Leftism is Just Religion for the Godless, Continued

If you've read Marx, and I've read him slightly, you'll notice that his ranting sounds a lot like an angry, bitter failure ranting at God, but, being an atheist, he can't rant at God.

So instead he rants at something he calls Society (specifically, German society), a being with all the supernatural power that one usually attributes to God, that is, the power to decide one's fate, to reward one with heaven, or to punish one with hell.

Two great articles today on this.

First, from Mollie Ziegler Hemingway (she writes out her middle name today): The Left's Theodicy of the Federal Government.

Whenever and wherever evil occurs in the world, questions of “theodicy” arise among some religious adherents. Theodicy attempts to defend God's goodness and omnipotence in light of the existence of evil. Why do bad things happen to good people, the question goes. (To which a Lutheran might reply, "Trick question! There are no good people!") There are various schools of thought and debate, rekindled with every hurricane, tsunami, earthquake, act of terror and mass shooting.

...

But what if journalists --some of whom just yesterday were admitting they know "close to zero" Christians-- don't have a religious or even non-political vocabulary for use in such tragedies? Perhaps we politicize everything in part because we have lost any understanding of the world as fallen and out of our control...

So instead of contemplating how fleeting and out of our control life can be, we instead begin with the question, "Why do bad things happen to good administrations?" ("Trick question!" the conservative or libertarian might respond. "There are no good administrations!") The theodicy of federal government requires an explanation that defends the goodness of government control or subsidies into the given sphere. So just as some religious groups might blame a weather event on insufficient fealty to the relevant god, some progressives blame -- before the National Transportation Safety Board has even shown up on site to investigate the cause of a crash -- insufficient fealty, sacrifice and offerings to the relevant god of federal government.

And via Instapundit, Daniel Hannan discusses the failure of the left's Church Lady approach to public policy.

The Left's error was its usual one: to assume a moral superiority, to treat conservatism as a kind of mental disorder, to define the campaign as a test of voters’ “compassion”. As Ed Miliband kept putting it, "This election is about values”. Labour’s core vote lapped it up: plenty of Leftists define their ideology by whom they loathe. But others found it off-putting. In a column shortly before polling day, the actor Tom Conti explained why he had switched sides. "Labour, I realised, was built on hatred".

...

Re: the "Shy Tory" syndrome, wherein conservative leaning voters don't express their real views to pollsters, because of the massive public relations smear against them:

But they don't just feel intimidated; they feel insulted. When Leftists attack the Tories, they’re not just having a go at 300 MPs, or 100,000 party members: they're scorning everyone who has contemplated supporting the party...

When you adopt a bullying tone, you find that 1) voters don’t like it; 2) you solidify the other side’s core support; and 3) some people hide their voting intentions.

I've long called these people Religious Maniacs because, of course, they are. I always point out that you don't need a god to be religious maniac; you just need a dogma and a Devil.

A friend of mine once said that, a long time ago: That the only thing a religion really needed was a Devil to hate.

I don't know if he came up with that himself, or got it from Eric Hoffer or something. Actually, my friends got most of their witticisms from Amazon Women on the Moon. Maybe he got it from there.

I remember years ago when the Sandinistas first allowed free elections in Nicaragua, all the polls were predicting a huge margin of victory for the ruling regine, and the international left was jizzing all over itself in anticipation. Then the elections were actually held and... the Sandies were routed pretty much everywhere.

You can see why, though. After nearly 20 years in a totalitarian prison camp of a country, no Nicaraguan is going to voice an honest opinion if it goes against the wishes of his jailers.

And the butthurt of the left was extreme, and their tears were sweet.

36 the most amazing thing to me about "liberals" (not the pols or the "thought leaders", but the voters supporters in the general population) is how they'll go from supporting Obama and Hillary in '08 until '12 being against gay marriage to turning on a dime and not only full-on supporting gay marriage and "acceptance" for trannies, but to saying that the positions they held as of 4 years ago are now racist, sexist, bigoted and only closed minded xenophobic haters could possibly feel that way.

