Its sound like they are claiming there's not enough black Scifi writers. Which would be like finding a black unicorn, from what I can tell.
My caveat is I read a lot of sci if and I have no idea about the color and/or gender of the writer. I like 1. A good premise. 2. Viable execution in prose of said good premise. 1. A reporter may not injure a Progressive, or, through failing to pile on when the Progressive mob is piling on, cause a Progressive to come to harm. Microagression counts as harm.
2. A reporter must obey the orders given to it by the Progressive mob, except where such orders would conflict with the contents of the New York Times. 3. A reporter must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not injure Progressives with high victim status. Posted by: Splunge at April 06, 2015 09:41 PM (qyomX) 127

Neil Degrasse Tyson can write award winning sci-fi. Here's my entry...
"Neil Degrasse Tyson On Juniper" One day, Earth sent it's best and brightest to juniper, because the Earth was dying and shit. On juniper Neil Degrasse Tyson bonked an alien chick, because Neil Degrasse Tyson is a sex machine. They all called Neil Degrasse Tyson the Sex Machine because Neil Degrasse Tyson was actually an android from the future that came back to the past to roger some chick and save the future or some shit like that. Neil Degrasse Tyson was the Sex Terminator. Neil Degrasse Tyson then cloned a bunch of dinosaurs on juniper that broke free and ate some alien chicks, but Neil Degrasse Tyson stopped the dinosaur attacks and sexed up the remaining alien chicks on juniper. The End. That's a Hugo award winning story, right there. Posted by: neil degrasse tyson at April 06, 2015 09:46 PM (tBSrv) 140

My reaction was: "Well bless your hearts, aren't you just special snowflakes." By the way, each individual's share of Earth's atmosphere weighs just under 850,000 tons. Have you ever tried to heat up a single ton of anything, let alone something that weighs more than 10 of the biggest battleships ever made? I am looking at two games in my collection. One is "Grim Fandango" by Tim Schafer (which I've been playing off and on for the past decade plus). And I was given "Far Cry 4" as a present last Christmas (which I haven't opened). Schafer thought that this was teh! funneh!: "How many gamergaters does it take to make a single piece of armor? Fifty. One to do the modeling, one to do the materials, and forty-eight to tweet that it's not your shield." UbiSoft America wrote this tweet: "If you are against social justice, you are going to hate some of the things we wrote for Far Cry 4." Schafer doesn't have a snailmail address that I can find, so I'll just take a bladed instrument to "Fandango" (hedgeclippers, most likely) and send the clip to info@doublefine.com. Posted by: JohnnyBoy at April 06, 2015 10:05 PM Can't speak for all generations, but not true for mine. A lot of SFF readers had the same experience I did: that this award really, truly used to be a reliable guide to stuff that was worth reading. In fact, like the National Book Award, it was nearly the opposite of true -- you would best avoid a book with this award. Before I had knowledge of the bias of the Hugo Awards, I decided to check out the book Hominids by Robert J. Sawyer. It had an interesting concept (a parallel universe where Neanderthal won out is connected to our universe) and had won the award for Best Novel. I managed to stick it out, but it's just bizarre leftist propaganda.
The Neanderthal world is the liberal paradise. The Neanderthal protagonist explains that belief in God is illogical and idiotic. All Neanderthals have cameras that monitor and archive everything they do at all times. Neanderthal men spend most of their lives in gay relationships, only occasionally mating with females. Not doing so makes no sense. Neanderthals live side-by-side with the noble mammoths, unlike the evil humans who make animals extinct. Crime is answered by castrating the offender, his parents, siblings, and children. It's very preachy, and things I listed above and others are all clearly things the author supports while humanity is demonized. It also has a rape scene that should disqualify it from any award for good writing. Reading that book told me a lot about what the Hugo Awards are all about. You know what the main problem here is? Even the good guys in this war are unlikable. It's the battle for Middle Loserdom. Sci-Fi writers do seem to tend toward ego-mania. Why is this headline not "Murderous Stalinist Entertainment Weekly Writers Slander Peaceful Activists"?
Then again, if there were a Hall of Fame for misleading and insulting headlines, all in 9-pt type, it would be the size of Alaska. Whether they think they're winning and are emboldened, or think they're losing and are desperate, one thing the left can do is escalate. I expect to see more headlines like this. Aw, c'mon Ace. Most magazine sites and the light-reading web publications inspired by them probably pull content from their favorite left wing blogs nowadays.
EW owned up to it without reservation or delay. Whatever that means in the larger picture, it puts them in the top 20% or so of news outlets in 2015. Posted by: Funkotron at April 06, 2015 10:27 PM (c7rW1) 223

I took a minor ration of sh!t yesterday for praising Rolling Stone for going to a third party and publishing that report that ripped their reporting and their "process" to shreds. Posted by: Funkotron You think their correction is 'owning up'? "CORRECTION: After misinterpreting reports in other news publications, EW published an unfair and inaccurate depiction of the Sad Puppies voting slate, which does, in fact, include many women and writers of color. Hugo awards, named after Hugo Gernsback
"Gernsback reprinted the proto-science fiction and utopian writings of the 19th century, including work by H.G. Welles and Jules Verne, in his popular science magazines. Increasingly, he found his readers eager to enjoy speculative fiction, what he called "scientifiction," about technologically advanced future societies. Soon, he would spin off a series of pulp magazines, including Amazing Stories, devoted exclusively to this new genre. Gernsback saw science fiction as a means of popular education about science, technology, and change, insisting on scientific accuracy and encouraging the critical reading of scientific details. I've read this 5 times and I still don't understand the story...
There's an online campaign called Sad Puppies which is about nominating a bunch of 2014 books for Hugo Awards. They have a diverse mix of authors by sex, political leanings, and race. Entertainment Weekly libeled them as being all misogynistic racists ... and has since backpedaled. 30 seconds of Googling would have prevented EW from making the false statements in their original headline. Journalism fail. Posted by: ConservativeMonster at April 06, 2015 10:38 PM (0NdlF) 238
io9, is indeed an offshoot of Gawker.
And do I really hate them. Yet for some wierd reason, I have not yet unfollowed io9 on Facebook. Love it when they go on a Global Warming or Evolution screed - At least it lets shine their bias. Because, in both cases, its always, if you disagree with them, you're either dumb or engaging in a conspiracy to destroy 'science'. Posted by: Rodney C. Johnson at April 06, 2015 10:57 PM (M2oVh) 239

Can't dismiss this as "nerd". This is a cultural battle. Hold the line (Gamergate) or push back (whatever this is), these things are changes from the norm. Usually, the Left wins and steamrolls right over the previous culture, standards and norms. Here, they're not.
Politics is downstream from culture. Maybe there is hope. Posted by: Ken at April 07, 2015 05:55 AM (uyhPS) 242
