Robert Downey Jr. Walks Out of Interview After Reporter Badgers Him On Whether Or Not He's a Liberal, or Still Does Drugs

He doesn't want to say whether he's a liberal or Republican or whatever, which I usually take to be a Good Sign.

He's pretty evasive on it all, actually. I came in expecting to think the reporter was out of bounds, but I really don't think he is -- the reporter is curious about Downey's politics. I confess, I am too, and I wanted to know the answer. So I can't really criticize the reporter.*

The reporter is asking about this old NYT profile of Downey, much-cited by conservatives.

“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics every since.”

(Suffice it to say he is not one of the Hollywood types who weeps over innocents trapped behind bars.)

...

On or around Independence Day in 2003, he stopped at a Burger King on the Pacific Coast Highway and threw all his drugs in the ocean. And while he was sitting there chewing on a burger, he decided he was done...

"If I see somebody who is throwing their life away with both hands and is raging around and destroying their family, I can't understand that person," he said. "I'm not in that sphere of activity anymore, and I don't understand it any more than I understood 10 or 20 years ago that somehow everything was going to turn out O.K. from this lousy, exotic and dark triple chapter of my life. I swear to God I don’t even really understand that planet anymore."

Mr. Downey, who has said that he woke up in a pool of his own blood a time or two when he was in prison, is a fighter. "Probably the biggest thing that Tony Stark and I have in common is the hardware of conflict, the courage under fire," he said, setting aside his lunch on a tray. "I don't really fit in so good outside the military bases with my mentality."

So the reporter asked him about this stuff, and getting clean -- fair questions, I think -- but Downey didn't want to talk about it and just wanted to promote the Avengers. Which is also fair enough. And then he walked.

What are his politics, anyway? This site says he both attended a fundraiser for Barack Obama in 2012, perhaps just at the behest of George Clooney, but also attended the Republican National Convention in 2008.

What he might be doing is trying to remain in the closet, or even go back into it, having come out before.

You just aren't allowed to be anything but Progressive Democrat in this country anymore.

* I realized that I was ready to take RDJr's side against the reporter, before watching the clip, and that this is just this sad habit that everyone is now in of feeling the need to immediately declare Tribal Allegiance.

In reality, nothing bad happened here: The reporter asked questions Downey didn't want to answer, and Downey decided not to answer. No one's objectively right: The reporter wanted him to talk about it, Downey didn't want to talk about it. Neither's wrong; both simply had different agendas.

But our current Dumb Age requires that every single dispute, like this one, have some kind of Black Hat Villain and White Hat Hero.

If he walked out because he doesn't think a two minute soundbite can do justice to his Life's Story, then yeah I'd so so too.

But if he walked out because he wasn't in the mood to relive his past or own up to his convictions, if he has any, then he's a putz.

16 Willowed in last thread... An update from the missing "protester" from VSU.

For those that don't remember this was last weeks walk on the flag protest.

As you may know, one of the protesters (Eric Sheppard) is now a fugitive from justice for bringing a gun on to campus and leaving it in his unattended book bag during yesterday's continued protest.

His father is now pleading for his son to turn himself in.

Young Mr. Sheppard was interviewed during first protest. He told the reporter "I am a terrorist towards white people. That flag represents white supremacy which is plaguing the entire earth, so when we step on that flag we are stepping on racism, white supremacy."

A true upstanding American.

Want to know why leftists are always on edge, always, stressed out, always trying to manipulate people and always trying to control and restrict everyone?

Because their worldview depends on other people behaving in accordance with the social and economic theories upon which leftism rests.

And yet, so often (almost always), the people don't behave as the theory requires them to behave. And so the left constantly goes into conniptions trying first of all to FORCE people to behave as they ought to behave, and secondly (when Plan 1 doesn't work out, as it never does) trying to distract attention away from the failure of the theory.

So, as a clear, simple example of how this has played out:

Pre-existing fact:
Minorities do poorly in school on average.

