'The World's Most Dangerous Path' Set to Reopen in Spain

It is known as El Caminito del Rey (the King's little pathway) and was a popular challenge for adventurers until five people lost their lives while taking on the path between 1999 and 2000.

But 14 years after it was closed due to safety fears, the famous walkway - known as the most dangerous in the world - is set to reopen to the public.

The narrow gorge in the province of Malaga, El Caminito del Rey is a precarious walkway that rises over 100 metres (328ft) above the river below.

The trail was built to provide construction workers with access to hydroelectric power plants in Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls between 1901 and 1905.

And it earned its royal name after it was crossed by King Alfonso XIII, who went to attend the opening ceremony of the dam Conde del Guadalhorce in 1921.

It was covered here on the HQ many years ago and yes the path is scary as shit as this video shows.

The Clintons Called the Secret Service 'Pigs'

Chelsea was on the phone with friend when the agent walked in. "Oh, I've got to go," she said. "The pigs are here."

The agent didn't appreciate that, Payne recalled, and tried to explain to Chelsea that he was just doing his job, which was "to stand between you, your family, and a bullet."

Chelsea replied: "Well, that's what my mother and father call you."

At least in Chelsea's defense she was a young girl at the time just aping her parents' behavior, but Hillary truly seems to despise the agents - which is why protection duty for her is considered official punishment:

As detailed in my book "The First Family Detail," Mrs. Clinton is so nasty to Secret Service agents who would lay down their lives for her that being assigned to her detail is considered a form of punishment and the worst assignment in the Secret Service.

"We were basically told, the Clintons don't want to see you, they don't want to hear you, get out of the way," says a former Secret Service agent of the Clintons' White House years. "If Hillary was walking down a hall, you were supposed to hide behind drapes used as partitions. Supervisors would tell us, 'Listen, stand behind this curtain. They're coming,' or 'Just stand out of the way, don't be seen.'"

Agents say Hillary's nastiness and contempt for them, and disdain for law enforcement and the military in general, has continued, both when she was secretary of state and now that she is protected as a former first lady, earning her the distinction of being considered the Secret Service's most detested protectee.

"Hillary would cuss at Secret Service drivers for going over bumps," former agent Jeff Crane says.

"There's not an agent in the service who wants to be in Hillary's detail," a current agent says. "If agents get the nod to go to her detail, that's considered a form of punishment among the agents. She's hard to work around, she's known to snap at agents and yell at agents and dress them down to their faces, and they just have to be humble and say, 'Yes ma'am,' and walk away."

The agent adds, "Agents don't deserve that. They're there to do a job, they're there to protect her, they'll lay their life down for hers, and there's absolutely no respect for that. And that's why agents do not want to go to her detail."

Kevin D. Williamson: Campus Rape and the 'Emergency': It's Always an Excuse for Authoritarianism

We're in the midst of our own contemporary Salem witchcraft hysteria and in a few years it will seem just as insane as the 1980s satanic daycare abuse trials do now.

This is not news, and it wasn't really news 20 years ago, either. There was not an epidemic of musically propelled Satanism in the United States in the 1980s. And there was no shadowy network of occultists infiltrating the nation's daycare centers, either. There was an epidemic of divorce and a great deal of stress as Americans attempted to manage the emergence of what we now euphemistically call "blended families" in unprecedented numbers. The actual face of villainy - absent fathers and neglectful mothers - was too terrible to contemplate. Better we should invent some dramatic fiction with which to comfort ourselves: The social virtue of horror movies is that they are unbelievable, relieving our anxiety rather than heightening it.

...Emergencies are occasions for suspending the usual systems of checks and balances, due process, the transparent and careful consideration of documented evidence, and - notably - for curtailing the rights of the accused. If there really were an epidemic of rape on college campuses, and if college administrations really were guilty of covering that up, then the rational thing to do would be to make colleges "mandatory reporters" - those who are legally obliged to alert the police when they are informed of an alleged sexual assault. (Progressives already are arguing that universities act in loco parentis - one of the defenses of campus speech codes - so this would hardly represent an expansion of their reading of the university's role in the lives of students.) But this is the one thing that the self-identified activists, feminists, and progressives always resist.

