I was very touched by what the minister said about me on stage in Perth, but I was even more touched by what she said to the surviving editorial staff at Charlie Hebdo. I mentioned in that Trudeau post an upcoming engagement I'm doing on the Continent later this year and how I couldn't understand why they'd asked me - until I remembered that everyone ahead of me on the invitation list is either dead or in hiding. So the symbolism of what [Australian foreign minister] Julie Bishop chose to do is valuable and important - and stands in splendid contrast to the hollow pomposity of John Kerry and his stooge James Taylor.And "Love your work" is a better expression of solidarity than "#JeSuisCharlie".

Art of Manliness Presents The Winston Churchill School of Adulthood
So I happened across this set of articles a few weeks ago and I have to say it's one of the best reads available on the internets for men. And it's free. They really ought to put these together and publish it as a book. And then charge good money for it.
Here Brett McKay, who runs the website The Art of Manliness has written a sequence of articles laying out how to be a man in full and lead a satisfying, accomplished life. A lot of it I think the morons will recognize as hard-won wisdom and things we've known to be true in our hearts even if we've never verbalized them - or always fully followed them.
Each article as well as the entire series is based on the life of Winston Churchill and in particular how he dealt with various challenges in life and created the means to overcome them, thrive and do great things. But the key word is create. Churchill was given some gifts and some (many) flaws and had a very inauspicious beginning in life and as a man - but he chose to make himself into the man he ultimately wanted to be and that allowed to him to create the life he wanted to lead.
Now in many ways Churchill was sui generis and likely 99.97% of men could never hope to match his accomplishments. But his methods, philosophies, and manner of living life are available to most if not all men. So rather than trying to be Churchill instead aim for maybe adding 5% more Churchill into your life. You life may become happier but almost certainly it will become more satisfying and productive.

This set of articles is targeted for men in their 20s. I think guys from say age 16 to 23 would get the absolute most from it and maybe find themselves inspired and directed. But even older middle-aged dudes like yours truly will still get a lot from it. Hell it's inspired me after reading it and made me think a lot about how my life is and how I'd like to be.
So much so that I've decided to in Churchill's parlance to take action this day: So I've decided to go to Iceland.
Why? Because I've been wanting to go there for almost 30 years. But the circumstances have never been right to do so. So I have decided to just make the circumstances be right. So I'm going and I'm going to do it in the next two weeks. And I intend to enjoy the hell out it. And when I come back I also intend to make some other structural, positive changes in my life.
Housekeeping Note: I will in London next week for business and then the next week in Iceland doing what I want. So no ONTs from me for two weeks.

The strategy of "making them live up to their own book of rules" is frequently mentioned and discussed these days at Breitbart.com, Instapundit, Ace of Spades, and just about every other conservative website and blog.James O'Keefe, the activist and journalist behind the famous ACORN videos, articulated the approach directly: "The Left doesn't care about the laws or the rules. They are hypocrites, and the only way to win is to make them live up to their book of rules. I have found that the only thing they care about is racism, sexism and exploitation."
Not to take away from O'Keefe's work, which generates must-watch videos and scandal-inspired resignations with metronomic regularity, but there may be a flaw in this strategy. Ultimately, not that many liberals care whether their brethren are following their own book of rules. They've demonstrated a remarkable acceptance for one another's hypocrisy.
...Many progressives organize their worldview in the reverse order: They pick the good people - themselves - and everything else is negotiable. And as it's currently practiced, liberalism doesn't really require much of anything. Or, when liberalism starts asking sacrifices and commitments of its adherents beyond liking and sharing on Facebook, the energy and enthusiasm disappear. Close observers of Obamacare have noticed that the Millennials and other young people who voted for Obama in droves aren't willing to pay several hundred dollars a month for health insurance.
The currency of progressivism isn't policies, and it certainly isn't results. It's emotions.

