Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (5-10-2015) - The Prodigal Cob Returns EditionWell I'm back - and fully jet-lagged, exhausted, satisfied, along with a depleted bank account. Which is really how all foreign adventures should end. Here are a few random observations... - London is a great city. Lots of stuff to do, with every niche interest catered to and very easy to get around in. I think Samuel Johnson's famous quote about London got it right. But man do the pounds seem to fly out of your wallet... - I actually saw the horrible, bad, sexist Is Your Body Beach-Ready? ad on the way from the airport to my hotel. No one local commented on it or even knew it was controversial. Only Americans were even aware of the controversy. - The British are inordinately proud of the NHS despite it being it being one of the worst nationalized health systems in Europe (maybe the world) in terms of efficiency and actual care given. But it seems to be a secular article of faith among all political classes that the British NHS is simply teh Awesome. - The UK election had already seemed to be going on forever via osmosis from my reading Daily Mail articles and then I ended up there near the peak 24/7 coverage of it. And if you think our TV media is biased, then you haven't seen the UK media in action. Pretty much every announcer or pundit - even on the independent, 'conservative' stations - just assumed that the Tories hate the poor and that the UKIP were just UGGHH - so racist and xenophobic and hateful that in a decent political system they wouldn't even be allowed to run for office. Even the token 'right-winger' in panels would only go so far as to say that not everything that Nigel Farage says is crazy/racist. - I happened to be in the middle of a tour of Parliament when the birth of Princess Charlotte was announced. The tour guide who was a very knowledgeable, formal, older lady got a radio message, broke out into a smile, and then stopped the tour to announce the birth and explain the new princess' place in the royal family and historical precedents for similar princesses becoming Queens. All the staff were beaming and even the normally scary guards carrying MP5s cracked a smile. - I took a tour of Churchill's WWII underground bunker near Parliament and got to see the famous Map Room and an actual Enigma machine. I also saw the movie The Imitation Game on the flight back. I was familiar with the entire code-breaking story beforehand and had my doubts that it could be ever be made into a movie but I was wrong. It was a great movie and Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent. - Iceland was cool - in the 30s and 40s but not uncomfortable. It turns out that thanks to the gulf stream Iceland actually has warmer winters than most of the US. - The main thing I noticed about the Icelandic landscape was the lack of trees. I assumed this was due to the climate but it turns out that it used to be covered with Birch forests but the viking settlers cut down most of the trees and then there was a cooling of the climate for several centuries which prevented the trees from growing back and led to a lot of erosion. They're currently in the midst of a national tree replanting program. - Almost all Icelanders speak English fluently. Which is a good thing since Icelandic is a hard language to speak with lots of weird, drunken Danish-like sounds in it. - While there are a good number of blonde, blue-eyed Icelandic women, the more typical phenotype is Amanda Knox-lookalikes . Which makes sense given that most Icelanders are the descendants of Norwegian vikings and their female Celtic slaves. - I got to enjoy several hot springs which were very nice. I even joined the 50 deg C club by swimming in a nearly frozen lake (approximately 4 deg C) for about 8 seconds and then briskly walking back into the 56 deg C sauna to restart my circulatory system. Which luckily worked. Best part of Icelandic hot springs is that they usually have walk-up/swim-up bars where you can order the drink of your choice - which I totally made use of. And yes the Blue Lagoon hot spring pool is just as beautiful and awesome as it looks in print. More to come shortly....

Local friend from Scotland very much blames NHS for the misdiagnosis and mistreatment of her B-i-l which lead to his (relatively) early death. Then again, she lives in Texas now so she may never have been a true-believer to begin with.

Nice Maet. How did you get Parliament tour? I heard you needed to get an MP to get them for you. My lawyer had one said the neatest thing about Parliament is the number of bars. Said most of the PM are totally wasted most of the time. Also since there are over 600 they are almost like county commissioners, everyone knows one and they can not all get into the chamber.

The whole social media, lets get em fired thing doesn't fill me with joy - even when the person probably deserved it. Especially if they are mostly just dumb losers.
There's a whole blog that just scours social media for white ppl saying racist stuff and then gets them fired. http://racistsgettingfired.tumblr.com/ Looks like they got a lot of business from the Baltimore riots. Looking for people calling rioters "animals" and "savages" or, ideally, the n-word. They take screenshots of the tweets or Facebook messages, text messages, etc, then the group tracks down their employer and gets them fired. They seem to mostly do it for fun. Called my Mother tonight to wish her a Happy Mothers Day (with love). I unleashed a snarky comment or two and was told by her that I am not allowed to engage in snark until I'm 70 (I'm 61, she's almost 86). I said, "Oh, sure, and when I'm 70, you'll say I cannot do it until I'm 80. That's just like an old person -- claim a benefit of old-age crochetiness for yourself and then pull up the ladder behind you!" We had a good laugh about that. Love you, Mom! "London is a very nice city."
Apart from the, y'know, Londonistan issue. Getting to rub shoulders with people who privately and fervently wish for my head to be separated from my shoulders isn't really my cup of tea. "Lots of stuff to do, with every niche interest catered to and very easy to get around in." Hey, I have a niche interest in handguns. Any good shops in London who cater to the likes of me? No? Thought not. Now if "every niche interest" refers to indulging obscure prurient fetishes, THAT is a claim I will believe about London. Last time I was there, printed stickers abounded in public places advertising various specialized prostitution services. I'm pretty unshockable, but I also have a threshold for what constitutes good taste and good manners, and it was speedily exceeded. Being a great city means something more than just having an abundance of call girls and rent boys. Posted by: torquewrench at May 10, 2015 11:30 PM (noWW6) 135

