Overnight Open Thread (5/3/15) [tmi3rd]

Good evening once again, Morons and Moronettes. Maetenloch is on assignment for one more week, so you'll get me tonight, and tomorrow night, you'll get @CraigR3521, one of my good friends from Facebook and Twitter, and a guy whose links I routinely borrow from.

I'm a little less lighthearted this evening, but there'll still be some fun with this. This is necessarily going to be long- content rolled in for the 24 hours I was working on this- so be advised ahead of time.

More beneath the fold!

There's an INCREDIBLE level of visible-from-space stupidity on display with regards to what's happening in Baltimore, and the broader problem that has been displayed in Ferguson and in Baltimore, and to a lesser degree with respect to the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin situation.

This is a whole list of links that are relevant to the discussion... I hope you'll go give these a good hard read and come back to the thread. I'd like to thank Fallen Sparrow and Little Miss Attila (currently on blog hiatus), along with my FB Morons and Twitterverse Morons for their contributions.

First of all, I give you the execrable Jarvis DeBerry from the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The man is, in my estimation, a contemptible race-baiter and an embarrassment to journalism (low as it already is), but this appears to be a mainstream view of how things are in many communities across America.

Next, Nate Silver notes that The Most Diverse Cities Are Often The Most Segregated, but seems to have absolutely ZERO idea what these cities have in common.

The next piece, which Ace has talked about, is David Simon On Baltimore's Anguish, in which Simon blames Martin O'Malley for this happening, while simultaneously saying he'd still vote for him for president. As ridiculous a remark as that is, it lends a certain legitimacy to this piece.

We hit the way-back machine for Virginia Postrel's piece for the LA Times (when Virginia was editing Reason Magazine) in 1992 called The Real Story Goes Beyond Black and White : Races: The rioters were multiracial, and so were the victims. More polarized versions only feed bigotry. In many ways, the same circumstances were in place during the Rodney King riots.

Here's Fallen Sparrow's take on it... he lives in the greater Baltimore/DC area, and he's got a very even-handed take on it that spares nobody in terms of responsibility.

...and here's an unnamed buddy of mine weighing in from Baltimore...

So, I don't want to inflame all my Baltimore peeps, hence the PM. They had to go for max charges against these guys whether true or not. There won't be a city left if they're not found culpable in some major way. This city doesn't have much of a "thinking" class, and the mob mentality that is currently inhabiting the streets will turn from "peaceful" to "burn it all down, especially cops" in a breath. Black panther leader wants to bring 10,000ppl to the march tomorrow. The protesters didn't wait for facts to come out before reacting with riots and looting (neither did Obama or Hillary before they threw the police under the bus, thank you very much) which has only exacerbated/created, the situation. Obviously, there's an issue, and it's unfortunate that the Mayor, whether hand-cuffed or voluntarily, didn't prepare for the possibility of what happened Monday by supporting the police and equipping them with proactive orders and Guard members to bolster their ranks, as if Ferguson never happened. It's a scary semi-calm right now. Everyone wants blood, and they'll have it one way or another. Is that foreboding enough for ya?!

I dare not post video of liberation theology teachings, nor the Malcolm X documentary here, but allow me to weigh in on a couple of things here, piece by piece...

First of all, the DeBerry piece- he wants so much for this to be about race, but for my take, it's got nothing to do with race other than the convenience of trying to make it about race. What you're seeing in New Orleans, Baltimore, and many other major US cities is the absolute lowest form of class warfare- making sure a certain group of people who are going without keep going without, in order to maintain power over them. As such, the conflict is not an attempt at "white supremacy", as DeBerry puts it, but another example of the failures of federal Wars On Anything, domestically.

The Nate Silver piece- does he really not see what these cities all have in common? I just don't understand how a man of his intelligence (and he is a VERY smart man) can't make that connection.

