Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Rand Paul: I'll Answer Your Wedge-Issue Question About Abortion, The Moment You Ask Debbie Wasserman-Schultz if It's Okay to "Kill a Seven-Pound Baby That Isn't Born Yet"When quizzed on his about his views on abortion, Republican Kentucky Senator Rand Paul avoided the gotcha game and told NH1 reporter Paul Steinhauser to ask DNC head Debbie Wasserman Schultz if it was okay to "kill a 7-pound baby in the uterus." "Why don't we ask the DNC: Is it okay to kill a 7 pound baby in the uterus?" Paul reportedly said. "You go back and you ask Debbie Wasserman Schultz if she's okay with killing a seven pound baby that is not born yet. Ask her when life begins, and you ask Debbie when it's okay to protect life. When you get an answer from Debbie, get back to me."I was just writing about the need to do this, after the press could not stop talking about Scott Walker's non-answer on evolution. Both parties, I noted, have unpopular, niche, even weird stuff in their agendas, because they both seek the support of fringe groups. And when I say "fringe," I do not mean it, as it is typically meant, in a derogatory way; I mean simply that these are groups whose preferred politics are not reflected in the existing politics. They are Out Groups. They have failed to convince the Insiders to make their preferences policies (so far). They have political agendas that do not match up with the mainstream; that is, in fact, why their political agendas are political agendas and not political facts -- why they have to ask for a policy, rather than already having their preferred policy in place. Anyway, this piece discussed "men" -- women to men transsexuals -- who were complaining that abortion rights were discussed as a women's issue, when in fact, they asserted, many "men," such as themselves, could also get pregnant. So they want abortion crusaders to say head-scratching things like any woman, or any man, who gets pregnant has the right to an abortion. I noted then that the right media talks about such strange and florid agenda items on the left, but the Democrat-controlled media, of course, never does. They want to discuss endlessly our odder-sounding or more "extreme" fringe demands; but they absolutely refuse to discuss the Democrats' oddest-sounding and most extreme fringe demands. I think Rand Paul did a smart thing here. He's not my guy, but he definitely did something smart. This should be the standard answer to any media question about the fringier parts of the Republican coalition: I will answer your question the very moment you ask the Democrats about this analogous fringe demand of the Democrat Party. Come back to me with an answer, and I'll answer your question. Oh, and caveat: If you ask the Democrat the question in an obligatory manner, and don't bother to ask the obvious follow-up questions to get past the first answer (which is always a hot ball of stinky gas), then that's the exact sort of answer I'll give you, refusing to answer the follow-up questions you wish to ask me but not your Beloved Democrat Politician. Update: Who's "Extreme" Here?
Update: Rand Gets Results.

Awesome. As an aside, a great thing to ask Dems about right now is how they feel about Kansas banning dismemberment abortions.
Oh they'll say "we oppose banning the very common D&E procedure" at which point you say "So, to be clear, you think that it should be legal to tear a viable child apart limb by limb inside the womb?" Posted by: Lauren at April 08, 2015 04:07 PM (MYCIw) 5

When the AP reporter pressed Paul on whether women who have been raped should be able to have an abortion, the senator became annoyed. "I gave you about a five-minute answer," Paul said. When pressed for the actual answer (getting something insane out of the Dems)
"I have no problem with allowing the woman to choose a permanent physical, medical, and legal separation from the fetus. But the fetus is alive, and has rights of its own. When phrased that way, the woman's right to choose results in an early delivery. The resulting baby may not survive, but at the very least we've moved off of the aggravated first degree murder down to death by misadventure. Surely you'd like fewer murders?" First the facts (Martin, Brown) won't fit the narrative, now when the facts do, the reaction of Conservatives doesn't. The SJWs just can't win for losing. I'm not sure if they're actually incapable of realizing that we are rational people who are able to consider evidence and come to conclusions on a case-by-case basis, or if they're just so committed to the idea that "Conservative = evil" that they think it's okay to smear a large swath of the nation. Key was in the WAY he answered...
The Republican candidate cannot allow the Media to control the narrative... If they do, they will lose. He was also 'testy' (according to MSN) on another interview, where the NBC questioner told HIM what he had said, then framed the question as a got ya... He told her to stop editorializing and he would answer... once she actually asked him a question.... There are three things which are HUGELY unpopular in the US... The Government in General, Washington in Particular... AND the MEDIA.... That fact is open to exploitation.... as we have seen from both #gamersgate and sad puppies... He accused Guthrie of editorializing after she raised a question about whether he had "mellowed" as a senator given different statements he's made on a range of issues. "Why don't we let me explain instead of talking over me, OK?" Paul told Guthrie when pressed about his previous statements. "Before we go through a litany of things you say I've changed on, why don't you ask me a question, 'Have I changed my opinion?' That would be sort of a better way to approach an interview." Been saying this for some time. Push back against the media. Make them squirm. Make them defensive and expose their agenda BS for what it is. Make an issue of the question and not the answer. ======== They'll pull the "We'll ask them when we interview them. But, we're interviewing you right now." You have to be prepared to say, "No, this has been an issue for years--you've had more than enough time to ask them about that. You won't ask them. Ever. And that's why you'll get an answer from me when you get an answer from them first." Let 'em. No one is going to give a f*ck. Seriously, if SP(1, 2, & 3) and Gamergate have taught us nothing else, it's that LIVs *will* actually listen to the truth. You wouldn't know it from the gaming media (which Gamergate has largely written off), but GG won some major strategic victories with advertisers. And Sad Puppies is basically a case-study in how to fight back against this kind of crap. Step one: State your position, honestly and politely. Step two: Get smeared as a racist, misogynist, hater. Step three: Call the media liars to their faces, and then repeat (that is: directly quote) exactly what you said before. Steps 2 & 3 repeat for quite a while, but eventually the message gets through. And then you get things like major advertisers pulling away from online magazines. Or sweeping the Hugo nominations. I don't support raising the minimum wage, I support having the government steal less of it from the people. But for that to happen, the government must be made to waste less money. The most wasteful thing we do? Pay interest on the national debt. $213 billion in 2014. That is DOUBLE the current education budget. It will be $799 billion in 2024. So I would very much like to spend more money. But to do that I have to first balance the budget, so we stop pissing away more and more money on stupid things like interest. hell, we don't even have to pay back the principal - just stop borrowing more and more each year. So, ask democrats - do you support education? If yes, then you support a balanced budget. Posted by: Dr. McCoy at April 08, 2015 04:42 PM (/EkKm) 218