I feel like that must have been what it was like when the Democrat party went from supporting jim crow to calling Republicans "racist."

67 A few people are leaders, a few people are loners, a lot of people are joiners.

Many people treat their tribe, their party, their sports team, or their faith pretty much all the same.

The thing about Marxism/atheism (not the same but related in this way) is that they affirmatively deny faith in the process of otherwise duplicating it.

That does kind of explain why we make huge lists of contradictions for the left - one of their founding principles is a contradiction, so accepting contradictions is necessary.

Not that contradictions are unique to the left, but the scale of them can be impressive. Multiculturalism vs the relative treatment of religions and cultures (Christianity and the West), SCIENCE! vs the actual scientific process (see "Post-Normal Science"), ad nauseam.

A lot of people who go to church can't really explain their faith in detail, but they know the basics and the slogans, just like political arguments on Twitter.

Mostly outside of here.

It's not my job to try to convert anyone: that's left up to the individual, IMHO. However, my journey began with the acknowledgement of absolutes. There are many such things, and just seeing them opened a big door for me. Consistency is good. Chaos, not so much.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 13, 2015 07:30 PM (1sJza)

Chesterton was absolutely right, and a related quote I've seen in some places is that once you banish religion, you don't believe in nothing, you become capable of believing anything.

As Ace noted in a great post a long time ago, the psychiatric pioneer Jung did a lot of work regarding magical thinking, and found that it was ubiquitous - everyone did it, regardless of culture, around the world. The only difference was that organized religion built a box around it, and defined places where it was allowed and places where it wasn't. Once you limit the magical thinking, you enable rational thinking to a certain in everything outside the box. By doing away with the limit on magical thinking, the Left has essentially rendered itself incapable of rational thinking. They now live in a demon-haunted world where everything that goes wrong is caused by sorcerers and witches.

His defense was that he didn't realize he was going so fast (yeah, sure) and then panicked when he remembered the upcoming turn and tried to brake.

I imagine it could be something similar here. Guy was going fast fast fast, like always, and somehow forgot that pesky turn until it was too late.

105 @79 That can only be on aesthetic grounds.
I have proved this in my paper [not available online].
Aesthetic grounds are formally equivalent to inductive arguments when there is insufficient evidence to support the truth of the premises.
Formally, this is the model rational people follow in everyday life. It is the form that has allowed or produced the survival of tool-using rational bipeds.
We do not not any longer need to run down prey. (We have Border Collies, for example. Fishing lines.)
Ultimately, and you can take this to the bank, or leave it to your heirs, truths depend on truths outside your fragestellung.

Posted by: mynewhandle at May 13, 2015 07:31 PM (AkOaV)

Not stupid, actually. Dumb. There's a difference, and not just in quantity of IQ points.

Ultimately, everybody's dumb. Smart people are dumb, stupid people are dumb, tall people, short people, skinny people, fat people, and on and on.

Stupid is like can't do math or learn to read or put the square peg in the square hole consistently.

Dumb is falls for a convincing line, forgets to do their homework when they're in a hurry, lets a pushy jerk have their way because they're tired of arguing, and so on.

Everybody's dumb, sometimes. Usually it's the "get tired" or "don't do your homework" variety, so people vote for who their family or friends vote for, or yell team slogans when they don't really know or care about the team, or go to church because their family goes to church and doesn't really think about it otherwise.

Sometimes, when it's like "what fast food are we having," dumb isn't even that bad.

Sometimes it's horrifying, as in "hey that ISIS recruiting drive is pretty convincing, they sound like they're getting their act together."

I suspect in the latter case even the "dumb" ones have a significant amount of bloodlust in the equation.

