Republicans: Block This Corker Bill Immediately

Rubio's offering some bullshit amendments designed to make him appear Strong On Defense but he's just part of Failure Theater like the rest of them.

Without this bill, Obama needs 67 votes to approve the Iran treaty.

With the bill, the treaty is presumptively approved, and it takes 67 votes to disapprove of the treaty.

And this is Corker's way of showing he's "standing up to Obama."

How? By performing analingus on him?

This is just the latest insult from the Republican Party. All their bullshit is designed to trick conservatives into thinking they're taking a stance, when in fact they're voting with the Democrats.

If Corker has good reasons why this treaty should be passed -- and it's plain that he's a fan, because he's making up yet more Fake Opposition to pass it -- he should say so.

We could have an argument about it.

Maybe Corker has good reasons for wanting this treaty passed. Maybe, if I heard those reasons, I'd agree that it should be passed.

But Corker and McConnell fundamentally despise and disrespect Republican voters. That is why they never have an honest talk with us. They never explain "This is why we're retroactively approving Obama's executive amnesty. Do you agree with our reasons?"

No, they lie, they pretend they're opposed to it, and they stage productions of Failure Theater to trick conservatives into thinking they're opposing it -- but are just being outfoxed, by gum! -- when in fact they've voted in advance to lose on the issue.

They think conservatives are unreasonable, emotional, unthinking racist monsters, just like MSNBC does.

Because if they had the least respect for us, they'd explain their reasons for disagreeing with us, rather than tricking us, yet again, like we're a pack of unruly Retarded Children who must be tricked into going to the doctor.

Corker's bill does not impose limits on Obama; Corker's bill does not oppose the Iran treaty.

Corker's bill is a nasty trick to once again allow Republican officeholders pretend at opposing Obama, when they're just creating convoluted mechanisms to permit them to appear to be voting against him, when they're actually voting against him.

Without the Corker bill, Obama would need 67 Senate votes to pass his treaty. The treaty dies without the Corker bill.

With the Corker bill, Obama needs only 34 Senate votes to keep his treaty -- which is actually passed, beforehand, by the Corker bill.

The treaty passes into law with the Corker bill.

But Corker, McConnell, and the rest of the traitors will Lie To Your Fucking Face that they "did their best" when, once again, another Obama measure is passed by the Senate.

But by gum! They did their best. They fought so hard but they just couldn't do it.

Here's how you actually defeat Obama's treaty:

1. You scrap the Corker bill, which approves of the treaty, then requires a supermajority of 67 to block it it. (Something which will fail.)

2. Then, you vote against the treaty.

Simple, isn't it? You just vote against the treaty. You don't create a convoluted process where you first vote for the treaty and then later vote against it -- but oh darn! That first vote was the important one!

Failed again!

The fuck with these people.

They are lying to us, they are corrupt as the worst whores of hell, and they are leading this country into destruction.

Do not go gently on this Corker bill.

Raise Hell.

Let these vile motherfuckers know WE WILL NOT BE LIED TO ANY LONGER.

Then, you know, a few months later... time to move on.

52 Corker is and always has been a RINO. His current rating is 64 which is firmly in RINO territory. And the question is, how can they pass a treaty with less than 2/3 of the Senate voting for it?

Obama says he can do it as a deal between him and Iran. Well, a few short years ago we called the "deals" treaties. What I said originally on this happy horseshit was somebody need to present this directly to the Supreme Court under a writ of mandamus to force OBama to obey the law of the land and to define the difference between a "deal" and a "treaty".

But what really needs to happen is for Congress to impeach this lawless shitbag. But that is "off the table".

We have no opposition party and Corker is just a glaring example of that.

They are political.... but there's no "I want to go to DC because I believe in the Constitution, and I believe in liberty and " whatever fire in their belly.

It's "which party can I run in, based on my current geographic location, that will give me the best shot of winning a seat in DC and getting to be the one filling the trough so that my cronies, donors, and family can get rich from my influence and I can stack up enough chips in the influence and power bank to get fabulously wealthy when I retire?"