Leftist theory to explain it:
The kids perform poorly in school because they have low self-esteem, and because the teachers are wittingly or unwittingly racist.

Leftist solution, imposed nationwide, courtesy of the Gramsci/Obama forces:
Pound esteem-raising messages into the brains of minority students from Nursery School onward, while simultaneously hector teachers into taking anti-racism training courses and then pressuring teachers to inflate grades for minority students.

Result:
Minority kids now in general have sky-high self-esteem, and they usually get passed through any classes they attend, regardless of performance.

And then the rocky shores of reality dash the leftist dreams:

Theory Failure:
Despite having high self-esteem and easy grading criteria, minority kids now do WORSE in school than they did before the leftist program was imposed.

Ooops!

This drives the left completely insane. They scream and rage and try to make everyone not notice that they had already gotten all their dream proposals enacted, and they failed to work; the students did not behave as expected. This results in an eruption of blame-shifting and dissembling and finger-pointing and noise-making, all intended to hide the fact that the theory failed -- and to demand that it get amped up even further, to make it work this time.

Multiply this whole process a thousand times over -- jobs for terrorists, family reunions for MS-13 gang members, restorative justice for budding psychopaths, handouts for the poor, etc. etc. -- and you get a history of the Left's failure and the status of 2015 America -- which are by now the same thing.

I'm going to disagree with you Ace. Unless the terms of the interview were that anything was open, then the reporter was objectively wrong. When RDJ made clear he was there to promote a movie and didn't want to go down the rabbit hold the reporter wanted to go, he should have stopped and moved on. Yes he had an agenda (as did RDJ) but that does not make him right. RDJ's agenda was not a secret and the only reason to do the agenda was to promote the movie. His agenda was not to restore his image such that going into the past was necessary.

There's an old - and vile - saying in show biz:

Downey might not want to put that theory into practice. He's good at the b.o. (and no I'm not comparing him to Hitler) but he's still no Clint Eastwood.

As someone who has been in show biz going on 30 years, all I want is a steady and decent paycheck, with fat royalty checks coming in every year to support my life. To hell with an Oscar; if my livelihood is at stake I will shut up and say my lines. It's painful to have to take meetings and shit from people who have the values slightly beneath child rapist and the brains of a toddler, but it is what it is.

So, kudos to Downey. And since these interviews are strictly supposed to be about the film, the "reporter" was out of bounds with his questions, no matter how nice he was in phrasing them.

Yes, there are rules, sometimes very strictly enforced by the interviewee, sometimes by the money people behind it. The reporters are herded in, with set times, and usually clearly defined boundaries. So if, for example, you have Tom Cruise in front of you, you don't get to ask him about the gay stuff. You just don't, and if you try they will confiscate your footage, and you'll... as they say, never work in "this town" again.

I will always have a soft spot for A Knight's Tale; should have just been a silly RomCom set in Medieval England but the story and the cast elevates it to something really special. And you won't get this through a Netflix watch, but the commentary on the DVD is still one of the best of any movies I've heard. They talk about all the historically accurate things they put into the film and all the little behinds the scenes details, that stuff is crack to me so I love it.

Apparently there is a period of Chaucer's life unaccounted for in history, and the writers pretend this story fills in the gap of that period (he is one of the characters in the film.)

And I'm not ashamed to say that the first time I rewatched this after Heath Ledger died I cried a little. He does a great job in it. Just a fun film.

I'm tired of the media cabal trying to single handedly elect a Hollywood elite ruling class. It probably takes a certain lack of arrogance and self control to ease jump off that pedestal, good on Downey for having the will power to opt out.

Was told it would (finally) be delivered tomorrow and installed. Didn't hear from appliance store.

I called nearly an hour ago, and was told "Steve" would get back to me.

So far, nothing.

165 My take on it is this; It was probably clear up front that this was a promotional interview for the movie.

If the reporter wants to know his politics, invite him back for an interview with that as it's purpose.

Questions in interviews like this, like it or not, are ambush questions.

