Every tow lot I've ever been to has had a 12 gauge shotgun prominently displayed on the wall. It had a soothing effect and I was one pissed off motherfr. So that was a clear case of a gun reducing violence. Posted by: SE Pa Moron at April 16, 2015 02:49 PM (xQX/f) 19

See, I don't think "Twitter is suicide."
I think "Twitter + narcissism = suicide." And I get that having your car towed sucks- from personal experience I know that to be true- but that doesn't mean you get to yell and scream at the tow lot attendant. It's not like she, personally, towed your car. And it's not like the tow-truck driver just *chose* to tow your car. Someone called them and asked that your car be impounded. Yell at whoever that is. FWIW, I had my car towed once.
When I got to the lot, the woman in the little booth wanted me to sign a piece of paper saying any damage to the car was present when the tow truck picked it up...before telling me where my car was. I said hah, let's go look at the car and I'll tell you what, if any, damage was on the car before you towed it. Woman gave me all kinds of shit, but since I was with my sister-in-law at the time (and therefore a witness to what they were demanding of me before they released the car), she relented and led us to the car. No damage, I signed, and was off. Point being, impound clerks can be righteous bitches too. Not excusing this McHenry woman's behavior, but I can maybe understand it a bit, especially if the clerk was doing the whole patronizing routine that I got. So was her car legally towed or was it sketchy?
I've had an unbidden tow truck hook up my car and be on the verge of leaving when I was legally parked. We had stopped at a downtown take-out lunch place where there is parking in the rear and clearly marked for customers only. Was not in there for more than 10min and I catch them doing this, so I start waving my takeout bag at them an yelling "What are you doing????" They promptly unhooked my car and apologized, because they knew they got caught. However if they had successfully towed my car I would have been raging as I paid off the towing fee, too. I've had my car towed once. It was a Friday, and I got confused thinking it was a Saturday (I had the day off). It was okay to park there Saturday, but not Friday. So the car got towed, and I was annoyed about that. But I stayed relatively pleasant to the officer and the tow guy (I came out just as they'd finished hooking my car up).
The next day, however... I ran around like crazy that night via bus (LA County busses suck, btw) and foot to get the fines taken care of. Then on Saturday, I'd estimate that I walked a little over a mile one way to get to the impound lot. Said impound lot was open. There were drivers and a female staff member sitting around doing absolutely nothing. But they couldn't let me take my vehicle. It seems that on Saturday, they "close" at noon. And they were closed on Sunday. Easter Sunday, btw. And they charge for each day that your car is in the impound lot. I said a few impolite things on my way out. So I'm not going to criticize anyone who gets pissed off at the impound lot people. Posted by: junior at April 16, 2015 02:59 PM (43pPh) 81

Yeah, probably, but she shouldn't lose her job over this. Lots of people are assholes. Some good old fashioned embarrassment ought to be sufficient.
Should be, but won't. 1) She *knew* she was on camera, and proceeded to be a jerk anyway. 2) She will be advised not to apologize- because that (in America's f*cked up system) is an admission of guilt. Therefore, the mob won't be silenced (not that they would be even if she apologized- I hate this piranha-like feeding-frenzy world in which we live), and so she'll almost certainly lose her job. And I'm not sure if I think she should be fired or not. I've never heard of her until Ace posted this, but if she's a TV personality, part of what she trades on is an image that she's "nice." Having shattered that, and not having enough clout on her own, she probably is no longer suited to her on-air duties. If she's *not* an on-air personality, then I don't see how this directly affects her ability to do her job. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at April 16, 2015 03:00 PM (kff5f) 93

