Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (4-21-2015)Of course, presidential lawlessness is a special case. Because the president controls not only the nation's law enforcement apparatus but also its military, it's pretty hard to call him to account. But what about the rest of us? If presidents can violate the law, why can't we? Kurt Schlichter: Why Liberals May Regret Their New Rules That photo is me about ten years ago, standing in the ruins of a land where people rejected the rule of law in favor of the rule of force. I think a lot about my year-long deployment to Kosovo these days. I think a lot about people today who, for short term political points, cavalierly disregard the rules, laws and norms that made America what it is. I think a lot about how liberals, especially those who boo God, should pray to Him that those rules, laws and norms are restored. When you block all normal means of dissent, whether by ignoring the political will of you opponents or using the media to mock and abuse them, you build up the pressure. In 30+ years as an active conservative, I've never heard people so angry, so frustrated, so fed up. These emotions are supposed to be dissipated by normal political processes. But liberals are bottling them up. And they will blow. It's only a matter of how. I'm not advocating violence - I am warning liberals that they are setting the conditions for violence. Such Sweet, Sweet, Depressing Irony Christina Hoff Sommers speaks at Oberlin College, sets off trigger warnings, hysteria among know-nothing student snowflake-enforcers. Oberlin activists had "safe space" for those triggered by my talk.Oberlin admin. provided police security to protect me from safe spacers. 300+ students attended my Oberlin talk.Others retreated to nearby "safe room" for protection from my apparently dangerous ideas. Small Woodland Creatures: Friend or Foe? 6 of Ben Franklin's Greatest Hoaxes and Pranks The first edition of Poor Richard's Almanack, published in 1733, established an ongoing prank on Titan Leeds, an astrologer, competing almanac publisher, and frenemy of Ben Franklin. Under the pseudonym Poor Richard Saunders, Franklin predicted Leeds's death and encouraged readers to stick around to see if his prognostication was right. The feud that followed sold a lot of pamphlets, benefiting both publishers. And this: Franklin's last hurrah, just 25 days before his death in 1790, was to challenge slavery. In a letter to The Federal Gazette written under the name Historicus, Franklin related the fictional tale of Sidi Mehemet Ibrahim, an Algerian potentate who fought for the enslavement of Christians by Muslims in the late 1680s. The tyrant's inhumane pro-slavery arguments just so happened to echo those made by anti-abolitionist Congressman James Jackson of Georgia. Touché! Franklin didn't live to see slavery abolished, but we'd be kidding ourselves if we said he had nothing to do with it. Hero Disrupts the Shaming Narrative Look at that face. Got there a couple of minutes late, waited over two hours, decided to go home and try again later. At least this way *my* agent has seen the location and can make some rational guesses as to what to expect re:rent and such.

Personally, I think the left wants to nationalize the police force and also sick the military on any political opponents. In addition, I am convinced that they are intentionally trying to tick people off. They are dividing the country black vs. white, men vs. women, rich vs. poor, city vs. country. But I was told once by a leftist activist the following:
The constitution is not a legal document - thus they don't care about it - Obama doesn't recognize it There is a world wide socialist government coming - if you don't like it get off of the planet you right wingers won't do anything. You'll fall into line. Obama was upfront about who he was. If people weren't listening they are too stupid and deserve what they get. ...and the Republican party thinks they can make deals with the radical rabid left. Looking at the theme of this ONT--If you folks finally do get fed up and start a little fight, my advice is that if you let the struggle be steered by current national GOP types--absent some Jeff Sessions-type behavior on their part as things heated up--then you will well deserve whatever sellout you eventually get. And the 'slaughter' that would follow.
That is because right now they are figuring out how best to triangulate off of you--and some are. You think they are going to be Spartacus, leading the slave revolt? Franklin, finally ticked off at his treatment at the hands of London's elite? Hardly. Most would not be able to make the transition--too many are in it for the power the current system can offer, not for a cause. For those that know the American Revolution---too many are going to be Thomas Hutchinson at the end of the day. They'll take the power the current system seems to offer, thank you very much. But while tempers are ready enough, I still think there is a ways to go before anything like this becomes an issue. And I have no idea how it would start, and emphatically feel it is either a mass moment, or better none at all. And the people may roar out two or three more times via the vote, as they did the election last, and finally quell the problem. But the idea the GOP would be helping you if push really needed to come to shove? Right. They'd be the most worthless asset you had. Posted by: Mistress Overdone It's a little bit more slick than obvious takeovers of state powers. They don't have to, and haven't had to for a while. Block grants to states effectively carrot-and-stick bend the states to the Federal will. So nationalize state/local police? Perish the tea-party/reactionary/constitutional/antiquated thought. State grants are all predicated upon a few teeny-tiny things that can be revoked at a moments notice, and bingo. We have compliance. No muss, no fuss. No conspiracy needed. I fear greatly that a civil war will occur in this country--maybe not in my lifetime, but within a generation or two. I don't think a national divorce is possible--simply because of geography. Look at a map of voting patterns. You've got swaths of blue surrounded by red. Chicago, New York, and California would be isolated from another. Even in a red state like Texas, Houston, Dallas, and Austin would essentially be islands surrounded by hostile territory.

