If Obama Is a "Bookworm," Why Doesn't He, You Know, Read Books?

Related to the question, of course, "If Obama is an intellectual, why isn't he smart, and why doesn't he enjoy thinking?"

I've been on this for years. Mollie Hemingway dismantles Obama's contrived image as a "reader."

He's not. He's a TV watcher.

Speaking of people who don't read, AllahPundit has followed up and expanded on the story BenK covered, to wit, Chris Cuomo being a proud, loud know-nothing.

69 From almost any random sample of his statements, prepared or not, it's f**king obvious he's a mediocre, incredibly unworldly nothing. He - and almost everyone he associates with, his entire entourage/cabinet/etc., are the same.

These aren't people any worldly, intelligent person would bother to talk to for 2 minutes. They're vacuous, incredibly boring, obviously beset with lots of serious personality problems, and ignorant.

Just one, but an important one, of the things that "transformed" my perception of our populace and country almost completely - that such a ridiculous figure could be taken seriously for any responsible position. Much - much - less hailed as some bright interesting guy. Of course this is the perfect, degrading flipside to the absurd caricature of Bush, who read widely and actually took many serious topics seriously (just review the stem cell research decision and compare it to the airhead lefty dorm room nature of almost any of the nonsense coming out of the WH now), as a dummy.

75 Okay... also the "Fighting Words" thing about "speech not being protected."

That's like saying potatoes prove that birds fly.

Fighting words is about a defense against an assault charge- that is, two people are arguing, one throws out an insult, and the other hits him- was the attack justified? Fighting Words (which is a very narrow doctrine, as I understand it) says "it could be, maybe."

It says *nothing* about the speech itself. I am never "protected" by the first amendment from other individuals not working under the auspices of Government. As has been demonstrated on many occasions.

Nor does the "Fire in a crowded theater" say anything about the speech. It is not "shouting 'Fire!'" that is -itself- the offense. There might be any number of ways you could should "Fire!" in a crowded theater and it not be a violation of any law. For instance: if there was a fire.

The Constitutional protection of Free Speech is specifically to protect what would be called "hate speech," insofar as speech which is not provocative or controversial needs no protection.

As I understand it, NH has some ridiculous law against publicly insulting someone.

Some asshole (Chaplinsky) called a cop a "fascist" and was arrested for it.

I don't think you could use "he insulted me" as a defense to assault in any jurisdiction.

97 It grieves me that I rarely have time to read books for fun anymore, which is grimly ironic since I was a Literature major in college.

To the point: Adlai Stevenson, perenial Democratic candidate for President in the Eisenhowerera, was alsotouted by the press as a great public intellectual and, like President Obama, was also in reality a complete dunderheaded ignoramous. Robert Kennedy, after having finally met Stevenson, whom he had greatly admired, came away shocked at the man's sheer vapidity.

This is a game the Left has been playing for decades.

It depends. The left doesn't give a crap about Islam or "gay rights". They care about power.

If the leadership of the left sees a politically advantage in siding with the gay lobby it will go that way, or the Salafists it will go the other.

One thing to keep it mind it was as recent as 10 years ago that the Democrats felt comfortable gay baiting Republicans...the left has only one moral principle and it has nothing to do with "gay rights"...

That which gains the left more power is good, that which weakens the left is bad.

182 What Shayne's online rumination helped unveil was a previously secret, multi-day campaign of overhead surveillance by city and federal authorities during a period of historic political protest and unrest.

Discovery of the flights -- which involved at least two airplanes and the assistance of the FBI -- has prompted the American Civil Liberties Union to demand answers about the legal authority for the operations and the reach of the technology used. Planes armed with the latest surveillance systems can monitor larger areas than police helicopters and stay overhead longer, raising novel civil liberties issues that have so far gotten little scrutiny from courts.

185 In Ezra Klein's defense, the kind of books he'd pick to read and consider leftist approvedĐ are dull and I doubt I'd make it through, either.

It is an absolute well-documented fact that leftists love to be thought of as readers, but don't actually read a lot. They read some of a book, the blurb, and some reviews in order to be able to talk about hot books, but do not read them. They get books to put them on the shelf, and on the coffee table like trophies, but don't read them.

Its like the fake bands these hipster twits were asked about by Kimmel at Coachella:

I like non-fiction (although i read more fiction), but not usually biographies. Some of these are kind of biographical, like In the Garden of Beasts and the Lost City of Z, but they are framed around a moment in time, a historical event, an activity...

The problem with non-fiction is that sometimes the writing is not what I would wish. But when you find a good writer who is writing non-fiction? It'd endlessly fascinating.

Certain well-defined and narrowly limited categories of speech fall outside the bounds of constitutional protection. 345 Does Obama ever actually claim to be a reader? All he ever talks about is ESPN and golf.

you kidding me? You should have seen me read that 9 inch putt this morning. It's in the Hole!

Imagine playing a round with this jackwagon. It
would be like a mob boss, everyone has to shank it and deliberately
putt badly so he looks better.

I can certainly imagine playing around with him.

347 All of the books he supposedly read are either children/teen books, or have been made into MOVIES.

Just saying.

348 FWIW, and my apologies if someone already said this, Obama was captured holding Fareed "Now With 58% Unplagairized Content" Zakaria's Post American World book while on the campaign trail.

Given how scripted Progressive events are and how "handled" candidates are, I think the book was a signal to his base, a subliminal message to LIV (look, he has a book!), and he never actually read it.

349 Except for the fact that he's too old, "Il Dufe" sort of personifies the Stupid Left, where Saul Alinksky Meets the Dumbest Generation, where talking points replace actual thoughts.

350 Obama doesn't need to read books to be the greatest reader of all time. To believe otherwise is - racist.

I'm embarrassed to admit this but I actually read about half that book. Utterly vapid, meaningless pile of words. Personally, it has the distinction of being the only book I've ever deleted from my Amazon kindle library. Ugh, what a waste of time and space.

If he got anything out of that...can't be done.
