Open Thread - We <3 Obamacare Edition [Weirddave]

I dunno how many of y'all saw this, or even realized it's significance if you did, but last week it was announced that Assurant is selling or closing its health insurance business.

With nearly 1 million customers, Assurant Health provides a broad array of insurance coverage to individuals, families and small employers including major medical, short-term and supplemental plans. The company expects Assurant Health to report a net operating loss for the quarter in the range of $80 million to $90 million. Approximately half of the loss is attributable to a reduction in 2014 estimated recoveries from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) risk mitigation programs. The remainder reflects elevated claims on 2015 ACA policies.

Not to get all inside baseball here, but this is kind of a big deal. Assurant is a major carrier, a Fortune 500 company, and they can't financially survive in the environment that the PPACA (Pee Pee Ca Ca) establishes. Moreover, they were the premier carrier offering short term health insurance across most of the country, short term coverage is often crucial for bridging gaps in coverage until the next Obamacare open enrollment. For many Americans, that's now gone. There is a company out of Texas which is still an option for people in 38 states, their business philosophy for the past few years has been “Obamacare sucks, we're just going to offer old fashioned, non ACA compliant plans. Yea, you'll have to pay the fine, but you'll be insured and it'll still cost less than Leviathan”. They're going great guns, but other than that, there's not much. UHC and HCC offer some short term plans in limited markets, and I suppose there are a few others, but Assurant was the 800lb gorilla of the short term market, covering 41 states, and now...poof!

The takeaway from this, the canary in the coalmine, is that a Fortune 500 insurance company, one that's been around since the 19th century, tried to play within ACA rules and utterly failed. There's going to be more of this. Major carriers are currently protected from loss by the risk corridor guarantees in the ACA (to simplify mightily, the Feds are covering their losses for the first 3 years), but that goes away by 2017, and we are going to see rate spikes and contracting networks that will make today seem like the good old days. Gonna see more companies fail, too. Isn't that a nice inauguration gift JEF's leaving for his successor?

And what will be the response from the left? “This isn't working! The free-market failed! (Never mind that it did no such thing) We need single-payor!”. And if Hildabeast, or Lieawatha, or Tommy Carcetti or the Catamount Communist or any other Dem is elected President, we'll get it too.

As was the plan all along.

13 Tens of millions of us need to just refuse to participate, and refuse to pay the fine.

Break the damned thing. Demolish it where it stands, do NOT wait for "congress", (aka Obummer's supine rubber stamp, Inc.), to deal with it. They won't.

Non compliance, by the millions.

Don't wait for "leadership" on this one. Every one of you is your own leader, every one is the living reflection of your own conscience and morality.

Yes, some of us are to be rounded up and made examples of. Happened after 1776, too.

Shall we be worthy of our forefathers? Or, will we fail both them, and our progeny.

Your actions are your decisions. Thoughts, ideas, ideals, philosophy and rhetoric fall by the side, meaningless.

Truly, "do or do not", applies here, and it applies now.

Break the bastards. Break them NOW!

20 The game is rigged by the political class, all around the dial.

I just saw a commercial on the TV for the campaign for the next mayor of Columbus. A black gentleman, James Ragland.

He was touting CRA as a means of "bringing up those neighborhoods lagging behind" in development.

CRA has been with us for decades now, and has been part of the cause for at least one major bank collapse cycle. It's working the same way as ACA will; reducing competition, leaving fewer banks, more big banks, easily controlled by the Federal Government. The financial system has largely been corrupted by this, and we wonder why, with this low prime rate, that investment is so moribund for many companies, and job growth is low.

The GOPe will raise money talking about this, but will do nothing.

21 I was going to make this comment, but the link beat me to it: Assurant is the leader in what the link calls lifestyle insurance, and they probably found it more profitable and less of a hassle to focus on it. For those who wonder, lifestyle insurance is what you buy when you cover your printer at Best Buy or the home warranty that you get with the house you just bought.

