Quote of the Day I

And since wealthy people don't spend nearly as high a percentage of their incomes as poor people do, much wealth is sitting around not doing its job.

-- NYT reporter Mark Bittman proving he has no clue about modern economics.

Quote of the Day II

This should be fun to watch. Admittedly, this should also be a gutter war without rules or mercy, but I can't imagine that Freedom Watch didn't know that, going in. Sometimes you just have to expect that it's all going to end in tears, recriminations, and blood on the floor.

-- Moe Lane on Freedom Watch's racketeering lawsuit against Hillary Clinton

Quote of the Day III

Go to Google News and search for "teacher + arrest + sex." How many times a week are public school teachers in America charged with illegally having sex with their underage students? My guess is that it happens more commonly than college students getting raped. So why aren't feminists marching into your local Board of Education meeting and demanding that something be done about the "rape epidemic" in public schools?

Think about that.

-- RSM on The 'Rape Epidemic' That Isn't

Quote of the Day IV

The primary purpose of race-talk in America today is to allow elite whites to silence and shame non-elite whites. Thus, it's not surprising that the people pushing it are...a bunch of elite whites.

-- Insty on Starbuck's lame race talk campaign

"Dog or Jewish Boyfriend?"

But I find it inconceivable that The New Yorker would have run this piece if it didn't have Lena Dunham or some other bold-face-name in the byline. Titled, "Dog or Jewish Boyfriend?" it's a pop-quiz for the reader to guess whether she's talking about her dog or, that's right, her Jewish boyfriend.

...Still, I don't think she was going for anti-Semitism, though she'll happily pocket the edginess that accusation brings. Rather, like so much of what Dunham does, it reeks of self-indulgence. She clearly think it's very clever. But as a piece of writing it's remarkably un-clever. It's not terrible. It's more like a solid B in a college-writing seminar. And, I suppose it is a sharp way for her to do what she loves: over-share the various details of her life, most of which, like this piece, are incredibly boring if ascribed to a person you're not fascinated by.

But that's just it. For some unfathomable reason, there are people who find Dunham fascinating. She clearly has a gift for convincing late-middle-aged white urban liberals that she's on to something big and important. I'm just amazed she's pulled off the con for this long. And I'm disappointed that even The New Yorker fell for it.

Iranian Defector: US Team 'Mainly There to Speak on Iran's Behalf'

There's A Crazy Man in the Country's Cockpit Who's Locked Out Congress and the Courts

Obama and his minions are huddled wherever they're huddled, busy destroying the Western World with their bizarre policies and eagerness to make a deal with Iran that is so desperate it makes the word pathetic seem pathetic. The results of this desperation have been wretched, a fascistic new Persian Empire emerging from Libya to Yemen with Obama auditioning for the role of Cyrus the Great - or is it Ahmadinejad Junior? Whatever the case, it's horrible  Even those same Democrats know it.  They're embarrassed - and they should be.  But for the most part they don't have the guts to say anything. This is the kind of administration that exchanges a creepy sociopath like Bergdahl for five Islamic homicidal maniacs and expects praise for being humanitarian.  And everyone walks away shaking their heads.

It's hard to know why Obama is doing it all.  I know it sounds like a rude overstatement but in a way he reminds me of that crazy German pilot flying that plane into that alpine cliff, only the plane is us (America and the West).  Does he hate us all that much - or is it just Netanyahu?  Whatever the explanation, it's mighty peculiar.  At this point almost no one  in the Congress appears to be backing him up - and yet he continues.  Who knows what will happen next?

Okay Kids Hillary is #Ready!

So after $225 get cat back who had been given a steroid shot and loaded me with medicines like Doxycycline to give cat.

Saturday morning he showed some improvement with application of meds and me feeding him through a syrette watered down baby food. Enough energy to jump on couch and later to actually find the litter box in fact. Instead of trapping him in house for 12 hours as I went to a show in an attempt to raise some cash, put him out with his litter mates and mama cat. When I got home no sign of him.

At high school there are a lot of male teachers and I'd suspect that there's an issue of sex with underage girls. I think the reason that womyns aren't outraged at teacher on student sex is because in the liberal mind teachers are put on a pedestal and seen as victimized by a society that underpays them, makes them work long sweatshop hours, and forces them to spend a third of their income feeding and clothing their students. So who can blame them if they, in a moment of weakness, screw a student or two. MAYBE IF WE PAID THEM MORE THEY WOULDN'T BE REDUCED TO THIS!

Yeah, one hears this sort of rhetoric on the left. Somehow what people do with their own money is the business of others. The left doesn't believe in private property, so sure, other people's money really belongs to the community and is to be used the way certain judgmental members of the community see fit. You see, they know what is best. Thing is, the rich invest their money instead of wasting it on baubles. Sure, they consume as well, but they do invest a portion of their income in businesses, developing new technologies and ideas, etc..