I'd like to believe that Obama's 2008 election was an aberration. You had the perfect storm that worked against the GOP--it's difficult for one party to hold on to the White House for three consecutive terms. Then you had the financial meltdown just six weeks before the election, and, fair or not, the country blamed it on the Republicans.
In 2012....well, I actually think Romney would have made a great president. But he might be the lousiest campaigner ever. He's actually a good and charitable man, but he let himself be painted as out of touch with populace. 2016 will be the real test. It's the Democrats who have the difficult challenge of holding the WH for three consecutive terms. If this country elects Hillary, who everyone, including LIV know is corrupt and a liar, well then, I fear this great nation will have passed the point of no return. There are too many Americans that have fallen for leftists ideas and too many other Americans that are somehow vested in big government. Good luck CC. And good luck to us all - that O-care may be repealed, and the accumulated idiocy, theft, and rent-seeking of decades that hang like an anchor around so much medical activity is obliterated (nope, not holding out much hope for any of this).
Of course I completely sympathize with everything Schlichter wrote, and I can't magically see the future, but ..... Given all the factors - history, culture, geography, inertia - I don't see any chance of significant violent conflict along political lines. And I doubt that the state's armed employees have within them much capacity to think and do big things - unionized time-servers and the dynamic they represent more than balance out the Americans in those ranks. And present day offers not a scintilla of evidence that the nation as a whole just won't roll over and continue "taking it". The growth of state power (often illegitimate, unconstitutional, pernicious, and contrary to all previous American cultural norms) has seen essentially no interruption for 3 generations. The guard rails are gone. The judiciary is a rogue illegitimate authoritarian element of its own. No sign it will be reigned in. Elections (mostly) are irrelevant - a result of institutional rot and the degraded state of the political class. See no chance of any change in trajectory. Even a lot of libs are frankly on board with the "two Americas" concept. Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere, who pretty much hates conservatives and midwesterners, has embraced the idea at his blog. Even said he'd accept free travel for both populations across the border. The tricky part, of course, would be setting the border, as the truth is that many states (including CA) are both deep red and deep blue in varying regions. OK, second mistake on my part. Inuvik is in the Northwest Territories, which is basically the Western Arctic. It used to be abbreviated NWT, but it is now NT. Nunavut is the eastern Arctic, excluding northern Quebec and Labrador.
Yukon is basically a wedge jammed in between NT, British Columbia, and Alaska. It has a short stretch of Arctic ocean coastline. Map here: http://mapsof.net/map/canada-provinces-and-territories-map Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 22, 2015 12:03 AM (HCEgT) 395