That's who they are. They don't give a fuck about their constituents beyond getting their votes and donations. DC isn't about "changing things" to them. Even the ones who may want to change things know they can't do shit.

So they go to get rich and powerful off the backs of the taxpayers. Because fuck it, that's what everyone else in DC and the surrounding areas does, so why not?

The GOP as a party looks to hold majorities only to the extent that it gives them committee chairs who attract larger checks from lobbyists. The GOP as individual members merely look for the greatest number of bribes they can collect. Actual legislation or constitutional rights are meaningless to them unless there is a payoff to their bank account involved.

Am I saying that virtually every member of congress is accepting bribes? Damn right I am - that is their whole purpose in being in DC.

The dems campaign on handing out more taxpayer dollars to every constituent group, then get kickbacks from the groups and a couple of family members or legacies on the payroll. All the GOP can do is cut taxes, if there are actual spending cuts, their bribe channels are narrowed.

You don't need to pass a law to tell Congress and the President to follow the supreme law of the land.

The constitution says you need 2/3s of the senate for any treaty.

Obama said "f that."

No senate resolution is going to change that. Obama announced his plan to ignore the constitution.

If the R's were as upset as they pretend to be, they'd say "fine, do whatever you want Obama. But this is not a treaty, its not worth the paper its (not) written on, you are not negotiating in good faith on behalf of the American people, and we will shut down the government for the next year and a half if you try to illegal unilaterally lift sanctions that Congress instituted."

But they're not, so they just pretend.

177 Dear XXX,

Speaker Boehner and House Republicans are suing President Obama for his unconstitutional overreach and abuse of power.

This Imperial President's unprecedented disregard for the Constitution and desire for more power has reached a new low.

Obama has ignored and selectively enforced the law. And he has repeatedly created new laws unilaterally. It's unconstitutional - it must be stopped.

President Obama has:

Unconstitutionally made radical changes to ObamaCare
Unconstitutionally forced through job killing new EPA regulations on the American people
Unconstitutionally increased what taxpayers pay to federal contractors
Unconstitutionally waived the statutory work requirements for welfare
Unconstitutionally created bureaucratic programs not authorized by Congress

It's time we stand up to President Obama-and it's time we stop his total disregard for the Constitution and rule of law.

The U.S. Constitution outright declares that the President "shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed." Yet, President Obama has not.

That is why House Republicans are launching a lawsuit against President Obama. And we need you by our side.

Add your name today in support of House Republicans' lawsuit against President Obama.

Thank you,

Chuck DeFeo
RNC Deputy Chief of Staff

They are terrified, terrified beyond reason, of being called "racist."

That's why they never stand up to Obama. "Why, why, he's black!!! Can't you see that? We cannot vote against a black man!!!"

With all due respect to ace, it's really not that insane. This bill, which is really the Menendez/Corker bill, was designed to force Obama to bring any proposed Iran deal to Congress because Obama had said he wouldn't.

Now is this a good bill? Doesn't appear to be from what I've seen but if Obama does sign it then he will at least have to go to Congress with the deal.

Sorry, JackStraw, I disagree with you. This bill is not merely "superfluous" (which has apparently become the Word Of The Day), it is actively damaging to the Constitution.

If Obama issues an EO, it has no force once he's out of office. Which is exactly what Republicans said weeks ago.

If the Republicans are really upset about it, they can shut the f*cker down because they control the purse strings. No money is spent and no taxes are raised without their say-so.

If they're really *really* upset, they can impeach him.

But this is bukkake theater. The point is not to stop Obama from doing a damn thing, it's to pretend they tried.

Fuck that. Either oppose him, or support him. But be honest about it so I can make an honest decision about opposing or supporting *you.*

47% was the number of people in 2012 who were not paying income taxes.

Not to beat this dead horse anymore, but all Romney said was "we're not going to sell a message of tax cuts to the 47% of the country who do not pay income taxes. They are takers, not makers, when its to be tax season."

Which is inarguably true.

His phrasing (I paraphrased, it was more awkward then that) was a little shitty, but mittbott 2012 and his "severely conservative" programming often had awkward rhetorical missteps. Not a big deal.

