Corker's "Deal" On Iran Oversight Is a Con Job on Conservatives; Scheme Intends to Authorize Obama to Drop Sanctions, While Giving Craven Political Whores The Phony Excuse That They Voted Against Doing So

Wow.

I've had this Andrew McCarthy piece open since last week, but I just only now read it.

Do you remember how Mitch McConnell schemed to increase the debt limit, while suckering conservatives with a claim that conservatives voted against it?

The scheme worked like this: Congress authorized the president to increase the debt limit on his authority. (Actually, we're already at the stage of falsehood, because he wouldn't be raising the debt limit on his own authority, but with the authority Congress had just voted him.)

Now, the deal also granted, supposedly, Congress the power to block the raising of the debt limit, by voting a "resolution of disapproval."

But here's the thing: The president can veto that.

Which is what he did, of course.

So the debt limit was raised in this way:

1. Republicans voted to give Obama the power to raise the debt limit. They didn't take responsibility for this themselves; they just said Obama could do so, if he wanted.

2. But Republicans retain the right to "block" it, supposedly, with a vote of disapproval.

3. But which Obama can veto -- which every Republican knows he will do.

4. McConnell, Corker, and all the other other con artists now get to claim they didn't raise the debt limit. Heck, they even voted a Resolution of Disapproval against it.

What they don't tell you is that this had been designed from the start to pass the debt limit increase, with a fake Resolution of Disapproval voted on and vetoed, which had been planned from the start, so that they could lie and say they "voted against" the increase in the debt limit.

Well, Corker's alleged "compromise" with the Democrats and Obama on the Iran "deal" plays exactly the same game with foreign policy.

Obama will submit his "deal" to Congress -- including the ending of all sanctions -- and that deal will become law in 60 days unless Congress votes a "resolution of disapproval" against the deal.

But Congress -- Corker, McConnell, and the other con artists and liars -- cannot vote such a resolution, because 1, just 40 Democratic Senators could filibuster it, and, failing that, 2, Obama could veto it.

Thus, this "compromise" is once again constructed so that the GOP can give Obama the power he desires while they pretend to vote against it.

Notice this pattern: They continue giving Obama every fucking thing he wants, and then they go home to their districts and states and say "we did everything we could to stop him, but by jiminy, we just couldn't manage it."

Failure Theater -- Act II.

It Gets Worse:

I heard Levin rip this apart for over a week. It is the Senate having SCOAMF over a barrel with him need ing 67 votes to approve anything to the Senate preemptively giving him something that the Senate would then need 67 votes itself to override.

I think it's political. The GOP has to know that this Iran deal is a POS. So the GOP seems happy to let it go forward, provided they have cover, so a rival political party can be blamed.

That real people are going to die doesn't seem to enter into the GOP's political calculations.

Israel besieged by enemies who want to, and are capable of destroying it? Yep. Gog/Magog (Russia) issuing not-at-all-subtle warnings to Israel to not retaliate on Russia's supplying Iran with missiles by supplying Ukraine with the same...

A supposed opposition-controlled Congress bowing to an out-of-control executive, enabling him to give leeway to a nation bent on the annihilation of Israel and the West...

Yep, yep, yep, lookin' mighty End Times out there.

That's fine with me; if that sequence of events does come to pass, well... I know how it all ends, and that's good.

Because, guess what- if the SCOAMT submits his "deal" to Congress today, and Congress does nothing, then nothing happens and the "deal" is dead. This is because the authority to ratify treaties resides with the Senate and the Senate alone. If it chooses not to ratify, then the "deal" is not ratified. Period.

Pitiful, just pitiful.

And there are certain people here who claim we must continue to vote these sorts in because "electability", "SCOTUS Noms", "(insert leading Democrat's name here) will be worse", "Because Republicans will never win another race again" or (my personal favorite) "the Xtian right won't vote for the Mormon (or the Cubans, or the Blacks, or the Women etc. etc.) so we have to"

Didn't vote them in this time, and just from their first 4 months, I'm not voting for them in the next election.

They would have to have a "come to Jesus" moment and march on the WH and personally arrest that traitor and then impeach him and convict him before I'd even think of voting for another Republican (except President if it's Walker or Cruz).

50 years of paying fairly close attention to the GOP and I now KNOW that they do not want to be in the majority and if they happen to get to be the majority then they will defer to the REAL majority; the Democrats/Liberals/Thieves and nothing changes. Maybe, maybe the destruction proceeds slightly more slowly. But that's because these guys can't make up their minds on how much to steal. The Democrats don't have that problem because they're going to try for EVERYTHING.

First they would annihilate the Carrier Task forces, so as to slow forward deployment of assets. Nukes are a good choice for this, especially in the narrow confines of the gulf. And getting close enough is fairly easy.

While the US is bringing assets from other theaters into the Indian Ocean, Med and Gulf, they would then proceed to either hold Israel hostage or reduce it to glass.

That's my point, I don't think they need an order from the CoC.

I think their standard orders are "go out to sea, wander around, and if any nukes get launched at us, launch back" and they have a bunch of pre selected targets in a bunch of countries.

I don't know that for a fact, but that would be my guess.

Because the whole system was designed around the idea of a Soviet / US nuclear slugging match, I can't imagine the subs were supposed to surface and wait for orders from DC before retaliating. In a real nuclear war, those orders from DC may never come.

285 Actually, they would be wasting their options by targetting Israel or the US.

23 Why sell us out on Iran, as well? Where's the benefit?
I think it's political. The GOP has to know that this Iran deal is a POS. They seem to be taking the tack that Obama's name will be attached to it, and when it turns out to be a disaster that he and he alone will be blamed. So the GOP seems happy to let it go forward, provided they have cover, so a rival political party can be blamed.