The reason for that is that even when American justice miscarries, as it did in the daycare cases, the appeals process generally provides an opportunity for evidence to be properly examined, for all accounts to be heard and evaluated, and for the rights of the accused to be considered. (Generally.) On the other hand, the emotionally driven kangaroo courts run by sundry deans of students - dealing in shame and recrimination rather than evidence and due process - are quite a bit closer to what progressives prefer than the traditional criminal-justice process, with its patriarchic history, its Anglo-American rationalism, its niggling insistence upon the documentation of reality (all of it no doubt rooted in "privilege" of one sort or another) rather than its blind obedience to what members of various elevated victims' groups sometimes refer to as "my truth," as though truth required that qualifier.

OMFG Guns Are Banned From the NRA Convention in Nashville!!!!!!

So claims Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense. But of course as usual they're wrong.

Marines To Upgrade Rifles, Investigate Use Of Hollowpoint Bullets

There were four Geneva conventions and two additional protocols devoted to the humane treatment of civilians, POWs, and wounded or sick soldiers during wartime, but none of them discussed the use of certain kinds of ammunition.

It was instead the Hague Convention of 1899 that included a treaty between signatory nations that they would abstain from using "bullets which expand or flatten easily in the human body." The United States never signed nor agreed to this treaty, and has regularly used small arms ammunition designed to yaw, fragment, flatten, or expand.

The Marines have been using the "open-tip" (hollowpoint) MK318 rifle round in Afghanistan for the last half-decade, and are now looking to adopt it as the general issue round, replacing the under-performing M855 round. If accepted, the existing supplies of Corps M855 will be expended during normal training over the next ten years before the Marines transition fully to the Mk318 round. The Marine Times refers to the MK318 by its less common name (the AB49 Special Operations Science and Technology 5.56mm cartridge) throughout the article, for reasons we have yet to discern.

Perhaps of more interest than the increased acceptance of MK318 (which is an additional development to an old story) is the possible adoption of hollowpoint pistol ammunition by the Marine Corps.

Traditionally, the U.S. military has paid nominal lip-service to the Hague Convention of 1899 and had issued FMJ pistol bullets, with only special operations forces currently using hollowpoint handgun ammunition.

Tales From Those Non-Ideologues at The Nation

Moreover, I'm not even sure why liberals are so determined to deny what is so obvious (though not to them, as I think most are sincere in their dogmatic belief in their own anti-dogmatism). We may believe slavery is bad on empirical grounds, but underneath those grounds lies the bedrock of principle, or yes, ideology. The abolitionists were not motivated primarily by green-eyeshade questions of economic efficiency. If I could prove that in some utilitarian sense that slavery was better for most people, but awful for just a few, I sincerely doubt, and would certainly hope, that liberals would not suddenly change their minds on the question. Alterman claims that liberals don't actually like high taxes. This strikes me as an odd claim, given that so much of contemporary liberalism's argument for higher taxes is suffused with moralizing language about the greed of the wealthy. Even president Obama has admitted that he would favor higher capital gains taxes even if they generated less revenue, out of a bias towards "fairness" not what works.

Bette Claire Graham, She Truly Profited From Her Mistakes

Bette Claire Graham always wanted to be an artist. But after graduation from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas, she became a World War II war bride and then a mother. When her husband came home from the war, they were strangers and divorced. She moved to Dallas and became a secretary at the Texas Bank and Trust to support her and her son. She was promoted to executive secretary, the highest position a woman could attain at the bank at that time.

Then came the electric typewriter, which was her ticket out of the bank.

Correcting errors on an electric typewriter was difficult. Usually a person had to re-type the entire page. She invented a way to white out her mistakes.

...When the other secretaries realized how well the invention worked, they flooded Graham with requests for their own supplies. The now-famous woman inventor sold her first batch of 'Mistake Out' in 1956, and soon she was working full-time to produce and bottle it from her North Dallas home," according to the Famous Women Inventors site.

Eventually she changed the name to Liquid Paper. Her business ran in the red for several years, but she persevered.

Her son, Michael, had helped her in the early days, but he quit high school in 1960 and joined the Air Force....A few years later, she sold her company to Gillette for $47 million.

And aficionados of pop culture will also know who her son is.

77 Secret Service should do the "under-attack-hustle" and literally bum-rush the Hildebeest from Suburban to door to stage to desk, restaurant, doctor's appointment, ad infinitum.

She should be handled like the Samsonite Gorilla handles a suitcase.

They'd be closely protecting her. She would be safe.

She would not be comfortable, neat, tidy or pleased.

Which would make the rest of us, and presumably the Secret Service, very happy indeed.

111 For those that missed it, MWR went on an epic rant regarding snowflakes.

It should be required reading.