The David Simon piece is perhaps the most revealing- and this is also what I'm increasingly led to believe is one of the two roots of the problem. The first, which Simon lays out in exquisite detail, is the failure of the War On Drugs. In conjunction with the equally ill-fated War On Poverty, I can't point to a single positive outcome from any of the above. Simon notes that it's given many police carte blanche to detain or arrest anyone they see fit, based on geographic location and gut feeling. He makes some scary points about which groups of police it's militarized, and I found myself nodding with much of what he said in terms of his situational analysis. Again, the O'Malley thing... oddly enough, by saying he'd still vote for the guy (which makes me sick to my stomach) lends him a nonpartisan legitimacy that I couldn't have.

The Postrel piece lays out the exact same situation, but twenty years ago, with a slightly different cast of characters. It's interesting to note that she points out the successful inner-city business owners that the '92 media steadfastly refused to highlight.

Little Miss Attila made a good point that I can't excerpt- she was in Los Angeles in 1992- that the rioting essentially exposed the line between the decent and the indecent in Los Angeles. I'm not sure the same lines are clear in Baltimore.

And finally, my buddy on the ground in Baltimore... these arrests really do look like crowd control. I have no idea how this is going to go, but a lot of the charges thrown at the officers look like Hail Marys at this point. I suspect we'll see a similar outcome to what we did in Ferguson.

So what do we have? I'll leave that for you to decide, but I don't think we have much of a debate on the idea that we've seen actions over the past fifty years that have served only to divide the nation further, and have given voice to the most malevolent, most base motivations in humanity. The cycle is perpetuated by the continuous election of demagogues as leaders, and the leadership in place has no idea what to do without jeopardizing their strands of power.

A Medium piece (thanks again, Little Miss Attila) lays out a pretty solid take on the War on Drugs.

And that's before we get to dealing with the liberation theologists who have hijacked institutions of higher learning. Rather than helping unite the various threads of American society, it's served only to drive wedges between us. On one hand, we're supposed to wear sackcloth and dine on ashes, but when people with real ideas and methods show up to try to cause actual change in the affected areas, they're run off as some sort of interloper. I'd like to know what the actual realistic expectations are, so that I can either afford them the consideration they're due, or denounce them as the revanchist horseshit that I tend to hear coming from many of the activists. As things go, we seem to be seeing the no-go zones developing in the United States a la the UK and France..

One thing is for certain: until the cottage grievance industries are done away with, this kind of thing won't go away. It spawns little assholes like this.

Okay, onto lighter stuff...

Councilman Goes To Bathroom, Forgets To Take Off Microphone

Things got real awkward during a council meeting in Georgetown, Texas, when an unidentified councilman excused himself to use the bathroom. Unfortunately, the man forgot to turn off his microphone, so everyone heard his trip to the lavatory as it was amplified throughout the meeting. It seems he also forgot to wash his hands.

Why Do So Many People Hate The Sound Of Hillary Clinton's Voice?

Shorter version, because tl;dr? Might have more to do with being unable to believe anything coming out of her mouth, including a, an, and the, perhaps?

I've Probably Posted This Before...

...but I don't care, because it's awesome. Jonathan Mover was Joe Satriani's drummer for a long time, and this was a sound supplement record (!) out of Modern Drummer magazine in 1989.

And a piece I drew on for much of my professional work...

As many of you know, I made my living as an opera singer for many years, and still perform professionally on a semi-regular basis. When I finally got to perform Figaro in Rossini's Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, I shamelessly used as much material as I could from my hero, Bugs Bunny.

Ladies and gentlemen, Jamie Foxx on your National Anthem!

(tmi3rd cringes)

In seeing this, this is about all I could come up with...

As someone who sings the Star-Spangled Banner and O Canada at dozens of events each year, this is a particular pet peeve of mine. I have a number of high-caliber singer friends in the Las Vegas area, all of whom would have been honored to sing it, and done it for free- which I'd just about guarantee you Jamie Foxx didn't.

Oh, and they'd have been done in a minute and ten seconds, as opposed to this marathon dump Foxx takes on the anthem. The man has a nice timbre to his voice, and appears to vaguely know the notes, but like many "name" artists I know, his entourage does nothing but fluff him so that he thinks he can do no wrong. This might have been something actually kind of special if he'd sat down with a vocal coach and worked on it.