Media made it a narrative.

That's valid. But I'm not nearly as convinced as some that if Obama comes back with a really shitty deal, he will, that a lot of Dems won't object. Menendez is the most vocal but not the only Dem who doesn't like this deal.

And at least there is a shot this way. Otherwise, we were guaranteed to have Obama give Iran whatever they wanted.

It is so farking simple. But together non-controversial spending bills for the departments you want to fund.

Work on them sequentially.

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJLA) -- An investigation into the death of Baltimore resident Freddie Gray has found no evidence that his fatal injuries were caused during the videotaped arrest and interaction with police officers, according to multiple law enforcement sources.

The sources spoke to ABC7 News after being briefed on the findings of a police report tuned over to prosecutors on Thursday as well as preliminary findings made by the medical examiner's office.

Sources said the medical examiner found Gray's catastrophic injury was caused when he slammed into the back of the police transport van, apparently breaking his neck; a head injury he sustained matches a bolt in the back of the van.

Details surrounding exactly what caused Gray to slam into the back of the van was unclear. The officer driving the van has yet to give a statement to authorities. It’s also unclear whether Gray’s head injury was voluntary or was result of some other action.

She got the PhD last August, but couldn't walk across the stage until the Spring. I'm making her go to the ceremony next Saturday.

I earned that much.

It will be pointless to cancel the EO after the nuclear horse has left the barn.

Please.

He wouldn't agree to this unless Reid and McConnell promised him he'd have the votes to pass it.

Clearly the two of them couldnt get 67 votes, which is why they did this kabuki ridicuousness.

So they've promised to give Obama a fig leaf on Iran by coming up with 34 votes. That's already signed sealed and delivered.

If for some reason they can't get the 34 votes, Obama will simply "deem" it as passed, and we shall move on.

This R bill is designed to give Obama COVER not to challenge him at all.

Probably payback for amnesty -- Obama gave the R's cover by not forcing them to vote for (what the donors want) or against (what the voters want) amnesty by just EO'ing it in to place.

Now, Congress will help O out of a tough situation.

274 Details surrounding exactly what caused Gray to slam into the back of the van was unclear. The officer driving the van has yet to give a statement to authorities. It's also unclear whether Gray's head injury was voluntary or was result of some other action.

Allow me to direct attention to Andrew Branca's article today over on Legal Insurrection:

http://tinyurl.com/jvns6hz

Short version: A grave spinal injury could well have been unintentionally inflicted during the arrest, which went undetected until it started causing spasms and seizures in the van, thus accounting for the other passenger's account of what happened. Which is still potentially civilly liable even if the arrest was righteous.

I don't mean this in a funny Kindergarden Cop kind of vibe, but seriously, all it does is change the sanctions as I understand it. It's failure theater. You can rationalize it all you want, but that's all it is.

Let's say this bill passes. What happens next? Does TFG sign it? No. So now they have to override the veto. Good f*cking luck.

Or he does sign it. Do you think there *won't* be 34 votes to block the Senate's block?

So, if Iran is only 12 mos away from a nuke, we're screwed anyway (unless Israel does something). Nothing is going to change that. Not this bill. Not 1,000 bills.

It's not my fault the Republicans took impeachment off the table. It's not my fault they won't play hard-ball with the budget (there is always money involved, if nothing else the Republicans could threaten something the Democrats want).

But once they have taken those off the table, they don't get to tell me how they're really, really angry that the SCOAMT is running roughshod over the Constitution.

no one wants to do what's required to stop iran. obama is smart enough, and the MFM is craven enough, to create and float a POS. If the Stupid party stops it, or even delays it, there's the chance that when ( not if) Iran goes nuclear, the blame is on the GOP for preventing dear leader from working his magic.

If the POS passes, then the GOP voted in favor of it.

In a very sad way, we'd be better off with the EO/deal/pen and a phone horseshit.

311 The Republicans can't stop Obama lifting sanctions against Iran for the rest of his Presidency. PERIOD. They don't have the votes, though I wish they did.

