Reporters, Desperate To Find Some Potential Discrimination in Indiana, Finally Find One Business That Won't Cater a Gay Wedding

They're determined to prove it'll be Selma All Over Again should this RFRA stand, so they're going around randomly asking businesses if they would decline to serve gays, if they were allowed.

They haven't found that yet, but they have found one that would refuse to cater a gay wedding.

This is going to be a major loss for the Gay Wedding Industry -- one small family owned pizzeria won't provide gay weddings with the traditional pizza and calzone service.

What, did I wake up in Nazi Germany?

The O'Connor family told ABC 57 news that if a gay couple or a couple belonging to another religion came in to the restaurant to eat, they would never deny them service.

The O'Connors say they just don't agree with gay marriages and wouldn't cater them if asked to.

Meanwhile, the media have taken to referring to religious freedom as "religious freedom," with the so-called "sneer quotes" to indicate they don't believe this has anything to do with "religion" or "freedom."

"Gay weddings," however, are reported as gay weddings, sans quotes.

Make a law that mandates that every person in the country must give a gift to every gay couple who gets married.

125 Notice that this gets reported as "REFUSAL TO SERVE GAYS", even though it's specifically the wedding, and the pizzeria says outright they'd serve gay couples.

But what does it matter? The GOP is buckling on this issue. They will always buckle whenever there's opposition, especially from their business masters.

Just wait. Eventually a law will be passed forbidden child services from 'rescuing' a child from a religious household just because the children are raised with the teaching that same-sex marriage is wrong. And there will be FURY, talking about how this law makes it so parents can BEAT their GAY CHILDREN to DEATH. (It will say nothing of the sort, nor imply it.)

And the GOP will cave on that one too.

I have. The day it was legalized here in Maryland. It was a nice service, a couple of gals who've been together longer than my wife and I. I smiled. I said "Congratulations". I gave them a gift. It wasn't a wedding, no matter what they want to call it, but it was a nice service.

There are other reasons, too. For example, most states have a marital communications privilege. One spouse cannot testify against another regarding communications during a marriage. 247 kartoffel has it right. Only full freedom of association is workable as freedom of association, sort of like speech (an no, consequences for speech are not an analogue for this, as opposed to prior restraint, which would be).

So absent a tiny number of extreme situations involving human life/safety - denying emergency medical care - full freedom of association is the only actual "freedom" possible. Any limits or caveats invalidate the whole thing.

As we are seeing in this case.

So does anyone with the stomach and background want to explain how the whole public accommodation thing was determined? Is it in the Top 10 of disastrous, indefensible "judicial" atrocities that have gutted freedom and the rule of law in the name of infantile moral narcissism?

251 What they ultimately want is the state power to desecrate all religious institutions.

It's interesting to study the French Revolution. The anti-church stuff was really just a desire for church stuff. They didn't like the church because of its lands and other property and eventually seized it for the state.

They didn't want to crush the church, they wanted to co-opt it.

But we, today, are so much more pathetic. We have a population that is driven by the desire to not be criticized. Churches in the US don't have power, wealth or land. This is pure bullying for the rush of pushing somebody around.

It's interesting to study the French Revolution. The anti-church stuff was really just a desire for church stuff. They didn't like the church because of its lands and other property and eventually seized it for the state.

They didn't want to crush the church, they wanted to co-opt it.

--

I've studied the French Revolution a great deal. While I agree they wanted the property (and then created assignats equal to about three times the value of the property...) I also see how they attempted to create their own religion based on worship of the state. Look up Michael Burleigh's books, very revealing on how this repeats over and over again throughout history.

So some people here went to gay weddings and liek survived and shit? And the world didn't end? And life just kind of went on?

Say what??!!!! I was led to believe that gay marriage would mean the end of civilization as we know it. Weird huh?

I've been to 2 myself. One was two dudes, one was two womens. And no, they weren't the hot lesbian types and sadly neither were any of their friends. But both were fun. Same as any other wedding, open bar, cheesy speeches, drunk cousin Joe making an ass out of himself, etc.

Selma, not so much. I've never understood the claim gay marriage is the "civil rights issue of our time". Are gay people somehow second class citizens, relegated to the literal back of the bus and unable to get seats in restaurants? Are they beaten and prevented from voting?

The comparison is insulting to the memory of those who actually marched in Selma and suffered under Jim Crow laws. Wait, "insulting" isn't a strong enough word: the claim is insulting, rude, disrespectful, offensive and ridiculous.

I've been in favor of gay marriage for as long as it's been an issue. If the state is going to be in the marriage game, they have to provide equal protection to everyone. I have no problem with two dudes or two chicks getting to file taxes together or the law recognizing them as spouses when it comes to wills or hospital visitation or whatnot.