Honestly, who hasn't given corrupt clowns that tow your car and then hold it hostage for cash some crap. It's a little over the top to attack the clerk who is just trying to feed her family. I suppose I'd just offer the observation that any time your car gets
towed, you are probably at the angriest and pissiest of any recent day of your life. There's been about one repossession a week in the parking lot of the building where I work. It's fairly entertaining; the tow truck (proclaiming "buy a car at Whosits even with shitty credit") has a pair of guys and they take about a minute to check the VIN and hook up and outta there. Then at 4:30 when the company upstairs lets out, we watch out the windows to see if we can spot the vehicle owner. Some days it's obvious. Some days they must have gotten a phone call about it. In Boston, they alternate the cleaning of the streets every other week. If you are parked on the street, you must move your car to some mythical spot before (I forget, 7 or 8 am) on the day your side is to be cleaned. Tow trucks are literally lined up one after the other and if you are 1 minute late, or sometimes not a few minutes early, your car is getting the hook.It will cost you about $100 to get it back not to mention the cost of the taxi to get you to the yard. It's not just the tow -- it's also the storage fee and any other "fee" they deem is it warranted. You cannot argue with a tow company -- it will only delay the inevitable and cost you more money. Plus, they're not responsible for all the damage they do to your car, which could be extensive and costly. Posted by: Soothsayer's innapropiate participation at April 16, 2015 03:13 PM (H1DmM) 159
I don't think she has any hurt coming. Towing companies are the lowest of the low, stealing cars under the nominal color of law.
Most of the time they ARE scams, towing cars from places that are not properly signed as being private lots -- which IS car theft. Here in Texas there is a new specialty of suing towing companies that towed your car for triple damages, and they are cleaning up. Posted by: Phelps at April 16, 2015 03:13 PM (r3vyg) 160

Depends on specifics, I think, but in virtually all cases the title to the car is your collateral for the loan, which means they are only contractually entitled to your car. If they repo it, they have to discharge the rest of the debt (which isn't good for your credit) along with it. Except If you owe enough outstanding on your loan, and your car will not cover it (say, it's damaged and you've never repaired it, or it's in really bad condition on the interior), they can, at least in theory, take you to court for some additional amount. @131 Thanks wrg, and I gotta say, the tatas look somewhut more substantial in this shot, but the elbows, and knees, are just strange. Like, out of line somehow and just held together with ligaments (which when you think of it, they really are, but, still). Plus in this one, it's the teeth that look fake. When it comes to the glamour-mask, that veneer is mighty thin, and it doesn't take much to warp it.
Know how Restoration women all look like kinky whores, with their lead-pancake complexions and fake wart, and all? 90% of famously-beauty is little tricks like that, and in a few years when they're out of style the famous-beauty just looks funny. There's your difference between "true beauty," meaning handsome/attractive/fresh/honest, or, let's say, symmetrical anyway, and "glamour." This one is glamorous. It shines and it stinks like a rotten mackerel by moonlight. Posted by: Stringer Davis at April 16, 2015 03:17 PM (xq1UY) 197

I think celebs trot out the "don't you know who I am" thing because 99 times out of 100 they are treated special and get free stuff simply because of who they are - and those who don't know change completely once they find out most of the time. In her (limited) defense, tow companies are among the most corrupt scammers I've ever encountered. I had the bad fortune to be involved in a civil case where a tow company owner gunned down a guy who was trying to retrieve his car after it had been towed. The evidence showed the tow company frequently used scams and dishonest practices to tow people who were parked (or thought they were parked) legitimately. As the case unfolded, the evidence was so damning that even though it appeared to be a "good shoot" (the guy retrieving his car was trying to run down the tow truck guy), the case settled for a rather large sum, simply because the tow truck company's practices were virtually indefensible.
Unfortunately, my client (who was really peripheral to the case) was not nearly as attractive as Britt McHenry. Posted by: What, me worry? at April 16, 2015 03:42 PM (vDEpI) 264
I had my car towed illegally from the garage in the building where I worked. When I explained to the tow company how they screwed up and I wasn't paying the towing and impoundment fees they told me to sue them, but they would still charge me x number of dollars per day.

From the comments on that Arlington story:
"I work in a building that overlooks Advanced Towing's goldmine: Colonial Village Shopping Center in Rosslyn, VA. The setup is confusing, and many people assume that they can use the lot when eating at 100 Montaditos and Ray's the Third. AT tows car after car after car - they must make a fortune off this one lot. A couple of weeks ago I saw an older lady park and walk across the street to Ray's - an AT driver pulled up as she read the sign on Ray's door (alerting patrons to the fact that they can't use that lot) - the driver swooped in and raised her car as she rushed back - and she tripped. It wasn't a bad fall, but still, she fell. Watching this old woman brush herself off and then pull cash out of her purse to pay the drop fee was sad. The whole scene took less than 60 seconds to play out and it really bugged me." Posted by: Brewdog at April 16, 2015 03:49 PM (ZgUuK) 271

