Loser in the Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight? The Viewers

Actually, I did not see it, and to be honest I was barely even aware it was going on, but this guy says it was just terrible.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: the uber-bout that wasn’t. The so-called fight of the century was pay-per-snooze, a complete waste of everyone’s time and money -- except in a boxing community now rolling in obscene amounts of cash, surely in disbelief they fooled us rubes again.

...

But we ignored all this because we wanted the fight to be something greater than it was. We attached meaning to it when this was clearly a payout fight, at best. (Floyd even admitted as much.) Oh, they wanted to win, but this hardly evoked the memories of Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Sugar Ray, The Hitman and Hagler fighting brawls that would land them in hospitals for belts that defined them as athletes. This was just glorified sparring....

They thought that the "whoosh" made by Pacquiao’s missed punches and the crowd noise that followed would fool us into thinking this was a real bout, not robbery with the press of a PPV button. They were selling a lie and we were all too happy to buy into it.

Boxing is dead and Mayweather-Pacquiao killed it. Never again will people shell out $100 to watch two old men grab at each other for 36 minutes.

Unless there’s a rematch. Maybe that’s the one that’ll be different.

This guy agrees re: all the terribleness.

Apparently -- I know nothing about any of this, so when I say "apparently," I mean "someone else told me this" -- apparently Mayweather is a great boxer, as in, the actual boxing skill of boxing, which means he wins on points, and not on actually hitting people. Apparently the fight consisted of little more than Mayweather putting up an impregnable defense with his better boxing skills and much longer reach, and then occasionally throwing powder-puff punches just to get the judges to award him points for making contact.

Many people are saying "MMA won the fight," mixed martial arts being the major competitor to boxing -- and the rising competitor to boxing, and, actually, I think, the actually-more-popular-and-has-been-for-years fighting sport competitor to boxing.

When I first heard of this fight a month ago, and heard it would be the most lucrative fight ever, I actually assumed it was a UFC fight. I was surprised to hear it was boxing.

Oh well.

You know who knows how to stage a fight? CNN, that's who. They've had a great run of arranging, promoting, and cashing in on a series of high-profile fights between cops and "protesters."

If, like me, you grew up on Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, MMA (and UFC in particular which alternates PPVwith basic cable bouts and free on broadcast every other month) is the way to go. The first time you watch a match go to the ground, you may be skeptical, but the first time you see some guy suddenly get kicked in the face and knocked out, you're hooked.

59 One issue is in boxing, your fame and draw is a lagging indicator - by several years.

Mayweather was smart, financially, to wait until he and Pac were old to have this fight.

As a sporting contest it's lame cause they are both past their prime so we never got to see who would win at the peak, which is what sports fans want to see. That would have been 5 years ago.

But, yeah, the fight sucked. Boring as hell.

Posted by: toby928(C) at May 04, 2015 08:00 PM (rwI+c)

63 I thought it rather ironic that some of the older UFC guys are suing the UFC for concussions that they suffered whilst fighting. Let me get this straight. You get into a chain link cage, with gloves that have minimal padding, you beat and kick the absolute crap out of your opponent for major bucks, and now you whine because you might, or might not, have suffered a concussion. UFC/MMA is nothing more than a barroom brawl without the alcohol, and I'm not even sure about that.

Posted by: Old Blue at May 04, 2015 08:00 PM (9iR5/)

64 I think no one should ever refer to Mayweather as the 'best pound-for-pound' fighter ever again. Yes, he's technically skilled, and tactically sound, but he isn't well rounded enough to have that claim. 'Best pound-for-pound' implies someone who has shown they can do it all.

Also, kill the 10 point/round scoring system- it's just plain stupid that if I hit you and hurt you, and you hit me and don't, but hit me a few more times in a round, you get ten points and I get nine. It's also stupid that a round where they kill each other and a round where they trade a couple of jabs are deemed equal in value (points wise). It needs to be a zero baseline scoring system.

Bu that will never happen, also neither will any real standardization of rules (Ali made his name by getting things his way for the fight- loose ropes especially- take those away and he's nowhere near 'the greatest', except for the trash talk).

So, yeah, boxing is dead.

MMA lives.

Well, really MMA is safer. Boxing is consistent head trauma. MMA mixes it up, submissions and leg kicks hence less punching to the head.

---------
One of my biggest pet peeves. It's the National Anthem. It is not a song that you try to "Make My Own". It's not a cover song. This weekend at the Women's City Tournament (bowling), the association manager asked the women bowlers to sing the National Anthem. The one they played was Whitney Houston's version. The poor women were lost, because the cadence and range were just all wrong.
It is not your song for you to try to make it into whatever you want! It is my song! I will sing it like it is supposed to be sung. Without all the pauses and frills and wailing. IT IS MY SONG, NOT YOUR POP HIT!

It was the equivalent of a football game ending 14-3 and people saying the game sucked because there was no offense. Good defense is never appreciated, and especially not in boxing.