My issue NOW is that it's morphed from a liberty thing and me not really caring to "holy shit the gay lobby is trying to fine / imprison people who don't openly embrace gay marriage" which is a lot worse in my book than any "discrimination" gay people may have faced due to the fact that they couldnt / (cant still in some states) legally get civil unionized or married.

Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at April 01, 2015 01:14 PM (0LHZx)

One of my close friends (lib) told me about his sister who had a wedding in North Carolina about 8 years ago.

Well, it was called a "commitment ceremony" but apparently it was a significant affair. You can have a gay "wedding" without a license. Declare your love and all that. Flowers, catering, the whole 9 yards. Officiated by a defrocked minister. From what I can tell, most gay weddings are subdued affairs, either in the courthouse or in a park with a small crowd.

Lasted about 3 years. Sister wanted kids. Wife didn't. Wife wanted to have cyber sex with friends and strangers and didn't understand why sister was so bothered by that.

I'll restate my question since you've ignored it:

What does attending (or not, for that matter) a gay wedding ceremony have to do with the state, through force of arms, compelling an individual to violate his/her belief system as a function of feeding his/her family?

The gay marriage thing is government putting an (implicit) gun to our head and saying, "sell this."

I'm not sure which is worse, but the reason we have a constitution and have such strict rules on what the feds can do is because this kind of coercion never ends well for the people.

In my experience with gay activists (and long story short, but I actually do have a decent amount of experience working with them), they're liberal first and gay second.

It's not really about "gay issues" its just a wedge issue to push liberalism.

Now most gay non-activists I know are not really on board with that. They were being honest when they said they just wanted to get on their boyfriends health insurance plan or whatever and otherwise they're happy to just be left alone. But, you know, they're not a powerful loud lobby.

The problem is that if you keep it in the basement you are apparently *still* subject to public accommodation.

I've attended a lot of gay shit. A metric crapton, for work, because of relatives, etc etc. Been to their bars, their picnics, their parades, their bathouses, their pornshops and "bookstores", their homes, their beaches, their parks, their events.

I would not set foot in their weddings. That right there is Hellfire.

I do have to admit though, I'm one of those you've been condemning throughout this thread.

I truly don't give a shit what legal contract consenting adults enter. Not in the slightest. It's not my business.

That, however, is a hard and fast line for me. There can be no wiggling with regard to churches, faiths, compulsion of un-related third parties, et al.

Because individual liberty.

I'd say that makes me logically consistent, but YMMV.

455 We are coming close to making the Bible illegal.

It says, right there on page 327:

Leviticus 20:13

"If a man also lies with a man, as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

Well, that's that, then.

Discriminatory. Illegal.

Start the bonfires.

What if I don't want to serve at the gay wedding because I just don't like the guy or gal? What if it has nothing to do with being gay?

What if a straight couple comes in and say, nah I don't like you, I think you will be a pain to deal with and its not worth my time as a business owner?

Now, that is probably a stupid ass thing to do as a business owner and it will hurt my business as word of mouth spreads but why should I be forced to enter a business contract? If this can happen, then why not force me to offer the cake or whatever at half price? Hell, why not free!?

Is that ok? This is about being forced into a business contract against your will.

461 I've been in favor of gay marriage for as long as it's been an issue. If the state is going to be in the marriage game, they have to provide equal protection to everyone.

That's the attitude that's the problem. Marriage exists and was ordained by Darwin to deal with the handicap that heterosexuals have with the whole birth thing.

So, in fact, gay relationships have a natural advantage that marriage attempts to ameliorate.

Better to say that SSM is just a simpler solution. The current storm is what happens when you start talking about "rights".

469 My father was a partner in an accounting firm. This was back in the 70s. His long-time assistant and right-hand man, Roy, was gay.

Like many 70s bosses, my dad frequently hosted parties at our house for his staff. Everyone brought their husbands or wives, and Roy brought his live-in boyfriend.

My dad was an old-fashioned Italian guy, but he never once made even a crack about Roy's sexuality. Roy was a great accountant and a loyal and excellent assistant. That's all my dad cared about.

And as kids growing up with Roy and his boyfriend around, we thought nothing of it. It was no big deal. Maybe my sibs and I occasionally snickered a little about Roy's "wife" because that sounded funny to us, but that was it. I used to work off the books cutting grass at Roy's apartment building (I got to ride a riding lawnmower! I would have done it for free!) Roy would pick me up and drive me there, fix me lunch and drive me home when I was done. My dad wasn't the slightest bit concerned about his pre-teen son spending the day with a gay man. Why would he be? Anymore so than leaving me alone with any man?

My point is, I was raised to not be homophobic (or racist for that matter.) And I've always had a live and let live attitude about gays, until recently.

It's this Gaystapo shit that turned me against them. Or many of them, anyways.

Way to go, Gaystapo.

