Open Thread: Something Nice [Y-not]

Here's a nice story:

South African Dave Meinert rescued the four-week-old Great Dane from an irresponsible breeder after she was born with a pigment deficiency defect that can leads to deafness and blindness.

Most of the pup's siblings were either dead or deformed, according to a PetaPixel report.

So he recorded her every day.

Dave told PetaPixel: "I still don't know how long she is going to live, but right now is pretty great."

Good attitude.

Open thread to talk about nice things.

12 I have rescued 2 Great Danes. Both had great personalities. Geordie a all white was blind and deaf but was house broken and trainable. Picard was grey with Black patches and brindling. was full grown and only 80 lbs when I got him. he filled out to 140lbs. They were not to spec results of over breeding. Picard became severly epileptic and Geordie jumped into a wal and broke his neck.
Now I have a 3 lb toy poodle.

I was there yesterday as well. Pretty cool. We were behind the WWII memorial on the Lincoln Memorial side so we couldn't really hear much of what was being said over the PA. My wife would ask me what each plane was and what it was used for. After I answered on a couple I noticed a woman next to us who was leaning towards me. I looked at her and she said she just wanted to hear my narration. We spent the day at the museum Thursday, we started with the tour and the docent was a retired Navy guy who had flown S-2s.

47 Patty, my neighbors Great Dane, was a gentle giant. A more loving or docile creature could not be found. Unfortunately they tend not to live long lives. She was eight when she passed on last year. She was laying in the yard and I walked up to the fence and called her, she did not respond. She had not been ill or showed any signs of distress. From what I gather, and I am certainly no expert on the breed, it is not uncommon for one to have a heart attack and die suddenly and unexpectedly. I still miss her, especially after watching this video.

Heard on the radio that Sierra Leone is now ebola free. Odd but a few months ago, their ebola docs were dying like flies. They attributed the end of ebola due to people changing their behaviors. If HIV is any indication, in a few years people will go back to their old ways. Anyways, what about the virus being found in various body fluids much loner than they said. They told people to use condoms for 90 days. Now they say it must be used forever.

73 I miss my Mama. Mama's been gone since December 2001. She had congestive heart failure, but I believe she never recovered from the shock of 9-11. On our first visit after the attack, when I saw her in S.C., her heartbreak was very much apparent. She lasted about 90 days after the attack and in many ways she was a victim. Many of us are, and in many different ways. I will have my justice one day. Remember, if you still have your Mama, love on her.

77 I talked to Mom briefly today - it was my brother's turn to visit her. He and my sister visit her regularly - I can't because of the distance. I write to her once a week - letters with pictures, and my sister and brother read her the letters.
Mom had a bad fall, two or three days after Thanksgiving last year, and broke some bones in her neck in falling. She's paralyzed from the shoulders down, and they hope with aggressive therapy she'll be able to use her hands. But walking on her own is probably not gonna happen. She just got her jazzy custom wheel-chair this week, so that is something.
But the fall meant an end to living in the lovely house in the country that she and Dad built, the social life she had in the town where she lived, the gardening, the pets ... everything - all gone. The plan is that when the house sells, my sister will use some of the funds to add to her own house, so Mom can live there with a full-time caretaker.
Mom sounded chipper enough, but my brother says she has good days and bad days.

So if your A/C stops working on your older car, don't take it to the shop.

Spend $40 for a can of refrigerant (which purportedly fixes leaks also) and add it to your system. More often than not it will fix you up. Yeah, you have/had a leak, but fixing an a/c leak can be big $$. Chances are that $40 can get you through the summer.

My beloved mom passed on Valentines 2012 at 100 years 5 months. During the last nine months, I spent the majority of my time in Texas with mom, reliving the days of old when dad returned from the Pacific, the first home, birth of sister, and other events memorable to mom.

In the early morning hours on the day of her passing she called out and I went to the master suite and we spoke. This happened many times and she was accustomed to my spending a few minutes with her and then returning to sleep the balance of the night.

This particular morning was different for me and I assumed it was different for mom. I spoke with her in a low comforting voice and told her it was alright to go and be with dad. I mentioned dad was waiting to dance with her as they spent their adult lives ballroom dancing. She smiled but never spoke, and I returned to sleep.

At 08:15 the following morning, the day nurse called out, "come quick, come quick", and as I entered the room the nurse was reciting the Lord's Prayer. My sister and I joined the recitation, and mom looked at me, centered her head, and her eyes closed.

