US Growth Slows to 0.2% Annualized GDP Growth, Also Known as "Recessionary Nongrowth"

A negative growth rate is actually the definition of a recession, of course, but these things often have to first cross an almost-zero threshold before plunging officially into negative territory.

Via @comradearthur -- Obama's Miracle Economy continues to astound.

The U.S. economy ground nearly to a halt in the first three months of the year, according to government data released Wednesday morning, as exports plunged and severe winter weather helped keep consumers indoors.

The gross domestic product grew between January and March at an annualized rate of 0.2 percent, the U.S. Commerce Department said, adding to the picture of an economy braking sharply after accelerating for much of last year. The pace fell well shy of the 1 percent mark anticipated by analysts and marked the weakest quarter in a year.

The economy had expanded at a rate of 2.2 percent in the final three months of 2014 and at a rate of 2.4 percent for the year.

Which is itself a horrible rate of "growth."

But Obama declared victory over one quarter of good growth (I think the 2nd quarter 2014), and the media of course declared him officially "Back."

Consumer confidence -- which is far too high, thanks to media cheerleading -- already took a tumble after recent disappointing job growth, and will undoubtedly fall further still now that the economy is in a pre-recessionary funk.

The WaPo's Chico Harlan also casts doubt on Obama's favorite excuse for a terrible economy -- that it's all the weather.

To be sure, the weather in some parts of the country between January and March was really bad. Boston got crushed by snow. So did Chicago. In the Northeast, this was the coldest winter in 30 years.

But the tie between weather and economic performance is often overstated, according to the small number of experts who’ve searched for a correlation. In fact, the data shows that only a few slices of the economy -- manufacturing and construction, namely --can be hurt by a brutal winter. Retail sales, to a much lesser extent, can also feel a pinch. But weather alone won’t bring a humming economy to a halt....

In a paper released recently by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, two researchers concluded that the effect of weather "is not very large." The effect, they added, is certainly not large enough to explain what happened a year ago, when a 2.2 percent contraction in the quarter lasting from January through March coincided with a particularly brutal winter.

Yes, remember that winter? It was actually a lot like this one. An Artic cold front froze much of the country, cancelling flights, closing schools and leading to a series of record lows. Initially, analysts were careful about drawing a connection to the economy; the slowdown was "in part" related to weather, the Federal Reserve said. But as the months passed, and the U.S. economy rebounded during the spring and summer, the narrative changed. It became "folk wisdom" that the winter storms led almost directly to the contraction, the Chicago Fed researchers wrote.

Gee, I wonder how it became "folk wisdom." Maybe because virtually every media voice was echoing Obama's spin.

I definitely recommend this piece. I do not think I've read a single other piece in the media debunking the constant "It unexpectedly snowed in winter" excuse from this Administration and its media Spirit Squad.

Yes - 4 Dodgers games, though all were made up with doubleheaders. The Dodgers tried to get at least the 3-game Expos series played in San Diego as part of a doubleheader series with the Padres, but that fell through.

The NBA also moved both the Lakers' Game 4 playoff (to Las Vegas) and the Clippers' Game 4 playoff (to Anaheim).

yeah, they'll admit that on january 21, 2017, depending on who wins.

If it's a republican, then his election caused the recession /depression retroactively back to '09.

and like I've pointed out before, if gdp = government spending + consumer spending + business investment (yes, simplified formula, I know), what are we really measuring when government spending goes up by $1 Trillion and we're pumping $80 billion a month in federal reserve "easing" in to the economy?

As in, you can have GDP growth while the private sector is being killed as long as you pump up the I and G to make up for the lost C (consumer spending).

And GDP is a stupid way to measure economic health anyways. Spending does not equal growth or health. It just equals spending. Loose correlation between GDP and economic "health"

Nothing. I mean, we all see the warning signs, but no one has any idea on how long we can play the print the money, pass the debt along game before it implodes. Depressing thought: maybe decades.

Anyways, Euro debt has been trading at negative interest rates, which has a lot of people worried. Because that means the "smart money" would rather lose money by buying German bonds at -1% interest then risk their money by investing in the "real" economy.

No idea if that'll end up being a big deal or not. Hard to say.

Anyone who says they can predict anything economically is lying -- we're talking about interactions of billions of people. People are unpredictable. Events are unpredictable. Shit sometimes just happens. And sometimes when you think shit will happen, it doesn't.

Actually, this is expected by the experts to keep the overnight interest rates down in the 0.00%-0.25% until at least September now that June appears to be out of the question.