26 Next on the chopping block. Medicare Advantage plans. Lefttards hate these HMO networks with a passion because for the most part they work. Seniors and disabled people got better benefits and (gasp) the companies made a profit. A liberal will lie and tell you it's because HHS/HMA overpaid capitalization costs per enrolled when in truth the private companies had a better handle on costs and fraud than did the Medicare contractors.

27 Jim has the essence of it...you have to act.

By you, I mean you reading the blog. Not we, Not us.

When it comes down to it, nobody else is going to fix this country ( and it is fixable). Not the repukes, not the sworn defenders of this country, and I'm sure as hell not going to do anything (too fat, old, and scared).

It is up to the actions you take, and the people that you convince to join you.

Folks in New York and Connecticut did not register their guns, for instance.

A certain somebody (not me), visits the facebooks of police organizations and reminds them of the democratic party propaganda war against cops, especially after a cop is hurt when the democong go on particularly extreme anti-cop rampage. The rage is there, folks. Remind people of who they are and who their enemies are.

Waiting for the world to burn and hoping it doesnt get worse is a bad gamble. This is OUR country.

You are my brother. And ditto on the cash for very nearly everything. I only put enough into a bank to auto-pay my truck insurance, and about $50 above that "float" at any given time.

And never, ever use an ATM, or a debit card for purchases. Financially speaking, maintain the smallest digital footprint possible.

At a certain point, one has all the ammo and hardware useable before assuring one's own demise in any given confrontation.

So, I strive to save up for a needed surgery, and to otherwise be a cash-operator in the arena of my own medical choices.

But yes. Individual actions. By as many of us as will step up, in concert. No "us", no "we".

Just a metric buttload of millions of us, all deciding to bork the system in a tidal wave of individual Fuck You epiphanies.

NOW is as good a time to reach that conclusion as any.

The nature of it, I can walk on it, work on it. Painfully, but not into incapacitation.

They're going to have to re-break it, put a lateral screw in the foot, followed by four weeks totally off the foot, and another four weeks of not working....just mild ambulation, at the most.

The good news, I've got enough loose screws, they can use one of those.

I'm in CA, and whan Anthem, in December 2013, tried to jack my monthly premium 176%, I walked away.

I put the yearly cost, $6000.00, that Anthem wanted, away, just in case. By the end of 2015, I'll have $12,000.00, just in case. They get nothing.

I also made certain to get my SPT and MMR shots renewed in 2013 ... just before the measles outbreak in 2014. I thought I saw it coming, and I was just a bit over-cautious. I'm now having checks for immunity to Hep A &$28; B ( had some shots in 1990), measles, mumps, and rubella.

I plan on renewing shots for polio, and of the previous my tests indicate failed, meningococcus, HPV and a few others.

Like The Tentacled One, I dislike shots (well, not as much), but I've seen diseases in the Third World ...

I recommend getting shots, now, before ObamaCare makes such things the decision of others.

For a few dollars, I have (and you can) permanently avoided a number of ugly diseases ... and avoided having to discuss this subject with a government bureaucrat.

95 I got seriously sick just as all this was going on, I watched my service get worse and my costs get higher.

They gamed the system to force it to collapse so they could take control. It's what they *do*, it's what they always do.

And it doesn't matter how bad it is then, you won't be able to do anything about it. They want power, over what they don't care.

Some of them think they will make things better, despite (insert all of history here). But lots of them are just power-mad.

96 On an a non related (to Obamacare) note:

The Board of Education had a resignation in my town and they are looking to fill the slot. I meet all the qualifications to be a member. You have to be a citizen, a registered voter who lives in the township, be able to read and write (I guess as long as I don't have any typos in my resume and cover letter I qualify. You also can't be guilty of any serious crimes (Does putting out anti Obama signs count?) and can't have any other position in the township government. What do you think my chances of getting a seat on the BOE when they see on my resume that I'm a minister.? I wonder if I will even make it to the interviews.

This is an unpaid position but it's where the power is, It's certainly not in the PTA. I hope that some other conservatives apply. (If they check my voting record I'm still a registered Democrat.)

