Early Morning Thread 5/3/15: Just One Meal - Toledo. [krakatoa]

Ohio.

Yeah, I know. Spain would be much cooler, right?

If you could only have one meal in Toledo Ohio though, what would it be?

9 The Science is Settled ...

How Climate Model Complexity Influences Sea Ice Stability

We find that the stability of the ice cover vastly increases with the inclusion of spatial communication via meridional heat transport or a seasonal cycle in solar forcing, being most stable when both are included. If the associated parameters are set to values that correspond to the current climate, the ice retreat is reversible and there is no instability when the climate is warmed. The two parameters have to be reduced by at least a factor of 3 for instability to occur. This implies that the sea ice cover may be substantially more stable than has been suggested in previous idealized modeling studies.

... or more simply, Al Gore was WRONG when he said the Arctic would be "ice free" this year.

20 I had Ohio pizza once. Terrible. Lifeless. Bland.

Funny thing is the shop did a makeover tv show with that Brit dude who said the exact same thing. But he had them change the sauce. The problem was the dough.

I believe that dough needs to sit around for at least 24 hours before being fit for human consumption. It has to live and breath and all the little yeasty boys and all the little yeasty girls get a chance to get nasty and do some reproducin'.

26 In this interview, Jackson discusses how Democrats excel at making themselves look good, while convincing blacks that conservatives and Republicans are bad, evil and racist. Contrasting the rhetorical flourish of the Democrats to a rapist who makes his victims feel they, not the rapist, are responsible for the crime, Jackson says "Democrats have raped black people and raped America and then said, they [Republicans] did it."

27 I ended up on the back roads outside of Toledo Ohio and found a Waffle House just off 23. I90 isn't too far off, but here it is a toll road. I'd make it to Seattle eventually, but now all I wanted was my hashbrowns scattered covered and diced some scrambled eggs and sausage-the food police be damned. I'd been on the road all day from Tampa and this, I was promising myself, would be my final cross country drive. Had never been to Toledo before.

29 I've become obsessed with the decline and fall of NRO. Lowry has been so determined to wash NRO clean of any crimethinkers that he's left with the unreadable and irrelevant French and McCarthy as the two lead writers. Williamson is stuck in 1997. Ace is better than all of NRO put together. This is what happens when you try to conform to the left's standards of acceptable thinking.

30 The uncertainty comes at the beginning of what was supposed to have been a four-month victory lap of sorts -- starting with Bill and Chelsea Clinton's trip to Africa with major donors this week. Next week's splashy Clinton Global Initiative conference in Marrakesh was originally supposed to have been followed by a lavish reception and conference in Athens in June, and finally a September extravaganza in Manhattan featuring an appearance by Elton John. Instead, it's turned into heartburn for Hillary Clinton's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and for the foundation, which has been under increasing pressure to distance itself from its more controversial partners.

It scrapped early internal conversations about borrowing a private plane owned by Canadian billionaire donor Frank Giustra -- whose business ties to Russia have brought recent scrutiny -- to fly the delegation to Africa, according to sources with knowledge of the foundation's planning (the foundation would not say who owns the plane that was ultimately used, which suffered engine problems Wednesday and was forced to make an unscheduled landing).

And it canceled the Athens conference amid what foundation sources describe as concerns about damaging Hillary Clinton's campaign by collaborating with a Greek government that is increasingly close to Russia's combative president Vladimir Putin.

I like Williamson except for one time within the last 6 months/year where he wrote a column that was just so wrong.

But be that as it may, you raise the larger issue. You cannot argue with the left when you accept their general worldview. They must be roundly opposed and stopped. And when I say left, I also include the GOP which has totally accepted the direction of the nation. To them, conservative means status quo even after every Democrat administration has further ratcheted the socialism up.

We need a movement and party that will oppose and move us back as fast, thoroughly and constantly as possible - no matter what the pain may be.

Yeah, NRO is irrelevant. And, with the exception of Jeff Lord, so is American Spectator. IBD and American Thinker are go-to sites for me.

