Playwright Tom Stoppard: "A Frightening Time" For Free Speech

The cerebral British playwright, widely suspected of classical-liberal (that is, conservative) sympathies, will discuss the "many fronts" upon which free speech is attacked when receiving an award from the literary society PEN.

"People like me are chosen, in a sense, to represent what PEN and other organizations are doing 24/7. So I can say I'm proud to represent them," the playwright said.

Charlie Hebdo, the Parisian satirical magazine that was a target of a deadly shooting in January, also will be honored. Staff member Jean-Baptiste Thoret, who barely escaped the attack that killed eight of his co-workers and four others, will receive the PEN/Toni and James C. Goodale Freedom of Expression Courage Award.

Stoppard, who has campaigned for oppressed artists and political dissidents in Eastern and Central Europe, said threats to free speech are worse now than ever, from radical Islam to U.S. government surveillance.

...

In addition to the Paris attack, PEN Executive Director Suzanne Nossel pointed to other moves against writers, including a gunman who opened fire on a Copenhagen cultural center in March and a South African novelist confined for comments she made in appreciation of Salman Rushdie.

"It is a climate of hair-trigger sensitivity to certain kinds of speech and a very dangerous moment for writers who are seated in the crosshairs," said Nossel. "It is a tough moment on many fronts."

I hope they discuss threats beyond Islamists -- because the militant religious zealots of the left are as much of a threat to free thought as the Islamists. The Islamists will murder you, but the leftists will get you fired and, if they get their way, forbidden from speaking at all.

Feminist reformer Christina Hoff Sommers recently spoke at Georgedown -- which, you may be surprised, or not, to learn, was "traumatic" and "triggering" for many people, who objected to her speech on the grounds that it made them feel "unsafe" that someone in the world disagreed with them.

If you don't know how the game is played, the new magic word is "unsafe," because if you claim someone is making you feel "unsafe," that sets in motion Title IX protections. That is, if you want to censor someone, just claim not that you disagree with them or find them disgusting, but that they make you feel "unsafe;" then administrators are under legal peril if they do not act swiftly to restore your sense of chill.

The lefties have been playing games with this, of course, claiming dishonestly to feel "unsafe" when in fact all they feel is intellectually challenged (a situation they will encounter frequently in their lives, so they might as well get used to feeling like dummies), but now they're sort of dropping the mask and just straight-up admitting that when they say they "feel unsafe" all they really feel is that someone has disagreed with them, and they don't like it.

Feminist activists at Georgetown University are special snowflakes who felt they needed trigger warnings before another feminist who disagrees with them gave a lecture on campus.

The speaker, resident American Enterprise Institute scholar Christina Hoff Sommers, delivered the lecture on Thursday night at the famed Jesuit university in Washington, D.C.'s best neighborhood.

The lecture entitled "What’s Right (and Badly Wrong) with Feminism?" was sponsored by the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, a conservative women’s group.

A group of radical Georgetown feminists demanded "trigger warnings" at the event because, they feared, Sommers could traumatize rape victims by talking.

"Tonight, Republicans are hosting an extremist anti-feminist speaker that dismisses and denies survivors of sexual assault and the real harm of rape culture," a Georgetown student identified only as “Sarah” emailed.

"Current College Republicans leadership has not been willing to do simple things like add a trigger/ content warning, or clarify why they felt it was appropriate to bring this speaker into our community," Sarah complained.

...

Perhaps a dozen of the lecture attendees turned out to be protesters. They held up signs as Sommers spoke. Messages on the signs included "Feminists Against RAPE Apology!" and "Trigger Warning: anti-feminism." At the bottom of the "trigger warning”"sign was a scrawled message about "safe space."

They give the game away by being so blatant (and dumb) in dropping the fake pretext that this is about "protecting rape victims."

With the "Trigger Warning: Anti-Feminist," they straight up admit: This is just about protecting women from disagreement.

As a (female) writer recently said, women getting upset that other people don't agree with them isn't feminist. It's merely female.

If you want to feel triggered yourself, you can wade into these FaceBook comments about the speech.

One commenter there noted what I have frequently said: This isn't politics, this is simply personality disorder. Specifically, the Histrionic Personality Disorder, which affects 2-3% of the population (and 4 times as many women as men).

