Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (4-23-2015)I was very touched by what the minister said about me on stage in Perth, but I was even more touched by what she said to the surviving editorial staff at Charlie Hebdo. I mentioned in that Trudeau post an upcoming engagement I'm doing on the Continent later this year and how I couldn't understand why they'd asked me - until I remembered that everyone ahead of me on the invitation list is either dead or in hiding. So the symbolism of what [Australian foreign minister] Julie Bishop chose to do is valuable and important - and stands in splendid contrast to the hollow pomposity of John Kerry and his stooge James Taylor. Art of Manliness Presents The Winston Churchill School of Adulthood So I happened across this set of articles a few weeks ago and I have to say it's one of the best reads available on the internets for men. And it's free. They really ought to put these together and publish it as a book. And then charge good money for it. Here Brett McKay, who runs the website The Art of Manliness has written a sequence of articles laying out how to be a man in full and lead a satisfying, accomplished life. A lot of it I think the morons will recognize as hard-won wisdom and things we've known to be true in our hearts even if we've never verbalized them - or always fully followed them. Each article as well as the entire series is based on the life of Winston Churchill and in particular how he dealt with various challenges in life and created the means to overcome them, thrive and do great things. But the key word is create. Churchill was given some gifts and some (many) flaws and had a very inauspicious beginning in life and as a man - but he chose to make himself into the man he ultimately wanted to be and that allowed to him to create the life he wanted to lead. Now in many ways Churchill was sui generis and likely 99.97% of men could never hope to match his accomplishments. But his methods, philosophies, and manner of living life are available to most if not all men. So rather than trying to be Churchill instead aim for maybe adding 5% more Churchill into your life. You life may become happier but almost certainly it will become more satisfying and productive. The Winston Churchill School of Adulthood Is Now in SessionLesson #1: Develop a Mighty Moral Code Lesson #2: Establish a Daily Routine Lesson #3: Live Romantically Lesson #4: Cultivate a Nostalgic Love for History Lesson #5: Don't Give Up Your Sense of Adventure Lesson #6: Don't Be Afraid to Start a Family Lesson #7: Work Like a Slave; Command Like a King; Create Like a God Tips on Hustling, Leadership, and Hobbies from Winston Churchill Conclusion: Thought + Action = An Awesome Adulthood This set of articles is targeted for men in their 20s. I think guys from say age 16 to 23 would get the absolute most from it and maybe find themselves inspired and directed. But even older middle-aged dudes like yours truly will still get a lot from it. Hell it's inspired me after reading it and made me think a lot about how my life is and how I'd like to be. So much so that I've decided to in Churchill's parlance to take action this day: So I've decided to go to Iceland. Why? Because I've been wanting to go there for almost 30 years. But the circumstances have never been right to do so. So I have decided to just make the circumstances be right. So I'm going and I'm going to do it in the next two weeks. And I intend to enjoy the hell out it. And when I come back I also intend to make some other structural, positive changes in my life. Housekeeping Note: I will in London next week for business and then the next week in Iceland doing what I want. So no ONTs from me for two weeks. There'll be fill-ins from the usual gang but if you think you've got what it takes to make an ONT - if you think you got the balls to do an ONT - then contact one of the Cobs and make your offer. Peace. Out. Odds of Maetenloch returning to the ONT: Good

