He winds up being a great source of material for threads such as these, and he's also someone I'm very pleased to call my friend. Enjoy! I'd planned to write a brilliant and entertaining essay, like the ones that I usually enjoy here, but my ADD had other plans. However, it leads me to a lot of random things that amuse me. More below the fold... Villains often get the most profound and badass dialogue in films and television, probably because they aren't bound by the moral code of the hero. Many can take the most innocuous story and make it terrifying. Miscellaneous stuff... Meals in molds, particularly including seafood, were a part of the hell of being a kid during the '70s, along with the polyester clothes, avocado-colored appliances, fondue, and Disco. I actually have one of my grandmother's fish molds. In case you’ve ever wished that your favorite horror movie had its own Ben & Jerry’s flavor. While this is very cool, prepared to be disappointed by the absence of two headed wolves. On the other hand, this might be an interesting mutation, or this may just be Russia: Is anyone missing a cat? I’ve seen maybe half of these, quite a few through MST3K, if that gives any idea of their quality, but Prophecy frightened me the most. I remember running into a plate glass window, trying to get back to the house, after watching it. This would be significantly less fun if it were real. After countless ruined friendships, and destroyed marriages, the science is finally settled. There was a time when we friendless losers tried not to broadcast it. I'm not even sure what I can say about this. Finally, you can hit me up on Twitter here, or if not, whatever. I can also occasionally be found here. Holy crap, I haven't posted in nine months. Damn, I need some co-bloggers. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

As many of the longer-term Rons & Ettes know, I lost our 10 year-old eldest a few years back to cancer. Every year, I honor his memory by joining a bunch of other clowns like me and biking the length and width of Connecticut to raise money for the Hole In the Wall Gang Camp's Hospital Outreach Program.
The Hole in the Wall Gand Camp was started by Paul Newman to give the camp experience to kids with life threatening illnesses. Its Hospital Outreach Program sends staff workers out to something like 2 dozen hospitals throughout the Northeast to "bring the camp to the kids" for children who are too sick to physically go to the camp themselves (they did this with something like 23,000 kids last year alone). When my son was in treatment, the visits from the Outreach Program staff workers were the highlight of his day. In the past, the AOS community has been prety generous in using a bit of their Valu-Rite budget and supoporting me. So, I'm going to the well one more time. Alert to fellow birdbrains/Morons: I rescued a bird from the jaws of one of my kittys this afternoon. The bird was in shock but breathing and no signs of blood, or dismemberment. I picked her up and put her on a limb of one of my trees which she was able to grasp but has been sitting there for the last 3 hours and not flying away as I had hoped.
I went out to check on her and she lifted up her right wing and I could see that it was raw were my vicious but adorable kitty had scratched her. It is red and somewhat raw looking but again, no visible traumatic damage except to the psych of birdie. Should I: A. Leave her alone and hope for the best as in let nature take it's course ? B. Swaddle her in a towel and place her on a high spot in my backyard on a flat surface with some seed and water so that she can rest and mend? What is weird, when I asked her if she was okay (yes, I am very weird) that is when she lifted her right wing to show me the kitty damage. Advice? Posted by: Cheri at May 04, 2015 11:09 PM (ZFPMM) 33

Its going from memory here of the wildlife rehab class I took, but they used to tell us that if a cat's bite broke the skin, the bird's wound will get horribly infected, so it needs antibiotics. Do't go by me though. There are rehabbers all over the place that can do that, and some vets will give a break on treating wildlife. Technically you're not supposed to possess it unless it's non-native or a pest species, or you have a license, so they'll probably take it away from you. Hope that's some help. The talk about 70s appliances reminded me of this. I have an Oster Kitchen Center (one of these: http://thmb.inkfrog.com/thumbn/dcutini/Oster_Kitchen_Center_001.JPG=450). The thing rocks, it can do everything in the kitchen, from blending to kneading to mixing to grinding meat. I can even shave ice to make snowballs. Anyhow, I had all the attachments except the food processor. A few weeks back I found one for sale at a thrift store with the food processor. $14 so I bought it. Just the other day I was looking at the two of them sitting side by side and realized that one is light avocado, and one is light harvest gold. So now I have to decide which 70s color scheme fits best in my 21st century kitchen. Hmm.

Cherie ...
You might want to do a light hydrogen peroxide spray to clean the wound. I was lucky to get "the bird" over to a wildlife sanctuary after the cat got it. They said much the same about cat saliva from bites but not sure about scratches only. I had a crow knocked out by hail and it took him a few hours to get his bearings and fly away. Even after he 'woke up'. Best of luck. Posted by: Adriane the Non Computer Virus Critic ... at May 04, 2015 11:41 PM (nSOh+) 206

>>> Yes they did and I had way more attention than money back then. I work on my girls cars now and they (the cars)piss me off with the complexity of simple fixes (all the crap I have to take off to get to what needs fixing) but you are right I would be working on them every 5k with little tweaks instead of every 50k with major breakdowns. And they both are at over 200k which a 70s car never made. Just reminiscing on when I liked working on cars I guess. Hmm. Bradley Manning is Bradley Manning, yet this traitorous little fruit loop decides he's really a girl his name is Chelsea and all the media lapdogs proceed to start calling him a "her" and calling him Chelsea. Meanwhile you have these muslim converts like the latest idiot "Elton Simpson." The media refers to him as Elton Simpson. Yet you find out that after he became a muslim he took the name "Ibrahim." But do they call him by that? Nope, they use his normal name. Such bullshit.