So here it is:

"Student reactions have clearly articulated that this is neither the
venue nor the time to show this movie," the statement read. "We deeply
regret causing harm to members of our community, and appreciate the
thoughtful feedback provided to us by students."

WARNING: Prepare for an MWR rant. It will contain profanity. Advertisers, I apologize - I've tried to be good.

The other week I went on something of a rant on Twitter about how I'm sick of these lily-livered little campus snowflakes using the English language to call something violent which is not violence.

This bullshit statement has just exploded my rage meter.

"We deeply regret causing harm to members of our community-"

FUCK THE EVER-LOVING BULLSHIT OUT OF YOU, you worthless slags and pussy-mouthed assclowns. NO ONE has been g-ddamned "harmed" by this SJW weepfest contrived by the oh-so-delicate flowers who have emerged from the fecund shit heap that is Millennial education. GET YOUR FUCKING SHIT TOGETHER, you mewling whorefaced little shitdemons.

You know who WAS harmed? Chris Kyle. That's right, the American hero whose story is portrayed in "American Sniper." Oh, you don't want to call him a hero, you diarrhea-drenched bitch maggots? You want to call him a murderer, or a psychopath, or *GASP!* a white heterosexual male (OH THE HORROR!)? You want to say that the portrayal of Muslims and Arabs in the movie is "negative" and "culturally insensitive" and makes your poor little bladders leak because you feel "unsafe"? Not by the fact that those "culturally insensitive" Muslims and Arabs actually exist, but because - let me try and write this without punching something - because you don't want to be faced with the truth.

You know what? FUCK. YOU.

Chris Kyle went to war. He killed people in that war. You know why? So that those filthy jihadis he killed wouldn't come over here and murder YOU in your g-ddamned dorm rooms, surrounded by your bongs and "HOPE AND CHANGE" signs and free trade bohemian bracelets made by Shaolin nuns, or whatever other bullshit you keep close at hand to make you feel like your lives are worth a tinker's damn. Kyle went to war so that some ululating lunatic wouldn't invade your precious "safe spaces" and saw off your head with a dull knife, spilling your dainty, delicate blood all over your Play-Doh and staining your bedazzled dream journals claret. So that you in your sanctimonious toddler voices could have the OPPORTUNITY to call him a murderer and a psychopath, though if there were any true righteousness in this world every one of you who's dared say such a thing would have your tongues turned to slabs of lead for speaking such filthy lies.

You little shitstains don't know the first thing about REAL pain. You don't know the first thing about ACTUAL suffering. You think you can stand there in your ivory towers of academia and condescend to preach MORALS and VALUES and ETHICS and INCLUSION when you've never permitted anyone to actually school you on what it IS to be moral, or to have values, or to be ethical, or to be - and I'm laughing as I write this - INCLUSIVE.

How DARE you. HOW FUCKING DARE YOU.

You know what I think of weak stomached sperm stains like you?

I don't. I don't think of you at all.

I don't care if I offend you, because from where I stand it sounds like Cream of Wheat and lollipops fucking offends you. I don't think about your precious feelings, because from where I stand, all you ARE are your feelings. You're a raw nerve with no insulation against the brutality of the real world. You never grew the psychological and emotional scar tissue that countless generations before you have had to grow to get along in the world, because everyone's always given in to you pussies and your weak-wristed demands.

I hope to God one of you reads this, and I hope beyond hope that you CRY. I hope you BAWL. I hope you feel like I've personally stepped into your "safe space" and smacked you across the face with a g-ddamn rusty gauntlet. Because I HAVE. I will be in your safe spaces forever, standing too close, hissing in your ear, reminding you that you're truly worthless; that you aren't fit to hold up your head when you're in the presence of REAL people. Because you AREN'T people. You're not even UNpeople. You are porcelain dolls painted with organically sourced pigments and placed on high shelves out of the reach of the clawing children of Real Life. You are too fragile to exist.

Other people should have been teaching you to grow up since the day you were born, but they didn't and you were too lazy and pampered to do it yourself. So sorry-not-sorry, but I'm going to do it now. Welcome to the crash course on life, you simpering little fuckwits.

Lesson #1: No one cares about your fucking feelings.

Lesson #2: If you ever start to doubt Lesson #1, you get the gauntlet again

We need to have it printed onto posters, and staple it to light poles around every college campus.

Hell, Moo can even prove his worth and spend some of his (alleged) wealth, and run it in major cities newspapers as a full page ad.

