Reminds me of our camp out this weekend. The camp site we were given was right next to the bathrooms (a huge step up from what I remember as a cub scout). That was nice for convenience.
What wasn't so nice was that the septic tank apparently fed sprinklers right by our camp site, so any time anyone took a shower, they'd kick on- spraying septic water directly up-wind of us.

I was reading an essay from the 1980's yesterday and the author nicely described that with pretty much anything that is centralized the desire is to standardize that particular function, which inevitably leads to simplification, and then oversimplification to the point that it is incapable of actually solving the supposed problem. Has the ring of truth in my view.

I think it is one reason why we should proceed with caution with police cameras. I suspect they are a positive step. But if the federal government is going to pay and provide - then I cannot support. I see police cameras as an idea that the federal government will get behind - society will get behind - and it will allow the federal government to reach into local police matters (more so than they already are).

They've been moving in that direction with civil rights investigations in to major departments (and then the "re-training" from the DOJ) plus all of the millions-of-strings-attached federal moneys.
Cameras are good. I think all public employees should be video recorded at all times. But yes, local PDs should pay for the cameras. They're in the $150 range, i think the PDs can afford to spring for it without federal help.

Yes - they have been moving in that direction. We should resist further encroachment.
Unfortunately, the federal government will use the police camera issue to extend their reach into local police departments.
We should not wish that - even if it meant local police are given police cameras.
Frankly, I wish to see how the cameras work first before deciding it is a net positive. I suspect it is - but I am cautious of the law of unintended consequences.
But I'm afraid the president will propose (and GOP will support) federal funding for police cameras. That is not something conservatives should support.

No its not. And financially, there is no reason municipalities can't pay for their own body cameras.
And the ship has already sailed on the whole camera thing. Virtually every police vehicle in america has a dash cam.
I just don't like the fact that cops can / do turn off their dash cams, point their car in a way that doesn't pick up "the action", and/or remove their lapel microphones when they don't want to be heard.
Or the fact that a lot of dash cam video "accidentally" gets recorded over before the paperwork to save it is processed.

I don't read his twitter feed, but I don't think anyone wants to destroy the police.
Just reign in the out of control bureaucracies of government at all levels -- federal, state, and local.
And for many of us living in blue cities, the police are just as political and unaccountable as any other bureaucracy... and officers treat citizens about as well as the people at the DMV treat us. Which is to say, like shit. And they openly violate our rights and laws daily and don't give a shit.
Basically, picture lois lerner and her team of "rogue Cincinnati IRS agents" running a PD.

I just don't like the fact that cops can / do turn off their dash cams, point their car in a way that doesn't pick up "the action", and/or remove their lapel microphones when they don't want to be heard.
Or the fact that a lot of dash cam video "accidentally" gets recorded over before the paperwork to save it is processed.

But you have identified a lot of issues with putting cameras on individuals. I know many localities already do it. That is how things should work in America. Let some localities test this out - it if works it should be adopted by others.

No, drugs or no drugs, there is no legal justification for having a bunch of tattooed 'roid raging punks with badges out on the streets busting skulls.
I've had this argument with so many people -- in blue cities, we have a very different experience with police then those of you who live in counties with elected sheriffs or even small towns with accountable, respectable local government and PDs.

They can't. SCOTUS ruled that cops are under no obligation to protect you. (back in the 70s I think. I don't remember the case, but it was in NYC and involved a boarding house for women and several women being raped and NYPD failing to respond to 3 or 4 increasingly terrified 911 calls)

Depends on the school, but yeah. It's trending that way.
Especially once the first round of losers drop out freshman year. By the time you get to sophomore / junior year, the ratio is even MORE in males favor PLUS you have all the underclassmen to go after.

No one is saying the police shouldn't be held accountable or that the Feds and States have gone overboard with the SWAT teams, etc. The problem is that libertarians seem to take every chance to call cops jack booted thugs and other things.
Cops have a tough job. They deal with morons, thugs, and nuts a lot of the day, especially in cities. I ran into my share of cops in Toledo and as log as you were polite, there was never an issue. But, libertarians seem to think that being a jerk with cops is some badge of honor and sticking it to the man. You can do that, but I don't think it helps make any point about Federal overreach.