Actors especially, are aware of the damage the wrong politics can have on their work prospects. Not a single conservative or right leaning actor I've ever heard commenting on this has not confirmed that having the wrong politics in Hollywood has impacted their prospects.

166 >>>110 Ace - I think he was wrong for decency sake. I'm making the assumption that this was purely a movie promotion. It is simply not decent to do ambush interviews or push topics unrelated to the movie (product being promoted) particularly when the interviewee let it be known that he was not there to talk about it.

It was wrong because it was indecent.

...

i really don't think that asking someone about stuff they've willingly discussed before is really "ambushy" or unfair, though.

Again, I respect RDJr's right to not answer. but if i were an interviewer, these would have seemed like good questions to me.

It depends on what the rules were ahead of time. If he's on a press tour to promote the film then the questions are really supposed to be only about the film. Unless some other big unrelated news involving the actor is literally happening at the same time as the release. In which case, they'd definitely set preconditions.

some of you are presuming bad intent behind the interviewer's questions, assuming he wants to then hurt RDJr by running tape of the answers.

Like, I don't think that your guess that he's an asshole is a bad guess, but I would say it is just a guess, and thus, not having any actual reason to say "This guy was out to get RDJr,' we shouldn't say that he was.

yes, as i've said, if burt is right (and he sounds right), then this is not a profile or an in-depth interview, this is three minutes of fluff to run on the local news, and these interviewers know that going in.

-----

Ambushy may be the wrong word choice, but just because someone has talked about a topic at some point should not mean that it is fair game to always bring it up. There is some aspect of situational awareness.

Jay Leno interviewing Hugh Grant after a big scandal in which Hugh Grant was using Leno to repair his image is different from Hugh Grant promoting a movie today at a junket with a no name interviewer.

And simply because Hugh Grant talked about it in the past does not mean it is right to ask him about it now.

It is simply indecent to bring it up if all Hugh Grant is doing promoting a movie.

To go legal, objection relevance. If Hugh/ RDJ brings up the past on their own, then I guess they have opened the door.

Its not the worst aggresion, but one we should not promote.

If half of show biz were in the Eastwood/Sinise/Davi mold, then our reaction to Downey might very well have been "chill out dude, it's just a question."

For a general interview I would say you're right. But if you're at an interview specifically for talking about your most recent movie I would say no. And it was apparent that he was willing to give the guy a little leeway but when it kept going down those roads that was it.

But yeah it would be interesting to hear him talk about his drug recovery and all that. Politics less so for me because 24/7 politics sucks and more actors need to follow his example and shut up about them.

For me its enough that he's either conservative or just doesn't feel the need to shit all over half his audience like most of his hollywood cohorts do.

246 There are a lot of conservatives working in industries that are hostile toward their ideological bent who have no problem prosecuting the war on terror, but don't want to seem hostile to the first black president.

McCain was a Hawk, but he challenged Busb from time to time, notably on the surge. Many conservatives hate him, but a lot of people still respect him as a war hero.

Romney was unpopular with a lot of voters, because he was associated with Wall Street. That was the big difference between 2008 and 2012. I could see a lot of people feeling more comfortable with speaking out in favor of McCain v. Romney, especially someone who makes their money starring in pro military action films.

248 but i don't think celebrities should generally be protected from questions they don't feel like answering.

Now, in a junket setting, maybe these are inappropriate, but as a general matter, I think anyone has the right to ask anyone most anything. Certainly one can ask about *previously* discussed matters.

-----

I don't think my standard is as loose as yours. Decency doesn't end just because you are a celebrity - even one who has to do press junkets to promote your movie/product.

I suspect we just differ on where that line is.

When one self-censors for fear of being called racist, then the left has won. Not on facts, not on reason, not on the merits of any argument they might have but out of fear.

You cannot allow that to happen. Now, if you are in a work situation you can't really feel free to speak your mind in the first place, so just shut up, do your job and cash your paycheck. In the end, it ain't worth it. Especially nowadays. Jobs are scarce and getting scarcer.