Zombie Cats From Mars

The story centers on Billy, an effeminate fan of vintage science fiction action thrillers. His only friend is Cameron, a nerdy film buff who tries to boost his confidence whenever he can. After seeing a UFO land, Billy retreats into his head, imagining that aliens are taking over the town. Cameron is skeptical, as is the rest of the town. Meanwhile, people are starting to die. First, the reclusive cat lady, Percis, is discovered mutilated by Lester, the churchgoing husband of Carolyn, Percis's depressed caretaker. Random deaths soon follow, first a jogger, and then a janitor at the Carbonics Warehouse. A pair of news reporters share this information with the public while the Detective and his Chief try to solve the killings. Meanwhile, the killings continue. Billy, wrapped up in a world of fiction, discovers a story in which Martian Cats land on Earth and inflict horror upon the town. Confident that the killings are the result of the UFO delivering alien cats, he sets off on his own superhero mission to save the town.

If I was going to make a Qur'anic argument for the destruction of Israel, I'd make it from sura 17. This is basically a big homily from Deuteronomy and the Ten Commandments. Deuteronomy, as some of our morons will know, makes the argument to Israel that God can and will yank the Holy Land from under it, if Israel defies God.

I don't happen to think that Israeli Jews *are* defying God, but obviously Muslims differ on that.

169 There is no cognitive dissonance for those who are true believers

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at May 13, 2015 07:40 PM (GDulk)

Well, it might be more accurate to say cognitive dissonance just doesn't register as what it is - it's a sensation, of sorts, it just means something else. Sometimes we jokingly refer to it as "nuance," self-superiority similar to the ability to rapidly stack cups or belch more than 8 letters in a row, except based on being able to hold contradictory ideas in rapid succession.

This pairs into the purported love of novelty of the left. Almost more of new conflict, at least among "progressives," who define themselves as against things. Lots of new things, as it seems, there's always a new crusade to get people fired up.

175 Cato the Rebel Without a Party: "And that's how evil wins. Because people get coerced into it as the path of least resistance."

Which explains Cass Sunstein's Nudge. The most effective coercion is not to bludgeon because that incites innate, immediate resistance. No, the idea is to induce through a rewards system to "nudge" you into positions and let you "come to your own conclusion" based on risk/penalty/reward.

If you control the reigns of the reward, you can insert a more powerful control mechanism by molding behavior to your own advantage by coercing others to think they came up with the idea of subservience on their own and of free will.

IOW brainwashing through rewards. The boiled frog doesn't even know it's also being fattened up for slaughter.

Hah. We had a dealership in Houston; in the late 1980s I saw a lot of them in the garage at the Galleria. (Of course DeLorean owners will be mall rats.)

Then I guess they ran out of willing buyers (and cocaine), so Houston became the hub for spare DeLorean parts from around the country. If your DeLorean broke down, which it will, Houston's where you sent off to get a replacement part.

Nailed it. When you collectivize responsibility, it's always somebody else's job as much as it is your own. You therefore get to ignore that tiny sliver of your own responsibility and harrangue everyone else for ignoring their own tiny sliver. "Won't somebody help?", the whole crowd brays as an easily preventable tragedy unfolds unchallenged.

When you are responsible, you take action and prevent the tragedy yourself.

Yeah, me too.

That's a rather modern explanation, but there's a common theme that I noticed in the NT of a spiritual marriage between the believer and God. A fusion, if you will, much as a man and wife might experience where two people become one.

Spiritual Secks (and yeah, you can stand aside, I'll take this thunderbolt myself). A blending of spirits wherein the immature spirit (that'd be me) seeks to join with the ageless, timeless Spirit of The Big Guy, who knows pretty much everything, since He made it all to begin with.

I should probably shut up now.

The worship of the State is the natural result of the abandonment of the God of onto-theology.

Come to think of it, Albert Jay Nock (in Our Enemy the State) makes a similar point in discussing Hegel, Mussolini and Hitler; he just doesn't develop it as much as Nietzsche does.

I know from my own experience that you can screw up, and that 'some people' are just screwed up. So I won't be surprised, much, by what comes next. But it sure sounds like they're going to pin it on the driver.