The Corker-Menendez bill allows Congress to actually SEE the agreement and pause it's implementation for 30 days, 82 days at most. If a few Democrat Senators hate the agreement after they read it... TA-DA, there's the veto-proof majority to forbid the agreement in a separate bill.

This bill also forces the White House to report on compliance every 90 days.

This bill gives an outside chance, but without it, we get a secret, terrible agreement between Obama and Iran.

Right. The guy who authored the letter to the Supreme Leader of Iran telling him that Obama couldn't go it alone changed his mind over a highway naming.

As it happens, I don't have to ask him because he has already said. It's not much of a deal but its better than nothing. Sure, they could have written a tougher bill and Obama would have vetoed it and done it on his own. Now that is failure theater.

If the alternative is Obama doing a deal with zero Congressional input I'll take this bill as shitty as it may be.

Yeah, that's the ticket. Meanwhile they'll still be coming across the border and all the protections in the world aren't going to stop them from depressing the wages offered.

The constitution says any treaty requires the President signature and 2/3 of the Senate.

This "bill" they're passing flips that on its head. Now they need the presidents signature and 2/3 of the senate to DISAPPROVE of the bill.

So if they had done NOTHING, they'd be all set legally.

Also, I don't think its constitutional to do what they are doing by flipping the requirements for a treaty but who gives a shit.

Its also not constitutional to outsource one of their 22 enumerated powers (money supply) to the federal reserve, but no one seems to care about that either.

The choice is not 67 votes to ratify versus 67 to disapprove. Obama has said since before negotiations began a couple years ago that he had no intention of submitting it to the Senate at all. So there was NEVER going to be any ratification vote.

So the only way to give the Congress any voice at all - besides lifting sanctions, which is meaningless if Europe does since we do no business with Iran anyway - is to have a veto-proof majority to demand it. And you can't get Democrats on board for the demand for full treaty ratification. PERIOD.

If you don't think this is the best we could do, NAME the Democrats who would go along with something stronger. BUT don't act like an ignoramus by claiming we could have forced "2/3 ratification" when that was never in the cards. Nothing says the President has to submit all agreements as treaties, and in fact 90% of our international agreements in the last 30 years have been executive agreements not submitted as treaties.

And the correct answer was to impeach him immediately and/or shut down the government.

Seriously, the United States Constitution has two solutions to executive overreach. 1- Congress controls the purse-strings. 2- Impeachment.

Anything that is *not* one of those two remedies is unconstitutional, and nothing more than theater.

But, of course, politicians (heck, most citizens) don't actually give a rip about the Constitution except as a set of general guidelines.

We've been worse about following the Constitution than Captain Barbosa and the Pirate's Code.

And don't give me any lip about "elections." Electing Republicans isn't helping anyway. There is right, and there is wrong, and the Republican Party is currently supporting "wrong."

If JEF wants to pretend that a piece of paper will stop Iran, then he'll think that. If you think that "a congressional voice" wiil matter to JEF you're delusional.
he will point to their votes if and when this fails. Chamberlain became the scapegoat after 1938, even though he wasn't the only person that didn't want to go to war to protect the Sudetenland. Leave it to the stupid party to half-ass it yet again.

No its not, but they're playing semantics with us on what is a treaty and what is not.

Which is great. Because I love how the lawyerly weasels in DC can use word games to weasel out of all kind of shit, but try to get out of a traffic ticket or IRS audit or anything else with word games and semantics and see what happens.

IN FACT, this just went to the NC supreme court I believe. A driver was pulled over for a burned out tail light, cops searched found drugs, arrested him.

Turns out NC has no law that specifies you need all 3 tail lights (both sides and the one in the back windshield) operational. just 'a light'.

Guy fought it to the nc supreme court, thinking he found a technicality. Court said, "nah, the cop was operating in good faith. his search was legal. doesnt matter what the letter of the law says, we need to follow the intent."

Which is the same argument for OCare subsidies.

So sometimes semantics matter, other times they dont.

b) Time - it takes time to get this going

426 The debate over treaty vs. int'l exec. agreement is an old one - and for once, NOT an area where the current administration is really plowing new ground of extra- or un-constitutional behavior.