Last time I was there, I recall buying beer at a government store. Am I wrong about that?
I'm basing this on Ontario but I think it holds true for the other provinces with the exceptions I mention. Provincial governments have a monopoly on booze sales. (Booze; wine; domestic 6-packs; imported beers.) The major breweries have a pseudo-governmental deal where they have one retail outlet that does all of the sales as a monopoly (minor craft breweries were finally allowed into this) for all of the brands but in a generic beer store setting; with the brewers including microbrewers selling kegs to bars/pubs but even these are ordered through the beer stores' monopoly. There are provinces where beer (and wine?) is sold in corner stores like Quebec. Wine is sold in the provincial liquor stores, at the wineries themselves, and sometimes in limited retail settings. I think Alberta has either allowed private booze stores for all alcohol and gotten rid of the provincial monopoly entirely or have both. I know they do have some private retailers. Maybe the West is different having started out as territories with the exception of B.C. but as far as I know no federal laws apply to alcohol sales in Ontario and Quebec. (I don't know about the Atlantic provinces.) I know the breweries have deals with each other about selling only in their own markets (or used to at least before the big international breweries began buying ours out) which is why we couldn't get Moosehead or Schooner etc. in Ontario once, so maybe there's something similar about wine sales? I don't know if BC wines are sold here (although Okanagan wineries sounds familiar to me) but I'm not a wine drinker to know for sure.

They came in plastic screw top bottles.
Microbreweries sold their beer in Ontario that way too when they first began starting up. I think they're all sold in large glass bottles now instead. They used to have quart bottles in bars too when I was young. And the beer jugs I used to consume held about 3.5 legal pints as I did the math once using the scientific method of pouring out a full pint and finishing the entire glass before refilling it. If it was a place that knew you and you weren't a PITA, they'd let you buy a jug for yourself but the Ontario law actually says that jugs can only be sold to two or more individuals. "The Confectional" cheescake shop converts one location to catering-only, no retail sales. http://bit.ly/1R8kwsL Zpizza closes. http://bit.ly/1Qa1roD But according to this, who cares if Zpizza closes, lots of new restaurants are opening up and maybe the pizza wasn't that great anyway. http://bit.ly/1KIwc0W I know progressives love "nuance" so here's the nuance: the owner of Zpizza didn't wait around to see how bad it would get; she had a lease and had a specific window in which she could exit the lease or stay in it. She ran the numbers and chose to exit. So progressives are claiming that her shop's pizza wasn't that great anyway, plus they can claim that she didn't actually "know" that the business would become unprofitable. Vacuum lines tend to get worse over time without a violent shock. A micro switch will generally be a digital failure. Linkages etc can be wear items that cause problems that are cheap to fix and will show both slow fade and digital failure. Probably not much help but I fell bad I ignored the original question. I remember three women in the 1980 Flash Gordon movie. Melody Anderson, of course, who played Dale Arden. Then there was Ornela Muti, who played Princess Aura. Based on the mention of Erin Gray being in that movie, I thought she might've been the third woman, a Ming loyalist who I remember working her charms on Klytus. But, a quick Wikipedia search reveals that that character (General Kala) was played by Mariangela Melato.

From The Examiner:
"Since the death of Freddie Gray the media and liberals have been blaming racism and no money or jobs for the riots in Baltimore. The Obama administration and Democratically-controlled Congress made a huge investment into Baltimore, appropriating $1,831,768,487 though the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), commonly known as the stimulus. The city of Baltimore received over $1.8 billion from President Barack Obama’s stimulus law, including $467.1 million to invest in education and $26.5 million for crime prevention, reports Right Wing News on Monday. So, here's the $64,000 question. What happened to that money? Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at May 05, 2015 12:35 AM (F2IAQ) 392
I don't think the NDP will be a 25-plus-year dynasty in Alberta though, Vendette, as I'm sure they'll wipe out the economy quickly just like Boob did in Ontario. And they don't have an economy like Manitoba's or NDP Sask.'s to live that way when they were used to living well during the oil boom years.