That sucked, Mr. Foxx. Have the smarts as a successful artist to know the difference between soulful and crap.

To close...

I have to be honest with you, my soul hurts watching the country tear itself apart like this. Blame can be assigned on a bunch of different levels, but these are ultimately our cities in our country. Yes, our leadership has failed us on many levels, but people's livelihoods (and in some cases, their very lives) are being destroyed, and that is tragic for all of us. Why so? Because it probably has to get worse before it gets better.

That said, I cannot and will not lose faith in my nation, mainly because I know that the Moron Nation is out there. Lurkers and non-lurkers alike, the sun never sets on the Moron Nation, and anywhere in the world I've traveled, there's been a Moron there to greet me.

So, my friends, keep the faith... things are always darkest before the dawn.

I'm off to bed, as I've got to be on the road early Monday morning, but thanks for reading, my friends. Y'all play nice and don't do anything to get me or the blog in trouble, willya? God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.

7 The class problems of "keeping the little man down" are tied directly to the Democrat Party, which sabotages the black community at every level. The purpose of this is to maintain a welfare-voting plantation.

From ebonics to minimum wage laws, Democratic Party initiatives are designed to keep as many people on that plantation as possible

It is rather hard to see a positive outcome to where we are now.

If we are focused on the political solution it would necessitate someone with Reagan's communication and organizational skills and a stronger will to fight as we now have a much more ignorant and disinterested electorate.

60 You can't throw money at sloth, bad manners, greed, and hatred and expect to make them all just go away. America has been doing that since 1965 and it was a waste of money. All it did was break up families. Education works. It teaches people how to treat others and live in a civilized world. How to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. How to respect other peoples property and, yes, rights. Baltimore thugs have not been educated since 1965.

98 Well, sometimes things look darkest just before they totally go to shit, and total darkness follows.

Let's all be cheery and shit, and maybe things will get better. But there are a handful of scattered people who want to stop this, a great mass of people who could care less, and a dedicated cadre of shit stirrers (like our President and his regime) that want to tear it up.

tmi3rd wants the best for the country, and he's a good person. I'm not trying to be an ass. But really, lay out in detail, the pathway, a method, a means of fixing things and turning the corner here. Where do we start?

All that hopeful populist stuff with the Tea Party is absolutely down the crapper. The so-called opposition party, called the Republicans, wants to feed out of the same corporatist rice bowl as the Leftist Democrats.

Make a wrong turn and you will find yourself on a street with people all over the road in front of you. If you are the wrong color you will be dragged out of your car and if lucky beaten badly. Bonus: First place that someone tried to carjack me in a heavy snowstorm within sight of police HQ with a .38 (fail), and first place I ever lived where a suspected murderer was arrested for murder and crack possession, made bail, murdered the family of 5 that turned him in and went free because there were no longer any witnesses. The larger, if not more important question, might be, is such societal decay inevitable. Is it simply cast into the human persona?

I'm inclined to believe that it might be..., at least when societies grow in committed, collective size.

To the extent that might be true, the founding father's concept of small states certainly suggests a more stable arrangement.

Were Balitmore and Maryland bereft of significant Federal benefits, I suspect it would be a more stable place. The Left/Liberal/Progressives always insist on jamming a big hypodermic into 'problems' and injecting more of the same poison that caused it in the first place.

I have my doubts that things can be reversed, but I will not stop trying. While I am no great admirer of Kennedy, and while his culpability in the affair is open to discussion, I nevertheless recall his response when he was asked how it was that he performed heroically (and let's not debate that) during the war. He said, "It was involuntary, they sank my boat."

209 I gotta be honest, Horde, I've actually been losing sleep over what is happening in my beloved country.

I wouldn't be having so much trouble if I knew what to do. Flee, or stay and fight? If I flee, where should I go? If I fight, what actions would actually be effective and not just make me a target?

