Overnight Open Thread (4/27/15) [tmi3rd]

Hi guys. Me again, and Maet should be back from his assignment somewhere around the end of next week.

If you can believe this, I still have stuff I didn't use from last night, so let's dive right in...

More below the fold.

As some of you know, I have a news background as well, having worked for NBC, CBS, and CNN. I bring this up because one of my former general managers (who is a relatively religious man for a liberal) made a remark in passing that he felt that people were naturally good, and didn't do bad things unless steered towards doing so. As such, he didn't feel that the 21st-century man needed the guidance of religion.

I think he got that totally wrong. Much as I know that some of you aren't Heinlein fans, I've got to quote Starship Troopers again...

"Young lady, the tragic wrongness of what those well-meaning people did, contrasted with what they thought they were doing, goes very deep. They had no scientifc theory of morals. They did have a theory of morals and they tried to live by it (I should not have sneered at their motives), but their theory was wrong -- half of it fuzzy-headed wishful thinking, half of it rationalized charlatanry. The more earnest they were, the farther it led them astray. You see, they assumed that Man had a moral instinct."

"Sir? I thought -- But he does! I have."

"No, my dear, you have a cultivated conscience, a most carefully trained one. Man has no moral instinct. He is not born with moral sense. You were not born with it, I was not -- and a puppy has none. We acquire moral sense, when we do, through training, experience, and hard sweat of the mind. These unfortunate juvenile criminals were born with none, even as you and I, and they had no chance to acquire any; their experiences did not permit it. What is 'moral sense'? It is an elaboration of the instinct to survive. The instinct to survive is human nature itself, and every aspect of our personalities derives from it. Anything that conflicts with the survival instinct acts sooner or later to eliminate the individual and thereby fails to show up in future generations. This truth is mathematically demonstrable, everywhere verifiable; it is the single eternal imperative controlling everything we do.

"But the instinct to survive," he had gone on, "can be cultivated into motivations more subtle and much more complex than the blind, brute urge of the individual to stay alive. Young lady, what you miscalled your 'moral instinct' was the instilling in you by your elders of the truth that survival can have stronger imperatives than that of your own personal survival. Survival of your family, for example. Of your children, when you have them. Of your nation, if you struggle that high up the scale. And so on up. A scientifically verifiable theory of morals must be rooted in the individual's instinct to survive -- and nowhere else! -- and must correctly describe the hierarchy of survival, note the motivations at each level, and resolve all conflicts.

"We have such a theory now; we can solve any moral problem, on any level. Self-interest, love of family, duty to country, responsibility toward the human race -- we are even developing an exact ethic for extra-human relations. But all moral problems can be illustrated by one misquotation: 'Greater love hath no man than a mother cat dying to defend her kittens.' Once you understand the problem facing that cat and how she solved it, you will then be ready to examine yourself and learn how high up the moral ladder you are capable of climbing.

"These juvenile criminals hit a low level. Born with only the instinct for survival, the highest morality they achieved was a shaky loyalty to a peer group, a street gang. But the do-gooders attempted to 'appeal to their better natures,' to 'reach them,' to 'spark their moral sense.' Tosh! They had no 'better natures'; experience taught them that what they were doing was the way to survive. The puppy never got his spanking; therefore what he did with pleasure and success must be 'moral.'

"The basis of all morality is duty, a concept with the same relation to group that self-interest has to individual. Nobody preached duty to these kids in a way they could understand -- that is, with a spanking. But the society they were in told them endlessly about their 'rights.'

"The results should have been predictable, since a human being has no natural rights of any nature."

Much as today's left would like to discard religion as a worthless anachronism, Christianity (and its predecessor Judaism) are clearly stated as the foundation on which our Founding Fathers built the Constitution. While taking great pains to not have the state choose a religion, its importance was carefully underscored in the discussions of its framing and in the Bill of Rights.

While I admire my general manager very much- think of his leanings as vaguely like that of a Kirsten Powers, but not nearly as nice to look at- his understandings of the underpinnings of our society are flawed indeed. Given the fact that he had a ringside seat to the complete disintegration of societal order that we saw during Hurricane Katrina, I consider this a most egregious error on his part.