144 So sorry, Anna. I once heard a radio interview with a guy who hired himself out to find lost dogs and cats. According to him, dogs would roam but cats would hunker down, stay very close to the house, and not be tempted by food or respond to calling. They would forget who their owners were, even if they had always lived with them. I've had many, many cats and have been grateful for that advice. Most times, they were under the porch or a dark corner or nook by the house, but always by the house, never in the barns, sheds or farther away. They are so freaking hard to see. I'm sorry to say that a couple went off to die as well and we'd find their hidden skeletons later. Sometimes you can't do anything but if you still look, keep looking by and under the house. My best wishes for you and your cat.

And Michonne looks particularly ugly and grouchy which is funny since she is such a beautiful woman in real life.

How big is Dingy Harry's security detail? 2, maybe 3?

How many would be with him if he's meeting a couple of goodfellas? My guess is zero, at least zero in the room. Perhaps they were in the next room, and heard something, and arrived just in time to subdue and cuff the bar of soap that Dingy Harry slipped on.

162 What's frightening about the mass murdering whacos,
such as the co-pilot or the guy who killed all the kids in the Newton

that a person is messed up enough to do something like that?

Posted by: nerdygirl at March 29, 2015 11:47 PM (agnOR)

The killer co-pilot was issued a note by his own doctor stating he was unfit to fly. He shredded the note. I guess German privacy laws precluded the doctor contacting the airline directly.

And, IIRC, the Newton shooter was long known as a mental case, and he murdered his mother to take her gun.

Both cases speak to there being too much laxity in dealing with people who have certain types of mental illness.

203 Yeah, one hears this sort of rhetoric on the left.

Posted by: Mistress Overdone at March 29, 2015 11:39 PM (2/oBD)

I would bet that if the government took all the money from the wealthy and redistributed it to everyone else, that in 5 years the formerly wealthy would be wealthy again, and the layabouts would be poor again.

First thing the rich would do is set up companies to "bling" shit out, and the layabouts would spend half their money of cheap shit that is shiny.

Next thing would be that they would set up companies that sell merchandise that really isn't necessary like "Beats by Dre" headphones.

While they were doing this, the "formerly" wealthy would know that they acquiring wealth, and the easiest way to acquire wealth is not to spend your money.

Yeah, about that rare part......
They just released a study showing how a fetus reacts to a mother smoking. I must have reacted just the same way when I was a tadpole.
It pisses me off when they say it's just a clump of cells. From the moment of conception, that "clump of cells" is a human being. It will not be an eagle, it will not be a giraffe, it will not be a shark, nor will it be a gecko. It is a human being. Any one that posits differently is not into science "sexually". The party of science always shows their ignorance of the subject in spectacular ways. An unborn child is genetically human, distinct from the mother, and alive. It can't be anything but a unique human being. When you allow people to kill living human beings for the sake of convenience, the cold reason of the experts is always pushing the envelope. It suggests that that it would be convenient to kill the disabled. Then the insane. Then the stupid. Then the political dissident.

256 This is Why I Don't Generally Link to Gateway Pundit

Yeah, I generally don't take Gateway Pundit seriously. He is more interested in breaking stories than getting the facts correct. He's like, "Ready, Fire, Aim".

I remember a post where Hoft was all incensed about a rock band burning Sarah Palin in effigy. He was in High Dudgeon about it and said it was hate speech.

Before long, a commenter said, "Dude, relax. It's GWAR. That's their schtick. They do that with everybody."

Sure enough, another commenter linked a video of them torturing the Obamas on the rack or something.

So it was much ado about nothing.

Today I regard Gateway Pundit on a par with Newsmax or World Net Daily. They occasionally break important stories, but there's an awful lot of noise and hand-waving.

Whenever I see a link to Gateway Pundit, I want to see independent confirmation before I'll believe it.

293 So, the big thing for the fiancee and I today was a 5-hour beekeeping class in Scotts Valley. Because our group was large, there weren't enough veils for everyone, so we visited the bees in two groups for about 40 minutes per group. Since I had thoughtfully acquired my own painter's coverall, I attended both -- somewhat closer the second time (with veil and gloves) than the first.

I'd been doing some reading-up.....they are fascinating creatures.....but I hadn't realized some of the implications of what I already knew. For example, I knew that bees held to a strict segregation of duties based on age -- a worker bee's early tasks are deep inside the hive and involve feeding larva, capping cells, moving honey and pollen to specific parts of the hive, feeding the queen, and other such internal tasks. After a while, they graduate to tasks such as guarding the entrance. For the last part of their six-week lifecycle, they go out and forage for food.

What I didn't realize is that makes it possible to sort bees into "young" and "old" ones very easily. Let's say you had a cardboard box with a couple of pounds of bees in it. To begin with, they'll all be clustered at one top edge. So you gently bump it on the ground and they'll all fall to the bottom of the box. Then, if you pour the bees into an empty basin, all the older bees will look around themselves and say, "right, then...." and fly off (and back to their hive). The younger bees will stay in the basin.

