Quote of the Day I

When I asked one top staffer on Hillary Clinton's campaign to pick the high point of her overwhelmingly understated 2016 campaign kickoff in Iowa, the person paused for a moment, then shot back - "The Aaron Hernandez verdict!"

Quote of the Day II

Quote of the Day III

I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANOTHER GODDAMN THING ABOUT MY CARBON FOOTPRINT: Leonardo DiCaprio the 'eco warrior' flew on a private jet from NY to LA SIX times in SIX weeks, Sony hack documents reveal. I'll believe it's a crisis when the people who keep telling me it's a crisis start acting like it's a crisis.

-- Instapundit

Quote of the Day IV

Sex is a fundamental human experience, not simply a white, straight person one

-- Headline from a Guardian article

Apparently the Guardian's author is completely unaware of the existence of certain entire genres of pr0n.

Quote of the Day V - Send in the Clowns Edition

Clowns brawled with animal rights protesters under a circus big top in San Bernardino Friday night, witnesses say.

And I'd pay some good money just to see this part alone.

Why Hillary Can't Be in the Moment

A pretty good armchair psychoanalysis of Hillary Rodham Clinton that goes a long way to explaining how she came to be the way she is. But don't forget that the nasty unprincipled part of her was already present from her earliest days which is why she was fired from the Watergate committee for lies and unethical behavior.

Many years ago Hillary accepted the job of being Bills' after-party cleanup crew. In the service of their upward march, she had no choice. Many people think Hillary Clinton is a psychopath without a conscience who cares nothing about her husband's betrayals on a personal level. That formulation does not seem supported by what has leaked out about the Clinton's relationship. It is more likely that she is a wellspring of anger hiding behind a smile you can hang laundry on.

What is certain is she spent years mopping up and deodorizing Bill's messes. Bill's affairs with and attacks on women have been more destructive to Hillary's psychological integrity and self-worth than some miraculous hundred grand showing up in the Clinton cookie jar have been to him. His sexist violence strikes at the heart of who she claims to be, and continues to damage her basic sense of security and candidacy. For forty years, a room full of strangers is where the party starts for Bill, and where the messes are made for Hillary. For forty years every time Hillary entered a room full of strangers she had her bucket and mop. A bimbo splatter might be found anywhere. For forty years a room full of strangers, interacting in an unscripted moment, has been Hillary's worst nightmare.

Last Two Doolittle Raiders Honored on Anniversary

Only two men are left alive from the 80 airmen and pilots who took off from the deck of the USS Hornet on April 18, 1942, and set out to send Japan a message that the U.S. would stop at nothing to win the war begun by Japan a few months earlier.

Retired Lt. Col. Richard "Dick" Cole, 99, and Staff Sgt. David Thostaer, 93, are the last of the Doolittle Raiders - the men who struck the first blow against the Japanese empire by bombing Tokyo. They are in Dayton, Ohio, today to present the Raiders Congressional Gold Medal to the National Museum of the US Air Force.

The Doolittle Raid has long been praised as mostly a morale-boosting proof of America's commitment to take the war to Japan but it was more than that - it was a physical demonstration that US had already gotten inside Japan's OODA loop and this drove the Japanese military to make mistakes that ended up costing them the war.

The audaciousness of the raid had a big effect on American morale, but it was the Japanese, shaken by the notion that their cities were not invulnerable, who were affected even more. The military actually moved up plans to attack Port Morseby, New Guinea and Midway Island. When our codebreakers, who had cracked one of the Japanese navy cyphers, intercepted the information, the resulting naval engagements in Coral Sea and especially the decisive battle off of Midway Island sealed the fate of Japan and sent us on the road to victory.

Mark Dean, Engineer Extraordinaire

Mark E. Dean joined IBM in 1980 right after he graduated from the University of Tennessee. Within a year, Dean led a team that developed the Industry Standard Architecture bus in 1981, which would allow computers to print out information and integrate with other external devices. He would hold three of the nine parents associated with that revolutionary IBM Model 5150, which had a 4.77 hertz processor, which was first released on August 12, 1981.

Less than 20 years later, Dean would lead a team that in 1999 developed the first gigahertz chip, which was able to process a billion calculations in one second.

In between times, Dean would develop the color monitor as he would eventually hold 40 patents. And in 1992, he earned his PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford.

Not bad for a kid from the Smoky Mountains who was among the first black students to integrate Jefferson City, Tennessee, schools.

...He was a smart young man and hard worker, so much so that a white friend in sixth grade once asked him if he were really black.