I've never understood the push on this. If I was a parent of a teen girl who was on a sports team, the last thing I would want would be for her to have a male coach and male assistant coaches.

Conversely, if I was the parent of a teen boy on the football/basketball team, the last thing I would want would be for his coach/assistant coaches to be women.

Same thing with Boy Scouts (though I know THAT's a hot button). I would NEVER allow a hypothetical teenager son to go on a camping trip with a scoutmistress and assistant scoutmistress.

The opportunities for an issue arising are just too great. That's not saying that any femalecoaches or scoutmistresses in charge of teenage boys would be pedophiles, just saying the issue would be more likely to arise. So why do I get pilloried as a bigot when I expand that to include men and women who's sexual tastes run toward their own gender?

The article on the Federalist about Selma envy was pretty spot on about this movement. It's about wanting to be self-righteous, bending others to succumb to your will, and feeling good about yourself for doing this (without having to deal with hosings, lynchings, and police dogs).

However, I will say:

The first time was a long long time ago when things were much much casual and unofficial, and people along the route could just decide to join the parade if they wanted to. So I am two friends did just that, as a lark.

The next four times was in the '90s, when the company where I worked had a float in the parade as a way to generate publicity and good will/customers.

The final two times was with a startup I co-founded where we marched and tossed schwag to people along the route as a PR stunt!

534 "Since the dawn of civilization virtually every religion known to man has had a sacrament specific to that religion known as "marriage"."

it is not only this, NO BELIEF SYSTEM prior to any religion allowed this lunacy.

When scholars investigates papua tribes or Amazonian tribes with no contact with the outside world, they routinely find NO TRACE of homosexuality or ghey marriage. Same for African tribes, same with a lot of Asian nomads tribes.

How the homofascists explain this? since they believe it is naturally possible that 10% of the world population is ghey?

Pestilence is right on all accounts.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out

But if the state insists on sticking its nose in to the whole marriage business, they lose the ability to set the rules. Because of equal protection, the courts, congress, everything else.

Which is why my preferred outcome is for the states to exit the whole marriage business and let churches run it, since it is, after all, a religious institution.

565 I would take exception to this characterization. Refusing to take part in someone else's sin does not mean you hate them.

It doesn't even need to be sin. Any perceived resistance to the Leftard Agenda is automatically characterized as either "hate" or "*-phobic."

I've developed what I call the Rutabaga Rule. It goes like this: I don't care for rutabaga so I don't eat it. I don't "hate" it and I certainly don't have an unnatural fear of it. I just don't care for it.

Substitute the word rutabaga for any item on the psycholeftard's progressive agenda and you can see that their accusations are not unsimilar to that of a four-year-old.

They are emotional children and should be treated as such.

They don't see how if THEY can boycott over a belief... why can't OTHERS?

608 "So someone please remind me again why it's OK for Apple to sell iCrap in nations where "gay" means "see how high they can bounce" ?

Anyone?"

This is very easy.

You hate what you know well. All homosexuals have a bug up their asses about Christians, the church, the bible and in general religious people of the Christian persuasion.

It is fun, priceless and they have zero risks.

Being people that cannot procreate (even when they purchase uteruses and eggs, the subconscious will tell them that it is not really procreating) are by definition very short sighted. I had this realization talking with a straight couple that decided not to have children. Now in their 60s, it is their attitude not to think about the future (the consequences of wild immigration, etc) because they simply will not leave anybody behind.

So this is why gheys do not care about islam. It is not a threat in the immediate, the gheys killed are not of their interest, being narcissistic and self-centered as they are and very tricky.

I mean what can do you to prevent muslims from killing gheys? that takes courage, money, ideas, etc

The average ghey is not able to think further his nail polish.

So it is a mixture of stupidity and pure unrestrained nastiness and bullying.

You know that say 'strong with the weak and weak with the strong'.

That sums up the left and the gheystapo.

Nah, another faux-"libertarian" or parody troll mocking them. Any actual libertarian will always side with conservatives for some rather obvious reasons. Some might find socons annoying, but they're far less spooked about some phantom "theocracy" than the very real, very in-the-present stripping of civil liberties being performed by the authoritarian left on a daily basis.

So Dutchie might be a parody troll mocking fauxtairians concerns centering entirely around legal pot (hence the name) and prostitution. They're pretty much just your garden-variety leftards with only a single issue rather than an entire grievance industry.

"it was unclear if a significant amount of oil spilled from the shallow-water Abkatun Permanente platform, "which largely serves to separate gas, oil and other petroleum products, and pump them to refineries onshore."

We may be in luck. It is used to "separate gas, oil and other petroleum products", so it probably is NOT a production platform with wells underneath. It should be possible to close off all the wells feeding it and by cutting off the fuel, put the fire out. That will take some time, but is pretty straightforward.