It needs to be laminated onto a baseball bat, and used to beat the shit out oh so very many faculty at schools, colleges and universities from coast to coast.

And finally, it needs to be pinned to the shirt of Bergdahl as he's tied to the firing squad post.

Oh, one last thought.

President Cruz should read it at his inauguration.

148 That was done. Bill Clinton signed it into law. He was supposed to be the last president to get lifetime SS protection. W and Obama were supposed to be responsible for their own security after 10 years or something. Bush didn't do anything about the new policy. But once President special snowflake got in Congress went and reversed the law and now W and Obama get lifetime SS protection.

I don't have a problem with the lifetime assignment, as a general rule. We don't want, after all, foreign or domestic nutjobs taking out former WH occupants, like we're India or Pakistan.

But there should be an opt-out clause. Abuse these people, and we WILL rescind the offer to keep you safe.

We have the ability to protect former First Ladies. We don't have the obligation to subject American citizens and federal workers to being treated like slaves though.

At one time his skating empire extended into Canada, Mexico, Australia and Japan, and he was credited for bringing sex appeal and soap opera plots to the banked track.

234 Say that again, please.

Yes, tell me why you don't care much about the flag, please?

1. Because it's a symbol of Federal unity, and doesn't have anything much to do with the Constitution.

2. Because it's not really my flag. I was born under the Union Jack.

3. Because flag-burning is political speech. It's certainly not comparable to people-burning (which is the contrast I was trying to make).

#1 is probably the best reason. If you think states' divorce from the Federal Empire is the best option - as I've increasingly come to think - then the flag needs to lose a star or two. At least.

237 Hey everybody.

Okay, jobs. Got to my first interview a few minutes late because of unforeseen freeway traffic, so I tried to call the person I was supposed to meet. Wouldn't you know it, she was on some phone calls anyway... so if I hadn't left her a message apologizing for being late, she never would have known. On top of that... I actually interviewed *along with* another candidate, which was weird.

So then I had to use the boy's room, but the building where the first interview was... well, didn't want to use the restrooms there. OCD, you know. I knew that my next interview was in a beautiful office tower though, just a few minutes away.

So I get there... and it's in a multi-building series of towers, and I can't find #5. Finally I noticed a #5 that had a *different name* than the rest of the office complex. And, they had the good ol' paid parking garage. But I still had some time (about 40 minutes 'til 2pm, my interview time) so I went in, got my stuff, and started trudging down this kinda looong concrete walkway, which passed through an artificial lake, to the building lobby.

Well, I guess I musta missed the giant "WATCH YOUR STEP!!" sign because the walkway had a step down to the concrete right ahead of the lobby doors. I took that extra six-inch drop hard on my right foot, darted like Bruce Jenner '76 for about five feet, and then landed right on my chin. Thank God, some people (including a very nice, large-sized black man) asked me if I was okay, and helped me up. I had some pain and scraped my knee as well, but nothing horrific; mostly I was just pretty embarrassed.

So I go to the super high-tech screen in the lobby that says "touch for directory." I touch it. Nothing. I touch it again, harder. Still nothing. Sigh. But they said they were on the 8th floor. Decided if this wasn't the right building, I could call this second company and explain my predicament. In the meantime, I get to the elevators which took me to the 8th floor fairly quickly, and THANK GOD, there was a sign right across from the elevators indicating the office I was looking for was indeed there.

So now I have to find the restroom and my... body is losing patience with me. Found it, went, used the toilet (thankfully, nice and flushed and clean) and then get in front of the mirror and discovered: I had ripped the pocked of my dress shirt, *and* I had a nice bloody shiner on my lower chin. I also landed a bit on my jaw and front teeth, which still ache a tiny bit.

But, I was right on time for this interview. Literally 5 minutes early. So I got in and met a nice young woman who explained that the job is basically the care, feeding and burping of a CEO who wants everyone to let him know everything without ever having to read his email, answer his phone, or talk to anybody any more than he absolutely has to. SIGH.

Oh well. Still have a shot at both jobs IMHO. I *think* I did okay and avoided talking too much, while still passing on good info, at both interviews. I explained my shiner to the second interviewette, who seemed to understand. And after the second office gave me literally a *stack* of credits for their parking garage, I still had to pay $2.50 for parking. Oh well, not bad. The original price was something like $6.75.

Life, life, life... ;-)

Okay, fine, except that I'm already a bit tired of filling in online applications. I'll do it and go to the agency of course, but not sure if I want to get as dressed up as I usually do.