Personally, interest rates won't rise until and unless a non-DemocRAT is elected President because the primary reason for low interest rates is to keep the cost of borrowing $1 trillion/year down for the federal government.

I too did not read the article, but from what I've seen around the interwebz, I think this is the first draft.

So it will be adjusted down 2 or 3 more times before we get the final (most likely negative) number. But they won't report THAT until the next quarters GDP is out (and is positive). Even if that needs to be revised down later.

They play this game every report.

118 Anyone who says they can predict anything economically is lying -- we're talking about interactions of billions of people. People are unpredictable. Events are unpredictable. Shit sometimes just happens. And sometimes when you think shit will happen, it doesn't.

That's definitely something to keep an eye on. But it's not like there's another, obvious "reserve" currency out there an available.

What some people are worried about is that China, Russia, and the other BRICs have begun trading with each other and other trading partners in *their own currencies* instead of trading in USDs.

Which is really the beginning of the unraveling of the Bretton woods agreement.

I think if the USD and oil ever get seperated from each other, we'll see the rest of our currency house of cards collapse fairly quickly.

wage growth hasnt kept up with "economic growth" (aka gdp growth) in decades.

Some of that can be explained by illegal immigration... and outsourcing... and other policy issues.

But I'd argue monetary and fiscal policy have been used to hide decades of stagnation in the economy, and "wage growth" is more reflective of our economic health then "GDP growth" is.

Why do you think they have to keep creating bubbles? Tech bubbles, real estate bubbles, "student loan" bubbles, etc. etc. etc. They need to show SOME private sector "growth" even if it later is revealed to not have been real growth.

Herself was drugged out of her mind last night which was kinda funny. They've already had her up and walking down the hall twice yesterday because we live in an age of miracles.

I haven't been by there today because, for some reason I do not comprehend, I'm a sucker who is working. I'll go by after work.

Today's adventure in parental caretaking was getting in a huge fight this morning with my father as to whether he should drive himself to the hospital to see her, which, hell, no, he shouldn't and I won and winning entailed me feeling like a huge bitch because way to take away my dad's independence.

That was followed by calling around noon to see if he was home or if the friends taking him to the hospital had been by yet and he was and they hadn't and he took the dog out so I didn't have to run back to do that and then I asked him something about dinner and he answered and then he hung up on me. I was all okay so then we'll, Dad, Dad, Dad, omg he hung up on me!

So going to start shooting heroin into my eyeball. So am.

Well, in Keynes' defense, even he wasn't THIS retarded.

When he was theorizing, the Brits (and us) were still on a gold standard. So the idea was to save money in "good years" (has he ever met a fucking politician?!) to even out the business cycle in the "bad years", and that the KEY to economic growth is by stimulating aggregate demand.

Which, fine, I mean on paper it sort of sounds good.

But
a) it's a miserable failure, for reasons that Hayek and Friedman and Sowell and dozens of other economists have explained
b) our government has not even followed Keynes theory at all. They liked the "doesnt matter what government spends on, as long as they boost agg demand with it" part, and just ignored the rest.

243 Transfer from the morning thread:

Keep in mind also that GDP is about 3.5% higher than it would have been
reported prior to the fall of 2013 because they changed how GDP is
measured in some pretty dodgy ways... counting R and D spending as a direct
contributor to GDP, for instance, rather than an intermediate factor of
production as it had always been counted. Also counting government promises to pay pensions instead of just counting pension payments that were actually made (and we can ask pensioners in Detroit if those two are anywhere close to the same thing). So that GDP figure should be a little worse than -3% if they were honestly reporting.

265 I think young people are might sick of the whole dynasty thing

one college kid joked that Jeb is only getting to run for President because he is a "legacy" (frat humor)

I dont think eith Jeb or Hillary will be the next president

and one thing all young people hate is being told what to do

they are sick of the campus harpies and the do goodniks telling everyone how to think and behave

I know youg people do not vote, and I dont think they will come out for Hillary like they did for the JEF. She only stimulates the old biddy vote

I think this election is wide open

The UAW had a plurality stake in GM once the US Treasury started liquidating their stake. It was all part of the deal to give the UAW an 80% profit from driving GM into bankruptcy.

Let's take a step back. Why is the view that marriage is (no "should be" about it) between a man and a woman somehow "horrible?"

You know what a "horrible" view of marriage is? That it's some "social construct" that man just made up. I can think of only a few of the ramifications of that, and none of them are good.