On to the fun stuff. I like Grim Reaper, but this is too funny to pass up...

Moving on... what the actual fuck is this?!

Remember your loved one – by putting their ashes in a dildo

Explaining his bizarre invention, Mr Sturkenboom said: ‘After a passing, the missing of intimacy with that person is only one aspect of the pain and grief.

‘This forms the base for 21 Grams. The urn offers the possibility to conserve 21 grams of ashes of the deceased and displays an immortal desire.’

He continued: ‘I sometimes help an elderly lady with her groceries and she has an urn standing near the window with the remains of her husband.

‘She always speaks with so much love about him but the jar he was in didn’t reflect that at all.

‘In that same period I read an article about widows, taboos and sex and intimacy and then I thought to myself “can I combine these themes and make an object that is about love and missing and intimacy?”‘

The box, called 21 Grams – said to be the weight of the human soul – was his answer.

Tonight's Musical Selection

This is one of the most criminally overlooked songs by Faith No More. Off the same album as "Epic", it shows off one of my bass heroes- Bill Gould- in an exquisite light. The thing I love about his sound on this is that it's almost saxophone-esque... it's an Aria Integra bass through an Ibanez Tube Screamer and a Peavey bass head (the model escapes me at the moment).

So, this month, five years ago, my son, tmi4th was born. I live-blogged it on the ONT and on Facebook,
and I put this up to honor him and to honor you, my Moron friends.

I don't get into the comments as much these days, but it's never escaped me that the Moron Nation are very much my family, and you're all very special to me. I thank you for that- everywhere we've moved, a Moron has waited to welcome us, and that's truly priceless.

I leave you with puppies playing with babies. Have a good night!

36 When people say we don't need religious superstition to keep us 'moral' it's because they assume the enlightened peace and tranquility we live under is the natural consequence of peaceful people.

When you point out history, they dismiss all of that saying that was back in olden times and we are smarter, wiser, better educated now.

and the riots in Baltimore are the natural consequence of an oppressive police presence.

We don't need religion, we don't need police, we don't need armies, and we don't need nukes because we are good people.

More to the point organized religion is what allowed civilization above that of the level of a tribe. Of course some religions, like the two you mention, form a more just society then others...high Moe!

Of course to be clear liberals sort of recognize this. For as much as they talk about destroying organized religion what they really spend their time on is attempting to replace Christianity as the basis of our society - look at socialism or environmentalism as particular examples.

Baltimore deserves everything happening to it.
Black leadership isn't.
Most of those 'youths' are not.
The mayor is one of those people that should never have risen to a position she's in now but did.

Sadly, I don't give a damn because I know it will not affect me or happen where I live. People here still have a semblance of honor and dignity and would not allow that to happen.

103 Man (men and women) have a physical and meta-physical life.

The physical is eat, sleep, work, screw, have fun, etc.

The meta-physical (or spiritual) is just as important (maybe more so) but is not cultivated as much any more.

What Colonel DuBois was talking about in his monologue from "Starship Troopers" above was the fundamental lack of any meta-physical part of the broken children in gangs and in the street. They don't know any better because they were never taught or spoken to in that manner when they were impressionable children. When they're 16 or 17, it's just about too late. Their thought patterns and behavior are pretty much formed.

Without some kind of moral training or guidance taught as children, they have no sense of themselves as anything else but a piece of meat on the rampage. And that was the training principle of the Shutzstaffel (SS) of the Third Reich. They tried to ERASE the moral/spiritual part of the men in the SS, to turn them into reflexively cruel brutes.

It can be done.

When people say we don't need religious superstition to keep us 'moral'
it's because they assume the enlightened peace and tranquility we live
under is the natural consequence of peaceful people.

When you point out history, they dismiss all of that saying that was
back in olden times and we are smarter, wiser, better educated now.

and the riots in Baltimore are the natural consequence of an oppressive police presence.

We don't need religion, we don't need police, we don't need armies, and we don't need nukes because we are good people.