In LA, to get away fast, you need a freeway. There are only a few and when the cops here that a bank is robbed, they go to the entrance ramps and wait for the vehicle matching the description to come by. Also, bank robbers will use vans with barrels of water in the back. They dump the money sacks into the water so when the dye pack explodes, it doesnt get every where.
And that completes my knowledge of bank robbery.

Went to a Mexican place yesterday in Lakewood, not that far from me, called Adobo Taco Grill. Walked in and was... a little taken aback. Relatively small room behind the door, with an entire quarter taken up for the kitchen, and the rest was some small tables to eat at, a table with a kettle full of beans (DIY if you want 'em on your plate) and another small cart full of produce mixes and salsas to put on your taco. Oh, and the menu was written in chalk on a blackboarded wall, and was all of 20 words long. Got two carne asada tacos and a cherry coke for less than $6.
Then today, I went to another place further away in Cerritos called Amor y Tacos. Getting tons of raves. Walked in and much bigger, much more decor, and a three-page menu full of autentico! Oaxacan recipes and what have you. Had the same thing: a plate of carne asada tacos, but they also bring a bowl of rice and beans (they're in the same bowl) right to you as well. Amor cost me $16 including the tip to eat there.
Who had the better meal? The cheaper place: Adobo. Just goes to show...

Last week, though, when circumstances brought me there (hanging out with a friend and her two kids who love that place), I tried their new Jalapeno McDouble and it did not give me any... issues... the next day. It was a pretty good burger, too, surprisingly.
So, I can recommend that burger while it's still around.

The word on the dude street about icelandic chicks is that they have a lot of hotties especially of the blond-blue-eyed type, are traditional in many ways yet also uninhibited, and are generally educated and fully fluent in english. So score!
But the catch is that should you lure one away to your home country, quite often they start pining for the fjords of their native land after a few years. And the homesickness may be too much to bear.

Iceland is a really neat place to visit. Everyone Speaks English and is super nice. Reykjavik only has a population of 300k and it's very much like a college town.
If you are out to party with locals, don't start drinking after dinner. Locals show up to the bars 12:30-1:00 AM (Bars close at 4). Until Recently they had Prohibition (Drunken Vikings are things to worry about. Rapey!), so everyone gets liquored up at home (Plus bars are very expensive, I easily spend a grand at bars in 5 days), and then goes to the bar. I'm a smoker so I know what was going on in the streets. Suddenly at 12:30 AM it went fucking mental.
They have crazy tolerances. I watched them take the fucking pepsi challenge with my Scottish Friends. It was a draw and I don't remember a fucking thing.

Out in the real world, there is a thing known as a "Career Limiting Move" -- or "CLM".
I have seen, with my own eyes, CLMs such as watching porn at work; inspecting parts and taking rejected ones home to sell as scrap; leaving a FedEx'd check for 1/3 of the year's revenues on the counter of a catering truck instead of running it to accounting, as directed; or backdating review signoffs to avoid censure for taking vacation.

The hiring managers some comments back were entirely correct in saying that the signers of this statement were limiting their future careers. Not because they were passionate and wrong -- but because it nullifies their reason for being at Oberlin in the first place.
I hope your fellow students and alumni let you know how much they resent the shadow you are casting upon their degrees.

I've been to Arlington just once. I don't have any close kin there, myself, but I'd really hoped to visit the final resting place of the father of a friend -- give him word of how his son was doing, let him know he was not forgotten.
It was an impulse thing -- we were visiting Arlington, anyway -- but I was a bit upset when the local finder system widget came up empty. There's still a conversation waiting to happen, that I hope may happen someday.
Until I can do my little part, I know he lies there in good company.

The solution is so simple I'm surprised it hasn't got 200 years of court cases to support it -- burning or trampling the flag is political speech, and the government has no place in suppressing or criminalizing such. BTW, I caught Dana Perino talking about what a swell, nice guy Joe Biden is last night when she was promoting her new book on Fox. Aw, shucks, he's just a sweetheart, according to Dana. Like a lot of Dems, really. Funny, I never hear any Dems talking about what great people Republicans are.