Got a cousin and her daughter and family about 8 miles out of town. It seems like a very cool place. Not sure about the winters, although I do have a couple of fur coats and pretty sure that will not earn me the approbation of the locals there.

211 To expand upon eman's comment and to use anime as the illustrative force, at one point in Crest of the Stars a little story is told by the narrator.

There was once this traveler who was injured and stranded on the road. A person came up to see what was wrong. As the injured traveler lay there, this person started to explain how the traveler should really live their life. And once they were done, got up and left.

Then another traveler came and sat down besides the injured person to ask what was wrong. After many questions the traveler was satisfied they knew what was wrong and left. Then a short while later came back with doctors and equipment from the nearest hospital to treat the injured person.

The first person represents United Mankind. The second person represents the Abh Empire. It is a story told on the planet Midgrat.

So the kids and I signed up with Assurant. Big company, right? Not big enough, evidently.

It's been less than 18 months and once again, the kids and I are losing our insurance. I don't believe this shit. I'm resisting the urge to go give every Democrat I know a punch in the face.

346 People have been not saying some other people have been trying to undermine our society, deliberately and with documented plans, for probably 70 years.

And here we are.

Maybe if we keep not saying it, things will change?

Or, alternatively, I will die because people are stupid.

Not going to calculate the odds here.

347 The ACA was designed to fail. It was designed to create more problems so that single payer, full on government controlled healthcare could be presented as the solution. So basically, because a small percentage of people didn't have healthcare, we have to overhaul the whole industry and nationalize it all. Sure there were the self employed that had trouble getting health insurance, but there was also the poor (didn't the poor get medicaid anyway ?).

I am sorry. There is point where I just stop feeling sorry for people that make poor choices. If ya wanted health insurance, then perhaps ya needed to forget the self employment thing and go work for someone. These are choices we all make. Why should millions of other people have to cater to a small few that chose to be self employed?

And the poor? Didn't they get medicaid? For those that didn't qualify for medicaid, again, this goes back to personal choices. Somewhere along the line someone who is an unskilled laborer made a choice to NOT get get trained in some useful trade. Whatever the circumstances, they chose not to go to trade school, college, or learn a skill that was marketable in the workplace so they could get something other than an unskilled labor position that did not have health insurance.

Why are the rest of us being punished for the poor choices and decision of a few? Why should the rest of us have to pay the consequences for someone else life choices?

348 For the person who said the ex asserted that "you don't care about poor people..."

All I can say is this: the dems don't care about poor people. They care so little about poor people that they want to make more of them.

You tell this guy that he doesn't care about the Middle Class and to eff off.

Tired. TIred of this kind of crap. Stop making other people PAY for your own life style choices and bad mistakes. Some of us worked our behinds off to have what we have, and a lot of us WERE the poor people!

349 Can't they get a stimulus check?

I mean, Solyndra got $500,000,000 and it allowed them to stay operating for at least a week!

"If ya wanted health insurance, then perhaps ya needed to forget the self employment thing and go work for someone."

Right. I'm a farmer, for your information. You want all us farmers to just quit doing what we do for a living? What do you plan to eat, anyway?

351 Mistress Overdone:

Self-employed here. And I DO HAVE INSURANCE.

or I DID, until that rat bastard Obama, Soros's creature, blew it up.

Now I have their SHITCARE, aka Obama"care," which pays for Jack Effin' Squat but costs nearly $600 a month -- for an individual policy.

But Thank You For Playing.

BTW, all: It wasn't the SELF-EMPLOYED people who didn't have insurance -- our plans were OUTLAWED and NUKED.

It was the UNEMPLOYED, FREE SHIT ARMY who didn't have coverage, for the most part, and were used as an excuse to nuke the entire fucking system.

Boy, you folks who are working for a corporation are really going to hate this. We self-employed folks, being defenseless and not nearly so numerous, have been used by these bastards as guinea pigs, but they're going to inject the rest of the population with this syphilitic plague in the next two years. By that time, they will have dynamited all avenues of escape [see, NHS, U.K.].