122 Modern masters of science are much impressed with the need of beginning all inquiry with a fact. The ancient masters of religion were quite equally impressed with that necessity. They began with the fact of sin--a fact as practical as potatoes. Whether or no man could be washed in miraculous waters, there was no doubt at any rate that he wanted washing. But certain religious leaders in London, not mere materialists, have begun in our day not to deny the highly disputable water, but to deny the indisputable dirt. Certain new theologians dispute original sin, which is the only part of Christian theology which can really be proved. -- G.K. Chesterton

Beat-up little seagull

On a marble stair

Tryin' to find the ocean

Lookin' everywhere

Hard times in the city

In a hard town by the sea

Ain't nowhere to run to

There ain't nothin' here for free

Hooker on the corner

Waitin' for a train

Drunk lyin' on the sidewalk

Sleepin' in the rain

And they hide their faces

And they hide their eyes

'Cause the city's dyin'

And they don't know why

Oh, Baltimore

Man, it's hard just to live

Oh, Baltimore

Man, it's hard just to live, just to live

Get my sister Sandy

And my little brother Ray

Buy a big old wagon

Gonna haul us all away

Livin' in the country

Where the mountain's high

Never comin' back here

'Til the day I die

Oh, Baltimore

Man, it's hard just to live

Oh, Baltimore

Man, it's hard just to live, just to live

I'm in touch with a worldwide purveyor of exotic hardwoods, in the custom gunstocking world. Located just North of Houston.

I'll get a copy of his business card, and send it back to you as an email attachment.

Odds are, he'll want to actually go there, and have the tree felled and sectioned to his specifications. One wrong cut can shatter the value to the stockmakers. Cut the right way, the blanks alone can be worth thousands.

And that's the world he works in. Got a $65,000 Beretta SO-5? He's where you go to get it custom re-stocked.

I've introduced him to a customer with exactly that gun. After over 500k recorded rounds fired, it's split the wood at the wrist. Being a pure sidelock, it's a complicated bit of inletting.

Dose the cakes with LSD???

If you have a family, and you have a business that supports that family, and a couple of idiots came in with a political stunt to bankrupt you and ensure your children grew up under hardship.....how could you compare their misadventure with your kids' future?

I'm just noting that you cannot create existential threats without blowback. If the "damages" from having to find another baker were limited to a $20 ticket to the local authorities, with NOTHING going to the aggrieved, there wouldn't be an issue.

When paid agitators are sent to a city to create civil unrest, when legitimate businesses are looted and burned to the ground, when innocent people are attacked for no other reason than they are in the wrong place at the right time. Libs and Livs can make a thousand excuses for this behavior even when they themselves are the absolute root cause of this behavior. The country is devolving and any society that succumbs to mob rule is doomed. When the civil government cannot squelch these types of actions, it won't be long before we are in Mad Max territory.

work was being used in a paid mod and sent Valve a Cease and Desist

Of the 17 paid mods made available in the initial batch, 2 are known to have run into the 'borrowed' asset issue. One was removed, and the other issued a separate version without the assets (don't know if it was still really playable as it was fur armors to counter the exposure effect of the mod). It sounded like just the modders and Valve's lawyers were in discussion, but other folks were certainly talking about getting lawyers involved for a variety of reasons.

353 Show of hands: how many people think the *goal* of organized urban violence and tepid legal response is to provoke a civilian response that can provoke a general crackdown?

Note that Ferguson included an armed civilian response, but it was almost entirely deterrent in nature - to my recollection they just stood around and the provocateurs avoided them.

It would be nice if someone outside the degraded FBI could check these scenes and compare them to get a sense of who the organizers were. I suspect the FBI is pretty clear on this, there are reports from previous agitation events of the FBI clearing caches of improvised weapons immediately before the event.

But I'm not hearing about these jackasses being arrested.

But I need about twenty such roofs from this storm to be contracted and completed, to fund the required surgery. It's gonna take screws for this one.

390 I don't wish a nuclear weapon on any city. It is going to horrific when it happens (IMO, it is no longer an if). The way BHO is going, it is getting to be more and more likely it is going to happen soon. Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan are not stable. China and Russia are once again in a cool war struggle against the US.

It won't be an ICBM, it will likely be a Gulfstream jet, a cargo container on a ship, or maybe just a private yacht. And everyone will deny they had anything to do with it. I suggest everyone look at their home and job location. If it is in a target zone, relocation might be reasonable. Especially if you can switch jobs to something more rural.