283 Then you've got Downey sticking up for Mel Gibson
despite the general hatred of the man in Hollywood (9 parts from his
Christ movie and 1 part because of his drunken rants, let's be real
here). Downey has shown he's not just another trained liberal seal.

Posted by: Trich

Mel gave Downey a job after he got out of prison, when no one else would touch him. Because Mel does believe in forgiveness and reconciliation in life. Downey has never forgotten that.
And Jodie Foster speaks up for Mel, too. She was going through a rough patch in her life (I think it was heavy drinking), and Mel stood by her and helped her and looked out for her (I think it was during the filming of the Maverick movie).

They are not all scum, but the Hollywood system wants corporate conformity because they are promoting an image, and you risk much by stepping out of line and actually having independent thoughts, and saying them in public.

328 I'm well aware. What happened is this: mumr would come here and make comments about fascism or Stalin or genocide. And some people got annoyed that he seemed to be off topic all the time like that really matters.

Then mumr would occasionally make sarcastic remarks about how lightly the Left regarded genocide and those same people accused him of racism and used that as an excuse to get him banned.
Posted by: Soothsayer, Inc. -- The King Unwilling at April 22, 2015 05:50 PM (R/rAV)

No. He would repeatedly make random off-topic posts in the same thread and then he started posting racist comments on the blog. Now perhaps these were taken out of context but since he never interacted with anyone nor provided a contact email address, there was simply no way to know.

In addition he was warned about his behavior several times - which he completely ignored - and so he was banned. Since then he has justified his banning many, many, many times over.

I kept telling him STOP FUCKING MAKING MY BLOG YOUR BLOG. I told him ot collect his thoughts in one (1) comment and post it once (1nce), and he kept ignoring me, kept posting this shit right to my face:

...and more off topic musings about how the Devil is going to steal the souls of the unrighteous...

Now, why was he ignoring me? Out of defiance? No, he was ignoring me because he literally NEVER reads comments; he just spams threads with his obsessions.

But at that point I realized, "Fuck this, he will never stop."

So I banned him. Not anyone else. ME. And not for racism.

But because this is MY BLOG, for the use of commenters to discuss news of the day and chat with each other, not for some obsessive to come in here and spam threads like it's his own private Twitter Feed.

Since then, he has spammed my email (seriously, spammed, one message after another) accusing me of divulging his 'private information" -- which I do not have; I have literally no idea who he is or what state he's in -- and accusing me of trying to keep him from "anna."

405 One more RDJ thought. It was either before or after Avengers, but I read interviews with both Chris Evans and RDJ. It was a fascinating look at contrasts.

Both are in the same massively successful franchise, with individual and group movies. Evans spends the interview not so subtly whining about the pressures of fame and success, and came across as resentful that he has to do the Hollywood things you do when you are in a huge franchise that pays you gobs of money. All he wants is to get out of it as soon as he can and make little indie films the rest of his life. (And if hints about where Civil Wars is going are accurate that might just happen.)

RDJ was the exact opposite. You could tell he was overjoyed to be in this situation, and could not be more excited about the franchise, or more gracious about his success and the opportunities it gives him. I'm sure some of that is due to seeing the rock bottom side of Hollywood where your career looks dead, and greatly appreciating the circumstances his life is in now. Having a little more perspective and wisdom.

Came away from both loving RDJ a little bit more, and giving Evans major side eye.

What people don't get is that Sad Puppies is really small. TINY. It's literally just a couple dozen people. The only reason they've had any success this year is because the Hugo Awards are such an insular group, it only needed a few dozen voters to make a difference.

Here's the thing- the anti-puppy, social justice bullies have the media on their side. They have Slate, Gawker, NPR, Entertainment Weekly- all these big sites making up their own false narrative. It's not likely the Sad Puppies people will ever be able to do this again. Not unless someone out there gets serious about promoting them. They need an Adam Baldwin or something for signal boost. Otherwise- not happening.