That real people are going to die doesn't seem to enter into the GOP's political calculations.

316 I will add my two zinc pennies. I don't think deficits are certain failure. But, if you continue to borrow at a steady or increasing rate, it has an end point. A number of countries have found this out. When you start borrowing to pay the interest is a sure sign of a failed system.

I never thought I'd say this, but the Mooer is right...because the feral government has adopted accounting methods that are expressly illegal in the private sector.

In the specific case of 1998-2000, the current-operations surpluses in the various "trust funds", and the "interest earned" by said "trust funds" were counted as positive revenue for the purposes of the deficit/"surplus", even as they were converted to Treasury securities and spent, driving up the total debt.

327 Because the whole system was designed around the idea of a Soviet / US nuclear slugging match, I can't imagine the subs were supposed to surface and wait for orders from DC before retaliating. In a real nuclear war, those orders from DC may never come.

IIRC, the subs actually had a towed antenna for ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) radio--in the event, a signal would be sent by this means that would effectively act as the "trigger" for the missile boats to do their thing.

"accrued interest" is an accounting term relevant only to whoever owns the debt.

GOVERNMENT (the ones issuing the debt) pay interest on the 'current expenses' side of the ledger.

Just like your credit card bills -- they're current liabilities, not "accrued interest" (which refers to the interest accrued since the bond was issued, and has nothing to do with this conversation at all)

370 And some suspect there are fewer Boomers in operation than claimed.

And definitely fewer since the USSR collapsed.

Numbers don't mean a lot as there are quite a few hunter killers included in the total of submersibles.

And, to top off my point, there are many that are deployed too far away to do anything immediate.

As was mentioned although a nuke might not take out a Carrier, it will severely hamper it's operation, destroy quite a few of it's support and defensive vessels and since a sub (usually a hunter killer ) is attached, it too could suffer damage.

It would just be a delaying tactic and it wouldn't require them to deliver the nuke by missile. (neither would doing Tel Aviv)

Look at the maps. Israeli population is massed in the little neck of land in the north. Then there are vast empty spaces between Israel and anywhere else. So, Israel can get nuked quick and retaliatory nukes may get a few cities but the majority survives.

The second part of his premise is straight up fucktarded, but I wondered about the first part when Jeb Bush couldn't give an immediate answer whether he supported regime change in Iran. It makes me think there are some senators who are going to make some money here.

414 USS Independence was found off the California coast.

The Able and Baker tests at Bikini. Able was an air burst and truthfully most of the ships shrugged it off. Baker was an underwater detonation which sunk many ships.

USS Independence and the German cruiser Prinz Eugen seemed to survive Baker. Prinz Eugen's reputation as a lucky ship seemed intact, was being towed and made it to Kawajalein before capsizing.

415 Iran won't attack the USN until after they have nuked Manhattan and D.C. There is no strategic advantage to attacking the Navy.

They'll take out the Manhattan financial district in an attempt to collapse the US economy. That was what the World Trade Center was all about. D.C. to paralyze the decision making process and perhaps collapse the US Federal government.

Otherwise, Iran will use conventional weapons and proxy militia to get what they want in the middle east. Saudi Arabia is move of a target than the USN.

Oh they could still be intact, more or less. And if they buttoned up quick enough, the crew would be somewhat okay also.

Except for any on deck at the time.

Radios? = gone
Planes stored or launching on flight deck? = gone or heavily damaged.
Superstructure? = not as well protected and a surface blast would do a lot of damage.

That's not counting the possible compression from the impact wave.

Note the Independence WAS sunk.

depends on how big the blast and how close they got.

Supremes wouldn't take the case. They'd argue that it's between the executive and legislative branches, and that the legislative branch has plenty of recourse if they really feel the executive is stealing power.

Of course, the legislative is giving up power on it's own in order to avoid "tough decisions" and the Supremes are not going to get in the middle of it.

yeah ya kinda are. Anyone who talks about Israel being able sustain a Nuclear hit and survive hasn't been to Israel I am betting. They have ONE huge population center- Tel Aviv and it's surrounding suburbs. Haifa and Jerusalem and it's suburbs to a lesser extend.

Israel is NOT built for a Nuclear Exchange.

Ahmadinejad (guessing on the spelling) even had the streets widened when he was mayor to accommodate the return of the Mahdi.

The Sunni think that's silly and that the 12th imam doesn't exist yet, and we're still on the like 7th imam right now.

No, but people who are familiar with economics understand what GDP does and does not measure.

They also understand that government accounting is bullshit and that the government refuses to use GAAP because if they used GAAP everyone would freak out at those numbers.

So you can take the governments raw numbers (they're published) and come up with very different outcomes if you use GAAP or GNP instead of government accounting and GDP.

And you get very different numbers.

Luckily for DC, most of the country is as ignorant on the subject of economics as you are.

532 The Able and Baker tests at Bikini. Able was an air
burst and truthfully most of the ships shrugged it off. Baker was an
underwater detonation which sunk many ships.

USS Independence and
the German cruiser Prinz Eugen seemed to survive Baker. Prinz Eugen's
reputation as a lucky ship seemed intact, was being towed and made it to
Kawajalein before capsizing.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at April 20, 2015 03:13 PM (oEMN+)

If you watched the video, it's readily apparent why the underwater burst sank the ships. The blast simply turned a patch of ocean into fizzy foam, like soap suds. Foam much less dense than water, so it could not provide the buoyancy needed to keep the vessels afloat. So they basically fell like rocks into the foam, and when the foam dissipated, there were in the position of being in a hole in the water, with ocean pouring in on top of them.