"That was the problem -- the assumption about what blacks could do was tilted," Dean said years later, after he earned his doctorate.

Play of the Day: Chicago Cubs Pitcher Jon Lester Throws Entire Glove to First Base For the Out

Quick thinking on both the pitcher's and first baseman's part.

A Chicago Cubs player was forced to improvise under some unusual circumstances Sunday in their game against the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field.

Clint Barmes hit a ground ball to pitcher Jon Lester, who scooped it up but couldn't get it out of his glove.

Realizing it was stuck, he decided to just throw his entire glove instead.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo saw it coming, so he quickly dropped his own glove to catch Lester's.

"That's the smartest play in the history of baseball," said the announcer.

32 Last flight out of Saigon, and there were still people on the ladder trying to get out.

Meanwhile, there are what 3,000 people in the US Embassy in Baghdad, and another 2K or so 'trainers' scattered around the country. How many helicopters would that take if the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were to close the airport saying that it was too dangerous to fly, and too dangerous to travel overland to a sea port or border crossing.

87 Watching the P-51 vids I was impressed with the constant checking, checking, checking, checking, touching switches, levers, gauges. There is a thing called 'scan rate', how quickly, and how often you check instruments. Add in checking for other traffic, then add in navigation during cross country flying, and make it combat with enemy aircraft, and it's easy to see just how quickly a single pilot gets overloaded.

In the books about Vietnam the pilots turned off threat receivers because they were just too busy.

143 OK a small quibble, a tentative quibble, and an exasperated harumph.

Small quibble: Doolittle Raid was not first blow against Japanese Empire, there were Central Pacific raids, and I think raids against occupied Wake Island, prior to that. Definitely first raid on home islands, obviously, and Maet is right to quote the part about how the raid led directly to the Midway operation and an early end to Japanese naval supremacy ("early" but almost exactly on Yamamoto's "schedule" as he warned the rest of the Jap high command before Pearl Harbor).

Tentative quibble: that Saigon photo is of an embassy annex, I think, and involved either USAID or "other govt. agency" (ahemm) employees (Vietnamese nationals). The last flight out of the embassy grounds, with the ambassador, flag, etc., was done by the CH-46 Lady Ace, now on display at the Flying Leatherneck's museum at MCAS Miramar (in fact there is a commemoration of the flight and the associated evac mission later this month - invites/pamphlets are in English and Vietnamese).

Exasperated harumph: Prof Reynolds is a smart, good, guy blah blah blah. But he's always stumbled using the stupid "I'll believe it's a crisis when (fill in the blank) acts like it's a crisis". Really, Glenn? So if I start walking on my hands because I declare it's the only way to avoid the Earth's gravitation field collapsing, you'll take that prospect seriously?

I'm fairly sure, without talking with him, thatReynolds does not believe there is a climate crisis because it's scientifically ludicrous to claim so, not because DiCaprio flies in private jets. But he keeps using this limp bit of illogical tough talk, instead of simply dismissing climastrology on the merits.

Vanilla Sky is the classic Phillip K Dick question of: Once you start messing with reality, how can you tell when you stopped? (no, Dick had nothing to do with the story, it is a remake of a Spanish movie)

I had a girlfriend who wanted to see sexy and romantic movies. She chose Enemy at the Gates and Vanilla Sky back to back.

We stopped going to movies after that.

Who came riding to Whiterun from old Rorikstead

And the braggart did swagger and brandish his blade
As he told of bold battles and gold he had made

But then he went quiet, did Ragnar the Red
When he met the shield-maiden Matilda, who said;

"Oh, you talk and you lie and you drink all our mead
Now I think it's high time that you lie down and bleed!"

And so then came clashing and slashing of steel
As the brave lass Matilda charged in, full of zeal

And the braggart named Ragnar was boastful no more-
When his ugly red head rolled around on the floor!

Obama was able to energize the absolute base of the Dem party, blacks. When a black in on the ticket, and all things being equal, they will turn out in droves and push a candidate over the top.

The states that Obama flipped from Bush were states that have sizeable black populations that could make a difference in a close election. It is how VA, NC, IN, and FL were able to be flipped. I just don't see Hillary getting blacks out to the polls like Obama did, and let's be honest, women are pretty evenly split between GOP and Dem, so she won't get the "girl power" bump because it just isn't there.

In a back-and-forth exchange Bannion made the comment to T9 "wear kevlar". T9 objected on the grounds that that was an implied threat (which it is, in a smart-mouth, off-handed way).