You know what a "horrible" view of marriage is? That women are the literal property of their husbands.

You know what a "horrible" view of marriage is? That girls should be handed out to well-connected rich (mostly old) men as political favors.

The issue was that the holders of GM's (old GM, before the fedgov got involved) bonds ended up having to take pennies on the dollar for their bonds (which are supposed to be secured debt, first priority in bankruptcy court) while union pension funds didn't have to take a hair cut at all, even though they are nowhere near the top of creditors who should get paid.

Obama restructured all of that on his own "to avoid bankruptcy" then after his preferred constituencies got all set up, he fired GMs CEO and GM filed bankruptcy anyways to discharge bad debt.

but if they had gone to bankruptcy court instead of to DC, the union pensions would have been fucked, but the bond holders would have been made whole.

I'll try to explain it, Allen. You see, if you, I, and everyone else in the universe does not cater to the insecurities, hang-ups, emotional discordances, and general neuroses of a near-vanishingly-small segment of the population then it means that we are all evil, mean, nasty hate-filled bigots who should be punished and chastised using the full-force of the law to do so. 339 The problem is that OBama is using the same stupid strategy that FDR used during the recession in the 20s. Which he then turned into a decades long depression that was only stopped by WWII and even that is debatable.

You can not control the economy by tax and spend. It takes the most productive thing out of the economy and throws it into an inflationary fire.

And guess what, the results are the same. The only difference is unemployment and welfare which is keeping people out of the soup lines and apple sales. But that can not last forever.

Brought Sarah Frances home from the hospital after three days in the NICU due to meconium (sp) aspiration that had her having a tough time getting the necessary oxygen abosorption in her lungs. Tough on Mom and Dad, but she's home, happy and sleeping pretty much all of the time which is exactly what her big sister did for two weeks...and then hasn't slept through a night since.

Thanks for all the thought and prayers...been a helluva year so far with daughters and hospitals and have hopefully had my fill of them.

You could see it dawning on the Baltimore locals - that this was being instigated and escalated by the professional activists from out of town.

Wonder how many blue cities will go up in flames before the Left decides they've had enough of these once reliable activist agitators - the Commies, the self-appointed race leaders, the MSM hungry to dial it up to "11",etc. - coming in and sh%tting all over their cities and then moving on. No better than locusts.

Certainly saw it w/Carol Costello yesterday, who could not take her own city burning. She kept saying "I have a house here! This is not what this city is about!". Guess it's cutting too close this time, huh Carol?

I'd argue that WWII did nothing to end the depression.

We simply went in to super austerity mode for civilians (rationing food, rubber, oil, etc), destroyed a ton of wealth (tanks, ammo, planes, bombs, etc) then had a decade of pent up demand in the US and world wide in the post WWII environment.

Then through a confluence of events -- rapidly paying off govt debt, lowering deficits, PLUS of course the fact that we were the sole industrial powerhouse in the world whose factories werent destroyed in the war...

And of course, Bretton Woods. That was a big one that people usually ignore. Making the USD the reserve currency had a lot to do with our economic growth in the '50s.

All levels of government would be fucked.

If 10% (using all approximate numbers here) of our budget goes to paying interest on the debt when most of our debt being issued is short term with sub 1% yields, what happens when we have to issue long term debt at 5% yields (historically normal rate) or up to 20% yields (Jimmy Carter rate) ?

It would crowd out EVERYTHING else. Just servicing the debt, mind you, not paying it down at all.

And of course, we would have to borrow even more to pay for our spending programs.

Thus, debt spiral.

433 MLB players can hit a 95 mph fastball with 50,000 people screaming, and golf players can't hit a stationary ball without total fucking silence.

434 Monday night in the height of the fires / looting / etc a bunch of men in suits and ties came out and stood between the yutes and the police.
-----------
There is also a picture of three men in suits standing next to a well dressed female protester preparing to throw something at police. The men in suits make no effort to stop the woman. They don't knock the projectile out of her hand, they don't grab her arm, they don't embrace her in loving kindness to prevent her from committing a crime. They stand there, smiling, watching, posing for the photographer.

462 And I agree: every single quarter report by the Obama administration has after a few weeks been adjusted downward. If that happens with this quarter, we're seeing the first report of retraction. I'd say unemployment will probably go up, but if it does, we'll likely never hear about it.

Right. Not so long ago, there were some people on opposite sides of the world who smarmed wise shit real similar. One of them folded before the big event, didn't matter, their cities still looked like a '79 truck stop ashtray.
