Well on the way, head in a cloud
The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him
Or the sound he appears to make
And he never seems to notice

But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning around

And nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do
And he never shows his feelings

But the fool on the hill

Only liberals believe that giving someone the trappings of something makes them equivalent to those who earned those trappings. At some level, they get this: they don't give the Cubs World Series rings, for example. So the cargo cult doesn't extend THAT far.

I'm tempting the barrel by pasting this, but I've always like this one, and unfortunately it applies to many of the GOP politicians, much less lying liars like Obama: Lyrics to Hollow Man (Mark Erelli)

They picked another one off the vine

Scooped out the seeds in the back of his mind

Filled up his head with half-truths and lies

And put the finishing touch on the perfect disguise

They rolled out a carpet and threw a parade

Convinced everyone he had something to say

They smiled as they watched from the two-way mirror

As he told all the people what they wanted to hear

CHORUS

Hey, have you heard the story?

It's the same old song, same old dance

Hey, he's bound for glory

He ain't nothing but a hollow man

He basked in the glow of the fortune and fame

Even threw the first pitch at the World Series game

He always maintained he had nothing to hide

No one ever suspected he was empty inside

CHORUS

Hey, he don't know what he's doing

They set him up so high, he never had a chance

Hey, you can see right through him

He ain't nothing but a hollow man

Then came the day his cover was blown

Their little Frankenstein monster got out of control

So he looked to the ones who had saved him before

Only to find that they'd changed all the locks on the doors

The press circled in with blood in their eyes

Each one wanting a piece of his shallow disguise

And they cast him aside when from glory he fell

Now he's just another bum with a story to tell

CHORUS

Hey, he's less than zero

The greater the height, the harder you land

Ain't it hard when you find your hero

Ain't nothing but a hollow man

94 I hate the concept of a Congress "doing its job." It is not a job. It doesn't have a job.

No, Congress has a job. They're supposed to pass a budget, stomp mudholes in presidential appointees, & impeach dick-sucking Kenyans.

-----

Language matters. We should not demand that Congress do its job. Because that implies that Congress must always be doing something - usually to our detriment. Congress should represent the people and the states (well they used to represent the states). They are not there to do any sort of job. I really hate that language. It perverts their function and it perverts our understanding of who they are.

Well, what they do is give huge federal and state grants to the shitty schools so that they can "buy technology" and get on the same level as the good schools.

So the shitty schools are always throwing around huge amounts of money on shit like laptops that usually end up in carts in a closet somewhere or destroyed.

..And shitty schools always buy the way overpriced accidental damage warranties, which are VERY lucrative for the salesperson.

As I have said for years. All a good school needs is four walls and a chalkboard. All this other stuff is crap. They don't need new textbooks. Math has not changed much in the past 25 years. Plato's writings haven't changed much in the past 25 - 2500 years.

Its all crap. Its wasteful. Its distracting.

If I had Koch type money, I would spend it on creating a real educational model for poor children. My goal would be to go to a large city and offer a real and free education to anyone who needs it and try to undermine a large city school district.

Funny story... Can't mention the school district because it would (easily) tie back to my company... but one inner city school district bought several million dollars in laptops from my company.

Within a week or two, hundreds of devices were missing.

Turns out both the students AND the teachers had been pawning them, selling them on craigslist, ebay, whatever. Basically started selling them the day they were issued to them.

AND they all had "property of xyz school district" laser etched on their covers. Didn't matter.

It was pretty... funny.

I'm sure it happens in every city though.

Wow.

Back in 2003 the Wash Times did an expose on DC public school spending. It was riddled with corruption and theft at all levels of administration. One of the scams involved a guy who sold computers and office equipment to the school (he was somehow related to the schools buyer and didn't even have a shop). He would bill an astronomical amount, the buyer would pay, and then they'd split the cash. In jus one instance of the scam, a school had one $150 fax machine, but the guy "sold"/invoiced them four at $200/each and then invoiced them thousands more in repair work over the course of a year. Imagine that for every school in the district and it adds up.

I just always think of this when I hear someone crowing that the schools just need more money to invest in technology blah, blah, blah

Oh yeah I see it all the time.

I'll come in with the lowest price on an RFP, but it will get rewarded to someone else who came in much higher who has no webpage and a gmail email address.

The purchasers / IT staff can write the RFP in such a way that they can award it to whoever they want.

So if they have a brother in law reselling used Dells out of the back of a mini van, they can write it so that he wins.

The bigger scam though is the used computers. Schools cycle through desktops in 3-5 years, then they're considered trash. Obviously they still have some useful life in them, so what tech directors do is contract with a "recycler" who refurbs and resells the computers, but bills the school to "destroy" them.

