Emergency Backup Gun Thread [Weirddave]

Nothing much seems to be in the hopper right now, so here's stuff I've bookmarked over the past few weeks.

Points for honesty, I suppose. Insane, but honest.

Concealed Carry

Passerby With Concealed Carry Permit Stops Slaughter In Philly

It always boggles my mind that so many people just can't seem to understand two basic things. #1 Gun laws are useless as a method of stopping criminals from carrying guns because criminals by definition ignore laws, and #2 people who apply for CCPs are the law abiding, again by definition. They are also those most likely to accept the responsibility to step up and do the right thing, as this story demonstrates. How many would have died without the intervention of the guy with the CCP?

14 Things Everyone Should Understand About Guns

Guns can be dangerous in the wrong hands. But so are articles about guns written by people who don’t understand anything about them.

Hmm. Hope I get a passing grade, I'm writing about guns.

GOTW Answer

1873 Springfield "Trapdoor" Carbine. Beautiful one too, I got the picture from an auction site where the gun was expected to fetch at least $20K. A pretty significant advance in rifle design, it didn't help Custer and his boys at Little Big Horn. Speaking of which, if you ever get a chance to go to the Little Big Horn battlefield, do it. It's amazingly well done, you can drive (or walk) the entire progression of the battle and really get a feel for exactly how it all went down.

Today's thread brought to you by a Smith & Wesson Model 10 with Billy Club extension, one of 5 very unusual guns.

12 Best value gun is a Canik Stingray. About $350 if you can find one in stock. Check out the youtube reviews. Built like a tank and no ftf or fte for me in over 1000 rounds. Little too big for ccw, but nice shooter.

19 Once I built a black powder .38 Colt Navy Revolver from a kit. I could never quite get the cylinder to line up with the barrel, so I never fired it. I will admit that it was a fun project. At least I think it was .38. It was a long time ago. I know it wasn't a .44.

Posted by: Old Blue at March 29, 2015 08:31 PM (9iR5/)

20 So I bought a couple of Walther PP magazines for my Walam 48, figuring, "Hey, it's a PP copy, the mags must be the same, right?" Uh, no. Mags would not insert.

Looked the mags over side by side with the Walam's, and they were identical except that while they both have a ridge running the length of the mag on the left side, the PP's is set a fraction further back. Grrr.

Not wanting to waste forty bucks, I took the grips off the pistol to see what was fouling. All I had to do to get them partially inserted was to grind just a hair off the inside bottom of the magazine well. It slid in up to the bottom of the frame, then fouled again. Grinding there was not an option, so I disassembled the mag and got out the Dremel and a cutting wheel. I excised just enough of that ridge to insert the mag, and now it fits perfect (maybe a hair low in the chamber) and feeds dummy rounds just fine. If it ever gets above freezing around here I'll see if the snow is melted at the local pit and put a few dozen rounds through.

WECSOG forever!

26 I do enjoy shooting the 45-70, though in rifle, I expect the carbine has a bit of a kick, especially with the rifle ammo.
There are gobs of modifications to the trapdoor, the later ones had things like the rod-bayonet system and the Allen sights that were carried over to the Krag.
There were better designs than the trapdoor by the way, but the idea originally was to use up the huge numbers of Rifle Muskets by converting them to breech loaders, and then of course there is the unwillingness to risk a major conversion to a new system until it was absolutely required.

The Sharps, the Spencer, and various bolt actions from the Mauser on would have been just dandy, and handier as well.

If you want to reload for the 45-70 trapdoor, only use black powder or a black powder substitute like pyrodex or black canyon or such. The sharper detonation of the nitro powders will break your gun even if you load down to lower velocities.
You see a lot of old guns with the stocks cracked at the wrist of the stock because they newer powders were too powerful.

There is no extractor, so to reload you have to pull the arbor pin and let the cylinder drop out. The chain is to make sure the cylinder does not get lost in all the excitement.

