Every tow lot I've ever been to has had a 12 gauge shotgun prominently displayed on the wall. It had a soothing effect and I was one pissed off motherfr.

And I get that having your car towed sucks- from personal experience I know that to be true- but that doesn't mean you get to yell and scream at the tow lot attendant.
It's not like she, personally, towed your car. And it's not like the tow-truck driver just *chose* to tow your car. Someone called them and asked that your car be impounded. Yell at whoever that is.

When I got to the lot, the woman in the little booth wanted me to sign a piece of paper saying any damage to the car was present when the tow truck picked it up...before telling me where my car was.
I said hah, let's go look at the car and I'll tell you what, if any, damage was on the car before you towed it. Woman gave me all kinds of shit, but since I was with my sister-in-law at the time (and therefore a witness to what they were demanding of me before they released the car), she relented and led us to the car. No damage, I signed, and was off.
Point being, impound clerks can be righteous bitches too.
Not excusing this McHenry woman's behavior, but I can maybe understand it a bit, especially if the clerk was doing the whole patronizing routine that I got.

I've had an unbidden tow truck hook up my car and be on the verge of leaving when I was legally parked. We had stopped at a downtown take-out lunch place where there is parking in the rear and clearly marked for customers only. Was not in there for more than 10min and I catch them doing this, so I start waving my takeout bag at them an yelling "What are you doing????"
They promptly unhooked my car and apologized, because they knew they got caught. However if they had successfully towed my car I would have been raging as I paid off the towing fee, too.

I ran around like crazy that night via bus (LA County busses suck, btw) and foot to get the fines taken care of. Then on Saturday, I'd estimate that I walked a little over a mile one way to get to the impound lot. Said impound lot was open. There were drivers and a female staff member sitting around doing absolutely nothing. But they couldn't let me take my vehicle. It seems that on Saturday, they "close" at noon.
And they were closed on Sunday.
Easter Sunday, btw.
And they charge for each day that your car is in the impound lot.
I said a few impolite things on my way out.
So I'm not going to criticize anyone who gets pissed off at the impound lot people.

I remember a story by Brian Preston(? or the guy that worked for Michelle Malkin a few years back) that during one of his presidential campaigns, BILL trucked in BUSES of their ops from Arkansas to East Texas for an event. And I'm not sure if I think she should be fired or not. I've never heard of her until Ace posted this, but if she's a TV personality, part of what she trades on is an image that she's "nice." Having shattered that, and not having enough clout on her own, she probably is no longer suited to her on-air duties.
If she's *not* an on-air personality, then I don't see how this directly affects her ability to do her job.

My first office job was as a customer service rep. Yeah, dealt w/a lot of angry people, some of it quite justified (billing errors, botched installations, etc.). There's been about one repossession a week in the parking lot of the building where I work. It's fairly entertaining; the tow truck (proclaiming "buy a car at Whosits even with shitty credit") has a pair of guys and they take about a minute to check the VIN and hook up and outta there. Then at 4:30 when the company upstairs lets out, we watch out the windows to see if we can spot the vehicle owner. Some days it's obvious. Some days they must have gotten a phone call about it.
(We're all horrible people around here. OTOH, we all pay our bills.)

I had my perfectly parked car towed once, out of a private parking lot... from a place where I was eating.
When I questioned the whole thing, and why my car was towed, they said my car was on the line (it was not)... but it was my word against theirs...
I was told to Sue them if I felt so strongly about it... and in the meantime, if I did not pay, they would keep my car, and add storage fees for every day it was there.
Some of these companies are nothing less than Extortion... and Legal theft...
You should have to have a Parking ticket before someone can TAKE your car IMO...

In Boston, they alternate the cleaning of the streets every other week. If you are parked on the street, you must move your car to some mythical spot before (I forget, 7 or 8 am) on the day your side is to be cleaned.
Tow trucks are literally lined up one after the other and if you are 1 minute late, or sometimes not a few minutes early, your car is getting the hook.It will cost you about $100 to get it back not to mention the cost of the taxi to get you to the yard.
Sorry if this doesn't peg my rage meter but if you think this is a verbal beating you haven't seen nothing. And it is a huge money maker for the city.

Said she couldn't legally tell me if I had chosen "their guy", but she was such a happy camper it was a give-away. Hope they buried him under the jail.

But I'll say this: the only time my car got towed (other than me calling a wrecker) was because I was parked where I wasn't supposed to be.
And still, just because the tow-truck driver had an agreement with the establishment at which you were eating (that, or someone there called them, either way) doesn't mean you should be a hurtful jerk to the clerk.