I assume the tech director gets a cut on the back end.

There have been some cases in the news where IT people have made tens of thousands of dollars cash doing this.

The PROBLEM is that our good ol' GOPe will read that as, "it's time to pivot to the center. We need to win more moderates." which is really their end goal. To get a new base that will let them do their thing and not bother them.

No, the push is because of Common Core.

Common Core requires all standardized tests be taken online.

Most schools don't have enough computer labs to have the entire 6th grade or whatever take the test at the same time.

So they have to buy laptops.

Then they realize they dont have the wireless infrastructure to support 1000 laptops all at once.

So they have to buy access points.

Then they realize the bottleneck is the switches.

So they have to buy switches

etc, etc, etc

In unrelated news, HP, Cisco and Google were HUGE backers of common core.

248 The definition of sapiosexual is a person who finds intelligence to be the most sexually attractive characteristic of another person.

Sapiosexual is a new social device people use to make themselves appear deeper than what they really are.

Sapiosexual (n): a person who is sexually attracted to intelligence in others. Sapiosexual (adj): of, or relating to, finding intellectual stimulation sexually arousing.
"I want an incisive, inquisitive, insightful, irreverent mind. I want
someone for whom philosophical discussion is foreplay. I want someone
who sometimes makes me go ouch due to their wit and evil sense of humor.
I want someone that I can reach out and touch randomly. I want someone I
can cuddle with.

I decided all that means that I am sapiosexual."

'Sapiosexual' has to be one of the stupidest sexual 'identities' to come along in years.

Or at least, thats a solution I see sold in to schools a lot.

Makes it easier to find the machines when they show up formatted in a pawn shop.

Of course, it only pings when its connected to the internet, so it's not too difficult to wipe the hard drive, sell the machine, and be long gone before someone realizes the laptop was stolen.

Also, of COURSE the kids can get around any software applications designed to thwart kids playing games or going on facebook or whatever.

Oh, and if you don't want to pay for internet service, tell your school district you can't afford it.

Then they have to (well, depends on the state, but most do, even if not required) pay for 4G or LTE on your school issued laptop so that you can browse the web from home, too.

And boy does Verizon make a fuckton of money off that service. That's were the good commission checks are. It's a reoccurring thing. Commission every month on $100,000 in LTE charges... big money.

316 What's odd is Clinton's use of the word "toppling." The common synonyms for "topple" are: overthrow, oust, unseat, overturn, bring down, defeat, get rid of, dislodge, eject. The term is thus a revolutionary one -- King Louis XVI, Czar Nicholas II, and the Shah of Iran were toppled.

Clinton didn't say she wants to increase taxes on the wealthiest one percent or that she wants to "hold them more accountable," whatever that might mean. She called for their overthrow.

Although if I designed it, I'd use port :8080 or something common that would make it very difficult to block said port and still use the internet.

You're assuming it can't switch ports when it finds itself blocked.

Real player would do this back in circa 1999: if it found its preferred phone-home port(s) blocked it would just use 80. Now, you could block all connections to all servers used by computrace, but you'd have to know them. Or, you could block all traffic except to a VPN or some proxy & pray that computrace didn't have a VPN/proxy discovery built in.

The Internet was a far better place when computers were expensive and net access was restricted to high end research universities and major corporations.

343 Tell me who the target audience for this list?

If these things had actually been done, Conservatives would applaud. But since it's obvious they've a.) accomplished none of these things and b.) people with a brain (that's us) know they've not accomplished these things, then this list must be for a different audience.

Now, the Dem LIV crowd may be easily snookered by such lies but they don't necessarily WANT to see the items on this list accomplished so that can't be the audience either.

The higher functioning, self-serving Leftist neither wants these things nor believes these things have been done by the GOP in any case, so that group can't be the audience either.

This just leaves one group, conservative leaning LIVs. That is not exactly the biggest audience anymore.

So it appears that the GOPe marketing people are just idiots. If you don't know to whom you are marketing, then you just make yourself look like dolts.

350 For 4+ years the refrain was "Party of No," with success defined as to "do something," etc. Since most Americans are ignorant of what exactly the policies, politics, and debates are about....those lines resonated with many, particularly establishment types. So now the GOP pursues "success" by "doing stuff"with marginal, at best, policy orpolitical merit....and regardless whether a thing has actually been done! The idea is to win a political argument that the GOP is doing stuff. The GOP has been primed by 4+ years of Obama's machinations and this is the easiest, laziest route, since the other route is a cohesive effort to fight back and accomplishment real but hard-earned victories. The fear of political risk deters the latter option. So some would grudingly say this is smart, that everything is about 2016...and electing Jeb Bush....I know...I know...