So there's a real, pre-existing quandary facing the GOP and (the few) sane-about-Iran Dems here. Many robust opponents of this whole collapse on Iran policy have had concerns about the Corker-Menendez approach (or anything similar) in that it might end of lending validity to any agreement.

Both Adjoran and AllenG have key bits right here - exec. agreements like this are not new or facially unconstitutional, and the real power of Congress continues to lie in control of $$$ and - in this case, as important - any *legislated* elements of sanctions where the president has not been given discretionary waiver authority.

I have not been able to find out if the key parts of the US sanctions are in fact legislated (they should be, as implementing legislation, but could be covered by agency actions or other exec. orders). So Congress can get a bite at the Iran apple, but it probably wouldn't involve any specific action WRT any exec. agreement.

None of which, sadly, really addresses the *underlying* truth of ace's rant. He might be off on the mechanics here, but there is no real reason to believe that the GOP would ever take a risk or break a sweat to do the right thing on any important issue. And just to save time, no, actually winning a vote in either House or a veto over-ride fight is *not* the only way to "win", or more importantly to win over time and alter the public framework of debate.

Since 1939, the US has entered into over 17,000 Executive Agreements with foreign nations, and roughly 1000 treaties. Executive Agreements have been around pretty much since the founding of the nation and there is a fuzzy line dividing the two.

It absolutely isn't clear that Congress would prevail that this Iran deal which is to remove sanctions in exchange for them stopping work on WMDs would qualify as a treaty and no doubt that Obama would declare this an EA. In fact, he already did.

452 The problem with Tennessee is open primaries.

We end up with 2-3 strong conservatives, a moderate, and a left-moderate running for the Republican nomination. On the D side, it's a left-moderate versus a more-left-moderate.

The democrat party discovered about 20 years ago that it can get it's people to vote in the republican primary and set up a win-win situation for them. That's how a guy who was in Mayors Against Illegal Guns was able to defeat *all* the pro-gun candidates in the republican gubernatorial primary in 2010.

The state republican party leadership has *also* figured this out....and that's how they got in to office in the first place.

So even here, in deep red Tennessee...we don't have conservatives running things.

A big ole bitch. The clue was the gag line about "Congress having a voice". The only way sanctions come off legally is if Congress says so. They'd be giving that away. There will be no inspections. it should have been a dead letter then. Anyone who lived through the 70s and "trust but verify" recognizes this.

How does that change anything?

I'm not going to look up the 17,000 executive agreements, but I doubt they were anything like this.

But even if they were, they were all unconstitutional.

The constitution does not provide a framework for "executive agreements"

It uses a word -- "treaty" -- which is pretty well understood by everyone who speaks English as a first, second, or third language.

Step by step they set precedents, and every future president expands on those precedents and before you know it a President says "I can unilaterally lift sanctions against an enemy country who my predecessor called a member of the 'axis of evil', who has demonstrated time and again that they fund and work with terrorists, whose national motto is 'death to america, death to the jews' and who want a nuclear bomb."

and people AGREE with him.

>>It uses a word -- "treaty" -- which is pretty well understood by everyone who speaks English as a first, second, or third language.

And I just noted that EAs have been around since the beginning of the Republic. If you have a complaint about them you've had over 200 years to make it.

Obama stated earlier this year that he did his legal team did not consider this a treaty. He was going to go this alone.

Is he a scumbag who loves to twist the law? Of course. Would he use any trick to try and get his way? When hasn't he. The proscribed route for deciding whether this is a treaty or an EA is the courts. Yea, goodie.

The Senate has no ability on their own to declare this a treaty. What Obama proposed doing is a judgement of the executive branch, he wouldn't technically be breaking the law.

So when faced with those facts why wouldn't you try to get something, anything, that would get Obama to show the deal to Congress and have them review it?

Jack, you *seem* to be missing the point.

If Obama just unilaterally declared this an EA or whatever bullshit with his pen and phone, it would be easy and safe to ignore it. And it would put everything on him.