40 OK, Horde, I need some counseling here. It's been years since I've had a firearm in the house. I used to have a 410 and a nickel plated .38 Ruger revolver that my sister sold to a couple of asswipes while I was over the road and they wouldn't let me buy them back. Long story. Now, I'm looking for a couple of home defense kind of weapons. I'm thinking a twelve gauge shotgun and a pistol of some type.

It does really good, but they aren't supposed to be a long range bullet.

One of the tricks if you have an Enfield .38-200 revolver and you want to reload but the .357 bullets common to find in the US are just a tad too small, use the hollow based bullets, the skirts expand just right to seal the bore and keep the bullet from rattling down the pipe. It really makes the grouping close right down in the Enfield.

56 40 - Hard to go wrong with an old Remington 870 pump with an 18" barrel, and/or a nice bread-and-butter .38 Special revolver (Colt, Smith or Ruger).

If I was limited to one gun (shudder) and cost was an issue, it would probably be a .38 revolver with a 4" barrel.

You'll get a ton of suggestions. JMHO.

58 40, if you're thinking strictly self defense, a twelve gauge pump gun with an 18 or 20 inch barrel and an extended magazine would take care of most problems.

Easy to find more selection in the 12 ga too. If recoil is a problem there is always the reduced recoil buck shot loads.

70 as for back up guns: I think .380 is a small as you would want to go. Many smaller pistols have reliability problems. The Walthers PPKs in 380 seems ok but is way too small for hands like mine.

Unfortunately, the Maks and CZ82s are getting rather more difficult to find. I've been kicking myself for awhile for not picking up an 82 when they were cheap and plentiful.

The Polish P64 milsurps in 9mm Makarov are available right now for a bit over $200. Supposed to be pretty decent pseudo-PPKs.

79 >>Anyone know anything about the Micro Desert Eagle?

Yes.

Its a copy of a small Czech .380 (IIRC called the "Hero"). IIRC, it uses a somewhat novel gas-assisted blowback action, not the conventional Browning based tilting/lock action. The "Desert Eagle" name is purely for branding, this gun shares no similarity whatever with the original Israeli gun.

The gun takes .380 and unlike most of the pocket .380s is made of actual metal (not polymer). Unfortunately, there is no "ledge" in front of the triggerguard, meaning if you're accustomed to a fairly conventional rest-hand-in front of triggerguard grip and you fire the gun that way, you stand a reasonable chance of blowing a hole in your left hand index finger. That alone (for me) is reason NOT to buy this.

83 I find Snopes to be just fine on empirical stuff. It's certainly easy enough to check, and it didn't pass the smell test when I read it. So I'm confident it's bullshit.

Sadly, we gun folk tend to be a tad too credulous on outrageously outrageous outrage stuff.

84 20 gauge fan here too. And the price difference in ammo is really small, esp when you factor how much you'll be shooting it.

There are a good amount of used .357's on the market if you look for them, even check gunbroker dot com to get an idea. I love the Colt Trooper III I found... and it's a Colt! But a 686 or Ruger would be good too of course.

89 >>Hi point best gun for money . They ain't pretty but they work and they
can take a beating. They're almost disposable they're so cheap.

No, they're not. Hi-points are top-heavy (they use sub-machine gun like blowback actions) bulky, and highly inaccurate.

Absolute best bang for the buck in a conventional defensive gun (IMO) is an older Smith and Wesson model .38 specia l10 revolver. There is still a glut of them from back in the days where these were standard issue police revolver. That nobody really wants wheelguns anymore just makes them cheaper.

These were made of all forged parts, and from back in the day when every single Smith gun was hand fitted by a gunsmith. Guns are highly accurate, highly reliable, and will last several generations even with heavy use. Parts and accessories are also cheap and readily available. You basically can't even buy a new production gun like this anymore.

And you can find them for under $250, still, if you're patient and look around.

and

A wheel gun in .357 or .38.