Yep, not many freeways in LA. You forgot "the." LA people always say "the" for some reason. Posted by: Splunge Well - most say "Los 405" nowadays..... As for freeway chases, the city is so big and spread out you can't get out into an open area to put the pedal down or hide under the trees. So many chases end up in a foothill cul-de-sac. Been trying some new places lately.
Went to a Mexican place yesterday in Lakewood, not that far from me, called Adobo Taco Grill. Walked in and was... a little taken aback. Relatively small room behind the door, with an entire quarter taken up for the kitchen, and the rest was some small tables to eat at, a table with a kettle full of beans (DIY if you want 'em on your plate) and another small cart full of produce mixes and salsas to put on your taco. Oh, and the menu was written in chalk on a blackboarded wall, and was all of 20 words long. Got two carne asada tacos and a cherry coke for less than $6. Then today, I went to another place further away in Cerritos called Amor y Tacos. Getting tons of raves. Walked in and much bigger, much more decor, and a three-page menu full of autentico! Oaxacan recipes and what have you. Had the same thing: a plate of carne asada tacos, but they also bring a bowl of rice and beans (they're in the same bowl) right to you as well. Amor cost me $16 including the tip to eat there. Who had the better meal? The cheaper place: Adobo. Just goes to show... Posted by: qdpsteve at April 24, 2015 12:25 AM (elbY7) 196

#241: The commissioner feels no qualms about publicly stating that he wants particular teams to win in the playoffs. The referees then receive paychecks signed by him.
And when Tim Donaghy was arrested for betting on games he'd officiated, he initially said that NBA refs do it all the time. Then, he suddenly clammed up on the matter. Icelandic chicks are fuckin smoking. But they aren't looking to hook up with tourists. They immediately ask you in Icelandic if you are Icelandic (It's a weird fucking language)
Iceland is a really neat place to visit. Everyone Speaks English and is super nice. Reykjavik only has a population of 300k and it's very much like a college town. If you are out to party with locals, don't start drinking after dinner. Locals show up to the bars 12:30-1:00 AM (Bars close at 4). Until Recently they had Prohibition (Drunken Vikings are things to worry about. Rapey!), so everyone gets liquored up at home (Plus bars are very expensive, I easily spend a grand at bars in 5 days), and then goes to the bar. I'm a smoker so I know what was going on in the streets. Suddenly at 12:30 AM it went fucking mental. They have crazy tolerances. I watched them take the fucking pepsi challenge with my Scottish Friends. It was a draw and I don't remember a fucking thing. Posted by: Zakn at April 24, 2015 01:08 AM (ec1Ol) 274

We'll see if pointing out that special censoring snowflakes are acting contrary to the school's mission statement is "hate speech":
Out in the real world, there is a thing known as a "Career Limiting Move" -- or "CLM". I have seen, with my own eyes, CLMs such as watching porn at work; inspecting parts and taking rejected ones home to sell as scrap; leaving a FedEx'd check for 1/3 of the year's revenues on the counter of a catering truck instead of running it to accounting, as directed; or backdating review signoffs to avoid censure for taking vacation. In each case, the reason that these issues became career-limiting was that they not only were mistakes or dishonesties -- they showed a distinct disregard for what the person was supposed to be accomplishing in the first place. (This is, btw, why salesmen are locked in fixed battle with accountants over their expense reports. Everyone knows they're padded, accountants constantly find errors or fraud, but other than "correction" and "a stern talking-to", nothing will ever happen because of it. On the other hand, booking phantom orders to fictitious customers will get salesmen fired and potentially blacklisted.] Because a salesman's primary task is to book good orders. So, what is your primary task at Oberlin? Here's a hint -- it might be the student version of the school's mission statement (which is overly broad and vague, but.....) which can be found at http://tinyurl.com/k2c9uen I bring to your special attention: "Open the world to its students and develop in them the skills and knowledge they will need to engage with and navigate in highly diverse communities and in a global society". The hiring managers some comments back were entirely correct in saying that the signers of this statement were limiting their future careers. Not because they were passionate and wrong -- but because it nullifies their reason for being at Oberlin in the first place. I hope your fellow students and alumni let you know how much they resent the shadow you are casting upon their degrees. Posted by: cthulhu at April 24, 2015 02:14 AM (T1005) 298