> She parked her car and came back 2 hours after the establishment closed (meaning she was not a customer the whole time) and insulted another woman's weight. Later: > Haha. Ok. And when I post the video you'll say I deserved to be called fat. Bottom line is she got towed. She should not have left her car unattended in a private lot to patronize another bar. 267 We can only imagine:
That's $495.00, mam (I'm sure Ms. McHenry doesn't like "mam"). Sorry, we don't take American Express. We'll need a photo id and a major credit card if you use a personal check. Posted by: Washington Post commentor at April 16, 2015 04:01 PM (bpemY) 275
They published a picture of Ikea Solo's light saber too but it isn't shown in the preview:

267 I have your car. I'm fat but you won't get your car unless you write me a big fat check.

Some tow operations are scam companies with crooked deals to enhance city revenue. I withhold judgment until I know why the car was towed and if it was warranted.

The bit about "von der Maas bis an die Memel, von der Etsch bis an den Belt" kind of argues against that, but I guess they dropped that whole verse after 1945. Posted by: SparcVark at April 16, 2015 05:05 PM (nKOXj) 282

This bitch parks wherever she wants and then berates the clerk when she has to pay her fine? Another special snowflake with an acute sense of entitlement.

Anyone who lived in Chicago during the 70s-80s lived in mortal fear of the notorious Lincoln Park towing company that would gleefully tow your car if it was an inch into a prohibited area. The late Steve Goodman wrote a song about them which you can find on YouTube: The Lincoln Park Pirates. I never fell victim to them but once came out of a Broadway play at 11 pm to find out that my car had been towed. I had to stay overnight in a hotel since I didn't live in NYC and borrow cash from a friend the next day to get it back. It cost me lots of money I didn't have. ..so I'm with Blondie on this one...in my dreams.

While working at a shipyard a co-worker and myslef had our cars towed. We were parked in a place we (and others) often parked, but that day it seems a truck had to take a large load through the area and they had all the cars towed. We were with another guy who wasn't towed and he gave us a ride to retrieve our cars. It sucked, and we couldn't access our cars before paying, and security was tight. I was pissed, but acted decent to the people that worked there. Posted by: DonS at April 16, 2015 07:15 PM (MLzEj) 286
Yeah, this is bullshit. People are judgmental assholes.
First of all, look at the video. It's clearly been edited. Why go through the bother? What is the towing company trying to hide, allegations of illegal practices, the clerk being every bit as nasty? The article pointed out that the towing company had a one star rating on yelp, but then just waved it off as part of being a towing company. But a quick search through yelp shows that that's not the case, towing companies generally have decent to good reviews if they're not a bunch of shady fucks. Then I went to Advanced Towing's yelp page. Lots of specific allegations of illegal/highly suspect activity. The lady at the front desk makes several appearances because of how horrible she is (including a part where she called a lady a scammer and a felon for refuting a double-charge). Check it out and tell me these people didn't deserve whatever the ESPN lady said and a whole hell of a lot more. http://www.yelp.com/biz/advanced-towing-arlington So, yeah. Bullshit. This lady's going to lose her job and get her life destroyed because she got rolled by a borderline criminal organization and everybody on the damn internet is too lazy for a single google search. Only 135.00 ?? Fucking wow! 135.00 AND she got to use her CC?
She better never move from VA. She would FREAK OUT what the BIG City charges for towing. 135.00... give me a bloody break! Posted by: Cate at April 16, 2015 09:41 PM (CV0ec) 291

Pretty girl! Too bad she's such an asshole.
Seriously, lady, yelling at a wage-slave like that does you no good. You might be able to make her feel bad, but what does that gain you? On the other hand, being nice to someone who's forced to interact with you due to your bad parking decisions has a chance of getting you a little break on your fees. Especially if you're also pretty. I've read posts from towing company employees at customerssuck.com, and I know they actually have quite a bit of leeway in assessing/forgiving your fees. But if you're an asshole to them, they have zero incentive to use their discretion to your benefit. Moral of the story: don't be an asshole. Oh, I see ESPenis has suspended Madame Britt for a week over this incident. It's rare for me to say this, but good for them.

Gonna need more pictures of Britt. To form an opinion...
Posted by: brak ------------------------------------------- Marry the twit and you will have an instant opinion as she rakes you over. She was berating the cashier, not the tow driver. The cashier didn't deserve it on bit. Posted by: johnmc at April 17, 2015 10:19 AM (ZVUS/) 295