And the second job? They want me to do a 'research assignment' and said they would e-mail it to me. They're an investment firm and they told me a lot of my job will be researching new up-and-coming companies to see if their stocks are purchase-worthy. Been six hours, no e-mail from them yet. Will call them again tomorrow, I guess.

Still, they both promised quick results once they get their info. The first said "ASAP," the second said that if they were happy with my homework, I'd hear back in a week. Okay.

I'm not going to argue with you. If you don't understand, you don't understand.

However, I was in a museum recently. On a wall was a large flag of Texas, which had flown during the Civil War. Now, I'm not from Texas, and if you must know I would have been on the other side during that war, but the flag clearly meant something very important to the people who rallied around it, fought and died for it. I can respect that, and honor those who feel it deeply. Whether I feel the same as they is entirely irrelevant.

Many of us here feel that way about the American flag. And frankly I don't give a damn about whether YOU think American Soldiers Sailors and Marines fought and died, not for the rest of the damn world, but for THIS country, which is what the flag stands for.

I am not a government agent.

Burn the flag in my presence, and you will also find you have the right to face me in unarmed combat. I don't lose many fights.

And yes, afterwards, government agents will come and arrest and try me for assault. I'm cool with that. I'll be getting out of jail right about the time Mr. Protectedpoliticalspeech is eating solid food again. I consider that a fair trade.

299 Just wanted to throw this out there, in light of the whole Russian hacking situation.

"Russia is our #1 geopolitical foe." -Romney

He wasn't saying they were our most dangerous enemy. He wasn't saying they were our financial enemy, which he attributed to China. He was talking about the seedy, under the radar, manipulations that would take place by the Russian state or the higher ups within the country itself.

And, here we are.

This not a cafeteria thing, as much as many would like to believe that it should be. Our Constitution, rights and symbols are all treated as if we were born with them.

They are interconnected. DO NOT try and separate them as a basis for any argument you choose to make. Ever

Darlin' you're thinking too small.

1) I throw the life preserver to Barack. I think it would be interesting to see if he is selfless enough to save his wife, or if he saves himself with no hesitation whatsoever. It would be a very interesting sociological experiment.

2) If Barack were to perish, it would only grow his historic legend. He would be breathed in the same breath as others. "Lincoln, Kennedy, Obama" as presidents dying before their time. Do we really want him to go down as some sort of legend versus what he really should be known as: a failed president?

I didn't mean to suggest that we should encourage such attacks. And yes, I realize there would be innocents there, I'd never wish for that, but if it had to occur, would prefer it to be there.
That's the problem with conservatives. Our consciences will be the undoing of us. As a matter of fact, Obama's "deal" is a version of what you stated. The left doesn't seem to have a conscience anymore. And that's only a conclusion I've come to after many years of being shocked and bewildered by their actions.

I absolutely think the cop overstepped his bounds, and it is absolutely awful. I think he should be removed from the force without question.

However, I agree with Jesse Watters, er he agrees with me, I mean. It's awful, but I just don't think it is racial. I don't think the cop stood there and said, "This guy is black, I'm pulling the trigger." I think if a white guy would have ran, the cop (wrongly I might add) would have responded the same way.

I watched the video. Bad shoot, plus the cherry on top of tampering with evidence.

If I'm on the jury, cop gets LWOP. Agents of the state have a *higher* degree of liability (that's not the exact right word, but whatever) when it comes to use of deadly force.

For those saying no premeditation, I say that pointing a gun a someone and squeezing the trigger *is* premeditation. What did you think was going to come out of the barrel? A little BANG flag?

I will, of course, change my mind if new, exculpatory evidence comes out. But the fact that cop was indicted for murder tells me that's not likely.

Bad shoot.

362 "take out military targets first."

Which goes to the adage: "........professionals discuss logistics."

Had the 9/11 terrorists crashed those same four planes into well-selected areas along the Houston Ship Channel and Texas City, we'd still be paying $12 to $20 per gallon for gas.

If and when you could find some, that is.

And the chemical precursors vital to nearly every phase of manufacturing? Gone, for years.

Farming would take a massive hit, too.

Our great military would have quickly burned through whatever the politicians had allowed to remain in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, too.

We might have at least got some emergency legislation, handcuffing the EPA and courts so new refineries could be built in something less than 30 years.

Might. Have.