96 Oldblue, For home defense it's hard to beat a pump shotgun, 12 or 20 ga. but I prefer 20 for easier control. Don't go for full choke. A more open choke is better for household distances.

Add a 38 Special or357 magnum revolver loaded with 38 Special ammo for a carry around or night stand piece. The revolver is simpler to operate than a semi and 38 Special ammo is cheap and available.

Both shotguns and revolvers are available used that are fully reliable. There's a ton of information out there on these matters but these are my preferences.

+1.

Judge platform has so many flaws I don't even know where to begin.

-Notoriously bad (Taurus) build quality
-Primers tend to "walk out of shotgun shells potentially *LOCKING UP GUN*.
-.410 shotshells effectively worthless on anything larger than a bunny rabbit.
-Bad patterning with shot, limiting effective range of shotgun to only a few yards.
-.45LC round itself has good ballistics, but ammo itself is not cheap, typically not found on the shelves of "big box" or sporting goods stores, and round is relatively inaccurate from this platform.
-Gun itself is bulky and ungainly.

103 Another comment on self defense guns. I used to sleep with a S &W mdl 29 next to the bed. Then I got to thinking what if someone broke into the house and stole it. Good bye to a very expensive and much cherished gun. So it went into the locker and a Ruger MKll .22 took it's place. It doesn't have the stopping power, but I can get 10 shots of in 3 seconds, and it's only worth 1/3 what the .44 is. If a gun is going to be needed pronto, you might consider what you can afford to lose.

I'm a chick who worked hard to get my BS in science and an advanced degree. I'm sick to death of stupid, stupid, stooooopid chicks setting us back to the stone age.

You don't understand why the constitution and the rule of law including property rights and a limited government are necessary for civilization? Stupid!

You don't get that the lawful concealed carry owners are protecting you and everybody else? Stupid!

You don't believe in vaccinations? You think herbs and chanting over crystals cure diseases? You don't see how important men are to the raising of children and defense from other very bad men? You don't think there is an external reality that is verifiable? You don't see how different (better) life is for women in Judeo-Christian nations versus in all others? Stoooooopid!

I have to spend an inordinate amount of my day negotiating with extremely profoundly stoooooopid women who have "feelings" that, in their silly opinions, trump physical reality. If I refuse to address the crap load of nonsense they print off the internet, they run and complain.

They offend and annoy me. They are an insult to every woman who has struggled to become competent and knowledgeable in some real area of life.

Senator Mary Ann Carlson should have to speak to women who were saved from violent crimes by carrying a weapon (or saved by a law-abiding citizen who was carrying) before she pontificates about "who is likely to commit a crime." Seriously - what a stupid bag.

Posted by: fairweatherbill at March 29, 2015 09:16 PM (o/3Hk)

Not just because of burglars hitting the nightstand.

If you actually have to use it defensively, odds aren't good of getting the gun back. It'll be taken as evidence until the legal stuff is complete, and depending on the honesty and assholery of your local DA/PD, it's likely to either be shredded and melted down without informing you or be "lost" and end up in someone's personal gun collection. Both are things that have happened all too often.

Even worse, some jurisdictions have a policy of NEVER returning guns to their rightful owners, as they classify them as "crime guns". Less so nowadays, but it still happens.

A defensive gun should be one you can afford to lose.

Honestly, there are so many excellent handguns that cost under $500, it would take a page to list all of them.

More interesting would be best handguns for under $250. Its a much shorter list, but you can still find a few gems at that price point: Eg, Smith model 10 .38 revolver, Ruger P series autos, Makarov and knockoffs (EG FEG P63, Polish P64). Star milsurp autos can be had around $300.

There was a time not that long ago when you could still get surplus Smith "number" series autos at that price, but I think those days are gone now.

147 Cap n' Ball revolvers are for fun. With fresh loads, they'll do for defense, but are highly ill-advised as a permanent solution thereto.