Posted by: Vendette at April 28, 2015 12:55 AM (TEpA2)

397 Ira, I can understand your revulsion to nuking a city. To put this in context, when I was ten, in October 1962 during the Cuban missile crisis, the air raid sirens were accidentally activated in my neighborhood right about the time school was getting out. I saw parents and teachers crying and terrified and that made a huge impact on me.
Later as an adult, I found out that there were seven targets in the Denver metro area. Stapelton airport (long enough runways to handle B-52's), Lowry AFB (active at the time for tactical forces), Rocky Mountain Arsenal (nerve and biological agents), Rocky Flats (all kinds of nuclear weapons), Denver Federal Center (Accountants, why, don't know, ask the Soviets), Buckley ANG base (again tactical air), and the flagpole in front of the State capitol.
My school was five hundred yards from the Stapelton runways. A one megaton air burst would have reduced my happy ass to atoms in less than a second.
When I was a teen I read a book called "The Effects of Nuclear Weapons", I don't remember the author. In very dry prose, it told me what I could expect if I were ever the recipient of a nuclear payload.
Just to put it into perspective, the majority of residents in Hiroshima and Nagasaki survived. Most had medical issues for the rest of their lives, but they lived.
There were horrendous casualties, but more survived than were killed. The yields on most modern nuclear weapons is much larger than the WWII weapons, but survival is possible. It just boils down to your location, and in some cases, wind direction.
Sorry for the long post.

416 Baltimore Police News Conference

Commissioner: We encourage peaceful protest. Having said that WE WILL NO LONGER TOLERATE UNLAWFUL CONDUCT FROM OUR CITIZENS.

As of this moment we have done a video scan of all persons outside on the streets in the affected areas of unrest. Facial recognition will be used for any lawbreakers and they will be arrested and face criminal prosecution.

As of now, all officers have been briefed on the current procedure. These procedures include, but are not limited to:

1. For any projectile thrown towards my officers they will be answered with bean bag shots. These bean bags will be directed to the area of their origin. Any person in this general area can expect to be hit as, at a minimum, 12 shots will be fired. These bean bags will contain a dye that will not be easily removed. I expect the stain to last at least a week. Anyone observed with the stain after tonight will be apprehended and questioned by authorities. Criminal charges can be expected.

2. Looters will be apprehended upon leaving the affected business. Those that try to run will be shot with (hopefully) non-lethal weaponry. We plan to aim at the knee but can not be held responsible for severe damage to the persons involved in this crime. Those that are involved will be swiftly arrested and will be residing in a local jail until their arraignment and perhaps until their trial date. There will be no exceptions so please, parents, keep your children away from temptation. Nothing is free in this world, and someone else's property is no exception..............they had to pay for their property and if you want it, you should pay for it too.

3. You folks DO realize you are destroying your own community don't you?? Rest assured that the damage you do to your local businesses and homes will not be rebuilt by anyone outside of this community. I can guarantee you that there will be no outside help solicited to rebuild, as the city will not seek outside assistance. You will live with what you have wrought and any rebuilding will be at your expense and your expense alone.

Now, I have a lot of work to do and NO, I will not take questions at this time. Good day.

438 Weird thing about today's versus the Cold War's nuke scenario:

Cold War: lots of super-high-yield nukes fall everywhere, most everyone dies... but thanks to MAD, likelihood of bombing was low.

Today: thanks to terrorism and individual cells, the likelihood of a bomb going off is way UP... but, the most likely scenario is that it'll be just one or a few bombs, of unknown calibers.

453 Nuclear war, I think if we get hit, it will be only a few bombs. Norks, or Islamic terrorists with Iranian or Pakistani weapons. Not an all out Russian or Chinese attack. Likely all just Uranium or Plutonium weapons? Last I heard, Pakistan did not have Thermonuclear weapons (H-Bombs)? A mile away from the target, and you will likely survive the flash and the air blast from a 20 kT nuke.

I'm hoping that living 300-500 miles downwind of the Montana and Dakota missile fields will be OK, because the bad guys don't have the bombs or means to hit them.