Considering the outrages thrust upon us, outrages such as Obamacare, crazy crazy tax codes, incredible debt service, foolhardy foreign policy, full-on abdication of the rule of law on our borders, and now full-on abdication of the rule of law in our cities, I ask you what can become of us? We're not doing anything about the whole scale abandonment of the US government when it fails to perform its essential purpose such as border protection. We are standing around watching the destruction of this country and the abandonment of not only the rule of law but of the US Constitution. Wake up. Buy a gun. Get ready. Bit of a personal rant:
So one of the sites I use to review from is having a little trouble. And by 'little trouble" I mean that the talk about plagiarism that have floated for a while (and no, I found _that_ out later, guess that'll learn me to search online for reputations first) wasn't limited to just one or two contributors who wrote infrequently. Apparently the site owner and chief contributor has been busted as having a number of reviews (I read at least 40, haven't confirmed how many) with large amounts of text directly lifted from other writers-including the kind of places that might have an interest in legally stomping on a roach. Life hack tip: It is 2015- If you lift something whole cloth it is easy to enter that into a search engine to check and find the original source. Don't do it. So now I'm reading condemnations of him and very loose accusations at the others who wrote there. Yay for guilt by association. Not shockingly the site is now 'under maintenance' and down and the Twitter account vanished which all seem like signs the guy realizes he is done. Had my own run in with him in late '12 over something that had me feeling he wasn't on the up and up (well that and him sending me a link to a pirate site to watch movies at to review for his site) but I am surprised he was this stupid, not thinking it would catch up to him. And probably the nail in his professional relationship is when one of his current writers contacted him as this was breaking and he blew her off saying all he ever wanted from the site when he made it was free movies- which of course said writers was so pissed about that they shared on a You-Tube video including the text of the conversation. And another life hack tip: Things in writing mean to be private don't always stay that way- if nothing else learn that from Hillary's actions in e-mailing. Conservative men often feel constrained by PC rules not to act like men in certain situations.
Liberal men can pay lip service to those rules while still hitting on women in inappropriate situations. A lot of conservative women thus end up sort of being pushed into dating liberal men. I sort of consider it a sacred duty to be a conservative horndog, at least online. It's harder in real life. Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at May 05, 2015 02:08 AM (a5m3K) 507

Whether or not there is a far-right depends in part on whether or not you accept media/leftist definitions.
Tea Party and SoCons are far right according to them. Though from my perspective as a true right-winger, I'm not sure what others mean by far right. I suppose I would consider myself one depending on where we set the Overton Window--I hold to old-school 19th century mainline Protestantism social beliefs (excepting women's rights) and Coolidge-esque budgetary policy. I believe the federal gov't budget should be about 80% Defense spending, and that there should be a line item every year for paying down the national debt. I'm pretty sure that makes me extreme compared to almost any Demo-rat and the GOPe. Here in the horde, it probably puts me slightly right of center. but I thought Alberta elected sensible candidates? Posted by: chemjeff at May 05, 2015 03:18 AM (2XMpf) I used to think so, too. But the current Progressive Conservative (really) government has gotten fat, lazy, and corrupt. They've done a little house-cleaning, but not nearly enough, IMHO, and the party on the right, WildRose, who will get my vote, has been badly shaken by having their first leader and several of her followers cross the floor to the PC's. Happily, none of the turncoats won nomination as PC's in the upcoming election. So there is a new, untried leader on the right, and the socialists, who get their strength largely from unionized government employees, are well-organized and well-financed. Hey CC, I have a link for you in my nic.
But of course you probably already know this. Posted by: GnuBreed at May 05, 2015 04:25 AM (pbY3m) Hadn't seen that before. I know the long-quoted statistic was that physician pay was only a couple percent of total healthcare costs for the country, which is why all the screaming to cut doctor pay as a way to save costs is bullsh*t. Even the "doc fix" is only a percentage of a percentage of healthcare costs.* *Philosophically I oppose the doc fix because it's a manipulation of an artificial framework to decide how much my time is worth, and it leads to really bizarre billing conventions. Practically speaking, I don't want my salary cut because my employer takes a 40% hit from Medicare. Posted by: Conservative Crank at May 05, 2015 04:44 AM (b2cFu) 732
Oh, I'm gonna let Cooth be Cooth, be he philosophizing or ranting. Had some popcorn earlier, but I'll take some quality whiskey or scotch through the USB, for medicinal purpose, of course.

I'm really reacting to the odious rancor of @705. It disgusts me that such petty, juvenile, tribalist crap can be labeled "debate" or "commentary". Sarah Palin, nyah, nyah, nyah -- Dick Cheney, nyah, nyah, nyah -- George W Bush, nyah, nyah, nyah -- Karl Rove, nyah, nyah, nyah......I hate a bunch of those low-life assholes, myself -- but I have reasons. I don't just mindlessly chant their names.
And when someone starts crapping on someone without a documentable reason....I hear "nyah, nyah, nyah." Posted by: cthulhu at May 05, 2015 05:05 AM (T1005) 735
Seems like we're in the crosshairs again today. Wonder whose cornflakes we pissed in this time?

Can't we ... ? Oh, fuck it.

I don't do social media, or I would. I'm probably already on enough lists already without making their jobs easier.