It's not just the tow -- it's also the storage fee and any other "fee" they deem is it warranted. You cannot argue with a tow company -- it will only delay the inevitable and cost you more money.
Plus, they're not responsible for all the damage they do to your car, which could be extensive and costly.

Most of the time they ARE scams, towing cars from places that are not properly signed as being private lots -- which IS car theft. Here in Texas there is a new specialty of suing towing companies that towed your car for triple damages, and they are cleaning up.

Depends on specifics, I think, but in virtually all cases the title to the car is your collateral for the loan, which means they are only contractually entitled to your car. If they repo it, they have to discharge the rest of the debt (which isn't good for your credit) along with it.
Except
If you owe enough outstanding on your loan, and your car will not cover it (say, it's damaged and you've never repaired it, or it's in really bad condition on the interior), they can, at least in theory, take you to court for some additional amount.
At least, they can in TX.

The idea of your property being seized by a 3rd party and taken for ransom without any sort of due process is a very slippery slope.
They have some laws here that put caps on fees because people were getting charged like $500 for a tow all because some felon driving a tow truck said it was double parked. Who's going to take the time and money to take these people to Court?
I remember a friend having to get his cop relative to go into a shop and get his car back because they wanted something absurd like a thousand bucks.
I have no idea what happened to this woman but most of my dealings have shown they are anything but honest people just making a living.

I have a friend who does insurance adjustments now. He totaled out a guy with basically the same year and model car as me (07 Chevy aveo, shut up it was all I could afford out of college).
Anyway guy owed more on the car than I paid for mine 8 years ago. Close to 10k. Car was worth 3k or so. I'm told when I trade mine in later this year even with almost 90k miles some poor schmuck will probably pay over 6k at one of those shitty places.

Tow services are great for helping breakdowns but total assholes for parking enforcement. No love for people trolling empty parking lots because someone might not properly display a pass. Dicks.

I told the apartment manager off because we had to wait days for them to fix the sewage leak in our bathroom ceiling. I got him to sign a release for the car from the impound lot. When I got to the lot the toothless moron gave me a big smile and started rattling off costs when I said I wanted my car. You could see his face drop when I showed him the waver.
That experience alone made me empathize with the blond.

"I work in a building that overlooks Advanced Towing's goldmine: Colonial Village Shopping Center in Rosslyn, VA. The setup is confusing, and many people assume that they can use the lot when eating at 100 Montaditos and Ray's the Third. AT tows car after car after car - they must make a fortune off this one lot. A couple of weeks ago I saw an older lady park and walk across the street to Ray's - an AT driver pulled up as she read the sign on Ray's door (alerting patrons to the fact that they can't use that lot) - the driver swooped in and raised her car as she rushed back - and she tripped. It wasn't a bad fall, but still, she fell. Watching this old woman brush herself off and then pull cash out of her purse to pay the drop fee was sad. The whole scene took less than 60 seconds to play out and it really bugged me."

While working at a shipyard a co-worker and myslef had our cars towed.
We were parked in a place we (and others) often parked, but that day it seems a truck had to take a large load through the area and they had all the cars towed.
We were with another guy who wasn't towed and he gave us a ride to retrieve our cars. It sucked, and we couldn't access our cars before paying, and security was tight. I was pissed, but acted decent to the people that worked there.

First of all, look at the video. It's clearly been edited. Why go through the bother? What is the towing company trying to hide, allegations of illegal practices, the clerk being every bit as nasty?
The article pointed out that the towing company had a one star rating on yelp, but then just waved it off as part of being a towing company. But a quick search through yelp shows that that's not the case, towing companies generally have decent to good reviews if they're not a bunch of shady fucks.
Then I went to Advanced Towing's yelp page. Lots of specific allegations of illegal/highly suspect activity. The lady at the front desk makes several appearances because of how horrible she is (including a part where she called a lady a scammer and a felon for refuting a double-charge). Check it out and tell me these people didn't deserve whatever the ESPN lady said and a whole hell of a lot more. http://www.yelp.com/biz/advanced-towing-arlington
So, yeah. Bullshit. This lady's going to lose her job and get her life destroyed because she got rolled by a borderline criminal organization and everybody on the damn internet is too lazy for a single google search.

Seriously, lady, yelling at a wage-slave like that does you no good. You might be able to make her feel bad, but what does that gain you?
On the other hand, being nice to someone who's forced to interact with you due to your bad parking decisions has a chance of getting you a little break on your fees. Especially if you're also pretty.
I've read posts from towing company employees at customerssuck.com, and I know they actually have quite a bit of leeway in assessing/forgiving your fees. But if you're an asshole to them, they have zero incentive to use their discretion to your benefit.
Moral of the story: don't be an asshole.