Black Powder is hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture from the air. Your loads can go "damp", in anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. More so in Houston, less so in El Paso.

Precussion caps aren't exactly famous for their reliability, either.

Also, Black Powder is highly corrosive. Mostly, post firing, but that hygroscopic factor plays here, too. A cylinder loaded for months on end with the same loads, will usually have started to corrode in the chambers.

A Cap & Ball revolver is better than nothing, but takes far more care and attention than a modern, cartridge loading gun with non-corrosive primers and smokeless powder.

Any major gun store will gladly sell you a mechanically fine, cosmetically weak handgun for well within your price range.

I'll endorse the Horde's take on the shotguns though. Any shotgun is better than no shotgun at all.

So shot my second tactical shotgun match today.

One of the most enjoyable shootin' matches I do. Importantly, there are 1) lots of rounds shot (100+, minimum to justify half a day spent), 2) interesting tactical choices and options 3) action, motion, physical difficulty apart from the pure shooting part.

Use a stock Mossberg 500, so 5+1, lots of "tactical reloads". When I actually practice I'll get much better, as I see from improving in each of the 7 stages today.

Not gonna modify the shotgun or get another one, may consider getting the spring-loaded belt-clip shellholders that keep the shells lined up one way for easier loading. I like keeping everything stock and basic, leaving only one way (improving myself) to get better.

Absolutely. I happened to see on Slate this week a repost of a silly article from 1999, where this woman wrote about how she'd get the vapors every time she saw one of her husband's guns, and that her kid's teacher was horrified that some of her students had viewed guns in real life.

I'm kind of old, so I remember when the "women's lib" movement was about doing the same empowering things that men do, like playing and working outdoors, learning new physical skills, and being brave. Where I grew up, girls played sports, learned to shoot, and drive all kinds of large vehicles and boats, maybe rode horses, etc.

I was embarrassed that this woman was so weepy and helpless. Some of these women today seem proud of their incompetence.

Screw the Feminists, SJW, Ds that think abortion on demand is a birth control method, but don't think of it as killing anyone.

I'm in Massachusetts & ready to move to Texas & know I'll need a gun to kill snakes, etc & never had one.
I'm looking forward to leaving & learning.

Very well said.
Please don't waste your time trying to change minds of stupid people. I've tried & all I hear are all those republicans that are going to ru pm suck, but I'm an independent & vote for best candidate. I talked to my older brother's ex last week.
It's a shame that at 65 & one of 4 children their parents had the smartest one is mentally retarded, has epilepsy & another affliction that I'll remember as soon as I post.

He is the only one but its a shame & he wasn't born that way. He had very high fever as baby & was sick & doctor didn't listen to his mother.

I bought the LCP, and I've never regretted doing so. Also, for another $150, you can outfit the Ruger with the very cool Viridian Green Dot laser with the auto-shutoff holster. Pull it and you've got a live laser. Slip it back into the holster and the laser turns off.

And add my own mini-rant.

It's not stupid women, it's stupid people, both genders (oh FFS there are only two, OK?).

And I'm sick of living in a state/country with these people, but esp. now, when I am actually harmed by their stupidity - the rule of law and the constitution being so eroded that one of their principal values (protection from practical consequences of living with stupid people) has almost disappeared.

How the f**k can this "state senator" from VT be viewed as any less stupid, insane, dangerous, and vile than the worst Klansman, the worst Nazi, the worst child-molester?

Good example of why/how I no longer view my fellow citizens as fellow citizens, really. I just happen to live here.

Thank you for the perspective.

Here's the thing - - I would be willing to bet that there are more vulnerable people dependent upon you, fly girl and I than upon the "senator" pictured above. I have some handicapped people who depend upon me and and my man to be there when they are needed. People who are connected to reality know the dangers and challenges of life and are ready and willing to meet it. People who are FOS are not.

A lot of people were killed with cap and ball revolvers.

Accuracy is more important than fire power.

