. PC's had leadership review, turfed out corrupt leader, one Alison Redford, a U.N./Agenda 21 statist, in favor of Jim Prentice, formerly of the federal Conservative Cabinet.

Prentice talks leader of Wildrose into defecting to PC party along with many of her supporting MLA's (members of the legislative assembly), because "Prentice has vowed fiscal conservatism which is the goal of Wildrose." That pissed off a lot of Wildrose supporters, myself included. The Prentice brings in a big-spending budget, with increased taxes, in a year of record low oil revenues, due to the oil price crash, and like a damned fool, calls a snap election on it, although Alberta has fixed election dates by law, and one wasn't due for a year yet.

Wildrose won nearly every rural seat, mine included, under a new leader. NDP (the Commies) won all the ridings in Edmonton (their home turf, being union/labor stooges), by large margin, and won enough seats in Calgary and Lethbridge due to vote-splitting between PC's and Wildrose to form a majority government, with less than half the popular vote. Clearly the voters meant whack Prentice's pee-pee, but I don't think that most of them wanted a Dipper majority.

Well, it's a Provincial issue. Nothing to do with the Federal Government. We do have a Federal election upcoming, but I don't think this will translate into gains for the Federal Dippers (NDP, which stands for New Democratic Party, who are socialists by their own lights, although some are outright Commies).

Trailer Park Boys is a Nova Scotia thing. I've never watched an entire episode. Of course, I haven't had a TV since before they came out, either.

Posted by: rickl at May 15, 2015 02:20 AM (sdi6R)

Yeah. Kind of an oxymoron, ain't it? The Federal Progressive Conservative Party merged with the Reform Party in the late 1980's, and the merged entity took the name Conservative Party of Canada. Many of the old "Red Tories" were purged or retired at that time. Reform Party was founded here in Alberta, and was a lot like Tea Party in some respects. As is Wildrose, now. Some of the same people, too.

The Conservative Party of Canada has made great strides at cleaning up some of the messes left by the former governing Liberals. They aren't quite as "conservative" as I'd like them to be on all issues, but they are a hell of a lot better than any of the alternatives. And they support the military, and they stand behind Israel. Which Obama doesn't, unless it's to fuck them in the ass.

516 Don't know. Had a security breach on my email based on Amazon being dumbasses recently and one of the things I get in my email is the AoS digest from the usergroup....which, BTW, I never read. So I've half-expected the guy to show up here to gloat. He's evidently a smooth-talker -- got Amazon to spill their guts and send me a bunch of "Am I the bestest customer service rep you've ever tongue-washed?" emails, and also got my ex-boss to think, "wait, he wasn't as big an asshole as I remember" and invite me to coffee after an IM chat.

But he also threatened the fiancee in a way that has been reported to law enforcement and sent me an insulting text message from my own account when he'd commandeered it. So, Tourettes is probably a good diagnosis.

And this guy might be him.

And I know that someone did that and screwed with my email account 'cause I gotz the docs and the timeline.

561 Suicide?
The lead investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board says the Amtrak train sped up for a full minute before it derailed at a sharp curve.
Board member Robert Sumwalt says a camera mounted on the front of the train shows it was going 70 mph 65 seconds before the video went dark.
By 16 seconds before the crash, the train had increased to 100 mph, soon reaching 106 mph right before entering a 50 mph section.
Investigators are still unsure why the train was speeding up.
Sumwalt says inspection records show no anomalies with the track, signals or train itself. It had left Philadelphia's 30th Street Station on time.
He says engineer Brandon Bostian has agreed to speak to NTSB investigators in the next few days

566 repukes have been in the "I want my piece of the Pie" mode since 2001.

Just took awhile for People to figure that out. DHS as a bad idea under klintoon suddenly becomes a good idea under Bush.

When some TSA agent feels up your package next time you fly you have the repukes to thank for it.

Sweetheart, I know because the amazon guys told me so, that they regularly discuss cc info with peeps based on shitty authentication. One guy even said that he'd gone to his management and asked, "really?!?!?!?" but was told that was SOP.

And I know that someone did that and screwed with my email account 'cause I gotz the docs and the timeline.

I've set in motion some processes that will tell me more over time.

If you've got something to tell me, Moron to Moron, you have my email address. And, believe it or not, I'm probably easier to deal with than the Feds.