Mike H., if you mean the UK's decline since WWII, yep.
Re the peninsula, recall that Yemen's borders with the Kingdom haven't always been so, um, firm and clear, and the Saudis historically viewed Yemen as one that got away (along with the UAE, formerly the Trucial States, the "truce" involving British guarantees of sovereignty so that they weren't swallowed up in the Kingdom). And the tribal connections of course have always been extensive. Interesting times in the region. Not sure the US will *ever* really be able to restore its credibility. Not just the jaw-dropping disastrous idiocy of the Iraq pull-out, the Cairo speech, the Syrian debacle, etc. There is no longer a serious electorate in the US. And a large segment of what hitherto made up the solid coalition for neccessary action overseas is now firmly rooted in cartoon fantasy land, where punitive strikes and other unserious actions are imagined adequate for shaping outcomes and protecting interests. AOP, always sad to see a classic local restaurant go away.
According to a reliable source -- my Mom -- the very first restaurant I ever ate in, at the age of about a month, was a Mexican restaurant called El Patio, on Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach. My Mom loved the place. Years later (by the 1990s), I finally figured out why. It was a nice place... but by far, the blandest Mexican food I ever tasted. And it was getting its business taken away more and more by newer Mexican places, and even fast food joints, that were serving ever-newer, more exciting, "authentic," spicier fare. It was downright sad when El Patio finally went away around 2006. Their own customer base actually and simply became too sophisticated for it. About the Saudi army, I know little about their ground troops. I remember during the first Gulf War, that Arab troops were allowed first into Kuwait, even though American troops had done all the heavy lifting. Again, and I'm only talking from what I've heard, young Saudi men get a stipend from the government due to oil money, many don't have to work all that hard to have a living. You may wind up with a force that all have an entitlement mentality that when shit gets real, they turn tail and run. I don't know. They are going up against a force that is already battle tested and is willing to die for the cause. Sending the Saudi troops against Iranian backed troops may be a disaster for the Kingdom. Iranian troops are well trained and well tested. Just my two cents. Posted by: Old Blue at April 22, 2015 12:33 AM (9iR5/) 468

Years later (by the 1990s), I finally figured out
why. Posted by: qdpsteve at April 22, 2015 12:32 AM (elbY7) And you know, the bland, non-spicy, stuff was probably more "authentic" in that it better represented what the average Mexican eats at home everyday. 7 seas has changed over time: The term "Seven Seas" appears as early as 2300 BC in Hymn 8 of the Sumerian Enheduanna to the goddess Inanna. The Mesopotamians were the first in the history of astronomy to keep records of the observed 7 moving objects in the heavens - the 7 Classical Planets/Seven Heavens - and they made this connection to their 7 Seas
The Medieval concept of the Seven Seas has its origins in Greece and Rome. In Medieval European literature, the Seven Seas referred to the following seas: the Adriatic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, including its marginal seas, notably the Aegean Sea. the Black Sea , the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf , the Arabian Sea (which is part of the Indian Ocean), the Red Sea, including the closed Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee Posted by: Naes at April 22, 2015 12:35 AM (YhayY) 473

The Atlantic and Indian Oceans were oceans, not seas. My guess is that the difference is whether you could go completely around their boundaries.
Posted by: cthulhu at April 22, 2015 12:30 AM Probably correct on that. Though my, admittedly hazy memory, is that they (generally speaking) didn't view them as different things, sort of... just bigger seas. I seem to recall the Indian counted, as it was part of relatively regular trade routes and whatnot. But, that might have been added later, as well and wasn't part of the more ancient group, which was pretty much restricted to the med and it's immediate surrounds? Greek literature (which is where the phrase entered Western literature), the Seven Seas were the Aegean, Adriatic, Mediterranean, Black, Red, and Caspian seas, with the Persian Gulf thrown in as a "sea." In Medieval European literature, the phrase referred to the North Sea, Baltic, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Black, Red, and Arabian seas. For the ancients, and right through the Middle Ages, the Indian and Atlantic oceans could have been regarded as "seas" because you could have trade routes on them that rarely, if ever, passed out sight of land.