From Jimmy Akin, musing on St. Paul:

"In the glorified state we will be able to love each other more purely, more intensely than we ever could in this life--and without distraction or weakness or contrary temptation. We won't be our irritable, flawed, exasperating, selves. We will be both more loving and more lovable.

And so we should not face the prospect of the next world as a lie without love but as a life with more and more intense and more pure love than we have ever known in this world.

It is to be a live without sex, and this confuses us as in this life the sexual act seems incredibly powerful, but we must recognize that the sexual act offers only a glimmer of the love and intimacy of heaven. It is not heaven itself. Heaven is the real good toward which sex--and all earthly goods--point."

Based on info from both St. Paul and from C.S. Lewis, both of whom I believe to be very good theologians.

256 Absolutely, the Left treats this like religion -- with faith -- belief absent proof.

Unfortunately, while religion REQUIRES faith, science and economics and the like ... doesn't. Worse, while one needs faith for religion because there IS no proof, there is proof ... that everything the Leftists believe is wrong.

So while they insist they are the party of science, they treat science like religion (which makes the Al Gore climate scam the modern-day equivalent to Middle Ages Indulgences) while mocking the religions of the Right (see Christianity and Judaism).

My sister transformed, over the years, from a freewheelin' punk rocker with a wicked sense of humor into a shrill, bitter vegan Euro-lefty for whom every blandly remark is a trigger that will magically turn her into a burning pillar of rage. 314 well the article said the idea was to "end the boom and bust cycle" (I thought Keynes already did that!) by giving government complete control of our money (as if they already dont control our money) and allowing them to manipulate interest rates to stop the natural business cycle from happening.

One of my favorite scenes from Cambridge Five between Anthony Blount and the Queen Mother:

You didn't answer my question about vices. You rather swerved it.
Um I used to be quite keen on Marx.
- Groucho?
- The other one.
- Harpo, the deaf one?
- Karl, the bearded one.
- Boils.
- Lots, apparently.
On his married quarters.
No, on his bottom.
Another country altogether.
So You're a homosexualist, a lapsed Marxist And I'm related to you.
You and me, Anthony.
Two queens in a pod.

Well, Conan the Barbarian was a slave and got those muscles turning the wheel. And it is the muscles that made him such a powerful fighter.

Perhaps as a sex slave she got a lot of muscles doing the horizontal mambo. And if she did it in a whole lot of acrobatic positions, the applications to Conan like gladiatorial skills are obvious.

I don't brake a car during turns because having the wheels stop while you're going 60 mph does not mean you lose momentum. Yes the friction is required to turn, but if you brake while you're turning (especially, in say, snow, where you don't have much friction anyways) your momentum stays the same, but your wheels lock up and you're likely to spin out or flip.

I don't know. Like I said, not a physic geek.

But you don't just bleed that momentum just like that, especially when a train (or car, or bicycle, or anything with brakes) is leaning in to a turn.

406 The Germans might have picked someone worse, but I can't imagine anyone worse (n Germany) than Hitler and his hellish henchmen.

Mr/Ms/Mrs Fenelon ...

... seems to me that Hitler was just the bastard they picked, out of a long line of bastard candidates. Bastards like him popped up in large quantities in Russia, Japan, Italy, and numerous other countries. They weren't identified as Bastards at the time. Mussolini was particularly popular here. Fascism was considered a valid political movement here.

My point being ... I think the mood was right for countries to pick numerous people like that. If anything ... Hitler was less competent than some of the other options. Imagine an Albert Speer in charge of Germany.

Back in the day Norman Spinrad wrote a very strange book titled "The Iron Dream". In the preface it says that the author of the book is Adolf Hitler who after serving in the German army during the Great War, dabbled briefly in radical politics before he emigrated to the United States where, unlike Europe, he had an opportunity to make a living as an artist doing covers for pulp science fiction magazines during the science fiction "Golden Age".