What the Senate did was say, "hey Obama, we know we can't get 67 votes to ratify your treaty (I'm sorry, executive action), but we *can* get you 34. So what we'll do is pass a bill flipping the requirement. Deal?"

And he said "okay, sounds good. Thanks for the fig leaf, dudes! Catch you on the golf course!"

So instead of Congress saying, "fine, we wash our hands of this. Go ahead and act lawlessly, there's nothing we can do about it" they said "finne, we'll go along with this and give you cover. But we need to do it in a way to trick our dumbfuck base in to thinking we didnt fold for you. We'll pull some trickery in the Senate to make sure we get your treaty approved and make sure its binding."

Oh, and Congress won't be approving shit.

What will happen is 35 Democrats will vote for it, the rest of the Senate will vote against it, then they'll go home and say "geez guys, we tried to stop it but we couldn't. Vote for us so we can stop things like this in the future!"

And if its true that 200 years of presidents have made treaties without 2/3s of the Senates approval, then they're all null and void and should be revisited in the future.

Because the President does not have the authority in the constitution to unilaterally create treaties with foreign countries. Namely because that binds future presidents and congresses with treaties that could drag us in to a war, and that were never approved of by the people. Thus the 2/3s requirement.

Nobody was going to ignore it, the Iranians would have gotten their sanctions relief and kept the centrifuges spinning. Have you noticed that we seem to have a president who with his phone and his pen ripped up our immigration laws?

You seem to think it is a forgone conclusion that Congress will pass any bullshit deal that Kerry and Obama cook up. I don't think its quite that clear and I'm willing to see if Congress can derail it by making the most problematic parts of it public.

Yes, I wish the bill had more teeth but Obama would have just vetoed it and continued on his merry way. The very worst outcome with this bill is every Republican votes against it, which they will if it is bad, and Obama gets the same bill.

It was never going to be considered a treaty so stop pretending it was and talking about the Constitution and 67 votes. That shipped sailed months ago while hardly anyone was paying attention.

What if Israel doesn't bomb Iran? At least at first. What if Israel is busy smuggling in arms, ammunition and stores to equip enough Iranians to raise hell with the Ayatollah's forces before bombing or setting off a few EMP's?

Just a thought.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at April 30, 2015 04:49 PM (St6BJ)

542 I'm willing to stipulate that the Corker bill is mostly counterproductive, because it requires 67 votes to stop the treaty instead of requiring 67 to pass it.

But how can we say that "Without the Corker bill, Obama would need 67 Senate votes to pass his treaty"? Obama wouldn't even try to submit the Iran agreement to the Senate if he needed 67 votes to pass it. He'd just implement it as an executive agreement and say that Senate approval was unnecessary.

So I would say that the Corker bill means that the Iran agreement can be stopped with 67 votes in the Senate, whereas without the Corker bill, not even 100 votes in the Senate would be enough to stop the agreement.

I'm more concerned with the dissolution of our society from within that is happening at a pretty good clip. Fast enough to make Article V all but moot at this point.

Posted by: JackStraw at April 30, 2015 04:36 PM (g1DWB)
----------

Because you don't concede to what "he" decides to "call it". Congress disagrees, calls it a "treaty", votes on it as a treaty and shoots it down. He bitches and hine "EA", and Congress says, "nah, treaty". Christ, that's POLITICS. And if necessary, you take it to the courts. Perhaps an injunction, maybe, in the interim? Sure the courts are lousy with lefties, and iran keeps on a pluggin' to da bomb. But so what? You STILL fight his action, you don't roll over for it. Your position is begging for scraps from his plate, which you still won't get - but he does appreciate the begging.

By cratering this bullshit deal and going the other direction with crushing sanctions and demands that Iran stop sponsoring terrorism which is exactly what was being pushed in Congress. That was the whole reason for Netanyahu's speech to Congress.

The odds are probably not in our favor but some chance is better than no chance which is what Obama was threatening.

The Intel community thinks Iran could acquire capabilities in three months, congress debating the "bill" would at least leave the current sanctions in place for the duration of the debate.