Oh, and Long Beach is still a major target, even though the Naval Shipyard is long gone. Busiest container port in the U.S., you think they're not gonna prioritize it as a target?

I forgot what Great Lakes ports were the keys to the Iron Ore industry, but you can dambetcha they're on the list, too.

We can only hope that any attacker is stupid enough to think only of tactics and strategy.

After all, the Japanese failed to hit the fuel oil tanks and dry docks at Pearl Harbor. Had they taken those out, we'd have never got back on our feet in time to turn the tide in the Pacific.

390 The thing to me that is crazy about the whole Walter Scott situation is that the outrage (thus far) seems relatively muted.

I mean in this case, there is video evidence. There is tampering with the crime scene, planting a weapon, all that. Still, it has not dominated the news cycle.

With Mike Brown, there was NO video. Witnesses supported the cop's version of events. The grand jury and State department ruled in favor of the police. And yet, people were still protesting and rioting and all that.

Something is screwy here.

You sound like their lunatic fringe. You sound like Ayers and Dorhn.

I don't like progressive ideology. I think it's highly destructive to society. But I cannot condone the rank and file people who hold those views dying simply because I don't agree with them politically. We decry that when it comes from their side. It's one tactic we do not need to emulate.

The song was a big enough hit that ABC decided to produce a weekly series featuring the group that performed it, Starland Vocal Band. I don't know what his record on the police force was. I suppose that will come out eventually. Was he a bad cop or a good cop who fucked up?

My guess is an adrenaline rush after the chase and struggle. Which is no excuse. Someone lacking self-control probably shouldn't be a cop.

If I caught someone breaking into my house, he turned and fled, and I pumped eight rounds into his back as he was running down the driveway, I would go to prison, and "adrenaline" would not be accepted as an excuse.

HOWEVER, the truly damning part was when he dropped the taser next to the dying man. I have heard many, many stories about cops planting drugs on a suspect to justify an arrest, or a weapon to justify a shooting. To see it actually caught live on video is pretty sobering, and suggests that it happens more often than we would like to think.

435 Captain, Letterman was great (and still can be great) when he tries to be creative, and *stays the fuck away* from politics.

BTW, I've read that Carson was so powerful at NBC by 1982, he had approval of what show followed him. So when the network premiered Letterman's original "Late Night," Johnny's people had a bunch of conditions to make sure it was different enough from the Tonight Show that it supposedly wouldn't rival his own popularity. Included in which, Dave was ordered to always *avoid* politics in his monologue and sketches.

But then DL got total freedom with "Late Show" in 1993, and decided to go whole-hog.

Sure, go for coffee, no pressure.

But make sure you actually say the words "I would like to take you out for a date". Or something similar.

Don't think she's gonna pick up on your clues. You have to make your intentions very much explicit. Otherwise, when she is ready to date again, you might all of a sudden be in the Friend Zone.

Also, did he really think he could outrun a cop? And even if he could, the police could just run his plates and show up at his house.

Again, I want to re-iterate, I don't think this is a race thing. I think anyone that is stopped, for a broken taillight, speeding, seat belt violations, whatever- whether white, black, brown, or purple- if they 100% have nothing whatsoever to hide, they aren't going to run.

Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Dr. Good

Gypsies, tramps and thieves
We'd hear it from the people of the town, they'd call us
Gypsies, tramps and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
and lay their money down

Picked up a boy just out of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
I was 16, he was 21
Rode with us to Memphis
and Papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done

Gypsies, tramps and thieves
We'd hear it from the people of the town, they'd call us
Gypsies, tramps and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
and lay their money down

I never had schooling, but he taught me well
with his smooth Southern style
Three months later I'm a gal in trouble
and I haven't seen him for a while
I haven't seen him for a while

She was born in the wagon of a traveling show

"This is a Country, .."

That was operative in 2000-2003. By 2009, it should read:

"This was a Country.."

It was a great one. But it has had a coronary and it's been flatlined for 7 years now.

We'd like it to be like it was. It'd be nice if we were again a Country, a Nation.

But that's not likely. Face facts, our society such as it is, is fractured. One side - the urban leftist side - considers the other side as subhuman un-citizens. THe other side considers the leftist as horribly wrong and misguided.

There can be no reconciliation without great societal strain up to and including civil war. It has gone too far, but that's just my opinion.

My uncle called it 'invidious comparison' but I know that term is usually applied to asshole economics via Thorstein Veblen.