In the last few weeks, acquaintances with whom I though we were on friendly terms mocked my Christianity out of the blue (i.e., we exchanging niceties, not debating). Suddenly, the way to prove you are a correctly thinking person is to treat Christians as second-class trash.

My husband's band was targeted by the state labor board which has insisted on misapplying labor law. We've spent hours and months and dollars trying to deal with it. They can steal our time and money and we have no recourse. I have wondered if this is payback for the band playing for Magpul's "Goodbye Colorado Gungrabbers" event. The band is non-political, but that wouldn't prevent the state from teaching them a lesson.

The point is, if you get sucked up in the State's harassment, it kind of takes you out of the fight. That's the risk in becoming a target (not to mention the aggravation).

So the question remains: what does a freedom-loving person do?

I'm 32, lived in Central FL while the Trayvon Martin BS was going on, not more than an hour from the epicenter of that shitstorm. Like you, it scared the crap out of me. Do what I did, move to Texas. The people here are a lot saner than they are out East, and there's still jobs to be had, and not just in the oil industry.

I believe it was Davy Crockett who once put it "You can all go to hell and I will go to Texas." Very wise man.

262 Good evening, Horde. I'm happy to report that I'm making fair progress to my SelfFundMe project, towards surgery for the foot, and the recovery time to follow.

Steadily gathering in the insurance claims on damaged roofs, steadily adding more to the "to build" pipeline.

May and June should prove to be record months, and long, long overdue.

God Bless the rapid and accurate fire of those Officers in Garland, TX. Might have been non Garland P.D. badges, working extra jobs in their areas, might have been actual Garland P.D.

Either way, those rounds were on target, and served the intended effect.

They stopped the threat.

That they did so terminally? Bonus!

267 The larger, if not more important question, might be, is such societal decay inevitable. Is it simply cast into the human persona?

I would answer yes, it is. Humans are flawed by nature--you can cast it as being hardwired for certain behaviors through evolution, it comes up the same way. You can't keep a lid on it forever; you can slow it and blunt it, but it still expresses.

It was easier when there were frontiers to go to when the "civilized" areas got too decadent. Now we're stuck, unless we find a way off this rock in a hurry; historically that usually means the whole mess collapses, game is called, the deck is shuffled, and you start again from there.

343 Spawn of SpyPeach.

Might we just call you Spawn, for short? Has certain horror movie overtones, warming to the withered souls and hardened hearts of many a Moron, I'm sure.

Oh, even better. Spawnette.

I think that oughta be official, right there. What'cha say, Horde?

Spawnette. A nic worthy of an up and coming Moronic 'Ette, if ever one was.

eBay. There's always some jackass who bought a thousand dollar set of irons, only to find he doesn't like the game (probably because he sucks. Pro tip: you will suck too)

Otherwise, look for a set of outdated clubs. Unlike computers, the tech doesn't matter for a beginner. Find a set of Ping Zing 2s from the late 90s. I still use em, and a newer club might help, but what you're really gonna need is about a thousand hours of range time.

402 SoSP -- the thing is, this entire blog runs by its own set of rules.......and the ONT runs by its own set of rules (which are not quite the same). But if you hang here for a while, you become part of the Moron Horde. And that's something.

For one thing, Morons are everywhere. And there are Morons who are experts in really weird stuff. And Morons are the sweetest, nicest, most forgiving, pleasant people to know that you could ever hope for.

Part of the confusion is defensive -- we face constant attempts at infiltration by SJW, trolls, Mobys, and the like. But things are so weird here, they seldom gain much of a foothold. Another part is that some jokes and stories just never go out of style -- you may want to scroll down the right column to the "Paul Anka Integrity Kick".

And, after a while, it becomes part of your resolution process. You come on and bounce ideas off of people -- and when someone gives you some crap, you think, "well, that's only XXXXXX -- and he's an asshole, anyway" or you get some information and go, "that's so cool -- I'm glad I asked."

And maybe comes a day when someone asks about something, and you think, "ooh, ooh, I know this one!!!!!"

