Early Morning Thread 4/18/15: Got the wings of Heaven on my shoes edition [krakatoa]

Surviving another mass layoff is better than the alternative.

I think.

TFG's economy just gives and gives.

9 Fellow soldiers dropping like flies around you, eh?

All the while you're waiting for the bullet (or in this case, pink slip) that turns you into a casualty or a corpse.

Do they still have pink slips?

I've never got one. It's usually "get your ass outta here".

Mostly I've left before the axe fell. I saw that thing coming a mile away usually.

Mass firings are very bad for a company. Better to do layoffs or buyouts. But some places don't have the cash so . . .

So. Other than that How's it goin'?

Which I won't, just have to say it to ward off the jinx. Been watching some old matches on Youtube, Rugby's not a hard sport to call, not a lot of inside lingo. 53 So, FenelonSpouse-my better half-works in grocery store in the produce section. So I always ask when spouse comes home," How was work today? "Yesterday was exciting. They opened up a crate of limes (from Mexico) and there was a huge hairy spider with an egg sac. Somebody said it was a wolf spider, but nobody was sure. Because it was in the refrigerated section it was torpid and they trapped it under something. They have to call someone in the State Dept of something to check it out. So lots of people were coming over to the produce dept to look at the spider except for one of FenelonSpouses co-workers who was freaking .
out. We live in an old house. It would not be a good place to live if you had any fear of spiders and I really don't mostly, but big hairy ones-no, I don't think I would have wanted to find that. The kid who did is, I think, on the autism spectrum and seems pretty unflappable about things-just works very very hard and doesn't have a lot to say.

58 The day might bring us some hell-but I won't know about if I mostly not here. ;^) What is has brought me so far is a lovely sunrise, a woman jogging followed about a quarter of a while back by some adorable shepherd type dog running who looked like he was having the time of his life and some Latino guy in the Wawa-(equivalent to 7/11 if you don't have that where you are) who was wearing a large cross and I had a nice conversation with him. His English needed work but when I said the persecution of Christians will be getting worse, so I admire your courage in wearing a cross he said, "I don't care; I am who I am" So, not a bad start to the day at all.

62 So the Russians put a jet engine on a tractor to clear FOD off their carrier decks? When I was at Halliburton, talked to this guy who worked for the oil well firefighting division once, who talked about a job he had in Russia. Seems the Russians did something similar there. Had a jet engine mounted on the body of a tank, in place of a turret and gun. The tank would roll up to the burning oil well and they'd try to put it out with the jet engine's exhaust. Apparently it did help.

92 It is much easier to list every case where Emperor Ten Putt has told the truth about something than it is to list his lies. The unemployment rate is one of his lies of course.

The day any Republican replaces The Doper in the White House will be the first day of the Greater Depression. The media will be ripe with stories of the plight of the unemployed and how the burden is falling mainly on Blacks, Womenz, and Yutes.

Suddenly the true unemployment figures will emerge, along with daily casualty reports from Afghanistan. Of course the fact that combat deaths have been greater during Obama's term than during Bush's somehow never makes the nightly news.

Remember how we were constantly told how many soldiers were dying in Iraq? It was never mentioned that more of our soldiers there died from traffic accidents than from enemy action. In other words we killed more of our military by accident in Iraq than the enemy could kill intentionally.

And President Boy, or failing that, a President Cruz, should be right there with the stats that the MFM has ignored for 8 years.

The presstitutes need a good slapdown. Their many examples of double standards aren't difficult to find.

In fact, any candidate would do well to have a flunky with an iPad handy with a few of those examples. "Oh, you want to talk about the economy now? After 8 years of this? *points to any number of declining economic indicators on giant screen* Where were you then?"

"Europeans" in the sense of Russo-Siberian nomads *maybe* of course there's a part of me that thinks "which time they were discovered?"

I have a theory that these two continents are cursed and the civilizations on them eventually commit suicide.

South American Indians look to have some Polynesian on the woodpile, the Aleut and Inuit both have Sino-Nip-Hongul features and the Plains indians favor the aforementioned Russso-Siberian proto nomads...

I try not to get too wrapped up in "the racial lines of migration" b/c frankly political correctness rears its head and says "YOU ARE ENGAGED IN RACIAL SUPERIORITY GAMES" and at the end of the day I am more wrapped up in creeds and commerce than skin color/culture.

They actually settled...The Chinese fleet theory hasn't stood up investigation, if I recall correctly. In any case, there were Europeans here before Columbus - the Norse, most famously, but also fishermen who were fishing off the grand banks possibly as far back as the thirteenth century, I think. It is certainly a LOT easier to reach the Americas from Europe than from Asia.

I strongly suspect that Columbus was so very certain that the world was only a fraction of the size that his contemporaries (and modern science) claimed was that he knew there was land out there from some unofficial sources and couldn't conceive of the possibility that it was anything but the Indies. Ergo, the experts had to be wrong...

There had to have been plenty of knowledge exchanged between Marco Polo's time and Magellan's voyages regarding the Indo/Asian region. I'd bet that Magellan had access to or had studied any available maps of that region before he pulled anchor.

Which makes me wonder what "discover" really means.

From the Latin root discooperire, it's the opposite of "cover." Makes sense.

So is there an implied second party in there? Does one "discover" something if he doesn't share it with another person? Or does it extend to third parties? If a new piece of knowledge doesn't make it to the world at large, is it a "discovery?"