And there is nothing inevitable about this. This is something that is being done to us.

European countries are also being flooded with alien immigrants who have no regard for the native culture.

To be fair, the prelim autopsy report stated that his spinal cord just below the neck was approximately 80% severed. And he was recorded as stepping into the police van on his own, so at that point in time, his spinal cord is presumed to be unsevered.

So...there is some area for concern there.

Or am I thinking about a different event?

486 the 'reporter' was a little bitch trying to make a name for himself by bringing downey down.

downey has had his personal issues, but seems to be doing well now. he's got this gigantic movie franchise behind, looking to him to promote it and make money. in other words, he's doing his job.

notice how downey is looking left for guidance. i suspect his publicist and the movie publicist gave him the bailout signal. this little bitch reporter deserved less than even this consideration.

also, see early on in the interview how he tried to co-opt downey by playing to him and trying to establish a false rapport with him. later, downey's face changes along with his breathing...you can see him sussing this asshat out.

494 "Or am I thinking about a different event?"

Same event.
But....what has been edited out is the final moments, literally one to two seconds of video, where once he is placed on the bumper of the van, he stands up on both legs, ducks down, and steps into the van.
That portion of the video is usually not shown, and is so brief, that even if seen, it fails to register the significance of seeing him stand upright, and step in.

I heard a rumor, maybe here, that RDJ told the studio he won't be in Iron Man 4 until they agree to let Mel Gibson direct it. No clue if that's true, but...

1) very cool to stand up for a friend if true, do him the career favor Gibson did for him,
2), he's RDJ, I could see him actually making a demand like that and the studios seriously having to consider, and
3) How good action-wise could a Gibson-directed Marvel movie potentially be?! Pretty good, it really isn't a bad idea.

505 Long time lurker here.
Just had a thought. Specifically to the left but did for thought about anyone's world view in general.
Not everyone has a life similar to yours. I mean wholly different to the point where they aren't aware someone who lives the way you do actually exists.
There are fulfilled, happy people who have hopes dreams and ambitions. Their lifestyle is incompatible with yours. You will never meet them, never even hear about them or encounter acknowledgment of their existence. But the choices you make are going to impact their lives.
I don't know where else to go with this but does anyone think of how trivially important a lot of the progressive world view actually is to those who live outside of it?
Yet how drastically they want to change the world?

Just after a nonverbal exchange with his off camera handlers, RDJ says something like " Your foot is kinda twitching there, you better hurry up and ask your next question"... then glares with a faint hint of a smirk. Burn.

Posted by: S2 at April 22, 2015 07:14 PM (UsTB9)

509 RDJ is not only a great actor (see Chaplin as an example), but also a
really loyal friend. He got a major award back in 2011 and he not only
insisted that Mel Gibson be the presenter but used most of his speech to
try and help Gibson after the crapfest that was the breakup with his
baby-mama.

RDJ seems
like a really good guy and fairly laid back but he is allowed to have
his own private thoughts that he does not have to explain to random
asshole reporters... especially on a press junket where the topic is
supposed to be the movie and not himself.

I think that ace is right in that these questions aren't actually out of bounds for an interviewer to ask. And that is aces point. But I think that they are out of bounds for the type of interview this was supposed to be.

Posted by: dick cheney at April 22, 2015 07:23 PM (hTeQK)

513 #510. i would agree that these questions would be ok in an open interview. but i suspect (can't prove) that this interview was only granted to promote the movie. these movies are cash generating factories. nothing too much is left for chance. RDJ was working - looked left, got the bailout sign, and departed - while expressing some indignation - without saying anything really bad. but that was the point, wasn't it - get RDJ to explode. that way, he's not worth so much in hollywood if he's a loose cannon.

it's about kneecapping your opponents through revenue.

I think you're being too hard on yourself on this one, Ace. Given that reporters tend to be complete and utter jackasses most of the time, the fact that you assumed that this was likely the case in advance is in large part the result of learned experience, not necessarily a tribal affiliation issue.