Then Bannion doubled down by (1) socking T9, and (2) mocking him in a "waah waah, I'm so butthurt" mode. I can easily see why T9 was annoyed. And he's not a guy that I would necessarily agree with on every point down the line, but really. Life is too short to have to deal with 12-year-olds and their taunting every day of the week.

The Libby lynching, and the whole response of the Bush Admin. to the idiotic Wilson op-ed, sort of encompasses the degradation of the country that went into hyper-drive starting around 2004.

Wonder if Andy McCarthy has said anything about this. He defended Fitzgerald pretty much tribalistically at the time, when people were pointing out how absurd the whole goat-rope was.

4.77 hertz is actually correct.

See, back then core memory was used, and flipping the rings on the wires, by the nixies, to indicate a 1 or a 0 took time. Then they had to light up the correct number in their tubes, and this took a lot of time because they were running around checking memory locations, turning neon lamps of various colors on as they looked in the various locations and then trying to save energy by turning them off. It was all very tiring, which led to sore muscles and aches.

I mean seriously, Representative William Jefferson finally got nailed but only after getting a standing ovation from the dems in the House under Speaker Pelosi. Ted Kennedy killed a woman then went drinking in a bar instead of saving her or calling the cops then spent his career raping and groping women and he's the lion of the Senate? Jack Murtha gets busted in a cocaine for foreign money sting and turns a dime on his fellow congressmen then spends the rest of his life being reelected. It's always a shock to me when one of them is actually toppled by their horrific behavior.

285 Chris Taylor, well put - "fact-free and law-free". Actually one of the many key moments that changed my perception of the country as it is today. And don't forget the still-incomprehensible response of the Bush people to the idiotic op-ed.

Friend in the east called me the morning it was published (a Saturday, kind of a graveyard for op-eds, actually). We talked mostly about other stuff but had worked out the complete response to it in 2 minutes. Interns could have handled it. And, of course, it represented opportunity #1,245 to dismantle the Everest of false premises and myths that made up almost every MSM story on Iraq while demolishing the specific silliness at hand.

Instead, the surreal "panic" over a non-event, then the even more surreal "controversy" over the completely irrelevant question of how Wilson got tapped to do his very minor and essentially inconsequential little mission. And then the kafkaesque prosecution of a non-event. Every single player ended up looking stupid, or evil, or both.

299 Yep, Christopher, it's probably just to have more revenue-generating events (the long seasons). Which is their right. And thereby (at least in hockey, and yes there are other factors) dilute the product to the point that some fans (like me) pretty much gave up on the sport. Not kidding about watching hockey starting around Memorial Day. A ridiculously long season in a very rough sport like hockey, where nearly every team makes the post-season, is sort of a lab experiment in perverse incentives against intensity and quality.

Hockey's also got the self-imposed debility of opting for the lower demographics by keeping fighting. Never made $$$$ sense. Another reason post-season is less intolerable/boring - very little pro wrestling, er, "fighting" crap. Funny how that works.

He did that PBS show where a celebrity has his ancestry looked up. He found out that one of his ancestors was a slave owner, and asked that that part was left out of the finished show. They complied. Which is, of course, dishonest. PBS even admitted that other celebrities, including Anderson Cooper, had found out that they too had a slave owning ancestor, but didn't ask to have the fact excluded.

Me: You have to wonder, if she was willing to lie to a judge to free a child's rapist, does she even have a moral compass? What would be too heinous in her mind? Just something to think about.

End of conversation.

320 Some gigs pay mileage, some pay _some_ mileage, and some pay none at all. But it helps if you can split gas money with other musicians.

Saturday's gig had "Pines," the "Scottish Fantasy" by Bruch, the second set of "Ancient Airs and Dances" also by Respighi, and "Ravish and Mayhem" by Stephanie Berg, a composer friend of mine.

Today was Baroque music by Telemann, Bach, and Vivaldi.

And tonight I have lots more practicing to do for the next pair of auditions. 8-)

Even the women enamored w the idea of the "first woman President" can't accept a woman who lied to free a rapist. I usually throw in the part where she pretty much refers to the girl as being from the wrong side of the tracks, as if that made it acceptable for Hillary to victimize her again.

Man, I hate being old, I witnessed all the crap being discussed first hand on the nightly propaganda organs. Gotta remember, this was back when the MSM had a steel grip on almost every news outlet except shortwave radio.

Back in the early 90's alt.binaries.clinton.whitewater was pretty lively. When Shillery said "Vast right wing conspiracy" is was like a bomb went off with everyone saying we were *IT* because we ran everything through that group and verified everything we could through multiple sources. Ya'll really need to look up James Orlin Grabbe, that guy had a way of being spot on about all things Clinton.