The Saudis get the bomb, then Jordan and the Egyptians will have to arm up as well. These are the least stable people in the world to have nuclear weapons. No way....Edmonton is like the North Pole of professional sports.
It must be sitting on some godforsaken pole of some type, because it's the one city I've been to where my mental compass doesn't work. I have a very good sense of direction and location. I can go to strange cities and drive around and always have a good idea of where I am compared to where I've been. A couple of years back we were in Florida and I said to my wife "Say....y'know, my grandparents used to live around here" - and I drove right to their house, where I hadn't been in decades, and never as an adult. For some reason I lose all spatial awareness in Edmonton. I can't drive 3 blocks and not get lost, and it's WEIRD because the city is laid out simply, just look at it in a map. ....actually, there was an anecdote about someone who went through Basic Training with a name like Brian Darling. People kept cracking up during roll call.
Of course, along with everything else concerning names, it could be worse. Legend has it that a man traveled halfway across the country before alighting in a small midwestern town. Walking out of the train station he spied a shop window across the street which said in huge letters: "General Store", and in smaller letters, "A. Swindler, Proprietor". He walked in and said, "your sign gave me a bit of a start -- I'm surprised you didn't use your full name." Mr. Swindler replied, "that would have been worse -- it's Adam." I dunno, the Bow in Calgary is stranger, it goes from the SE north and then turns left to the west in the northernmost part of the city. It's like a mirror image Greek letter Gamma. Funny story. Adam Swindler... There used to be an optometrist in the shopping center just down the road from me. The shingle he had hanging out front read "Dr. Doctor, Optometrist." On a dare I told a buddy to open th door a sing the Robert Palmer song as loud as he could (I learned the hard way long before that day). As soon as he opened the lobby door, the receptionist looked up at him and said "son, if you sing that GD song, I'm going to come out there and shove that skateboard up your ass!" Heh - probably happened fifty times a week to the poor gal for decades. Posted by: chi's sandwIch at April 22, 2015 01:35 AM (TIDvY) 557
I dunno, the Bow in Calgary is stranger, it goes
from the SE north and then turns left to the west in the northernmost part of the city. It's like a mirror image Greek letter Gamma. The Saskatchewan, while bendier ( technical river term) pretty much just goes SW to NE thru Edmonton. Beats me, but my wife never tires of teasing me about it, it amuses her. Posted by: Weirddave at April 22, 2015 01:31 AM (7TK5d) Difference is, the N. Saskatchewan river is at the bottom of a steep gulch in Edmonton, so it very much presents an obstacle to roads. Very little of the city is down on the river flood plain. The Bow, on the other hand, is in a gentle valley, and much of the city, and all the downtown core, is on the flood plain. And it seems, in Edmonton, wherever you are, you can't get on a bridge without a couple of sharp turns. In Calgary, the roads just cross the river on a bridge, no drama. I think it is because the river has a big old shit-hook in it, right in the middle of the city, so districts that are "north" of the river with respect to some districts are "west" of the river with respect to others. I know my way around that town fairly well, now. Well enough to know what alternate routes to take if the regular route is snarled with traffic. I dunno, the Bow in Calgary is stranger, it goes from the SE north and then turns left to the west in the northernmost part of the city. It's like a mirror image Greek letter Gamma. Posted by: Weirddave at April 22, 2015 01:31 AM (7TK5d) I had a bizarre reaction to Taipei. I went down to the concierge to get a tear-off-sheet map of the city, oriented off of it, marched off and got horribly lost....but managed to retrace things enough to get back to the hotel. Next day, went down, had breakfast, realized I'd left the map in the room, and got another from the concierge. Walked outside and started to orient.....and realized I had problems. Went back to the room and brought both maps to the concierge desk. "Oh, they gave you last year's map yesterday -- they've since moved the river." Has swearing become more frequent in recent years?
This is a very common question, and it’s a tough one to answer because we have no comprehensive, reliable baseline frequency data prior to the 1970s for comparison purposes. It is true that we are exposed to more forms of swearing since the inception of satellite radio, cable television, and the Internet, but that does not mean the average person is swearing more frequently. In our recent frequency count, a greater proportion of our data comes from women (the reduction of a once large gender difference). We interpret this finding as reflecting a greater proportion of women in public (e.g., many more women on college campuses) rather than a coarsening of women. Our forthcoming research also indicates that the most frequently recorded taboo words have remained fairly stable over the past 30 years. The Anglo-Saxon words we say are hundreds of years old, and most of the historically offensive sexual references are still at the top of the offensiveness list; they have not been dislodged by modern slang. Frequency data must be periodically collected to answer questions about trends in swearing over time. Thus, our data do not indicate that our culture is getting “worse” with respect to swearing. When this question arises, we also frequently fail to acknowledge the impact of recently-enacted laws that penalize offensive language, such as sexual harassment and discrimination laws. Workplace surveillance of telephone and email conversations also curbs our use of taboo language. Posted by: Ira Weatheral, SJW Extraordinaire at April 22, 2015 03:31 AM (qry2M) 648

Hillary is getting support from people who will elect her president! Obama got 93% of black vote 73% hispanic 77% asian and native american vote along with 39% of white vote Except for blacks they love white woman more then black man and blacks hate republicans. In 2014 only 36% of voters voted. Over 66% of the non voters vote democrat and they come out for presidential elections. Also 5,000,000 more minority kids will have turned 18 by nov 2016 and democratic party has already got halve of them registered to vote and no they are not illegal aliens but american citizens!