65 Personally, J.J., and I mentioned it above, I don't think RINO websites passing themselves off as conservative can handle the Truth of the matter, and that Truth is that they will not fight Owebama but rather praise the so-called leadership of Orange Weepy and The Turtle. They most especially hate talk of using the 2nd Amendment for the purpose it was originally intended, and that's not for plinking cans or hunting deer. I find those websites afraid of their own shadows as well as Democrat SJWs targeting them. They are cowards in today's world, just more bricks in the 'protect Owebama from mean things being said abut him' wall. I have no use for them as they have no solutions to offer, only the deleting of solutions offered by commenters.

68 Stringer at 60, that sounds like a good recconendation. I knew they had to have a place called Bybols. In my experience Lebanese places named Byblos are good, same with beirut in the title, all places named Cedars suck, you need to be very wary of places with a woman's name but they can be really good if you get lucky, or the kibbie will kill you. The word Taverna is usually a really good sign if it is in an old established neighborhood.

Spent Friday evening and yesterday at an orienteering meet in SE PA with my Scout troop. Beautiful weather, the young men competed well and I did not embarrass myself on the course. I even found a geocache in the spare time we adults had while the youths competed in the afternoon.

Back home today for our eighteenth wedding anniversary. The missus posted our wedding day photo -- we both are much greyer now, but our love is no less. I will finish and present to her the silver and pearl ring that I have been making in jewelry class for her today; tomorrow I will begin work on its matching necklace.

Have a great day, morons! Find a way to create some order, peace and dignity in this country that seems bound and determined to have none of it.

84 Conservatism is in a transition. There are some conservatives (Lowry) who believe that somehow conservatism can be made acceptable. It can't. There is no acceptable, mainstream version of conservatism in the US today. If you read Slate, the problem in Baltimore is not racism, it is a society that is evil to its core. So all the conservatives who imagine they are protected by the "let me be clear, racism is wrong" paragraph, don't fool yourself. Nobody is buying it. That why the winning conservatives won't make any apologies, won't pretend to care about Baltimore/Ferguson/police abuses, won't pretend to care about racism. That just plays into the agenda of the left. Angry leftists need timid, browbeaten conservatives to feign indignation at charges of racism. Conservatives need to say, homie don't play that game (see, conservatives can make pop culture references too).

99 I went to the University of Toledo and I live just 60 miles from there. I've tried Byblos and Beirut, and they're OK. There's much better Lebanese food in Detroit, and I'm picky enough that I'd rather drive 1.3 hours to go there instead. Tony Packo's is more of a tourist thing, with food you'd eat on a dare, flaming hot pickles and whatnot.

My favorite place in Toledo: J. Alexander's, on Talmadge Road, just south of Central Avenue.

Yeah, I know, that's boring, it's part of a chain. with about 25 locations across the country, so ti's not as though you'd be experiencing local quinine that you couldn't find anywhere else.

But they have wood-fired steaks. Their prime rib is outstanding. They have a house old-fashioned (the Uptown Old-fashioned) that's great. Hell, here's what you should order:

Appetizer, if there are two of you: Deviled eggs. With the Uptown Old Fashioned.

Salad: Alex's salad with blue cheese dressing. Their salads are crisp and cold, with house-fried croutons and great dressing.

Prime rib, medium rare, with orzo and wild rice as the side. And another Uptown Old Fashioned.

Carrot cake for dessert, if you're man enough. It's soaked in butter. Probably about 1000 calories just by itself.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A police officer shot in the head while attempting to stop a man suspected of carrying a handgun was hospitalized in critical but stable condition Sunday and a suspect was in custody in the case, the fifth shooting of a New York City officer in as many months, officials said.
Officer Brian Moore, 25, underwent surgery after being rushed in a patrol car to a Queens hospital Saturday evening after he and his partner pulled up in an unmarked police car to a man who was adjusting his waistband suspiciously, police Commissioner William Bratton said.
The officers exchanged words with the man before he turned suddenly and fired at least twice, striking Moore, Bratton said. His partner, Officer Erik Jansen, 30, radioed for help.
"They did not have an opportunity to get out and return fire," the commissioner said at a Saturday night news conference at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with Mayor Bill de Blasio and other officials.

Here in my corner of Pennsylvania, Baltimore Harbor is a favorite of many high school class trips this time of year. I went with my own daughter many years ago as chaperone. I was in charge of a buncha teenage girls who went from store to store spending money. The main reason I went along was concerns about safety.