That a president can unilaterally lift the sanctions and usurp the will of congress probably falls under the protection of the non ruling of the Supreme Court excuse book- the old political question tap dance.

597 " it would be easy and safe to ignore it."

*ctrl-f 'Security Council'*

*Not found*

Here's the point:

1. American sanctions on Iran aren't the important ones. The UN ones are. We didn't do much business with Iran anyway. Restricting Europe, Russia, and China from doing it was always the bigger deal. Bush worked his ass off to get them to agree to THAT much.

2. Without the Corker Bill, Obama would claim this is an EA- and then, would go to the Security Council, and get them to revoke the sanctions. And there's no politically viable way to stop him. Someone would raise the motion, even if we physically barred the US representative from getting in the door. Unless we somehow compelled Obama to veto the resolution, it would pass.

3. The Security Council will revoke the sanctions if any deal is reached.

4. Once revoked, they can't be imposed again, because Russia and China, despite Obama's dick-waving about snap-back.

5. Once gone from the Security Council, the sanctions are gone for good. We can impose all the sanctions we like unilaterally but it will have no impact.

6. So the Republican would get elected, revoke the EA, and the US would be alone in imposing sanctions. Iran would lose very little and claim we violated the deal so they would throw out the inspectors with a pretense rather than without a pretense (which makes it much harder for us to declare war on them, in the screwed-up world the Europeans like to live in.)

7. Therefore, the Corker Bill- although it sucks- is the only chance we have of keeping sanctions in place.

Corker said it himself- that what mattered was stopping the president from reaching the U.N. with this deal. He can bypass congress if they stand still, because they're not united enough to force him back.

Time is too limited to build a consensus to do anything more than the Corker bill- it would require 67% of the vote, and Corker was barely able to get them to agree to his bill.

Either way, because he's not submitting it as a treaty, the next president can STILL undo it- but by that point, it's too late. The deal can't be undone unilaterally once done.

But we have small chance to PREVENT it from ever being done with the Corker bill- versus a ZERO percent chance to prevent it from being done.

Can Obama still bypass Congress and go to the U.N. if Congress disapproves the Corker bill?

Yes. But there's a chance he won't do that- because it would destroy the Democratic Party, particularly Hillary, and even democrats would begin considering impeachment at that point. It would produce a backlash against the U.N., and Democrats know how much they need the U.N. if they want to keep backdooring their agenda into place.

Supporting the Corker bill guarantees we have at least a chance to win the war here, and gives us a few battles we're almost sure to win on the path to a possible victory in stopping the Iran deal.

Oppossing the Corker bill guarantees a loss in the war to stop the Iran deal, because Obama in the Imperial Presidency, holds all the cards.

Constitutionally, he shouldn't, but we don't have the time to build a consensus or the legal standing to hold him accountable for it.

Understood, but economic growth from sanctions relief would eclipse that very quickly.

In 2000 and in non-oil-boom years, they grew at about 5% per year; right now they're shrinking at 6% per year.

GDP right now is 389 billion, rounded. Even ignoring their GDP shrinking right now, if it goes from 0-5%, the $50 billion they WOULD get from us gets outmatched in 3 years by the economic growth from sanctions relief.

Keeping the sanctions in place is the big part. The money is big, yes. It's massive for them, yes, but nowhere NEAR as big as the sanctions. It's the difference between the Hiroshima bomb and a hydrogen bomb; a complete difference in scope and scale.

lick spittle.

This is all absurd anyway that we are at this moment.

605 "Because if they had the least respect for us, they'd explain their reasons for disagreeing with us, rather than tricking us, yet again, like we're a pack of unruly Retarded Children who must be tricked into going to the doctor."

Actually, we just like lying to you peasants, and you are so fun - and easy - to trick.

An earlier commenter asked, and it still has not been answered:
Why is AIPAC supporting this?
My understanding is that something is better than nothing. At least, this would give Congress a chance to comment, and then Obama would be forced to veto Congress.
The alternative is not Congress doing nothing and thereby blocking Obama. The alternative is Congress doing nothing and then Obama saying this is not a treaty and then doing whatever the heck he pleases.
If Obama were a president that would respect this as a treaty, the argument works. But he is not that president.