I don't think he coined the term 'Ozark Longmarch' but he was there when it was first mentioned, credit for that goes to WJB III I believe. All the prophesies are coming true, bitch is making her run exactly as predicted, although the outcome is still uncertain.

340 The "National Enquirer" broke a scandal about Hillary this week (dateline April 27) that's so red-hot even Drudge hasn't touched it: it's in the issue with Natalie Woods on the cover.

They have a "high-ranking insider" source in the Clinton campaign who's saying the famously "deleted" emails are packed full of lesbian references -- and her lovers' names. Said the source:

"I don't think she's so concerned about emails referring to her as secretly gay," said the Clinton insider. "That's been out for years -- her real fear is that the names of some of her lovers would be made public!"

The article goes on to say that the list of Hillary's lovers "includes a beauty in her early 30s who has often traveled with Hillary; a popular TV and movie star; the daughter of a top government official; and a stunning model who got a career boost after allegedly sleeping with Hillary."

For the rest, you can see the article at The National Enquirer online.

And remember: these are the boys who had the stones to go after John Edwards and were the Only ones who published anything about his affair and love child with a mistress, while his wife was dying of cancer.

Lastly: this makes all kinds of sense, if you think about it. She and Bill have an alliance, not a marriage: perfect for him, because who else would be willing to put up with his constant philandering, besides a woman who's "just not that [sexually] into him"? Vehicle for the ambitions of both parties. And you know, she's not really his "type" physically (IYKWIMAITYD).

Posted by: rhomboid at April 20, 2015 12:17 AM (afQnV)

Ever watched European hockey? That shit is unwatchable because there is no fighting, and it's not because of the fighting.

Euro hockey is the dirtiest brand of hockey you can watch. Cheap shots, stick holding, high sticking, slashing, spearing and running goalies. Why? Simple, all they get is 2 minutes for taking out the other teams best player. Wayne Gretzky could never have played in Europe because he would have been the subject of numerous cheap shots a game.

But, he played in the NHL which had fighting, and so Marty McSorley there to make sure that any cheap shots were taken care of before there could be a second cheap shot. So, nobody every did cheap shot Gretzky.

Also, hockey is the only major sport where the participants skate around with a weapon in their hand. Take out the fighting, and they start swinging sticks instead of fists.

Brooks, Noonan, and Powell all sucked on Obama's cock hard.

But you can't deny Palin's sucking on Hillary's cock throughout 2008 election about "breaking the glass ceiling" and shit was kind of off putting. I guess she was trying to appeal to the "Clinton" Democrats, but Democrats will always support the party candidate.

Very underrated movie.

Every "star" player I knew loved having the team "Enforcer" around. The successful coaches knew to keep a player that could fill that role, while the unsuccessful ones decided that they needed a player with more skill was going to make a difference. It usually doesn't because your star player never gets protected.

402 Interesting thing about Baroque music is that is was designed to produce just one particular mood, or affect, per piece (or suite). See "affective doctrine."

So they weren't jerking you around in real time, mood-wise, the way composers did in the later romantic music. They just wanted to keep you in one place for a while. That was the cultural imperative at the time.

If I remember rightly, they borrowed that idea from what they thought the ancient Greeks were doing with their music.

Posted by: Ira Weatheral at April 20, 2015 02:45 AM (qry2M)

452 VERY interesting moment in a conversation tonight.

Was at a party and chatting in a group with an older man who it turned out was a professor of neuroscience at [major local university you've all heard of].

We were talking about neuroscience in films and I mentioned one of my favorites, Truffaut's "The Wild Child." The prof mentioned that the doctor character was based on a real person named Dr. Itard, whose pioneering work studying mental defects (such as the Wild Child case) was later influential in the development of the first intelligence tests, which were devised in France.

He then added, "But I can't mention that in my classes."

Another person in the conversation piped in, "Oh yeah, the concept of IQ is now taboo on campus." Someone else (in our group of four) asked "Why?"

And then the prof said something shocking -- I should put that in sarcasm quotes -- "shocking," in that the fact itself was not shocking, but merely the reality of him enunciating it publicly was shocking.

He said it very diplomatically -- I'm trying to remember his exact wording. I think it was,

"Because IQ and ethnicity are closely correlated in every study ever conducted. So much so that one could look at the Stanford-Binet scores of any cohort, presented just as numerical data, double-blind, and determine the ethnic ratios in that cohort, just based on its overall average score."

Now, of course this is true, but it was mind-blowing that a professor in this day and age would actually make a true statement.

