Bloomberg: WH and State Department "Dismissive" About Plight of Americans Stranded in Yemen; Suggest That Being There Is Their Own Fault

That may or may not be true, and it may be true that rescuing a large group of people, scattered all over the country, is too dangerous for both the rescuers and the rescuees.

But the tone. The tone of "dismissal."

The WH and State Department do not care about US citizens stuck in Yemen; they only care about having to answer questions about their lack of action. That is, they only care about themselves, as they only cared about themselves during the Benghazi attack; those killed in Benghazi were not important as human beings, but merely as headaches and complications for Obama and Hillary.

And so too now are US citizens in Yemen. The Administration reacts with its typical mix of hostility, defensiveness, and blame-shifting when asked about yet another of their failures.

Americans Trapped in Yemen? U.S. Says 'Good Luck'

16 APR 22, 2015 6:00 AM EDT

By Josh Rogin

...

Yet, the tone from White House and State Department spokespeople when asked by reporters about the lack of action has often seemed dismissive; the official response has been to point to previous State Department travel warnings about the dangers in Yemen, which seems like blaming the U.S. citizens for being there in the first place. Many of these people are Yemeni immigrants or the children of immigrants who returned to see their families.

"We are giving Americans opportunities -- information about opportunities, I should say -- to use other methods of leaving Yemen, and that's why we have been very clear since the mid-1990s that people should not travel to Yemen," State Department acting spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters Monday.

A reporter pointed out that one of the State Department’s absolute highest responsibilities is protecting U.S. citizens abroad.

"Absolutely," Harf responded. "That's why we have been telling them not to go to Yemen."

The actual information that the State Department has been sending U.S.-citizens in Yemen has been spotty, vague and unhelpful, according to Ayoub. Random alerts have pointed Americans to travel great distances for opportunities to leave the country without any assurances they would be successful when they get there.

"The U.S. government has been informed that there is another Indian naval ship that will leave from Hodeidah on April 12, arriving in Djibouti on April 13," an April 11 emergency message for U.S. citizens stated. "We have been told that U.S. citizens are welcome and should get to Hodeidah as soon as possible. Unfortunately we have no information on who to contact to board this ship."

Ayoub said one recipient of this alert was a 12-year old girl who lived six to eight hours away from the destination. With no means to make the journey through an active war zone, she was unable to take the State Department’s advice.

It seems that the department’s excuses for not directly rescuing Americans in Yemen are disappearing quickly. Not only is there a temporary ceasefire between the Saudi-backed government and the Houthis, there’s even a new U.S. Naval flotilla in the Gulf of Aden, including an aircraft carrier, to assist in any rescue operation.

Incidentally, when the capital was overrun a couple of months ago and US diplomatic and military personnel were under direct threat, the Administration squashed the story and demanded the media not report on it, when US personnel were possibly in harm's way.

Of course, the media then continued to not report on it.

This is an incompetent, disastrous presidency, but full of ego and narcissism and venom, and they get very angry when it is pointed out that their estimates of their own competencies does not match physical reality.

32 As someone who has some 'insight' into this, there is NO WAY for us to conduct any kind of coordinated 'rescue' of these people. Period.

There are over 78,000 American passport holders there; where do we pick from? How many would try to come over, and not be some 'agent' of some kind, to do us harm when we would try to extract some?

Force Majure was declared in Yemen some months ago; any company that was sponsoring/hiring/putting Americans there have the responsibility to remove American employees, usually under terms of contracts. If an American has gone over on their own accord, it is not always feasible for us to rescue/protect you- in this case, entirely due to numbers.

Did we rescue anyone in Syria?

Have we extracted Americans in Iraq (other than defense-related) ?

I'm not defending the admin in any way. I'm just bringing to light the reality of the situation there- it ain't good.

During Gaddafi's overthrow of King Indris in 1969 the American Govt evacuated us using the Air Force. Based on States reasoning, we would have been abandoned.

Once upon a time, in the not too distant past, the US Govt actually took an interest and protected American's who were working in other Nations.

And wasn't it Obama's Administration who kept proclaiming that Yemen is a success story...right up until the country fell? The State Dept bears quite a bit of responsibility for this fiasco.

55 Listening tours (or sessions) are supposed to add a little fabric softener to a politician's starchy image, buffing their scaly reptilian exteriors down to kid-leather smoothness. The technique worked for Clinton in New York, where booking upstate listening stops helped her win a Senate seat in 2000. Listening is the epitome of unrunning, allowing a candidate to do nothing at all but remain operational. Today, Clinton is listening in New Hampshire, and a full-time physician has been assigned to her care, lest the pure calm of bland political chitchat turn her life signs negative and she unruns herself to death.

83 You make a choice going to these types of countries today. That is one of the risks.

I understand we protect Americans and that seems to be a platitude nowadays. But this isn't Benghazi or even similar.

People go back to a dangerous country to visit family. Then they overstay the visit when things get dicey. Then suddenly they want us to launch a military mission and put other people's lives at stake for their selfishness.

It's about personal responsibility and choices. I don't want my brother to die for your stupidity, even though he may do just that and not question it.

Frankly, I'm a little sick of people who immigrate and use that status as some kind of get out of jail free card where our military plays the role of limo driver. That ain't how it works.

Time to go all Godwin with this

GRAMMAR NAZI ALERT

This isn't just for Ace -- this is for everyone on the Internet, as I see this error constantly now, even in supposedly professionally edited MSM news articles:

For some reason, people have forgotten about the existence of the word "quash," which has now been subsumed by the more normal-seeming -- but differently defined -- word "squash."

To clarify:

"squash" means to squish or crush or flatten:

"quash" means "to put down or suppress completely; quell; subdue: to make void, annul, or set aside (a law, indictment, decision, etc.)."

But if you look at various online dictionaries now, they will include "quash" as one of the definitions of squash, because the mix up of the two words has become too commonplace to ignore.

Put in an easy to understand Obama-context:

Obama tries to squash his political opponents.

Obama tries to quash unflattering news stories.

181 I agree entirely, that they are on their own. Don't go into a warzone if you don't intend to go to war. Seems pretty simple to me. And besides, I don't want to see any guys getting dragged out of helicopters and hung from lampposts for a bunch of hate-America-Americans. They are Obamas' people, all of them voted for him and burned the flag on their last opportunity , so let him go lead a rescue mission and leave little Tommy Smith from Wayback County, Ohio, safe aboard ship for a change. I am so tired of his fake sadness at the loss of our American-American children, while he gloats over the diminishment of our culture.

p.s. Painting a red line in the sand, in the middle of the ocean, gives the Puke such a great out. ... Oh, they just slipped past and we couldn't stop them ... oh, my..

78,000 American passport holders, I did not know there were that many. That actually weakens your argument. Hell the Chinese managed to evacuate their people.

Then your conclusion- that if the Obama Administration says something about the issue it might become legally binding is the weakest point of all. Really laughable and sad at the same time that something that lacking in honor is considered a legitimate excuse for this administration.

A government has a duty first to its citizens, imagined future legal entanglements are a laughable priority.