When he says he does, and goes to the UN security council and passes the deal there, destroying the international sanctions that are doing 95% of the damage to Iran's economy right now, who's going to stop him, and how?

Posted by: Zack at April 30, 2015 06:31 PM (Qerbt)

609 The only answer we have right now is 'the corker bill'. It sucks, it's a bad option, we shouldn't be forced into settling for that little and he's way out of line, yes. But the will to stop him doesn't exist right now in the country and we don't have time to build it before Iran gets irrevocably on the path to the bomb.

He's already given them about $9 billion since 2013 so the idea that he can't or won't unilaterally release frozen assets is just wrong.

Posted by: JackStraw at April 30, 2015 06:35 PM (g1DWB)

611 "He's already given them about $9 billion since 2013 so the idea that he can't or won't unilaterally release frozen assets is just wrong. "

The frozen assets are irrelevant.

$50 billion would be eclipsed by the economic growth from the release of the international sanctions very quickly.

Pre the current bush-imposed sanctions, Iran's economy grew at ~5% per year. Right now it's shrinking at 6% per year.

Even ignoring the shrinkage currently, going from 0 to 5% means at 389 billion GDP they'll earn $50 billion from THAT in 3 years; and ~$200 billion over 10 years.

The sanctions matter a LOT more than the frozen assets.

He might be able to release the assets unilaterally, but he can't go to the U.N. unless a deal is struck and he can (at least temporarily) waive sanctions. If he can't even temporarily waive sanctions (because Congress has stopped him) then he can't declare the deal complete and struck and get the sanctions lifted.

He COULD go to the U.N. unilaterally, but as I said above, that'd destroy the credibility and tolerance of the U.N. in the U.S., and the Dems know they need that for backdooring in their pet projects.

Not really. They were part of an easing of certain sanctions.

Israel could stop the Corker bill any time through AIPAC, right? The fact that they aren't says something. If AIPAC went against it, the Corker bill would be done.
If Obama just announced one day that sanctions are off, would/could the Repubs do anything?
"Doesn't count" they would say to an empty room because the media is in the bag for Obama.
Soft diplomacy is the all the right actually has, since they aren't willing to shut down the government.
I think the right needs to admit total and utter defeat. From this will flow actual power for the first time.
How? Freed from any notions that they hold partial power, they can speak the black truths on topics such as race, gender, demographic trends and much else, destroying American optimism and moving the Overton window sharply. Black pessimism is the starting point. From there moderate Democrats themselves will implement conservative policies. Democrat mayors cracked down on crime in the 1990s as their cities lay in ruins.
Nigel Farage has been arguably more powerful in the UK than any conservative on the right in America, even though Nigel Farage has no official power.

615 "Not really. They were part of an easing of certain sanctions"

I meant, they don't matter in the long run. What matters is: if you stop the waiving of the sanctions, you stop the end of the international sanctions. If you stop the end of the international sanctions, you kill the deal. Releasing assets is bundled in with waiving sanctions, but it doesn't matter on its own; even if he did it individually, it wouldn't put the deal forward. All of the other sanctions have to be waived to kill the international sanctions. And releasing the assets doesn't help or stop him doing that.

621 "The Republicans can advance a false narrative just as easily as the
left. "Akin was a Tea Party candidate" is as accurate as "Hand's Up,

Akin was the fault of Anti-Establishments who insisted that he could still win after he opened his mouth but was stabbed in the back by the Establishment. You better support him!, they cried, while smarter people saw the trainwreck. You know, cause Hill to Die On or something. They're the same people who insist that O'Donnell was stabbed in the back, (and hey, her failed candidacy actually helped others somehow!)

Seriously can't wait until the New Party forms. It'll be pretty funny
when old habits start accusing people of being Establishment in a newly
created party.

I don't even know why we're talking about old Tea Party vs Establishment Republicans thing anymore. Who are these Tea Party Republicans we should support? Apparently no one, so whatever. Leadership sucks but I'm not hearing any up-and-comer who's shaking things up.
