If I understand correctly -- and I'm prepared to be corrected -- there was a period of several hours when the cops were basically off the streets. I'm guessing they were ordered to give a protest room to run and the looters just hijacked everything and started the burning.

In first the Lawyers, THEN the Artists news:

Michael Ondaatje, Francine Prose and at least four other writers have withdrawn from next month's PEN American Center gala, citing objections to the literary and human rights organization's honoring the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. According to PEN, the other hosts who decided not to attend were Teju Cole, Rachel Kushner, Taiye Selasi and Peter Carey.

PEN announced Sunday that the writers were upset by Charlie Hebdo's portrayals of Muslims and "the disenfranchised generally." The Paris-based magazine, where 12 people were killed in a January attack at its offices, is to receive a Freedom of Expression Courage Award at the May 5 event in Manhattan. Much of the literary community rallied behind Charlie Hebdo after the shootings, but some have expressed unhappiness with its scathing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad and other Muslims.

77 Widespread misunderstanding of the fluoride rule. The standard dose remains unchanged. In the original Order, there was a presumption that northerners drank less water (!), and so northern cities were to put in quite a bit more. Now (well for 40 years) that all toothpaste has fluoride, that maximum has been altered.

I followed the original fluoride debate rather closely (I had drawn the short straw in a school assignment). The antis were completely right, and got Moron'ed into submission by mockery of the John Birch Society, who, of course, claimed it was a communist plot. I have come to believe that they were right, too.

The "research" on fluoride consisted almost completely of correlation studies of tooth decay among tribes whose native groundwater was high in natural fluoride. The concurrent incidence of several cancers was conveniently overlooked. And now, we have the CDC. So everything will be fine. Trust them on this.

Noop.

According to my dentist friend (and some reading on my own- nutty green sister, don't ask)

Not to get too technical but consuming F- in your drinking water allows the fluoride to be incorporated throughout the substance of your teeth and bones.

Hydroxyapatite becomes fluorohydroxyapatite which is more resistant to acid attack and harder.

Actually, the consumption(i.e.. actual eating of) of toothpaste by babies and young kids is what causes
most of the "fluorosis"(white spots on teeth).

In essence they over fluoride themselves or their parents do by buying adult toothpaste for toddlers.

Baby toothpaste has no fluoride or reduced fluoride for this very reason.

And the white spots on teeth are less a problem than rampant decay. At least in my opinion. Also, "With favor will you encompass us, as with a shield" also in nearly-incomprehensible Latinate forms, which Gov will bear before him to-day.

191 So the race riots in Ferguson were totes justified according to the DOJ, as the city council and the popos were mostly of the white variety. Ya know, it was clear any person of color couldn't get a fair shake under that system.

Now, let's see, the mayor and chief of popos are black, I imagine the city council is mostly black (a quick count of a photo shows that 8 out of 15 are black, including the CC preezy), and so it must be the makeup of the police force...and so it is:

Take the example of Baltimore. This shows that 28 percent of the city population is white, while 46 percent of the police officers working in the city are white, according to Census data.

I'm being sort of serious here; this is what they will hang the racial disparity hat on.

I said it yesterday: the way to stop these riots (not just in Baltimore, either) is for the citizenry to arm up and stop them.

The police won't - at least, not until way more damage has been done - and the National Guard really doesn't have the training (well, if it comes to killing & breaking I guess they do, but not so much the arresting and calming).

If the Government can't or won't step in to protect the citizens of Baltimore, the citizens of Baltimore must step in to protect themselves.

When I was at the range yesterday morning, one of the employees had told me that they were told that directly by a Baltimore City police officer from Western District who was a friend of theirs.

Between that, and the reports of the Mayors words concerning room to destroy, I went from the supporter that I was on the threads the other evening to the complete opposite side of the scale.
Any respect that I held for her perceived ability to control the situation went out the window when I heard that she had traded citizen security and safety for not riling up the protestors.

428 Insty has a fairly long post (for him)-

that concludes the Supreme Court is about to bless gay marriage because "marriage is between two people" (not one man, one woman)

and give that reasoning the door will be thrown open for any other "two people marriages" (cousins, child/adult, etc)

And extrapolating from that he suggests polygamy will be next because -why is marriage just between two people?

So, the strongest, oldest institution with the longest, most successful record for protecting mothers and children is about to be flushed down the toilet-

by nine unelected men and women.

Yay?

429 292 I'm increasingly amused by all these black liberal commentators who keep insisting that the solution to all of this is jobs while they have done nothing for the last 50 years but support policies that drove those jobs away. And they have no idea.

Give them all jobs.

Half of them will fail to show up on day one.

Half of the remainder will be fired by the end of a week.

Half of the remainder will be fired by the end of the second week.

430 Obama is working both sides of this riot. In public he is calling for 'restraint' which is an insult to the police, and a code word for the rioters to blame the police for provoking the violence. And it give Obama the excuse to investigate the local police for civil rights violations.

In private he is sending DOJ lawyers and community back channel operators to make contact with local leaders to demonstrate the impotence of the local police non violently. (and now I can't find the article) Where local men 'ministers' walked arm in arm toward police lines, knelt in prayer, then again advanced toward the police to stand and challenge the police authority.

and the super secret back channel operators are telling the gangs to 'purge'.

This gives Obama leverage to take over the local political machine, and threaten anyone else who might want to distance themselves from Obama's presidential legacy or try to cozy up to a political rival of Obama's.

Urban gangs don't go to war against the police without someone telling them to do so. In Ferguson it was Michael Brown's father after the Brown family had been in contact with Obama's DOJ investigators.

The 10th amendment is, like, a hundred years old and moldy as hell. No one pays any attention to it.

432 CNN just had whichever fat slug is chairman of the black cong caucus on and he said Baltimore was a poverty problem, and the republicans should hold hearings. As I recall, the government started throwing money at 'poverty' in 1965. Seems 'poverty' has only increased and the amount of money thrown at it has only increased. Can you just imagine what this country (and Baltimore) would be like if that money had been used wisely instead of wasted? On like, say, education? When I was in high school in 1965, black folks demanded their children get an education so they could get a good job and better life. Now a young black who wants an education is criticized for acting 'white'. Baltimore is the perfect place for the parable of the ambitious crab being pulled back in the basket by the others.

It's, like, even older. Maybe 150.

434 There was a Garfield cartoon in which Jon said, "That hamburger is mine!" Garfield replied, "Let's see if you want it after I lick it and shed on it and sit on it". Jon replied, "you win, it's yours".

It seems Baltimore is like that hamburger. Any law abiding citizens with families should just evacuate.

437 I feel sorry for the normal citizens of Baltimore and don't want to see anyone get hurt, but due to the immense amount of liberal comments I see on facebook today regarding the protestors right to turn violent, I would be thrilled to see the riots and looting proceed unabated so these morons can feel extra special today. Space to destroy, indeed. Burn it to the ground.

Absolutely clueless.

I wish someone would ask them:
Let's say you had $1,000,000 to invest in "jobs" in Baltimore. What business would you start? And no, a jobs-training program doesn't count.

Because the truth is, the jobs they are qualified for are the jobs they are doing. Ambition is part of your job qualifications and . . . it isn't measured by cutting fire hoses and looting liquor stores.

439 Five journalists got robbed and beaten covering The Purge. You know they were down with the man before reality kicked their ass. A couple even complained the cops just stood there, you know, giving the rioters their space.