Little asides he had made earlier in the conversation hinted to me that he was sick and tired of laboring under the daily yoke of political correctness and the constant "emperor has no clothes" dishonesty and normative conformity it imposes on everyone. He was close to retirement age, and I think he was just starting to go Full Bullworth and say "Fuck you" to the Lysenkoist establishment controlling his field.

Ruth White's "Short Circuits" came out when Carlos only had "Switched-On Bach" and "The Well-Tempered Synthesizer" -- and gave him a run for his money.....

Walter started with baroque music because the Moog Modular was a tempermental and monotimbral device, and he could use strict timing and multitrack recording to build compelling renditions, sometimes using "hocketing" (splitting a single instrument into two alternating tracks) to make the rack of cabinets sound more musical. White's approach was somewhat different -- she dove in and chased monotimbral musical threads through her selected pieces. Take http://tinyurl.com/kwyq8l2 for instance.....the bee is a distinctly different "voice" from any of the background, and you'll soon note that the background voices are distinct from each other, as well -- what seem to be chords are more like random meetings of "spoing", "bloop", and "dong" sounds.

At the moment in about 1972 when they both coexisted, they were both groundbreaking. But, then, White went "foop" and disappeared....and Angel records went "foop" and disappeared, and (so far as I know) there never were any Ruth White recordings on CD. Whereas I've got everything Wendy Carlos has ever done on CD.

So, where I'm also a huge Wendy Carlos fan, to find Ruth White recordings on YouTube is a special treat.

Oh, and she isn't the only one.....http://tinyurl.com/n3qnh7b

People get tired of being bullied, and when they have nothing left to lose, they don't care about the consequences anymore.

That's a lesson the Left never learns. It works in the individual scale and the large scale, and you bully people at your own risk because of it. The day will come when there's nothing left to lose.

I'm not trying to be hopeless, but rather, hopeful. When people get tired of being pushed around, they push back. This is the thing that'll save us, even if everything else falls down. People don't ever break completely, we're not animals to be domesticated and made to jump through flaming hoops for the amusement of the masters.

I hope it won't even come to that point. I don't believe in the no-win scenario. So we've got problems. So does every other fur-deficient lemur descendant on this mudball. There's a way through this, we just don't see it yet.

I vaguely recall an anecdote where Aaron Burr was at home in New York when his wife went traveling -- so he sent a carriage to bring his mistress to his mansion. His wife's plans changed and she returned home much sooner than expected.

So, when the carriage pulled up, Burr walked out to it with his wife, helped his mistress from the carriage, and said: "Miss Smith, Mrs. Burr; Mrs. Burr, Miss Smith -- I'm sure you have a lot to talk about...." -- then got in the carriage and drove off.

541 For dinner tonight, I made bisquick biscuits......with added garlic powder, savory, dill, parsley, and shredded cheese. I used my toaster oven pan, but lined it with aluminum foil (to keep it clean) and then with baking parchment (an experiment).

It is so much better with the parchment.

542 I'm taking Kirsten Powers behind the woodshed on twitter this AM....

Seems Ms Powers is slagging US Xianity and crying for the Copts again.

For some reason, I'm not getting all your tweets in your feed...

Posted by: The Political Hat (@ThePoliticalHat) at April 20, 2015 06:06 AM (0Ew3K)

544 I see why.

If you want your tweets seen by a wider audiance, then it shouldn't start with an @, because only those who subscribe to all handles mentioned will get it.

Always avoid starting with an "@" because you want to make sure you avoid the "direct" implication that is suggested.

Twitter is ding some weird shit with tweetdeck again...

Daddy Warpig thinks they are creating a new version of Twitmo...

Ah ok...

that could explain why I'm not as popular as I once was despite slowly gaining back my TCOT followers...

I really should either get serious about twitter or get off it...

probably getting off of it is the better call.

If you are responding to an advisary, then *always* make it public by prefixing any "@" address with a "." or what not.

If you don't then it is considered "private" and may result in "Twitmo" for a directed offense. If you make it public with a "." listed before the initial "@", then you can avoid this.

Posted by: The Political Hat (@ThePoliticalHat) at April 20, 2015 06:13 AM (0Ew3K)

548 I try to trim every character I can... the "." prior to the "@" makes me even less coherent...

(not that that seems possible)

Unless you intend the tweet to be restricted, just don't start out with an "@".

If you make it public, then it is harder to argue that you made a "private" threat.

Roger, I'm practicing.... of course given the presence of DM it is hard in my estimation to argue ANY "tweet" is "private" but not my rules or place.