When harvesting honey, you shake the frame you're harvesting over the hive until the young bees fall off -- they won't fly back. Make sure you get them in the hive, 'cause if you miss and they end up on the ground, they won't fly up to the "landing strip" next to the door.

Very fun, very informative, and very interesting.

294 Mike Hammer, I felt the same kind of awe. Seeing the Orion Nebula was just....incredible. I was looking at something whose light started coming to earth 1344 years ago. Incredibly, what we see today, Jesus would not have seen in the night sky. The Egyptians would have seen Orion, the constellation, but not the nebula. It would have only started being visible around 700 AD, at least that is my own conclusion. I was able to see four of the six stars of the Trapezium. How cool is it that I can look up in the night sky and look back in history?

315 >>>Isn't amazing that there is so much beautiful music in the world that so many people have never heard?

J.R.R. Tolkien put it thus:

I sit beside the fire and think
of all that I have seen,
of meadow-flowers and butterflies
in summers that have been;

Of yellow leaves and gossamer
in autumns that there were,
with morning mist and silver sun
and wind upon my hair.

I sit beside the fire and think
of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring
that I shall ever see.

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood in every spring
there is a different green.

I sit beside the fire and think
of people long ago,
and people who will see a world
that I shall never know.

But all the while I sit and think
of times there were before,
I listen for returning feet
and voices at the door.

"In every wood in every spring there is a different green" is a wonderful way to think about undiscovered music. But old friends are important too.

Faure gets me every time.

There are a number of threats -- the Varroa mite (which may be the parasite you're referencing) is merely one of them. It's east Asian and the European honeybees have no defenses. But, like so many natural phenomena, there is no magic bullet that comes without costs....so a variety of approaches are being tried.

Yeah usually metal. Its what I know, its what I'm good at. I do have a classical guitar background though, so I used to look for that stuff a lot, but older stuff like late renaissance/baroque period. As stupid as it sounds, to me those dudes were the metal heads of the era. Its music written for actual guitar type instruments like vihuela, lute, and 5 course guitar. It has a much older sound a feel. I guess more authentic.

I found these 2 gems a few years back when searching for that music. it gives you an idea of what I mean by older sounding. This was written a few hundred years before Beethoven.

367 Ira,

Well, mine, if I ever get around to recording them. 8-)

The freshest interpretation I've heard in a while is by Matt Haimovitz, although I lost that recording a long while ago to a friend.

In general, I prefer a clear, open sound to an overly romanticized one, and some tasteful flexibility of line/tempo without too much rigidity or unawareness of momentum.

Honestly, though, everybody does something amazing at some point in the suites, so I like to listen widely and be surprised at random moments.

OK, now I'm _really_ out...

Probably.

Hey, SMFH. Up @293, I related the adventures with bees that the fiancee and I did today.

377 Bers, lotta that High Renaissance vocal stuff is admirably suited to cello multi-track recording, although it is amazingly difficult to pull off well.

Totally agree with you about the "metal-ness" of some of that stuff, though. They were creating new sounds out the air.

Posted by: Piercello at March 30, 2015 02:32 AM (QJCCx)

yeah I love that earlier period stuff. I played a lot of Bach stuff, but a good amount was adapted from cello, or violin. It was a lot of fun, but man that earlier stuff makes you time travel. Especially when Julian bream plays it, you can just imagine it sounding just that way. I found the earlier I went back the more fun it was.

Yeah, no offense guy, but I won't be visiting your beehives.

Hi Gushka,

All of us have been flattened by the unexpected or (worse)
expected death of those close to us.

Hang in there, you will, in time, accept this, and realize
that God has a plan for each of us.

You got me weepy, just now.

Crying is OK

Posted by: Ira Weatheral at March 30, 2015 02:38 AM (qry2M)

382 I'm deathly allergic to bees.

So...

And I've tempted fate enough in my lifetime as it is.

As of this point, our bees are entirely hypothetical -- though the bees at the place we visited were real.

Especially at the second hive, I had 'em bouncing off of me pretty regularly -- something about a wall of white tyvek (which they probably could sting through) had them treating me like an inanimate object.

My favorite Heinlein quote is: "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

A whore should be judged by the same criteria as other, professionals offering services for pay--such as dentists, lawyers, hairdressers, physicians, plumbers, etc. Is she professionally competent? Does she give good measure? Is she honest with her clients? It is possible that the percentage of honest and competent whores is higher than that of plumbers and much higher than that of lawyers. And enormously higher than that of professors.

404 How anybody expects a man to stay in business with every two-bit wowser in the country claiming a veto over what we can say and can't say and what we can show and what we can't show -- it's enough to make you throw up. The whole principle is wrong; it's like demanding that grown men live on skim milk because the baby can't eat steak.