The museums were free every day. I was only there a week but could have spent so much more time there. I was able to visit a pub on Westminster that my ancestor owned in 1841. They've been told repeatedly by their state media that the NHS delivers the finest medical care in the world, something to which ordinary nationalist pride lends confirmation bias. The British used to be proud of their Empire. Well, that's gone for a burton, so believing in claims of NHS excellence is about all they have left. And the private media in the UK are so deeply in bed with the state power structure there (cough Rupert Murdoch cough) that it is only rarely and quietly noted by said private media that this claim is utter bullshit. I can't tell you how many conversations I have had in which I note to Britons that the UK has the worst cancer survival statistics in the developed world, to be met with an utterly blank stare. For extra fun, quote comparative (pre-Obamacare-era) survival statistics for common cancers in the US versus the UK. Posted by: torquewrench at May 10, 2015 11:39 PM (noWW6) 165

Prayers sent Iasonas. Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; Her eager body quivers. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Posted by: RWC - team BOHICA at May 10, 2015 11:41 PM (XAFOu) 174

I don't have a problem with the notion of reforesting Iceland, if it's what the citizens wish. I think it is pretty well established that it was well-forested at the time of the Norse settlement, during the Medieval Warm Period (which, in itself, gives the lie to CAGW "theory", since that theory holds that temperatures have remained more or less constant for several millenia at least).
Presumably, as the warm period waned, the settlers cut down all the forests for firewood, and with the climate being colder, the forest could not regenerate fast enough to outpace the cutting. Cold-adapted tree varieties, well cared-for, should be able to grow there. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 11, 2015 12:54 AM (Yosnw) 340

My London tourist story--may have told it here before:
Spending winter break in England to study theater there--basically got 4 credits to see some shows, including RSC productions (Emperor Palpatine in the Tempest? Intense.) and drink daily in pubs. One night, returning to the hotel, I was accosted by a woman with some minor facial cuts who demanded money for a cab, claiming her boyfriend had beaten her. This was about 2 blocks from a hospital that even a Yank like me could easily find the signs for it. I refused to give her money and she spit on me, just missing my face, before storming off. I assume this was an attempted shakedown, either a play for pity or an accomplice would jump me when I reached for my wallet. Got back to the hotel as quickly as I could without running. Otherwise, though, I found the country enjoyable. Prices were outrageous, though, and the quality of food apart from breakfast was mediocre to just bad. It was probably all the drama you were seeing for credit that alerted you to the acting in the woman's plea. And, as for the food.....you weren't attempting to eat English food, were you? You can get good Chinese, Indian, or Asian fusion cooking all day and all night. I can heartily recommend Wagamama and Bar Shu, specifically -- but I've heard a ton of good things about other restaurants. Wow, I was just refamiliarized with something I wrote a couple years ago. It is now, I have learned, the most popular thing I have ever written!
I knew it was popular, but I didn't know it had grown this popular. What could it be? A brilliant essay? An hilarious photo report? A crazy news scoop? No, no, no. In fact, it wasn't even political, and I didn't write it under the name "zombie." It was this: An answer to someone else's really ridiculous computer question on a computer discussion forum. Seriously. The forum has a visitor counter for posts, and my answer is now up to 3.8 million hits!! After two years. And growing. I hadn't seen it for a long time, but I was clearing out old bookmarks and there it was. It also has over 1500 replies, most of them along the lines of "OMG, this is the simplest and most amazing solution to most perplexing computer issue! You saved my life! Genius!" Wish I could tell you what it was, but then you might be able to Google it and discover one of my other online pseudonyms (not that that would be any closer to my "real" name," but you understand). Basically, someone asked a question about a very annoying (and apparently very common) computer problem that everyone has always assumed must be a major system software glitch, possibly requiring wiping the drive. I myself two years ago had encountered that very same problem and had spent days researching how to fix it, and discovered a very oddball suggestion written in stilted English on some obscure foreign blog and tried it, and it worked, so back on the (major well-known) computer forum I described my experience and rewrote how to do the solution in very clear English with unmistakable instructions (a huge improvement on the original). Essentially, the solution is on the same sophistication level as "Give the computer a good smack on the left side" -- something almost that comically simplistic and brutish. But incredibly, it works to solve this particular infuriating problem, almost every time. People around the world have discovered my answer, and it has now become a frequently referenced classic computer fix-it solution. Strange how I, a complete computer buffoon, found my greatest calling as a tech support expert. Posted by: zombie at May 11, 2015 02:48 AM (jBuUi) 425

Welcome back, Maet! Your vaca sounds awesome. My Swedish instructor had a particular interest in Iceland and translated Icelandic poetry (you can imagine the deftness required). He observed that the skies in Iceland seemed very "high" when I observed that Sweden's skies were low (as in, low clouds).
Anyway, I wanted to recommened "Korpen Flygur" - at least, that was the Swedish title (try googling "Iceland Flight of the Raven" and the entire thing is on Youtube). It's an Icelandic movie about an Irishman who travels to Iceland to avenge the death of his family and the capture of his sister at the hands of Vikings. It's a violent but enjoyable movie. The funniest thing is watching these burly rough Icelanders riding their tiny horses on the beach. Posted by: Miley's Tongue at May 11, 2015 01:49 PM (+Y3QE) 535