My uncle's point was that 'invidious' means something issued out of jealousy. Invidious comparison is the normal mode of a 5-year-old being caught punching his sibling and exclaiming, "He did it first!"

No perceived bad behavior can be used to justified another's bad behavior.

590 Apropos of nothing, I did a rough pass through the fiancee's taxes a couple of days ago and gave her a "to-do" list, some of which involved stock basis from the 90's.

She looked in a couple of places, and gave me a huge box of unsorted crap, and said she needed to look in "the book room" and the garage. ["The book room" is stacked floor-to-ceiling with books, quilt fabric, spare artwork, musical instruments, and other bric-a-brac.]

So I spent a large part of the day moving stuff so she'd be able to access the far corners of "the book room" and the garage. And when she got home, she acted like I'd shot her dog.

I mean, we'd discussed that she needed to go through these places and that it would involve a lot of moving stuff.....

Green Acres, too.

Posted by: rickl at April 09, 2015 02:32 AM (sdi6R)

639 Yeah, I did consider Doctor Who--that would certainly be plenty of material. I think if you were in the SFF mood and wanted just the shows that would give you the longest runtime, it would have to be Doctor Who, Supernatural, Smallville, SG-1, annnd... SGA, maybe? Not sure what the fifth-longest is.

Posted by: Elisabeth G. Wolfe at April 09, 2015 02:32 AM (iuQS7)

640 Green Acres could often times be almost as weird as Twin Peaks, as I recall.

I would have to choose The Beverly Hillbillies over Green Acres.

Posted by: Soothsayer, Inc. -- The King Unwilling est. 2005 at April 09, 2015 02:35 AM (YerQG)

642 Green Acres was almost a proto-Monty Python in its sense of the absurd.

Everything went into syndication -- which lead to a large transfer of audience to second-tier stations. The big three networks didn't care, however, because their focus had shifted to indoctrinating youth [AKA "demographics"]. I'm sure 50 years from now, Mila Kunis will most likely be making most of her money producing movies rather than starring in them, and that when she does act, she'll most likely be in a supporting role as someone's cute-ish grandma or the like. I thought they cd have helped Margaux but they didnt. I remember everyone saying how well she was doing after she was dead but that was a lie. She couldnt pay her rent, was being evicted, and committed suicide. No one found her body for a few days and the scene was ghastly. I wonder where her money went? You wd think her family wd have set her up with a trust so she wdnt have problems paying her rent/utilities.

752 I had a huge crush on Brigitte Bardot when I was a teenager, even though she was about 40 at the time.

She wasn't 40 in this photo, though, which was very...inspiring:

(I saw that before I saw the famous Farrah Fawcett poster, so I was rather spoiled, shall we say.)

Here's what she looks like today:

She's in her 80s now. What do you expect?

Anyway, she's still feisty. She's constantly getting in trouble with the law for complaining about the Muslim invasion of France. Hate speech and such. So I still love her.

763 Something for everyone to ponder.

Banks are now "paying" negative interest on accounts. The Fed has for quite a while paid practically nothing on the interest on it's bonds.

Yet they have people lining up to buy these products.

There's a few reasons for that and the majority don't bode well.

1) they're so rich and so wealthy they're willing to PAY for somewhere to park their money where it's relatively safe.
2) there's nothing else to invest in. Which means regardless of how well the stock markets doing, companies aren't expanding. (or at least not in the Western countries.)
3) the cost of using any other means to park their money is more expensive or risky. (and that should give everyone pause for thought.)
4) They expect the Fed to protect those assets better than actual property as an investment.

Not a good prospectus. The Swiss are now selling THEIR debt at a NEGATIVE INTEREST rate.

One has to ask oneself the question: what do they know that we don't?

There's far more....

If you have occasional stock purchases and sales, you may have noted that the brokerage firms are reporting metric fucktons of data about your sales, and the Schedule D reporting requirements have become nightmarishly complicated. Occam's razor would have the government taking an entirely unhealthy interest in untaxed appreciation in your portfolio.

In addition, several brokerage accounts have berated me for not doing sufficient trading with my cash position, and converted them to "FDIC-protected" accounts. The FDIC is out of money and the next big lurch is going to leave it with a ton of liabilities -- it doesn't take a big stretch to figure that "FDIC-protected" accounts will soon become "FDIC-funding" accounts.