The Nazi Party attracted malcontents who blamed all of Germany's problems on being "stabbed in the back" by Jews. We will never know if they would have found an equally charismatic leader if Hitler hadn't been around - but certainly, he did not create that ideology - or the hate and resentment Nazism tapped in to.

499 FenelonSpoke, they are firmly wedded to an incorrect narrative. Where Galileo strayed was when he tried to argue Church theology. But that is lost in the noise of their animus towards the Catholic Church.

Much like Julius Caeser accidentally burning the Library at Alexandria and the Muslims deliberately doing the same thing. All we hear about is Hypatia and how the Christians burned the library down.

There is a great book called 'when money dies' and the author periodically just gives lists of prices as they get higher and higher...scary stuff. They also made it illegal to use currency from out of the county at some point.

They talk about how people were basically reduced to bartering things because money had no value, wallpapering with money, carting literal wheelbarrows worth of cash around to try to buy something. Absolutely insane. Everyone should read this book.

The hyperinflation was mostly in 1923 and they had issued new currency by 1929. One of the consequences of the hyperinflation was that the German people associated it as one of the failings of democracy. They had never had that sort of thing happen during the imperial period. A lot of the problems caused by the Versailles Treaty were also ascribed to problems of democracy. That is one reason why people were amenable to the National Socialists argument that a strong Leader is a better idea than democracy.

My concern is not Galileo however, but what the present misguided fool who sadly occupies the See of Peter is doing to the Church. The Church has had bad Popes before. 564 Well, if your Pope, priest, pastor is not perfect. None of them-us-is. :^)

And this is what I gave out ton folks who were in our prayer vigil for the Confirmands on Sunday, It works just as well for leaders in the church:

Some ways to pray for other Christians:

1, ) Ask God to help them know what He wants them to do. (Col 1:5)

2. Ask God to give them deep spiritual understanding (Col1:9)

3, Ask God to give them more knowledge of himself (Col 1;10)

4. As God to give them wisdom and spiritual power (Eph 1:18-20)

And as I have said to some people in the church, "I won't be here forever. This will make some people very happy and some rather sad. :^) Same is true of the Pope.

573 @382 I have to wonder if killing Nicholas II when he was a boy would have led to any better outcomes for Russia and the West.
------------------

My very basic understanding is that Nicholas II's primary issue was the people he was surrounded by in court - and not all of his own choosing. Rasputin, for instance, was there at the behest of Nicholas's wife. He wasn't a great tsar, but he also wasn't a terrible one. He was purely mediocre at a very bad time.

And if Kerensky's replacement government hadn't attempted to continue the war against the Central Powers, then Lenin might not have gotten the support that he needed.

575 I call it the Superhero theory of government: leftists think of the government as like a comic-book superhero. Government protects the weak from the strong, always has pure motives, always can be counted on to do the right thing, and if government ever screws up, it isn't because the government is bad - because superheroes can never be bad, they are superheroes after all - but it is because someone else (i.e., Republicans) failed the government.

579 call it the Superhero theory of government: leftists think of the government as like a comic-book superhero. Government protects the weak from the strong, always has pure motives, always can be counted on to do the right thing, and if government ever screws up, it isn't because the government is bad - because superheroes can never be bad, they are superheroes after all - but it is because someone else (i.e., Republicans) failed the government.

That sounds like a plot worth pursuing. A super hero who behaves like a leftist - intruding where he's not invited, causing more harm than good.

Since we are talking alien invasions. David Gerrold wrote a series of books that are collected under the series title: War Against the Chtorr, Basically the aliens use bio-weapons to wipe out many humans and then start seeding the planet with their biosphere. In the first book, the US government is trying to keep it under wraps that there is an alien invasion as they fight the first wave of the alien bio-invasion. By the last written book, still not seen the real aliens even as their life forms aggressively conquer Earth.

But Gerrold has not finished writing the next book in the series. He keeps saying he will. But I think its now a decade so...

625 RioBravo, well yes you could say there is when the hero kinda looses himself in an alien setting down in South America.