455 Tonight one hears the distant wail of sirens once again, on their way to help deal with the "sympathy riots" the commies are trying to gin up in Oakland, SF and Berkeley -- which happens every single time there's some race-based outrage or riot anywhere in the US. The radicals here just can't bear the thought of some other city getting all the headlines, so there is always the attempt to out-riot the original rioters. Of course, the local commies are only rarely successful (tonight's planned Oakland riot, for example, seems to have mostly fizzled), but you've got to give them credit for trying ("credit" in the sense of "shake one's head in disgust and derision").

And as I type this, the sirens fade away into the distance. Another night in the progressive city.

I think the norks are more likely to lash out at Japan and South Korea, which are easy for them to hit. If they try for the US, I think it will likely be an unconventional delivery system like a container or a small passenger aircraft. Maybe a freighter with several short range ballistic missiles?

Question. Does anyone know if the Norks have ever had a successful test? The first one sounded like it was a "fizzle" in 200??? But they should have access to the AQ Khan files, and Pakistan has been very successful.

Ah, OK, then it was probably SAC I was thinking of, because I now specifically remember that it was in Nebraska, and I remember being amazed that the #2 target in the country would be in such a (from my biased West Coast liberal view) random-seeming "flyover" state. yeah, Strategic Air Command would be hit in the very first volley (along with Lawrence Livermore Lab).

I don't think that nuke research or political capitulation centers would be on the list. Nuke research takes many years and many additional resources to come to fruition; and DC is too busy trying to distance themselves from the rest of the country to worry about. Cheyenne Mountain used to be a good spot for Command and Control -- and I hear it's being refurbed.

More likely targets for today's nukes would be terror targets (NY, LA, Chicago), financial centers (NY, Charlotte, SF, Chicago), or military.

500 The opening riff before Patton starts singing is one of the more impressive melodies I've heard from a bass player where the goal isn't necessarily to stand out. The keyboard carries the song... Gould's playing C minor pentatonic, and bends a note right before the vocal kicks in.

It's not the Claypool/Geddy Lee/Steve Harris thing, it's (to me) the exact right lick at the exact right time... the guy I'd compare him to is John Taylor of Duran Duran. Not necessarily going to wow you with chops, but always seems to play the right stuff.

Off to bed with me- thanks, guys!

Fun little bit of trivia -- a metric fuckton of telemarketing used to be run out of Omaha, because phone lines were extremely cheap there.....but were subject to pre-emption in case of war. The DoD built 'em, and decided to rent 'em out so long as bombs weren't flyin'.

It sounds a lot like how WWI started. Everyone had mutual defense treaties. We Must Defend Our Allies!

I hope cooler heads will prevail. My fear is that after Israel destroys Iran, the Mid-east countries all decide to attack Israel. Because 1) it is wounded, and 2) because their Islamic populations demand it. Israel then uses weapons 51-200 to destroy any other country that tries attacking it. The rest of the world gets their Jew Hate On, and emabargoes a badly hurt Israel, and let the Islamics chop up the remains. And BHO would be the head cheerleader for the emabargo and destruction of Israel.

508 Nuclear war, I think if we get hit, it will be only a few bombs. Norks, or Islamic terrorists with Iranian or Pakistani weapons.

I worry about it being us because obama's inviting it, and more importantly I live here, so that's what I worry about. But aside from the Norks, I'm not sure anyone else who might be tempted to do so really has us as their first target. Russia and China are out as they each assume to do so ends with their annihilation, so we're really talking about one of the mohammedan factions. But they have other enemies, who are nearer and easier to hit, including each other.

I think the first nuclear exchange will be between a recent nuclear power and someone they think is without the bomb, so, Iran and Saudi Arabia, or one of the smaller gulf states.

510 Cooth, when you have enough nukes to hit every major city in the world, some two or three time over, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference if you launch them all. We still have that capability, but it's fading fast. Putin, on the other hand, is working on building that back up. And we do nothing. Because fairness, and gender is a social construct. The children are now in charge.