I would rather hit a bad guy with one round from a cap and ball than miss him with 15 rounds from a modern pistol.

169 IMHO Best deal going now in handguns is the Beretta 92S- used Italian Police model- 299 bucks from the big online gun dealers (Southern Ohio Guns) etc.

I like CZ 82's and have a couple. The P64 is nice but the DA trigger pull is a little heavy for some people.

The 92S only come ith 1 mag but you can get extra 15 round Beretta mags online for 20 bucks or so.

Shotguns , just pick one. I have an old remington 870 I use for snakes and such outdoors.

I bought a 590 Mossberg last year with the 20 inch barrel and extended tube for extra rounds. Its nice. They had one with the door breacher barrel on it but I was afraid I'd cut myself on the thing so I got the other one.

If zombies are around, I go to the saiga-12 with the 20 round drum.

She got unelected in ....Vermont! Because that NRA was after her and said all kinds of mean things and lies about her.

Wherever you go, there is some busybody trying to mess with you. Most people aren't like that, at least where I live. There are a couple of busybodies down the street, but since my kids are out of school, I don't have to mess with them anymore (the one's a teacher at the high school).

People everywhere want to stick there nose, somehow, into your business. If they get elected to something, then you really have to watch out for them; political power corrupts everyone, eventually.

Vermont is so painfully white, it's funny. No rappers up there shooting each other left and right. Watching "Law and Order"is funny because it's always some clever white guy doing the crime. Sure.

Latest Black powder of mine is a Rogers and Spencer .44, made in Willowville NY between 1863/65.

Nice heavy REALLY accurate topstrap (solid frame like a modern revolver) that is an easy shooter.

There is some discussion as to whether they were used in the war due to the late arrival. No real definitive knowledge about that far as I'm aware.

I like the topstraps because of the strength and believe that is the secret to the accuracy--no flex and consistent cylinder alignment.

Dunno about $250 Smith ampersand Wessons, but of course as in all areas timing can be everything.

Indoor range I belong to had a Colt King Cobra snub-nose sitting there, andthe price seemed low. Consignment sale. I handled it, talked with the shop owner about it, and he agreed it was under-priced. It had a bobbed hammer, and handling marks (stainless snub model).

I left it there, and each week when I came in I checked, still there. Meanwhile I'd seen on Gunbroker where these models were going for multiples of the consignment sale price. So finally I bought it. Replacement hammer and three trips to Colt later (refinish, hammer replacement, chamber honing as one of them was very tight, brass would not eject),the thing is worth nearly 4 times what I have in it.

Which is uttermeaningless b.s. - becauseI'd never think of selling it. Of course I want to shoot it, and now (eventually)will spend more on a holster, andsome fancy wood grips.

FEE is more based on the work of Murray Rothbard. and supports economic freedom because it supports the advancement of classical liberalism.

219 The trapdoor was Stephen Vincent Benet's (Chief of Ordnance at the time, he who later wrote the ghastly line, "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee"), brainchild. Cavalry regiments had been buying Spencer repeaters out of their own funds (ie, pass the hat) since the Civil War, although Benet wanted a standardized breechloading shoulder arm for horse and foot branches of the Army.

Survivors of the 7th Cavalry never forgave him as they thought the Spencers might have saved the regiment.

Posted by: formwiz at March 30, 2015 11:10 AM (3rwvI)

220
I believe the Spencer was issued. Henrys were purchased by the troops during the Civil War.

The trapdoor was more an expedient design then a real advancement. Repeaters had been around since at least 1860, and breachloaders superior to the trapdoor. The trapdoor design allowed Civil War rifle muskets to be converted to breachloaders, a money saving decision. Later the 1873 trapdoor was a new rifle, using the same trapdoor design.

The Remington rolling block and the Sharps were contemporary single shot rifles that were probably superior to the trapdoor.

That said, the trapdoor carbine in the picture is nice looking.