The most memorable time for me with the hero was him rebelling and wanting to get his mother mad. So he wore a skirt and make-up to a lunch with her. That was the only time it registered. I was more into finding out about the aliens and how the humans were dealing with it.

Liz, aka Lizard, is a military pilot. Bit older than the hero. But they grow close and become a pair.

The thing is, a non carpetbagging masshole R could have won.

So thanks, "new Republican" Scott Brown.

Posted by: mynewhandle at May 13, 2015 11:07 PM (AkOaV)

668 but again, I'm in full on fuck GOP mode right now, so I guess I ultimately don't care who fucks me in DC by "representing" me.

669 Dunno about Grexit, but if there were a Texit, I'd move to Texas in a heartbeat.

670 Odds are, when the aliens (well, the rest of them) arrive openly, it will be to sell us stuff in exchange for mineral rights to our solar system.

Mind you, it will all be cheap junk. But it will seem really cool because we've never seen it before.

On the other hand, tissue regenerators and lightsabers.

Oh yeah. I'd trade in my car for a truck, buy some camo clothes and head south west in a second.

672 Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at May 13, 2015 11:08 PM (bLnSU)

Shit, I'd trade some sun hydrogen for a lightsaber.

Are you fucking kidding me? How badass would that be?

Posted by: eman at May 13, 2015 10:58 PM (MQEz6)

Oh, of course they are. But I do like this:

The alien says "Jesus? Yeah, he comes back every couple of weeks. When he came the first time, we gave him cookies. Why? What did you guys do?"

675 I live in SoCal....there is a rhino congressman in my district that is just hanging on. Think I'm gonna vote dem just to get rid of the f&%$#ker....

676 These are "my favorite movie star took me to the prom" fantasies.

True.

Being a pessimist (who dumps Tori and Ian on here), I've proposed that the first aliens who come here will be astromuslims. Or, maybe, Ming; running through loops of tape they got from our radio broadcasts, finding Hitler 1936 and blurting out "oh, HE had PROMISE".

677 Odds are, when the aliens (well, the rest of them) arrive openly, it will be to sell us stuff in exchange for mineral rights to our solar system.

I'd sell them Manhattan for some space beads and a lifetime supply of extraterrestrial booze.

I mean we have to do SOMETHING to make SOMEONE in DC listen to us.

Because right now we're getting the big middle finger from the entire city.

679 "Oh yeah. I'd trade in my car for a truck, buy some camo clothes and head south west in a second."

Well, then, what the fcuk?

680 Romulan Ale and Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Posted by: Boss Moss at May 13, 2015 11:13 PM (o68RC)

681 Aliens can take comets and asteroids from our Solar System all they want, and probably already have.

That's all they would need. Comets and rocks loaded with goodies: frozen, floating weightless, at low speed.

683 663 No, RWC. I'm fucking drunk and lovin' it.

Oh, did I mention 'Fuck You, Ovechkin, you goddamn pussy'?

Fuck you, Ovechkjin, you goddamn overconfident Russian pussy!

Cool bro! Did you chant . 'Were #1. We're #1'

Even though you had no part in it, did you at least give them the chant?

Pay no attention to taxes or laws.

685 Didn't think of the Mooslim's reactions, actually. That would be sweet. Maybe then they'd climb out of the 9th century, if only to be able to travel in space to eliminate some more infidels.

Of course, exporting jihad to other planets would probably get Earth destroyed, Death Star style.

687 I've said it before: Jeb Bush will absolutely flop in the primaries. Guaranteed. I'm guessing it will be Walker or Perry or some other governor with someone like Rubio or Martinez as VP. The field needs to be winnowed down. The Republicans always have too many "candidates" who are just interested in raising their media profile or hocking a book.

Not on your life. The RAN-JUHS are only halfway there. But they sent Cindy Crosby and motherfucking Ovechkin packing. And that's always a good thing.

Posted by: RickZ at May 13, 2015 11:27 PM (aLrSh)

689 Government can do it, 'cause of the gravitivity and polarity and shit!