533 I don't think we actually get to global nuclear war. I think Russia looks at the ashes of Iran and decides there's no one to claim any treaty obligations, checks the oil market, grins, and calls it a day. China/India/Pakistan could go off as dominoes but I don't think it spreads from there without one of them trying to do so (launching on Japan just because, I guess). Today, I don't think anyone (God notwithstanding) avenges Israel-they go Sampson and it effectively ends there.

In a single or few bomb attack against western targets I think our current 'leaders' just give speeches about the need for restraint.

541 "The Barbarians were an American garage band of the 1960s with a few nationally charted hits. They had their biggest hit with the 1965 novelty single, "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?".

The Barbarians were formed in the summer of 1964 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, by original members Victor "Moulty" Moulton, Bruce Benson, Ronnie Enos, and Jerry Causi. The band was quickly assembled by Moulton, who had agreed to do a gig at The Rumpus Room, an ex-jazz club where his cousin worked. After packing the house for their opening performance, they were asked to come back numerous times throughout the season. By the end of the summer, record companies had heard about them and they were taken to New York to start their careers.

While their debut single, "Hey Little Bird" produced by Al Ham (on Joy Records) bombed, two of their next three singles (on Laurie) charted on Billboard, (with "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?" peaking at No. 55) and also made the Cash Box charts. ...

Their "pirates on the beach" look--leather sandals, open necked/bloused sleeved shirts (sometimes a vest as well), black jeans, longer than usual hair--was distinctive and romantic, topped by the sight of drummer Moulton's hook-shaped left-hand prosthesis. Having lost the hand in an explosion when he was fourteen, Moulton had enabled his drumming by modifying the prosthesis to hold a drumstick."

In any event, it's the simpler stuff that impresses me the most, in regards to how it's put together with the band. The best bass is simple especially if it's carrying the riff/hook/melody. In 1977, at the height of their fame, the Sex Pistols gave their first TV interview in England. The clueless interviewer asked Johnny Rotten which band he'd cite as his biggest musical influence in the formation of the new "punk" genre. To everyone's eternal stupefaction and amazement, Johnny Rotten replied, in all seriousness, "Hawkwind."

A million punk kids immediately rushed out buy Hawkwinds' albums, thinking they were going to discover the ultimate proto-punk band which led to the inspiration behind the Sex Pistols -- only to be completely confused upon hearing spacey prog-rock!

567 lol yeah, and Blues Bros. And that was agreeing with what you said. Its how compatico you are with the drums, first and most important. I've had a couple of guys I really grooved with, and in those moments it was real magic, even if no one else noticed..

I've also been outta practice lately too. I recently got back into it with a 5 string Ibanez Gio, but I'm not happy with it.

The neck is too wide, and far too heavy for me, especially being out of practice. (Im sure a different style and fret curve would help)

My main is an 86 MiM P Bass, but it needs a fret job, so thats why I tried the Gio.

Lately, because my friend wants to get a party band together, I've been playing rhythm guitar, and neglecting the basses. But thats only till we get more members, and I will go back to the deep end.

576 lol yeah, and Blues Bros. (Im sure a different style and fret curve would help) My main is an 86 MiM P Bass, but it needs a fret job, so thats why I tried the Gio. Lately, because my friend wants to get a party band together, I've been playing rhythm guitar, and neglecting the basses. But thats only till we get more members, and I will go back to the deep end.

Posted by: JarvisW at April 28, 2015 02:41 AM

Try a Jazz? Maybe a telecaster bass? I like the precision neck the best. Rythym guitar player huh? *fist bump*. Why go back to bass? Guitar is way better for posing.

I think I'm just going to reveal the answer for this one, because the answer, while very interesting, is almost impossible to uncover:

John Lennon was born during the Blitz -- a major Nazi bombing raid -- on Liverpool on October 9, 1940. Literally, as the bombs fell. During the birth, his mother could hear the explosions of the Luftwaffe bombs hitting near the hospital. She was so fearful/patriotic that in a spur-of-the-moment decision she named the new baby "Winston" (in honor of the new Prime Minister) as a sort of "Fuck you" to Hitler. But since the parents had already promised to name the baby, if a boy, after his grandfather ("John"), she made "Winston" his middle name instead!