It is well worth the time to study "The Bank War" -- the struggle between Andrew Jackson and the 2nd National Bank of the United States. In particular, note AJ's bank veto speech -- http://tinyurl.com/9hmony -- and its very strong concluding remarks:

"It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the
acts of government to their selfish purposes. Distinctions in society
will always exist under every just government. Equality of talents, of
education, or of wealth can not be produced by human institutions. In
the full enjoyment of the gifts of Heaven and the fruits of superior
industry, economy, and virtue, every man is equally entitled to
protection by law; but when the laws undertake to add to these natural
and just advantages artificial distinctions, to grant titles,
gratuities, and exclusive privileges, to make the rich richer and the
potent more powerful, the humble members of society-the farmers,
mechanics, and laborers-who have neither the time nor the means of
securing like favors to themselves, have a right to complain of the
injustice of their Government. There are no necessary evils in
government. Its evils exist only in its abuses. If it would confine
itself to equal protection, and, as Heaven does its rains, shower its
favors alike on the high and the low, the rich and the poor, it would be
an unqualified blessing. In the act before me there seems to be a wide
and unnecessary departure from these just principles.

Nor is our Government to be maintained or our Union preserved by
invasions of the rights and powers of the several States. In thus
attempting to make our General Government strong we make it weak. Its
true strength consists in leaving individuals and States as much as
possible to themselves-in making itself felt, not in its power, but in
its beneficence; not in its control, but in its protection; not in
binding the States more closely to the center, but leaving each to move
unobstructed in its proper orbit.

Experience should teach us wisdom. Most of the difficulties our
Government now encounters and most of the dangers which impend over our
Union have sprung from an abandonment of the legitimate objects of
Government by our national legislation, and the adoption of such
principles as are embodied in this act. Many of our rich men have not
been content with equal protection and equal benefits, but have besought
us to make them richer by act of Congress. By attempting to gratify
their desires we have in the results of our legislation arrayed section
against section, interest against interest, and man against man, in a
fearful commotion which threatens to shake the foundations of our Union.
It is time to pause in our career to review our principles, and if
possible revive that devoted patriotism and spirit of compromise which
distinguished the sages of the Revolution and the fathers of our Union.
If we can not at once, in justice to interests vested under improvident
legislation, make our Government what it ought to be, we can at least
take a stand against all new grants of monopolies and exclusive
privileges, against any prostitution of our Government to the
advancement of the few at the expense of the many, and in favor of
compromise and gradual reform in our code of laws and system of
political economy.

I have now done my duty to my country. If sustained by my fellow
citizens, I shall be grateful and happy; if not, I shall find in the
motives which impel me ample grounds for contentment and peace. In the
difficulties which surround us and the dangers which threaten our
institutions there is cause for neither dismay nor alarm. For relief and
deliverance let us firmly rely on that kind Providence which I am sure
watches with peculiar care over the destinies of our Republic, and on
the intelligence and wisdom of our countrymen. Through His abundant
goodness and heir patriotic devotion our liberty and Union will be
preserved."

770 The underlying criticism of a national bank is that all citizens of the nation become debtors to it. It owns their mortgages, student loans, paycheck advance loans, auto loans.....and every citizen that has such loans has to work X to buy the house, earn a degree, pay the bills, get the car -- plus a little bit more to pay the interest.

Anyway, a guy posted ... somewhere, said he lived in Nevada and belonged to a 12 Step group (at which point my jaw hit the keyboard because, anonymity, yo) that had hourly meetings on New Year's Eve. According to him, a guy showed up drunk, disheveled and disruptive around 10 pm. The guy, who called himself Larry, was taken outside by several members so as not to disturb the meeting, whereupon he ranted he had just had a serious physical fight with a family member and was afraid that the Secret Service would now be after him. The end.

May be bullshit, may be not. Who knows? But it certainly has a surface plausibility to it.

Things get really bad when it gets involved with government.....if the central bank goes "going further into debt is pleasant", then people might just buy new cars. If the CB decides to try some "interest is painful", people might default on their car loans and end up with a bunch of cars nobody wants.

If the CB is involved with government, however, it can have them buy up a bunch of cars in a "cash for clunkers" program and thin out private sales to where repos can be resold at a profit.

I no longer trust the goverment that is flooding the markets with fiat money to have my best interests at heart. In fact I see they are actively plotting to eliminate the middle class by flooding the country with unskilled labor and in other instances with H1B temporary labor in technical fields.

As a good friend of mine once stated, "Strap in boys and girls, here's where the ride gets a bit bumpy." Insolvency occurring in the banking system is ugly and a crapton of people are going to lose their asses when it goes tits up.
