Rand Paul: I'll Answer Your Wedge-Issue Question About Abortion, The Moment You Ask Debbie Wasserman-Schultz if It's Okay to "Kill a Seven-Pound Baby That Isn't Born Yet"
When quizzed on his about his views on abortion, Republican Kentucky Senator Rand Paul avoided the gotcha game and told NH1 reporter Paul Steinhauser to ask DNC head Debbie Wasserman Schultz if it was okay to "kill a 7-pound baby in the uterus." "Why don't we ask the DNC: Is it okay to kill a 7 pound baby in the uterus?" Paul reportedly said. "You go back and you ask Debbie Wasserman Schultz if she's okay with killing a seven pound baby that is not born yet. Ask her when life begins, and you ask Debbie when it's okay to protect life. When you get an answer from Debbie, get back to me."I was just writing about the need to do this, after the press could not stop talking about Scott Walker's non-answer on evolution. Both parties, I noted, have unpopular, niche, even weird stuff in their agendas, because they both seek the support of fringe groups. And when I say "fringe," I do not mean it, as it is typically meant, in a derogatory way; I mean simply that these are groups whose preferred politics are not reflected in the existing politics. They are Out Groups. They have failed to convince the Insiders to make their preferences policies (so far). They have political agendas that do not match up with the mainstream; that is, in fact, why their political agendas are political agendas and not political facts -- why they have to ask for a policy, rather than already having their preferred policy in place.
Anyway, this piece discussed "men" -- women to men transsexuals -- who were complaining that abortion rights were discussed as a women's issue, when in fact, they asserted, many "men," such as themselves, could also get pregnant. So they want abortion crusaders to say head-scratching things like any woman, or any man, who gets pregnant has the right to an abortion. I noted then that the right media talks about such strange and florid agenda items on the left, but the Democrat-controlled media, of course, never does. They want to discuss endlessly our odder-sounding or more "extreme" fringe demands; but they absolutely refuse to discuss the Democrats' oddest-sounding and most extreme fringe demands.
I think Rand Paul did a smart thing here. He's not my guy, but he definitely did something smart. This should be the standard answer to any media question about the fringier parts of the Republican coalition: I will answer your question the very moment you ask the Democrats about this analogous fringe demand of the Democrat Party. Come back to me with an answer, and I'll answer your question. Oh, and caveat: If you ask the Democrat the question in an obligatory manner, and don't bother to ask the obvious follow-up questions to get past the first answer (which is always a hot ball of stinky gas), then that's the exact sort of answer I'll give you, refusing to answer the follow-up questions you wish to ask me but not your Beloved Democrat Politician. Update: Who's "Extreme" Here?
I was discussing this a few weeks ago with someone (forget who), in the context of the media's great interest in Scott Walker's views on evolution. I pointed out that the media, if it really cares so much about evolution, could ask Keith Ellison about it; I don't know his actual views, but I know Muslims generally do not believe in evolution. I also pointed out that, if the media really cared about candidates' views on religious doctrine, they could ask supposedly-Christian Democrats like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton if they really believed Christ died for our sins. Obviously, a Christian should have no problem answering this in the affirmative. But a "Yes" answer from Hillary Clinton would be very problematic among her caucus, wouldn't it? (From what I can gather, Clinton really is a Christian, or at least bothers to go to church occasionally; still, the answer would be very embarrassing and difficult for her politically). So if the media just wants to "find out what candidates" think, why not questions like that? Anyway, the person I was talking to suggested a similar such question which would be very, very #Problematic for Hillary or Obama to answer: How many Sexes are there? See, the problem is, most Democrats are not batshit crazy Gender Warriors who believe the answer is three or seven or 3 pi -- some number greater than 2, in any event. Most Democrats, and all independents, think the answer is "2," and would think anyone thinking the answer is anything but 2 is a crazyperson. But the incredibly militant sexual left is insistent that there are many genders. So such a question is difficult for a Democrat to answer. It's a politically relevant question, given the changes in the law and the claims (probably right) that the "Trans" sexuality issue is going to be "the next civil rights issue," as many on the left predict, but the media will not ask the question, precisely because no answer is a good answer for a Democrat, and any answer will tend to alienate either the extreme militant sexual-left base, or the moderates needed to win elections. They love asking exactly that sort of question of Republicans -- the evolution question is designed to force Republicans to choose between their Biblical literalist supporters and their less literalist supporters -- but they absolutely refuse to ask Democrats designed to produce the same sort of cleavage in their fragile coalition. So, any one out there who likes putting microphones in front of politician's faces: Ask Democrats how many genders their are. Let's start making these Wedge Issue/Gaffe controversies ourselves for the Democrats, given that the DNC owned-and-operated media will not oblige us.