I would not let my children return today. I would bet I'm not alone and that most schools are gonna cancel. The wrong people will get punished, as the thugs fight for the right of heroin dealers to be left alone to ply their trade.

119 NASASpaceflight.com is another of my favorite sites. It's the best spaceflight site on the entire internet.

Despite the name, it is not connected to NASA. It was started by a British guy who was a Space Shuttle buff. But it has grown by leaps and bounds, and features commenters from all over the world. Its coverage of foreign space flight is unmatched in the English language.

Ironically, because of its high quality, it has also attracted commenters who are current or former NASA employees, as well as others in the space industry. Needless to say, they bring a perspective and personal knowledge that you can't buy for any amount of money.

My own comments usually are limited to asking questions. Otherwise, I just read and learn.

126 So I belong to a religion that is known for being very conservative. Most of us are solid Republicans, but some of my fellow church-goers are liberals and Democrats. Generally it's fine and we just don't discuss politics when we know we're socializing with someone who doesn't share our point of view. But with the recent furor over gay marriage and the refusal to tolerate that some religions still endorse the idea of marriage being one man and one woman, I'm wondering how long it will be before the Democrats at church will have to decide which is more important, their religion or their politics.

I give them five years, probably fewer. It's incredible to me that we will reach a point in this country that was founded on freedom of religion where people will have to decide between religion or politics, but there's where we're headed.

154 Conservatism is in a transition.

165 For pizza? The "Original" Gino's. For "Been there done That"? Packo's. Steak? Ahmed's or Mancy's. Seafood after a Concert? Bluewater Grill. Bar-B-Que? City-Q...it's the only REAL Texas Brisket in hundreds of miles, pulled pig is NC correct too. Mex? San Marcos. Greek? Mano's. Lebanese? Beirut or Byblo's....but if you are in the area why go out? Give Josh and I a holler and we'll fire up the grill, lay spark to the bonfire, hang new targets on the fence and caution the neighbors that it will get loud.

166 It's technically in Maumee, Ohio, but there is a small Thai place on Dussel Drive called Bangkok Kitchen that my family loves. In Toledo proper there is an excellent (if pricy) place on Airport Highway called Korea-na. It serves Korean food by the way. If you're looking for traditional American fair the best recommendation I would give you is ICE a restaurant. Excellent food (try the ICE cubes, they're delicious) and located in the basement of one of the closest things Toledo has to a skyscraper. It has a very classy "old school" decor that harkens back to when Toledo was actually a nice place to live in. They also have Jazz shows every now and then. I don't think they're open on Sundays, though.

Hah, all these years of living here and enjoying good food have finally paid off.

168 After giving this a great deal of thought I can say with authority that I've never eaten anything in Ohio.

169 Wait--that's not true. I've had Cincinnati chili. In Cincinnati. It's great.

171 I live near Toledo. Best place to eat is J Alexander$ near Franklin Mall. if you want real Thai Food at normal working man prices, go to the Bangkok Cafe in Northwood, 5 miles east of Toledo near US 280 and Route 51. Eat well, live well.

I completely agree. Toledo should be treated like a more retarded version of Cincinnati.

174 Agree to the commenters that Byblos and Beirut have the best hummus and lamb and a ton if other stuff.
But I keep coming back (home) for the Fricken' wings.
Fricker's has some of the best buffalo wings I have tasted.
I tell my family and friends that I can't wait to come home to see them every year...
They question whether I miss THEM or the Fricken' chicken wings...

175 Tony Packo's dogs, Rudy's chilidogs, Red Wells for beef and my mama's kitchen. Univ of Toledo grad. Been stuck in stupid Missouri for many years but getting ready to go home, in more ways than one. Ohio, home of the perfect football team and the best damn band in the land. Trust me.

176 The Seafood on Alexis on the border between Toledo & Sylvania - Excellent

Charlies Italian on Sylvania Ave - Try the carrot ginger soup.

Charlies Greek (not the same Charlie), is good too.

All of the others mentioned here are good too, although I think Uncle Johns Pancake House is better than IHOP.
