Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Rubio's RunningYou already knew this but it's official. Sen. Marco Rubio on Monday took on Hillary Rodham Clinton in his first words as a presidential candidate, telling top donors he is running for the Republican nomination because the 2016 race for the White House should be about the future, not the past. ... In previewing his campaign's central message, Rubio said the dream is slipping from too many families' grip, and young Americans face unequal opportunities to succeed. It was a message honed to pitch the GOP as a party that cares about all voters, not just those in upper tax brackets. "I feel uniquely qualified to not just make that argument, but to outline the policies that we need to have in order to achieve it," he said. He's got a big speech (what he does best) set for 5:30 this afternoon in Miami. [added: For some reason he's giving a big post announcement interview to George Stephanopolis. You know, the guy who brought banning contraception into the 2012 GOP campaign.] I'm less than enthused by his candidacy than others will be. Mostly because.... Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

In 1992 and 1996, Republicans won the Asian vote. From 2000 on the Dems have won it and each election has increased the margin.
I think this is the demographic worth pandering to more than Hispanics. In 2014 the GOP won the Asian vote. Mid-term electorates are tottaly different of course, but that might be an opening at least. Get Asians to got from 70/30 Dem to 55/45 and that could mean the difference. Even though as a total % of the population, Asians numbers are small, they are concentrated in a few states so it could swing a 51/49 loss into a 51/49 win in places like Ohio or Virginia. The Democrats have carefully crafted their constituency to garner 50.01% of the vote in the Presidential election. Unions, African Americans, recent immigrants, the alternatively sexual, eviromental whackos, college kids, Muslin, etc. They win those groups, period. They show up every four years. 'Tweener' years not so much.
There's a very narrow band of squishes it is possible to lure. There's only a couple ways to beat them. My short list: Ralph Nader runs Massive (R) turnout Mediocre (D) candidate produces lower (D) turnout Posted by: SE Pa Moron at April 13, 2015 12:33 PM (xQX/f) 294

I'm for reaching out to all groups, but I really think where Republicans could easily improve their numbers is with white females. We improve that number by 4-5% and that would be like winning a majority of Hispanics and Asians combined. Posted by: McAdams at April 13, 2015 12:37 PM (refB/) 295

I'd love to hear their reasoning for running. For money? For fame? For ego?Yes, yes and yes.
Posted by: BHO at April 13, 2015 11:40 AM (C278+) Lincoln called it the 'presidential worm in the belly' that gnaws away at a man's insides until there's nothing for it but to run for it. But look at it this way: the presidency isa job deliberately designed by the Founders to be sought by the country's most capable and ambitious people and most presidents, each in his way and with a few glaring exceptions, has been capable and ambitious. So money? Until recently, I would say not so much. Fame? To a degree. Ego? Certainly true of many. But mainly what it is, I think, is the ability to literally change the world, or at least a piece of it. So yeah: the answer is power. Actually, the answer in politics is always power no matter what the question. Posted by: troyriser at April 13, 2015 12:46 PM (7F9i5) 298

I doubt we'll ever get a majority of Latinos or Hispanics, but if we can just "stop the bleeding" at something like 40%-45% of the vote, that would be a huge victory. What we don't want is a single voting bloc like blacks are for Democrats, then it's game over. I tend to think as Latinos in this country that stay several generations will eventually become like Italians are now. Nobody ever talks about winning the "Italian" vote because they vote just like anyone else.

Yes, because the minute any Republican talks about immigration as a complex, multifaceted issue Except...it isn't. Silicon Valley, the Chamber of Commerce, and Dem voter registration banks want you to think it is, but it isn't. Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at April 13, 2015 11:53 AM (659DL) This. There is nothing complex about enforce the damn law. Remove illegals temporary legal status if they have it. Don't give them taxpayer money and, when they are found here, DEPORT THEM. If they have an anchor baby, deport them anyway. They can take that baby with them back to wherever they came from. Either change the law so that only children born here to people here legally get citizenship or remove the ability of anchor babies to sponsor family members when they grow up. Punish employers who hire illegals (and states that welcome and shield them). Remove the financial incentives for them to stay and most of them will leave on their own.We have laws on the books now that will accomplish most of this. Its not the law that is faulty, its the politicians who think they can talk out of both sides of their mouths that are. Posted by: redbanzai at April 13, 2015 01:10 PM (OrI3J) 303

Every single Republucan candidate shares Jeb's immigration views, and if they don't they're lying *cough* Walker. Rubio at least used his influence in the senate to sit at the bargaining table with the Dems, who were going to push through anything on the heels of all their recent successes.
He did what many of his FL constituents wanted, extended an olive branch to Latinos and gave House Republicans cover to reject the crap sandwich, later admitting it was a bad deal. At least he went after a political third rail without getting burned. Looks matter. Charisma matters. Communication skills matter. They are everything in modern elections. Rubio also has a much stronger resume than Obama's. He's no neophyte. Posted by: Tattoo Ewe For the Year of the Sheep at April 13, 2015 02:09 PM (ITaab) 311

"The immigration system is broken and needs fixing."
If you'd remove the wrench you tossed in its gearbox it would run more smoothly, Senator. I'm sick of hearing the guys who pulled the chord out of the socket complain that the machine isn't working. "Oh, but the problem's too big now - we can't just deport everybody!" This is why "extreme" reactions to "minor" political problems are so necessary early on - they must be nipped in the bud before the enablers permit them to metastasize into Cloward-Piven tumors wrapped around the system's deepest innards. Whenever you hear "what's the big deal?" reach for the scalpel and the hacksaw - if not the chainsaw. Posted by: SocietyIs2Blame at April 13, 2015 02:16 PM (QKIQb) 313

"The next president will appoint as many as four Supreme Court justices, but let's worry more about purity than electability. "
Purity's a misleading argument deployed by the politics as usual crowd. I don't demand Mother Theresa, but you're trying to sell me a hooker. As for Supreme Court justices, when's the last time a President nominated three, much less four? Plus supposed "conservatives" put Souter, Kennedy and Roberts on the Court. There's also more to politics than the Supremes. Electability is an Overton Window set by the Democrat Media Complex. Marry that to any demand for "unity" at all costs and you get the current Congressional majority - a clown car of cowards and double-dealing business as usual elitist shysters. If that's what unity brings, let darkness fall. Another few years on life support as we drift further down the death spiral isn't worth it.