Step one: State your position, honestly and politely.
Step two: Get smeared as a racist, misogynist, hater.
Step three: Call the media liars to their faces, and then repeat (that is: directly quote) exactly what you said before.
Steps 2 & 3 repeat for quite a while, but eventually the message gets through.
And then you get things like major advertisers pulling away from online magazines. Or sweeping the Hugo nominations.

I don't support raising the minimum wage, I support having the government steal less of it from the people. But for that to happen, the government must be made to waste less money.
The most wasteful thing we do? Pay interest on the national debt. $213 billion in 2014. That is DOUBLE the current education budget. It will be $799 billion in 2024.
So I would very much like to spend more money. But to do that I have to first balance the budget, so we stop pissing away more and more money on stupid things like interest. hell, we don't even have to pay back the principal - just stop borrowing more and more each year.
So, ask democrats - do you support education? If yes, then you support a balanced budget.

The story goes on to say "Exceptions in any abortion ban are a politically sensitive topic for Paul and some of his rivals. They want to nudge the party away from a focus on such social issues, but know that winning the nomination requires some backing from religious conservatives who press for strict, if not absolute limits on abortion."
So basically he's specifically *calling the press out* on this, and they're spinning it as an attempt to hide his true beliefs from the voters. Meanwhile, as you note, there are never stories implying that Democrats try to hide some of THEIR views from the voters.

Why? And why is this the perfect response? For the most part, most republican politicians can answer abortion questions just fine - when they actually engage. But every so often, you get an Akin answer. And there will be more who answer like him in the future.
Its way to early to tell whether this is a good way to respond or not.
I just like that he is engaging on the issue - even if in a passive way here.
It is simply not an issue the GOP should run from. If we don't have majority support, the abortion issue is moving in the GOP's favor in that its support is lessening or weakening in this country. We are not the extreme party on this issue.

BUT, as I have gotten older and perhaps a bit wiser I am now to the point of anti-abortion because I do think that social issues are at the backbone and nature of not only society but of our existence as free and independent individuals, whose identity comes from G-d and G-d alone.
This is why I don't dismiss values voters, because values are at the heart of America. It all comes from that.

I was at the book signing for "Liberty and Tyranny" just over 3 years ago now and stood with a very nice guy. He was pro-life even in the case of rape or incest (a position I disagree on, though I am anti-abortion in almost all cases) and he argued his position so rationally and calmly and eloquently it was hard to fault him and in fact, I was nodding my head more than not.

I am pretty sure C-Sections have been around for a long time. I believe Shakespeare wrote in MacBeth that McDuff was born by C-Section and that is why he could could kill MacBeth in spite of the promise of the witches.
As for why they are used so often, I can only speak from personal experience.My wife had our first the regular way and had a very difficult delivery both her and our child. After that, her doctor recommened C-section for the others.

This was the discussion I had with the absolutist pro-life guy - no matter how the child was conceived, it's alive and through no fault of its own.

For most it would be intellectually dishonest to not think this. That doesn't mean it isn't worth the compromise. I'd take the compromise and then go back for this piece. But I think when this country finally does eliminate abortion - it will be done because an overwhelming majority will wish to eliminate it - there will not even be a need for a rape exception.

I agree with the absolutist pro-life position in all cases.
But we also live in a society that does not do that, and is resistant to it. The compromise is suggested as a camel's nose, to force the abortion advocates to recognize that it does indeed infringe on someone's right to life to allow abortion in the case of rape. Surely they don't value a rapist's life more than an innocent child. (they do)
You may find even the mere description of such a compromise as monstrous, but as a political measure it is similar to counting a slave as 3/5 of a person for political representation.

Of course anyone who watched the video can see plainly he didn't loose his cooln not at all, in fact he seem to mildly enjoy having the opportunity to throw that back at the reporter.
The press is going to eventually paint all of them as the devil anyway, the only question is the timing, might as well cut them off at the knees when you can, and if that means they throw a tantrum so be it. Just keep at it, expose the hypocrisy every so often, they'll either get the hint and stop it, ask the question of the others, or just focus on trying to destroying you which they were eventually going to try to do anyway.

Many of them do, and even those that don't relish in it like we might many can at least appreciate the occasional calling push back of calling bullsh1t on a reporter or a gaggle gathered at a presser. You just can't do this with every question, then it can look like or easily be painted that your avoiding the topics instead of just pushing back over well covered or unnecessary ground. This was a good one to do it on, there are and will be plenty of others. He should keep at it as should every other candidate who is or is about to run.

I agree. You have to meet people where they are. What has insisting on the absolutist position done for the pro life movement since Roe v Wade? Start with the stuff most Americans can agree with, like partial birth abortions, limits on abortions and that will save a lot of babies. Not all, but more than are being saved right now.
