Something Uplifting for a Sunday Afternoon... Literally! [Y-not]

A couple of weeks ago our fearless leader (no, not Obama... the Head Ewok!) was enjoining us to unplug our televisions. He made some good arguments for what a soul-sucking time-waster TV programming is.

Anyway, not long after that thread the Mister and I went to see one of the touring shows of Cirque du Soleil, "Varekai." This was our third CdS show. Each one has been well worth the price of admission and has left us in awe of what human beings can accomplish. Very uplifting. I hated people a wee bit less after seeing that show.

Varekai's plot was loosely based on the legend of Icarus. There was a happy ending (Icarus recovered from his injuries and found love), but mostly CdS performances are an excuse to showcase some spectacular feats of skill, agility, strength, and bravery.

The most dangerous act in Varekai was the Russian Swings. Here's a clip with abysmal music (not from the show):

And here's a shorter clip that shows the performers jumping from one moving swing to another:

*Testing new format*

*Having trouble loading that one for some reason. Here's a link.*

Holee crapola!

Here's a documentary about Cirque du Soleil:

9 >>They come to Charlotte and stay a while. Never been.

They come here every other year, it seems. What's also amazing is the effort that goes into setting up the show. Lots of engineering involved. Really fascinating.

We went to opening night and I'm sad to say it was not sold-out. (Sad to say this b/c I really hope CdS keeps coming to Utah, so I want attendance to be good.)

13 >>I've never seen them, but my sister and BIL swear by the shows.

They are very atmospheric mood pieces. For example, b/c the cast is international and the whole thing is so global, there are multiple languages used. There are some performers who are NOT acrobats - they're singers - and they often seem to be singing in either a made up language or Esperanto or I don't know what. I heard some French in Varekai and some English and then something I could not place.

Think "The Fifth Element" with gymnasts!

Also, the performers are amazing. And TINY. Well, many of them are tiny tiny humans, even the men. Even with the makeup you can tell that there are different ethnicities, some Asians and Slavs and who knows. So the effect is again very futuristic almost or something.

One of the cool things in Varekai is the baton act. Yes, twirling batons! The gal kept the thing twirling without using her hands, somehow rolling it around her neck, back, chest. I still have no idea how she did it!

So it's kind of cool having been at Purdue for a while to think that the Golden Girl (their top twirler) might have a career in Cirque du Soleil someday!

27 >>23 Y-not, don't crowds make matters worse when you are hating on people?

Yes, I hate crowds. And for years my husband and I avoided things we wanted to see b/c of crowds. But now we just sort of form a pact w/ each other before we go to something that we won't let the idiots ruin it for us. Usually works.

We delayed leaving the show and sat in our car while the parking lot emptied, so that helped with the annoyance factor.

28 Fiesta week and helping put on one of the big parades. 10 days of city-wide parties and parades, and most everyone getting along great. There are always a few assholes in any single event with 350,000 people, but the vast majority, coming from all walks of life and cultures, are determined to be silly and good-natured.

40 Heh. Dragged my hubby to Circ du Soleil over 15 years ago, a work friend had spare tickets. Told him it was acrobats. It was Quidam, which is apparently a dark show for CdS? Light go out. Spotlight comes on midway down the main aisle....on a creepy clown walking amongst the audience. Loud voice beside me says, "I was told there would be no clowns!"

Yeah, will never live that one down.

Yep. It was a couple of weeks ago. I think my liver has almost recovered.

This year I got to work in the forming area of the biggest parade, and that was a ton of fun, very much the "organized chaos" cliche. I was in charge of one public school and its entries, and for awhile I lost the band, but they turned up just in time. Its not a parade without floats breaking down and entries getting lost, but it all turns out in the end. I really enjoyed it.

What activities help you hate your fellow human beings a little bit less?

I spent a good part of my adult career writing computer code, and like the Wizard in Wizard of Oz, was the guy hidden behind the curtains. What I love now are guys behind the curtains writing software that make my leisure time enjoyable. An example; last night I was streaming (Prime) music, I'd pick a single song, then the software took over. Pick after pick, dead on. Which means somewhere, buried in some cubicle(s) people are tagging every song in the music library with 'type' code and date, and probably other variables relating to popularity. It takes a lot of effort to make something look easy. It was as if someone had broken in my house, rifled through my records and cds, and made a list.