HPD is part of the "dramatic" cluster of personality disorders -- and the word "dramatic" there is well-chosen. Histrionics see discord and attacks everywhere, and seek attention by shrieking about imagined schemes against them.

How bad is it?

This bad.

A photo on Twitter shows a student holding another sign reading, “TRIGGER WARNING: anti-feminism” and advertising the location of a "safe space" for anyone who might feel traumatized by Sommers’s opposing views.

Why these students would go through all of this rather than just not attend is unclear--

It's because they are hysterics, and rather than being treated, they are being indulged.

-- but it seems like Sommers's experience with Oberlin students will be the same. In fact, the Oberlin students who wrote a piece for the school newspaper protesting the invitation preceded it with a trigger warning--— apparently, they consider Sommers to be so dangerous that even talking about her talking could traumatize someone.

"Her talk is happening, so let's pull together in the face of this violence and make our own space to support each other," the students wrote in the piece, which was titled "In Response to Sommers' Talk: A Love Letter to Ourselves" and had been signed by more than 150 students and campus groups as of noon on Friday. "It is valid and necessary to both create alternative spaces for healing and to directly challenge the violence that is happening," it continued.

Note, again, that "violence" here means "a 130-pound academic giving a speech at a venue I am not required to attend."

Oh, and if you don't feel like you've been adequately bullied by hysterics today, you can read K-Timpfs other recent piece. Zie's at zer best here.

I'll just post this because it's awesome, and may annoy the Special Snowflakes.

That's the beauty of it.

This is the world the left demands. They see literally nothing wrong with this because the targeted homes were full of people who believed the wrong thing.

Kinda makes you wonder about all that outcry coming from the Left about 'collateral damage' when we bomb a building full of terrorists.

Those people didn't deserve to be attacked because the Left thinks they believe the right things. Conservative homes DO deserve to be attacked because they believe the wrong things.

It's not about whether or not you've actually done anything wrong anymore. Now it's about whether or not you tow the party line.

If you don't, the State will visit you. Resist, and the State will kill your entire family.

What other nations do we know of in which this is standard practice?

A "rape apologist" is any not actively participation in SJW lynch mobs, stoning innocent scapegoats to death. Even a hesitation in tying the noose for the next victim is enough evidence to "out" you as an apologist -- and so the next noose will be for you.

During her tenure as Senator Smathers' secretary, Mary Jo Kopechne shared an apartment flat with Nancy Carole Tyler, secretary to Bobby Baker, an aide to Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. An emerging scandal involving Baker's corrupt activities prompted President John F. Kennedy to privately offer Senator Smathers the second spot on the 1964 presidential ticket with plans to drop Johnson as his running mate. The roommates, Kopechne and Tyler, allegedly leaked the President's plans to the press.

Some researchers have claimed a link between the Bobby Baker scandal and the 1963 JFK assassination. Tyler died mysteriously in a plane crash in May 1965. Kopechne went on to become secretary to Senator Robert F. Kennedy, until he was assassinated in June 1968 during his run for Presidency.

152 A speaker makes one feel "unsafe" for speaking "violent" words.

Sometimes that's a real thing. There's been a lot of
Holocaust stuff in the news lately, and I have no trouble believing Jews
would have felt unsafe listening to some of the speeches broadcast on
the radio in the early 1930s...and I think most of us would agree "fear
for their safety" would be a legit response and most of us would want to
help those who wanted to act on their fears (unlike the FDR admin,
ho-hum).

I think these bints are trying to play on that for
support, which is ridiculous because no one is actually threatening them
with physical harm or promising to take away their right to support
themselves...just disagreeing with their stupid ideas. And that makes me hate them.

I remember asking, "what if a guy has 3 drinks and the girl was sober? Is that rape?" and the sexual assault guy laughed and said, "no. Even if you had 10 drinks, she had 3, and she initiated it, you're still raping her. That's the law." (subtext: you're fucked)

They both came home (different times) and told me about a lesson they had been taught and that if I spanked or grabed them they could call the cops on me. My reaction was "Hope you like your new family". They were both past the age where a spanking was used as a punishment so it was stupid to begin with but that is what they were taught so they had to tell me. I know other people that for whatever reason let their kids rule over them with that threat and were afraid to discipline them in any way. We are now seeing what giving kids that kind of power over weak parents produces.