What's really risible about this, Ace, is the way it's being spun in the press. I work for a newspaper, and the AP wire is currently running stories characterizing this as an attempt to by Paul to dodge the question in order to avoid offending pro-lifers.
It's right here in the first sentence of this story: "Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a newly declared Republican presidential candidate, is dodging a central question about abortion." The story goes on to say "Exceptions in any abortion ban are a politically sensitive topic for Paul and some of his rivals. They want to nudge the party away from a focus on such social issues, but know that winning the nomination requires some backing from religious conservatives who press for strict, if not absolute limits on abortion." So basically he's specifically *calling the press out* on this, and they're spinning it as an attempt to hide his true beliefs from the voters. Meanwhile, as you note, there are never stories implying that Democrats try to hide some of THEIR views from the voters. Unbelievable. Posted by: Ex-liberal at April 08, 2015 04:47 PM (R1mDg) 243

----- Why? And why is this the perfect response? For the most part, most republican politicians can answer abortion questions just fine - when they actually engage. But every so often, you get an Akin answer. And there will be more who answer like him in the future. Its way to early to tell whether this is a good way to respond or not. I just like that he is engaging on the issue - even if in a passive way here. It is simply not an issue the GOP should run from. If we don't have majority support, the abortion issue is moving in the GOP's favor in that its support is lessening or weakening in this country. We are not the extreme party on this issue. The GOP has lots of candidates who can talk reasonably about the abortion issue. I'd be confident in Cruz and Paul discussing the issue with reporters - even Jeb.
The GOP's problem has been when people who are not equipped to talk about it say things. Mitt didn't even engage on it - and frankly I have no clue how he really felt on the issue. I hope we see more of this merely because I think this is an issue we should engage on. If the dems want to make an election about killing unborn babies - let's give it to them. Disagree on policy all you want, one quality that is indispensable in a
candidate is the ability to be confrontational with the media, because they *are* the enemy. Newt could do it, but he had way too much baggage as a candidate. I think the roles are separable. The serious presidential candidate can be "above the fray" most, if not all, of the time, as long as there's a hit man to do the dirty work. Bob Dole was supposed to do that for Ford. Dan Quayle did NOT do that for Bush. It might be okay for the big man to pimp-slap a reporter early on, but only to establish that this is someone with whom one does not f***, and then not again. Eisenhower understood this. Posted by: pep at April 08, 2015 05:19 PM (LAe3v) 379

And for those curious, pro-aborts like to point to Exodus 21:22 as "proof" that God doesn't view preborn children as alive. The problem is that they completely misread the verse. What is being said is that if a woman is caused to have her baby early, but no further harm is done, the assailant pays a fine. However, if the baby or woman is killed or maimed, an eye for an eye applies.
So basically, the exact opposite of the pro-abortion claim that God is fine with causing a woman to miscarry. Posted by: Lauren at April 08, 2015 05:32 PM (MYCIw) 422

I agree with the absolutist pro-life position in all cases. But we also live in a society that does not do that, and is resistant to it. The compromise is suggested as a camel's nose, to force the abortion advocates to recognize that it does indeed infringe on someone's right to life to allow abortion in the case of rape. Surely they don't value a rapist's life more than an innocent child. (they do) You may find even the mere description of such a compromise as monstrous, but as a political measure it is similar to counting a slave as 3/5 of a person for political representation. "that is not only the right response each and every time but exactly the right temperament. "
--- It was but of course the AP and Wapo lead with: Paul loses his cool will not anwser exception question. Of course anyone who watched the video can see plainly he didn't loose his cooln not at all, in fact he seem to mildly enjoy having the opportunity to throw that back at the reporter. The press is going to eventually paint all of them as the devil anyway, the only question is the timing, might as well cut them off at the knees when you can, and if that means they throw a tantrum so be it. Just keep at it, expose the hypocrisy every so often, they'll either get the hint and stop it, ask the question of the others, or just focus on trying to destroying you which they were eventually going to try to do anyway. First of all, could someone please ask Rand Paul to stop using the phrase, "Take our country back"? For minorities, -and I have heard many minorities comment about this to me personally - the phrase comes across as racist. They feel that when conservatives say "take the country back" they mean "take it back from the black man." I know it is meant to take the country back from the utopian, radical, leftist socialists, but to them it has a racist over tone. It can be twisted into a racist comment very easily by the left when they do their outreach activism to minorities. So please, Rand, please explain explicitly what you mean by this, and do not use it again. Thank you!

You just can't do this with every question, then it can look like or easily be painted that your avoiding the topics instead of just pushing back over well covered or unnecessary ground. This was a good one to do it on, there are and will be plenty of others. He should keep at it as should every other candidate who is or is about to run.