Amazon, right now imho, is capitalism at its finest. Hope they stay that way and hire American programmers first. That I don't know.

90 Been to most of the Cirque shows here in Las Vegas and except for Zumanity they're all amazing. Le Reve at Wynn's place is supposed be really good, though not strictly speaking an actual Cirque show.

The "language" used in the shows isn't a real language. It was just made up for these shows. That way everyone in the audience is on the same footing experience-wise.

101 92 Not familiar about the bottle opener on bottom of Negra Modelo bottles, but here are some funny print ads I found while researching.

Posted by: olddog in mo at May 03, 2015 03:15 PM (3eZI/)

Those are funny. I googled "quitapon", which is what the bottle opener bottle is called, and found this old Carta Blanca ad. Either I was misremembering about Negra Modelo, or both those beers had the quitapon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNPPed938TU

Why didn't my former employer Anheuser Busch have this? I've been told it was a liability issue if the bottle breaks, but I don't know if that's true. Maybe it's just the extra cost of the bottle.

Drinking beer. Lots and lots of beer.

I've found historical sites are a good way to escape human beings (except for the elderly widows who volunteer to work there--they're always happy to see me); 21st-century Americans are all at the mall or home watching TV. It's simultaneously sad and refreshing.

115 Lowes has a four bags of mulch for $10.00 sale till next week. Yesterday I'm in the car, in line. Some old codger (I'm guessing 70 plus years old) pulls to the left, parks, walks 50 feet, grabs two bags of mulch, walks back 50 feet, drops the mulch in back of car. Then walks 50 feet, grabs two bags of mulch, walks back 50 feet, drops the mulch in back of car. Then walks 50 feet, grabs two bags of mulch, walks back 50 feet, drops the mulch in back of car. Keeps doing this. Meanwhile, the Lowes employee (half a century younger) is moving one bag at a time, 10 feet.

After grabbing my eight bags, two at a time, I began to drive away, but old codger is going past. I rolled my window down and told him to stop embarrassing 'the kid'. He laughed.

I've had built-in bottle openers on key chains, thongs (flip flops, not undies you pervs), and visors. Most were not very good. That's why I typically stick to cans. Plus when on a boat its mostly a weight issue when hauling trash.

Recently I went to a friendraiser for the SAMMC Troop Support fund. We get the most severely wounded military here at SAMMC.

One section of the support group is called GreyHaired Moving and Storage. It's a bunch of guys all over 70 who furnish the homes or apartments that the wounded and their families move into (we're talking guys and gals who need medical treatment here for a year or so).

They pull their truck up to an empty house and within two hours those guys have installed basic furniture, made the beds, brought in dishes and cooking utensils and put them away in the kitchen, linens--everything they need. Amazing old farts, who are mostly veterans themselves.

That makes me feel better about people.

138 Something else I remembered about that playlist I listened to last night. On the very first date with the woman I eventually married we went to a club in NJ. Built on a pier over funky smelling (at low tide) mud bottom. No air conditioning. Cheap booze, live band. A couple of weak drinks. I'm no dancer, but the band returns and starts playing Loggins and Messina songs, starting with 'Angry Eyes' (to me the ultimate crank up the volume song, evah). I can't sit still so we dance. Turns out my date has won all sorts of dance contests. I'm a pretty pathetic dancer, being athletic and cis-heteronormative, with requisite lousy taste in clothes. After about forty five minutes the band takes a break, thank G-d. She's hardly even winded.

Fast forward four years. After the wedding and reception she has to pick up her things (all of her life possessions) which consist of a single suitcase and about a dozen albums, if that.

Fast forward to last night. Song playing in background, a relatively obscure one hit band of the 70's. Wife says, "I owned this album." I tell her I remember.

The very next song begins. Loggins and Messina. The very song that was part of our decision to give our son the name he bears.

I'll never understand atheists.