Posted by: Adriane the Music Critic ... at April 28, 2015 03:38 AM

Oh... it wasn't that big, size wise. Not golfball size or anything. That kind of shit can cause it's own problems. This was marble size, max. But... there was a ton of the stuff, with near cyclone wind and rain. The windows held up ok and the neighbours are fine. But, it was up to 2 feet or so of the stuff, some places collapsed... everything got buried and the streets were chaos. The big hassle was it piled up on the roof of everyplace. Here as with the neighbours, the gutters filled and the water backed into the ceiling. Had to get up onto the roof to try to clear the gutters and pipes while it was on... nearly came off a couple of times. Gave it up. It was crazy. trying to move on a tin roof with a foot or more of ice with high winds. Place is ok now apart from water damage. The garden is history, though. The amount of rain and ice overwhelmed the drains and cars were washed away.

Nope -- you're almost two years too early! Aside from novelty records like "The Martian Hop," practically no rock 'n' roll hits featured synthesizers until late '67 at the earliest ("Wild Thing" was from mid '66), and even then it was very rare. It wasn't until '69 that synthesizers could be clearly heard on any hit records, and not until '70 ("Lucky Man" by E.L.P.) that synthesizers were the primary instrument.

Yes, correct -- as I said, various bands experimented with synthesizers in late '67-'68 (not merely Pink Floyd), but you can't really hear the synthesizer on most of such songs from that era -- the producers used the Moog merely to "fill in" the sound-space to make the track seem more lush and orchestral. It wasn't until '69 that it began to be featured as a distinct new solo instrument that you could pick out with your ear on the record, and not until '70 until there was a major hit featuring a Moog as the lead.

(We're speaking specifically of mainstream rock here -- as mentioned above, there were novelty records with synthesizers earlier than that.)

Posted by: JarvisW at April 28, 2015 04:23 AM (E7Iyp)

695 Ooooh, interesting:

"Forbidden Planet‍ 's innovative electronic music score, credited as "electronic tonalities," partly to avoid having to pay any of the film industry music guild fees, was composed by Louis and Bebe Barron. MGM producer Dore Schary discovered the couple quite by chance at a beatnik nightclub in Greenwich Village while on a family Christmas visit to New York City; Schary hired them on the spot to compose his film's musical score. While the theremin (which was not used in Forbidden Planet) had been used on the soundtrack of Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945), the Barrons' electronic composition is credited with being the first completely electronic film score; their soundtrack preceded the invention of the Moog synthesizer by eight years (1964)."

So it wasn't a theremin -- NOR a synthesizer!

I was thinking that it was a trick question, and you were referring to The Blue Boys!

(That is to say, before the Rolling Stones were actually called the Rolling Stones, they briefly took the name "The Blue Boys," before shortly thereafter dropping the name and also switching out various band members. The five guys I mentioned were the original members of The Blue Boys, and so one might say that they counted as the "original line-up" of the Rolling Stones! But no, it wasn't a trick question, so I didn't quite get it!)

721 Orioles Executive Vice President John Angelos:
“Brett, speaking only for myself, I agree with your point that the principle of peaceful, non-violent protest and the observance of the rule of law is of utmost importance in any society. MLK, Gandhi, Mandela, and all great opposition leaders throughout history have always preached this precept. Further, it is critical that in any democracy investigation must be completed and due process must be honored before any government or police members are judged responsible.

That said, my greater source of personal concern, outrage and sympathy beyond this particular case is focused neither upon one night’s property damage nor upon the acts, but is focused rather upon the past four-decade period during which an American political elite have shipped middle class and working class jobs away from Baltimore and cities and towns around the U.S. to third-world dictatorships like China and others, plunged tens of millions of good hard-working Americans into economic devastation, and then followed that action around the nation by diminishing every American’s civil rights protections in order to control an unfairly impoverished population living under an ever-declining standard of living and suffering at the butt end of an ever-more militarized and aggressive surveillance state.

The innocent working families of all backgrounds whose lives and dreams have been cut short by excessive violence, surveillance, and other abuses of the Bill of Rights by government pay the true price, an ultimate price, and one that far exceeds the importance of any kids’ game played tonight, or ever, at Camden Yards. We need to keep in mind people are suffering and dying around the U.S., and while we are thankful no one was injured at Camden Yards, there is a far bigger picture for poor Americans in Baltimore and everywhere who don’t have jobs and are losing economic, civil, and legal rights, and this makes inconvenience at a ball game irrelevant in light of the needless suffering government is inflicting upon ordinary Americans.”