Wilson, Tommy Armour, and Top Flite have golf clubs at the price your looking for. Dicks Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy have Top Flite. Tommy Armour is sold at Sports Authority. Wilson Pro Staffs are various places, don't know where now. I have been using Wilson ProStaff's for 12 years. This year I decided to go a different route and buy clubs form GigaGolf who are a company that builds there own clubs. The clubs are wonderful. The guy using them (me) is trying to knock the rust off from a long winter. Another trip to the driving range I go. I recommend you do the same. Take lessons if you can afford it.

Should I win one though, the next MoMeet would be on a chartered Cruise Ship, with nothing but Morons and Moron Approved celebrities and political stars such as The Nuge the Cruz, Gutfield, and all the Fox News babes as money could buy.

For the 'Ettes? I'd hire, for example, Marcus Luttrell, to select, staff and brief about a hundred of the best SF guys from across the services, to be on board, as honorary Morons. No assigned duties, but I'm sure there'd be many volunteers?

Sadly, this would be the Cruise with No Cameras.

And a secret itinerary. And no, we'd not be anchoring out off of Pedo Island, either.

That said, either Clinton could come aboard as our chum. I mean, those pelagic fish aren't going to come to the fantail without something for bait, are they?

422 @406 - right now Canada is the alpha dog in the North American pack, I hope the Canadian electorate recognizes just how good their leadership is. Abbott in Australia is finally settling in, and the Kiwis aren't so hopeless as they looked a decade ago.

The issue is that right now the big players of the Anglosphere, the US and the UK...well, Cameron's a sail-trimming nonentity and our clown might as well be an agent of foreign powers. The BEST we can expect from the upcoming Brit elections is that the Tories hold, and I'd like to think that the US electorate might do something sane in a year but then I figured Obama could not be reelected in 2012, so my judgment is obviously suspect.

Well, you know what Mark Twain said about golf, "a nice walk, spoiled". And another wit who said, "Golf: an exercise in which oddly-dressed men attempt to put a small white pill into a hole in the ground, using implements singularly unsuited to the job."

But wrapping the shaft of a club around a tree trunk is great cardio, so I hear.

That's kayaking. If you are upside-down in a canoe, you're doing it wrong.

Actually, being able to deal with an overturned canoe is a skill that all canoeists should learn. Because shit happens. But kayakers expect to roll over, and because they have a tarp to seal the hull of the kayak to their body, the hull doesn't fill with water when they roll. Different boats, different skill set.

Good point. Guess I'd rather pay the $50 fine than deal with a burst bladder, and if I were sufficiently discreet about, I wouldn't draw the attention of the cops anyway.

IIRC, here in Canada, public urination can draw a charge of indecent exposure, but the defense of "necessity" also exists. So, normally the cops will only charge if you are being a dick about it.

546 Here's my problem with jazz-inspired versions of the National Anthem like Jamie Foxx's - the National Anthem is not about the singer. Singing the National Anthem is not an opportunity for personal expression and personal aggrandizement. When you're invited to sing the National Anthem you're singing on behalf of everybody in the arena and you should respect the song and the audience and sing it straight. Jazz is all about personal style and personal expression and inherently the wrong style when singing the National Anthem. Jazz seeks to call attention to the performer, at the expense of the song. When you're asked to sign the National Anthem, you should leave your ego at home. It's not about you.

Rant over.

The Maker Faire in SF is a really good time. It's sort-of a PG version of Burning Man Lite. I would seriously recommend it for nearly everyone -- 'cause it's so diverse (and weird) that almost everyone can find a corner of special joy in it.

As an example from last year -- some folks had rigged little photo-electric bee counters on the openings to their commercial beehive, and were driving real-time stats on how many foragers were out collecting nectar and pollen over the course of a day. "How doth the little busy bee improve each shining hour?" -- well, to start with, 100 of 'em get their little asses up at 6 am. It's just kicky, interesting, weird, nerdy stuff in large abundance.

And you'd really have trouble finding someone to punch you. From the gearheads to the fire freaks to the robot duellists to the SCA, everyone is pretty much on their best behavior to have a good time.