128 For a refreshing change of pace, find a way to watch any (really, all three) of the Ward-Gatti fights from the early 2000's. Last great bouts I've seen. Side note, my father had a photo of himself standing next to Marvin Hagler, taking a "punch" to the chin. He kept it on the fireplace mantle in the living room, I'm sure it's now prominently displayed at his new house, I'll check this summer.

129 Boxing is doing just fine and MMA is not a serious competitor. Just follow the money. No elite level talent will ever go into MMA when they can make 10X as much boxing. It's washed up boxers who go into MMA. Americans can't grasp that the center of gravity since the end of the Cold War has swung to Eastern Europe especially in the Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, and Heavyweight divisions. Then again I'm an unapologetic Klitschko fan and think if he was 1) American, and 2) Black, he'd be the most popular sports figure in the US.

133 If, like me, you grew up on Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, MMA (and UFC in particular which alternates PPVwith basic cable bouts and free on broadcast every other month) is the way to go. The first time you watch a match go to the ground, you may be skeptical, but the first time you see some guy suddenly get kicked in the face and knocked out, you're hooked.
Posted by: Methos at May 04, 2015 07:58 PM (ZbV+0)

The first UFC fight I saw, I can't remember the two fighters, but it was a competition being held for people that wanted to join the league. The finals round had two amazing fighters that beat the ever-loving crap out of each other for all three rounds, and was decided by a couple of points. The league owner came out on stage and said that he was so impressed that he was going to give the million dollar contract to both.

It's definitely real fighting, and that's what makes it interesting to watch.

Boxing will always be economically viable for a good looking, provocative, American/Western European champion. High level championship fights have achieved an event status reserved for few events.

195 I remember the early days of UFC on PPV.

With the likes of Royce Gracie. Tank Abbott. Ken Shamrock.

Really just three rules -- No eye gouging, biting, and nut punches.

One particular heavyweight match pitted a guy against a sumo-esque fighter near on to twice his size. The smaller fighter somehow managed to get the sumo down to his hands and knees, and started ferociously punching repeatedly at the back of the neck. I recall the commentators distinctly saying he pretty much has to punch to try and cripple the guy because that's the only spot the big guy was vulnerable and would feel it.

201 Pacquiao says he tore a rotator cuff (left side) in the week before the fight while sparring. The choices were either put it off by 3-4 months at the last minute, or take a legal numbing agent that US Boxing apparently approves of since it's doesn't actually improve performance. He claims that he was told that he'd be able to use it during the fight, then on fight day they said no he couldn't use it after all. Now he's got the choice between fighting with a torn rotator cuff or cancelling a fight on the day it happened. If his story is true, and honestly, I have no problem believing him, then it's another reason I haven't followed much of boxing for the last 20 years. Everything is suspect.

Who killed boxing. "I" said Pacquaio. "Though Mayweather's more slippery than mayo. I killed boxing."

Posted by: Mike Tyson at May 04, 2015 08:58 PM (XrHO0)

258 Mayweather's skill set is the functional equivalent of the baseball team that manufactures runs by walks, bunts, soft singles and base running and wins 100 games by one run. Now imagine if that team was the reigning World Series champion for nearly twenty years straight.

It's sort of a problem that he successfully deprives the sport of one of its foundational - and exciting elements - that being the violence of punches landed for the purpose of harming the other boxer. From time to time different sports have the problem where one aspect of the game overwhelms and dominates the other and creates a bad product for the spectator. In team sports it seems that tweaking the rules a bit can shift the balance back to competitiveness and honoring the spirit of the game (i.e. the shot clock in basketball, the 2005 NHL rules changes including erasing the red line, permitting offensive linemen to commit what amounts to unrecognized holding penalties on every down).

It's just not clear how the disparate governing authorities of boxing could amend the rules to produce a better product in the case of Mayweather.

Over and above that, what boxing truly needs is a stable of young heavyweights in contention that it hasn't had in twenty plus years.

273 I didn't get what the hype was all about. Mayweather was going to win, it wasn't going to be an exciting fight for a casual fan, and there would be no finish. Those were essentially guarantees going into it. I'd much rather watch a fight with UFC's top star, Ronda Rousey. She's finished 11 of 14 fights in under one minute, 13 of 14 in the first round. 12 via armbar submission. They're not going to last long, but you're going to have a really exciting main event with a finish. It beats 'one guy punches, the other guy dodges, they clinch, the referee separates them, rinse and repeat for 12 rounds.'

Posted by: X at May 04, 2015 11:39 PM (IIItV)

274 The greatest fights out there right now are women's MMA or lighter weight Kickboxing and Muay Thai.

Many of the top women fighters , Ronda Rousey, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Tiffany Van Soest, Caley Reese, to name a few, are just mean. They are always looking for a finish, not to dance around just to score points (which even lots of male mma fighters do) They exciting as hell and can put on a great, articulate, interview afterwards.

Same goes for light weight guys. My favorite fighters out there are Robin Van Roosmalen and Andy Souwer, 155 pound guys, hell Robin is like 5'5, who go out to knock your head off, and being kick boxing if you try to clinch to save yourself, you eat a knee or elbow. Robin may not have the KO power in all his fights, but he looks like a little Tyson, throwing nothing but bad intentioned strikes.