Ambassadors cropped up like hay, Prime Ministers and such as they Grew like asparagus in May, And Dukes were three a penny. On every side Field-Marshals gleamed, Small beer were Lords-Lieutenant deemed, With Admirals the ocean teemed All round his wide dominions. And Party Leaders you might meet In twos and threes in every street Maintaining, with no little heat, Their various opinions. That King, although no one denies His heart was of abnormal size, Yet he'd have acted otherwise If he had been acuter. The end is easily foretold, When every blessed thing you hold Is made of silver, or of gold, You long for simple pewter. When you have nothing else to wear But cloth of gold and satins rare, For cloth of gold you cease to care -- Up goes the price of shoddy. Here's a little bit of music you've heard 10,000 times (because the copyright expired a while back) -- as the partial background for almost every cartoon from their golden age. http://tinyurl.com/k34pyk5
Mind you, this is particularly ironic since the copyrights on those cartoons have been extended time-and-time again by a thoroughly bought-and-paid-for congress. Let me make sure you got that -- the original 'toons were made cheaply by using out-of-copyright music, and made so much money that copyright has been stretched over-and-over-and-over so that nobody could make artworks that were derivative of them....the same way they, themselves, were derivative of others. It was an impulse thing -- we were visiting Arlington, anyway -- but I was a bit upset when the local finder system widget came up empty. There's still a conversation waiting to happen, that I hope may happen someday. Until I can do my little part, I know he lies there in good company. I had thought about going to the grocery store this morning about 5 am. But I said, no if I do that they will put up the morning thread at 6 and I will be late.

I'm Canadian and I feel a lot more than microaggressed on when I see someone tramping a US flag (on TV, thank goodness I've never seen it in person). I imagine a US Veteran feels it a lot more, yet that kind of free speech is A-OK. Free speech I agree with somehow can't be tolerated as it is triggering.
Somehow people's "right" to get a cake or birth control extends to demanding a particular person bake it or pay for it and conscientious objection is not allowed. A law or regulation on accommodation somehow trumps the plainly stated text of the first amendment. You're gonna have to unfuk-up this situation in the next election and IMHO nothing less than a dyed-in-the-wool constitutional-conservative President is going to be needed. A someone who wants only good things for the US, I really hope you get one. Hillary can only do some much to help. Posted by: Dirks Strewn at April 24, 2015 06:55 AM (TIgJq) 377

Beating or kicking the crap out of flag-burners or tramplers is likewise political speech, and the government has no place in suppressing or criminalizing such. I missed the ONT too, which gives me a sad, because it was a fine ONT.
Enjoy your trip,Maet. I fear an ace ONT like I fear the fires of hell. BTW, I caught Dana Perino talking about what a swell, nice guy Joe Biden is last night when she was promoting her new book on Fox. Aw, shucks, he's just a sweetheart, according to Dana. Like a lot of Dems, really. Funny, I never hear any Dems talking about what great people Republicans are. I know ace and the cobs like Dana because she does podcasts here. Meh. Following up on Geraghty, isn't there a law or aphorism that says leftists don't really believe in any of their stated principles? ANYONE KNOW WHAT THAT LAW IS CALLED?

"Fat Bastard Adam Gadahn Killed in US Drone Strike
Sadly along with two hostages." I read that Gadahn was killed in a different strike than the hostages. Hmm. If true, why included Gadahn in the same cycle as the death of the hostages? Posted by: Davod at April 24, 2015 08:22 AM (FWznJ) 382

Not an ideal moment to be lionising Winston Churchill's decision-making, at the centenary of Gallipoli. :/

The Last Lion Volume 1 by William Manchester should be required reading throughout the english speaking world. Churchill was an amazing individual that lead real life adventures better then the fiction in books. He managed to stick his nose into almost every corner of the Empire. He was a considered the best polo player in his regiment while stationed in India, He was a correspondent in South Africa during the boer war. He stood for parliment and for better or worse had his hands all over decisions that shaped the 20th and 21st centuries from Palestine to Ireland.
BTW American Ceasar is also a must read by William Manchester. Posted by: bestie21 at April 25, 2015 05:12 PM (qifmL) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.0489 seconds. |