It was a long journey, but ended painlessly and without regret. She was a loving mom who gave her all, and we reciprocated in kind. I miss her deeply, but knowing she passed so effortlessly makes my grieving less painful.

Happy Mother's Day mom!

Growing up, my mom always told me "I love you, honey. And I'll love you just as much when you're in prison!" So I knew there would be no tearful plea to the judge about how I was getting my life back together.

I envision a bunch of us Hordelings shamefacedly toeing the cement floor of our cell while Mom signs the release papers. "We're sorry Eris's Mom! But they started it!" ((points to frat broheims in the other cell))

101 My happy story:

I rescued a little black kitten that had been abandoned by his mom. The neighbor fed ferals (and trapped and spayed and neutered and doctored and dewormed and deflea'd them so it wasn't some crazy woman... at least that way) and this little kitten was pushed out by the competition I think.

What decided me to keep him was the way he perched on a pumpkin I had picked out of the garden and put on the porch, and he looked sweet and adorable.

Took him in, deflea'd him, introduced him to my other cats, fed him up, and took him to the vet.

Vet said FIV, prognosis, 6 months top, you want me to put him down?

I said no, he's happy now, if he gets bad I'll bring him in.

Been 6 years now.
Happy cat though.

After I answered on a couple I noticed a woman next to us who was leaning towards me. I looked at her and she said she just wanted to hear my narration.

I received a most gratifying complement ever from members of my Scout troop last month when we toured Gettysburg NMHP on bicycles. I was able to tell them about what had occurred at most places we stopped and I was able to make the information interesting to them. Several of them went out of their way to thank me for having provided them with the best tour of a historical site that they had ever experienced.

105 Krebs, the National Open Bowling Tournament is in Syracuse in 2018. Now that I'm retired, I can take my time coming and going. Yeah, I think most forget that Pickett's charge wasn't the only battle. There was the Peach Orchard, Devil's Den, Little Round Top, Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill.
The American Civil War was the preface to the trench warfare of WWI. After the carnage of modern weapons matched with Napoleonic tactics brought about the battles, and the trench warfare, of Petersburg and Richmond.

There used to be a place here in Denver called Celebrity Lanes. It was a 100 lane bowling alley, complete with an indoor water park with slides and everything. It had two bars, an arcade, a large billiard room and it was very cool. In the same building was a Village Inn Pancake House. Owned by Disney. You literally could play there all day. The PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) even used to hold tournaments there.
They sold the property to Builder's Square for a metric crap ton of money because it was a prime location. Builder's Square went belly up two years later. That location was vacant for over a decade.

174 Lizzy, not to worry. They may be forecasting anywhere between three to seven inches, but it's been so warm and so wet, that most of it will melt before you even know it's there. We may see it on the grassy areas, but the roads will just be wet.
I sure will be glad when it starts drying out, though. I'm beginning to think that it's going to rain for forty days and forty nights and when the sewers back up, we're screwed.

179 We lost Mom in 2011 (and Dad this past January). But my wife got a couple of flats of marigolds and we'll go to breakfast tomorrow.

I remember how hard I would rack my brain for a good card for my Mom and she always appreciated it.

Both of our dogs are rescues. Our Boston belonged to an elderly lady who could no longer take care of him and placed him in a shelter. Funny little dog, a bit skittish but lovable.

My little Terrier mix escaped from her owners (who probably tied her out in the yard) and was found wandering around Newark, NJ. She's feisty but loving and loyal.

And a big thank you to all the moms and dogs for loving us.

Also in Taiwan, gelatin at the bottom of a glass of iced tea. Again, this was intentional, but imagine slugging back a cool glass of tea on a hot day and having something gelatinous hit the back of your throat unexpectedly.

184 Our 12-year-old Golden was lying on the kitchen floor, about to be put to sleep after he had reached late-stage lymphoma.

We invited some of his good buds in the neighborhood to stop by, one of which is a True Believer Obama-noid, who often posts-hard lefty stuff on Facebook.

We've been friendly, but politics has been off-limits, for obvious reasons.

But our dog loved her, and would always run to get the treats hidden in her pocket. (she had a dog too).

So....on his last day, having not moved a muscle for hours, he sees her as she comes into the kitchen, and proceeds to happily thump thump thump his tail on the floor.

"Complex emotions" doesn't begin to describe what we felt.