Now we celebrate victimhood. The hysterics aren't taught, hey, you are the weird one who can't handle Life, you need to get your shit together. No, they are the victim of an oppressive world creating all this stress for them.

Also, now everybody has to go to college for some stupid reason.

End result, all these hysterics existed decades ago but they were at home tormenting their families mostly. Now they're at college tormenting the rest of the world.

More law on top of already ignored law is not a solution. I honestly don't know the answer other than to prepare for ugliness the best way you know how. That will mean different things to different people, but trusting "authorities" to do the right thing is not the optimal one.

269 This goes far beyond rape apology and into the realm of granting outsiders magical powers to make them come emotionally unglued with mere words and challenging views.

Actually....this is very in line with the way Islam treats responsibility for bad behavior (men in particular). They define the world as one big temptation to "sin" and therefore want to modify *the community* to stifle these temptations - outlawing drink, dance, music, the exposed skin of a woman, etc. - as opposed to expecting *the individual* to take responsibility for not giving in to the temptation.

The Left wants to modify *the community* to prevent thoughtcrime/badviews instead of expecting *the individual* to take responsibility for being able to process and discern a variety of facts and opinions.

280 ALL COLLEGES SHOULD BE INTELLECTUALLY UNSAFE SPACES.

In a mature environment, humans often opt -- often without much fore- or afterthought -- to simply shake off acts of political correctness or incorrectness.

But while today's college campus is many things, mature it is not. This in itself is a special sort of problem, especially from the standpoint of those who believe that infantilization has set in and America's teens and twentysomethings are being emotionally disabled by the institutions that surround them.

On the other hand, a strong case can be made that the opposite problem holds sway: Students in educational institutions are there because they're in fact not ready for the prime time of adult society. Treating them otherwise is to invite disaster, in the form of a string of psychodramas resolvable only by recourse to unending arbitration.

...

Let's make a point here to say that most STEM studies are just the opposite.
They are geared to go into the largest corporations in the world, where a "career of failure" is not an option.

Practically every engineering school has a professor who is the "designated SOB" .. the guy who makes the students lives as miserable as possible. The professor only relents to give those with a "D" the option of having it converted to an "F" so they can take the course over again.

The reason ... there is no room for 'victims' of "Modern Depression" for those building bridges, security systems and other critical infrastructure.

After all, when was the last time the government formed a Blue Ribbon Committee to investigate the failure of a Gender Studies program ?

The secret to universities is they are all motivated by two things: money and lawsuits. Threaten to take away the former, or threaten to file the latter, and they pay attention. Otherwise the admins just sit in their little bubbles and let the edumacators run roughshod over everything.

So what I am saying, is the easiest way for conservatives to try and fix academia is to do either the former or the latter. The time university admins could be reasoned with like sane adults has long since passed. Reputation, academia, honor...never heard of them.

293 The Left wants to modify *the community* to prevent thoughtcrime/badviews instead of expecting *the individual* to take responsibility for being able to process and discern a variety of facts and opinions.

Thus does the Progress of Critical Theory advance.

Criticize and keep on criticizing each and every facet of the society you're trying to destroy. Ignore the good, emphasize the bad, even if it's less than 1%.

Take a masculine society that has managed to protect itself and most of the world for over a century and turn each and every man into a sex-raged animal in the public's perception. Never mind that it's not true.

318 ... 'victims' of "Modern Depression" ...

You may ask ... what is "Modern Depression" ?

The Japanese cable TV network NHKW ran a piece on "Modern Depression" about 18 months ago.

The major symptoms:
1) affects those in their 20's (regular depression affects mostly those in 50's)
2) they can't work, but they can go out drinking with their friends
3) they think their bosses are too demanding

After much discussion, it was determined that the major event that brings on "Modern Depression" was that these 20-somethings couldn't handle criticism from their bosses (i.e. they're "snowflakes").

Yep, there's a distinction between lecturing a rape victim about how they behaved/insinuating they brought it on themselves vs. giving general advice about dressing and behaving so as not to send mixed messages and/or put yourself in a situation that leaves you more vulnerable to attack.

The feminists have chosen to ignore that distinction and brand any common sense advise as "rape apology".

The minority of Leftists are the drones, the true devotees. They are the religious ideologues who buy into the Leftist bullshit from top to bottom. You can call these people the moonbats.

