Early Morning Thread 4/26/15 [krakatoa]

These "weekends" need to be re-evaluated. Two days just doesn't do it for me anymore.

1 Me neither. Since they constitute most of my paycheck.

2 Weekends should at a minimum be four days in length.

Possibly seven.

6 Time to spend another Sunday with Paintball practice near Delaware.

Spent some of last night watching the local news concerning the protests downtown, and wanted to share a few thoughts and impressions.

The police were well organized, yet very respectful of the protestors.
For the most part, the protestors who were local were determined to see that the protests were nonviolent.

Press conference with the Mayor had members of the Grey Family, and the black faith based community in no uncertain terms denouncing any violence.

For the most part, despite the national reports, it went the right way.
The Violence and looting can be tracked to roughly two groups who from the start wanted violence and looting.

And there are many more examples of protestors halting the actions of violent protestors even before Police arrived then there are examples of mass rioting.

Let's see if tonights scheduled protests are any different.

Will be back much later.
Don't trash the place...m'kay?

19 This is kind of interesting: I read an article in the Law Bulletin recently about this woman who went into her husband's computer and made it a "rule" that all his emails would be secretly forwarded to her. She did this in 2007 and it went on until 2013 - after they were divorced for two years! I believe the husband finally cottoned on to it when her divorce attorney knew things he couldn't possibly have known otherwise. The guy tried to sue the ex-wife and her attorney under wiretapping laws but the judge dismissed it because apparently the transmission was not considered "simultaneous." I think the ex-husband is appealing and trying to go after them on something else.

I just found this to be such a gross violation of this guy's privacy...and a pretty clear warning to be vigilant about access to your computer.

Yes, okay, she's stupid. In an actual real debate a used toothbrush would beat her.

But she's just repeating the standard Bolshevik procedure of regurgitating a lie long and loud enough to a receptive audience and a duplicitous propaganda ministry.

In a sane world, she'd be pelted with rotten eggs let alone never have a snowball's chance in hell of attaining elected office. In a sane world.

32 "Is Gillibrand trying to exceed Debbie Washes-Her-Schlitz in weapons grade stupid?"

Gillibrand's political rise is interesting. By that I mean it's so so boring and uninteresting that the boringness itself is interesting.

She ran for a House seat against four-term incumbent John Sweeney in Upstate New York in 2006. (That was a bad year for Republicans to begin with.) It came out that cops had been to Sweeney's home in response to 911 calls for domestic violence. Gillibrand's position was to say that she was against domestic violence, then to shut up, be a woman, and let everyone fill in the gaps. She easily won that seat. She won "re-election" once.

Two years later, when the president appointed Hillary Clinton to his cabinet, the governor appointed Gillibrand to fill Clinton's seat in the Senate. She was "re-elected" in the special election that soon followed.

I don't think Kirsten Gillibrand is stupid; to the contrary, she's been dealt some good hands and played them well by doing nothing. Kirsten Gillibrand is the Jay Cutler of politics.

39 Looking at the photos from the Baltimore protest, it should be immediately obvious that 'protesting' is for the young.

I was surprised to see both sides had 'enforcers' on the street; young men, physically fit, and larger than average. And it reminded me of the WalMart Parking lot fight. Two or three or four men ganging up on one guy.

In the background was an army of innocent bystanders standing by and watching. This too is the story of Obama; a handful of enforcers, and an army of bystanders.

Ditto NASCAR, dude.

Ever wandered into a Ford showroom and asked to see a two-door Fusion with a V8 and rear-wheel drive? Hell, that would get my attention!

When I first got interested, the stock car boys had to run factory frames, suspension and sheet metal. Not to mention modified versions of engines you could actually buy. They sometimes got extra-creative with them, but never far enough away from "stock" to be totally unrecognizable.

I miss those days.

Geology lesson: way, way back in time India used to be an island. Then it slammed into Nepal and formed the Himalayas -- which are still rising. Some geologists think that was one (of many) events that caused mass extinction on the planet. Something about the huge expanse of freshly exposed rock either releasing -- or sucking up huge quantities of CO2. I forget which.

My take is this... yes, tectonic plates are involved... pressures are constantly there... if the injection of fluids is lubricating those pressure points and the locals are feeling 1.5's on the Richter scale... it's sparing them from the sudden 9.0 'big one'.

Seriously, considering the forces released during an earthquake, how is it even remotely possible that hydraulic fracturing can cause quakes? 90 Had fun at a wedding last night. It was for a friend of the missus. Amazingly when it's for one of her friends she can make it until the end of the night. For mine, we're out of there by 9 PM.

Didn't care. They had some decent beer and scotch at the bar, so I was able to keep myself amused.

94 The wedding was for a 25 year old couple. Amazing that when it comes time for dancing, they're primarily playing and dancing to the music of the 60's and 70's. Some newer stuff and some line dancing stuff I had not seen before.
I found that the scotch helps my singing.

95 Had a buddy that was in Guard. On a training mission they flew out to outer banks and buzzed a friend while he was fishing.

There's an island halfway between the outer banks and the 'inner banks' that the military uses for target practice. It has an 'exclusion zone' all around it, no boating, fishing, clamming, hunting allowed. It's a prime area for all those activities. I hope someday to move not far from that area but am not thrilled with having planes buzzing the area all the time. The NC Governor says he can't do a thing about it.

They use to be based at Myrtle Beach AF base before it was closed. It was cool as shit when the boys would make a run down the coast. Girls would flash them! I am talking about 200 ft off the ground flying along. You could see them coming, this was after first bush war, and people would start standing up to wave.

The terms JATO and RATO are used more or less interchangeably, but these are really rocket motors. In fact, helping airplanes take off from shorter runways was one of the first practical applications of rocket power, and the laboratory that conducted the pioneering work in the US eventually gave rise to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which today conducts interplanetary missions under NASA.

166 Ok, then, entire long comment eaten. Yumm.

I hit Half Price Books yesterday, and came up with two winners, to add to my collection of reference books about women on the 19th century frontier: the first was published by the Naylor Company, a Tiny Publishing outfit specializing in local history: "Her Name Was Ann - A Pioneer Teacher in Texas" by Annie Mae Morriss - which had been marked down successively from $75 to $10. It's a rarity, it seems; many of the Naylor Company books are, since they did relatively small print runs. For extra jollies, it's autographed by the author.
The second lucky find was also $10 - a first edition of "No Life for a Lady" by Agnes Morley Cleaveland, who wrote it about growing up on a New Mexico ranch in the late 1800s. (Alas, without dust jacket, which reduces the antiquarian value). I've started that one first, and it is most lively and informative. It was a best-seller, apparently, when first published in 1941, and is well-thought of by local historians. (Fuller report next week.)

Reading stuff like that, at that age, you belong in the Nerd Hall of Fame. Next you'll be telling me you programmed in Logo in high school.

The JPL developed software was so far ahead of its time it was amazing. Quantum Leap stuff. It had to be for the moon missions as they has somewhere around a million (iirc) separate parts to inventory. In fact you know how (only recently) you start to type in a search engine and suggested results appear based on just a couple letters? We had that more then a quarter century ago. Saved a huge amount of time.