736 tmi3rd, regarding your friend. Does an atheist have have a soul? Do they think they have one or not?
I'm not so nearly nice as St. Thomas Aquinas, I feel, If you feel you have no soul then just STFU. Why should I bother giving my energy to a slab of meat? Or someone who imagines that's all they are, animated meat. If a soul, then what? The liberal but still somewhat religious friend may not feel a need for organized religion, neither do I, religion is an attempt to apply value to scientific knowledge. Religion is about value.

Some religions teach a spark of divinity in each individual. A divine cohabitation possible only because the individual made a moral decision. No moral decision then no divine indwelt cohabitation. Religion would be acknowledging and trying to something with that.

True. It probably wouldn't have been permanent as Hendrix seemed to be in a change phase at that time. But, even with the egos it could have been a productive partnership. It would have been a good fit with Jones, who looked up to Hendrix and wouldn't have cramped his style as Jones wasn't a songwriter, but a multi instrumentalist.

754 To paraphrase the great American black theologian Reverend Jerry Wright, "Baltimore's chickens have come home to be fried."

755 Black mayor of Baltimore refers to rioters as 'thugs' which used to be super secret white racist code word.

757 The Baltimore curfew watch has now been upgraded to a curfew warning.

758 746 still the wild thing, so to speak, was the ring.. supposadly jimis fave, (some idiots claim it effectd his licks) and he willed it to Brian when he died, and then Brian was found wearing it in the pool..

BUT, I have no proof of it, its rumors that were common in the 80/90s

Posted by: JarvisW at April 28, 2015 05:42 AM (E7Iyp)

ehh...Jones died a year before Hendrix.

Posted by: JarvisW at April 28, 2015 05:59 AM

I've heard it, decades ago on vinyl. Can't recall the name of it. I seem to remember that there were tracks of Hendrix-Morrison and Hendrix-Jones and at least one track with Hendrix-Morrison-Jones? It was a bootleg, maybe they were from different sessions and they weren't all on the same one. But I got this memory of Hendrix on guitar, Jones on sitar and Morrison singing something or other?

Posted by: otho at April 28, 2015 06:04 AM (tBSrv)

761 Bign, thats not relevant, just like global worming evidence!!

Posted by: JarvisW at April 28, 2015 06:05 AM (E7Iyp)

768 Mornin', VIA.

I sense a lot of p*ssin' 'n' moanin' coming up today as we continue with the long-running soap opera, Life With Choom.

At least you can turn away from soaps on teh teevee; the effects of the Mocha Messiah's reign will be around long after all of us have gone on....

No Pissing and moaning allowed.

For today is Rape Tuesday.

Or is that on Thursday?
I can never keep that straight.

771 For those of us who have been tracking the case of the Free Range Children in another Maryland county, it will be interesting to watch Maryland CPS swoop in, gather up all the feral yoots on the streets of Baltimore, and charge their parent with child neglect.

773 I guess referring to rioting which is confined to one race is doubleplusungood to refer to as a 'race riot'?

774 "VIA, a car for the times"

Does that come with "Spinners", for the true downtown experience?

Criminy, the thread is moving fast.

So, I was
thinking.....with these huge, over-the-top, ruin-lives,
out-of-proportion, fascist penalties for mere refusal of service.....if
you're a Christian baker or photographer or florist and a pair of gays
comes in to have you endorse their wedding, wouldn't it be the sensible
thing to do to take them into the back of your shop and "disappear"
them?

I mean, I don't think a mob hit costs $135,000 -- if anyone knows, I'll stand corrected.

Your best bet might be to take a page from their own book, "Fried Green Tomatoes" and open a side line selling barbeque.

Vandals. gangs of bike riders, and irate baseball fans. All in one city.

783 Do you think that any of the actors who's careers took off because of "The Wire" ever go back to Baltimore?

Do you think that in the future, the time period when "The Wire" was being filmed will be referred to as "the good old days"?