People who leave post-it notes such as these are drones. They desperately desire a utopia, nay, a cocoon of safety in which to live in. Drones look to the Whips to make the cocoon a reality.

zombie! I fd a wealth of info on youtube, taped conferences by the National Archives. One thing they discusses was that awful phony documentary about the Rosenbergs and I learned something new:

That physicist, Phil Morrison, lied. The info Greenglass gave to the Kgb was valuable. Morrison also believed the Rosenbergs were guilty. Also, Greenglass gave the kgb a lot more than a sketch to the kgb. He also turned over a fuse.

It was nice to see people who have been smeared by the Meerpoles and their ilk defended for once.

http://goo.gl/zgeFPR
Posted by: Bruce J.

The flip-floppy guilt/innocence the Left declares about the Rosenberg was actually the very first inkling in my life that something was wrong with my self-indentified political views (i.e. lefty when I was younger).

In my family/social circle were lots of old-time leftists from the '50s, some of whom were part of the protest movement in that era, and one evening I will never forget the reminisces they had about the Rpsenberg protests (the focus of which at that time was that it was cruel to leave their sons parentless by executing bot parents).

At the conversation progressed, everyone casually and unthinkingly veered between their private true-beliefs and their public sham-beliefs.

So they alternately praised the Rosenbergs for hurting America and for giving the Soviets the bomb -- and then in the next breath acted outraged that the US were convict and execute innocent activists. Back and forth, back and forth -- they weren't even aware they were doing it.

I had an epiphany that these people were insane, and that my beliefs were based on and heavily influenced by their beliefs - -which began the process of reassessment, leading me to where I am today.

394 Second look at Sigmund Freud, who worked with hysterical (in the classic meaning of the word) women?

I had a nurse I dated, ages ago, who was in abject denial that women are the crazy -- at times -- 'cause hormones. I would have conceded that the male hormone testosterone can make men just as crazy, and probably infinitely more dangerous. But she was in such utter denial I couldn't continue. No compromise means no deity calling, earth-moving, legs wrapped around the back sex.

The battle of the sexes can continue without my input. I found a women who was honest with herself and me.

Which is the goal. The mom quoted in the story says her 7 year old came to her after reading the book (I guess they read it to the whole school or something) and wondered if he was transgendered, something he had, of course, never mentioned before.

414 Madison -- The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Friday it would not hear arguments -- in secret or in public -- as it considers whether to allow an investigation to continue that has looked into whether Gov. Scott Walker's campaign illegally worked with conservative groups in recall elections.

"The prospect of oral argument creates severe tension between important and conflicting priorities," the court wrote, citing the long tradition of open courts and the secrecy of the John Doe.

Instead, the court will decide the matter based on hundreds of pages of briefs that have been filed in the cases, mostly in secret, because the court also rejected a special prosecutor's argument that the secrecy genie has already largely escaped the bottle.

Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, who faces a challenger to her re-election April 7, did not participate in any of the orders. She recused herself from all the John Doe cases months ago, citing the fact her son is a law partner to a lawyer representing a subject of the John Doe investigation.

Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson dissented from all three orders.

"The court's order is long on summarizing the parties' positions regarding oral argument but short on setting forth the court's own reasoning for canceling oral argument," she wrote.

"The court's failure to provide further justification for its highly unusual decision to cancel oral argument is, in my view, alarming."

On a sports blog I frequent, there was a thread about Jameis Winston's accuser now suing him in civil court despite having lost six different legal challenges. I pointed out the facts that part of the reason the female "victim" had lost was because her story changed several times and she stopped cooperating with FSU during it's investigation on her behalf of the charges levied against Winston. It was determined that the evidence was too contradictory and therefore guilt on Winston's part could not be determined.

There were more than one other poster on that board that called me everything from a rape apologist to a "survivor'(not allowed to say victim) shamer and blamer. That I was blaming the victim.

Just putting the facts of a case out there, if they don't include declaring a man guilty of rape despite little to no evidence, constitutes one being considered a supporter of rape.

I believe this is part of the "it's always someone else's fault" mentality that a couple of generations have grown up with. And from that has sprung this crazy, trigger warning, no one can have any kind of sad or angry emotion, etc.

Hey, if there really is no difference between women and men, or gender is fluid and I am what I say I am, then why do they have separate awards for women runners? Seems kinda binary and discriminatory that they separate the sexes at all in sports.
