Gaming I guess

Short week as there isn't much coming out and news wise, there wasn't much other than Zelda isn't coming out in 2015 which leaves a big hole in their Christmas lineup. Nintendo only has two games announced so far that could to really move the needle. Star Fox which has so far been shown off as a smaller digital game and Xenoblade Chronicles X which would mean they would give it 8-ish months between it's Japanese (comes out next month) and Western releases. Though two weeks ago, they did announce their new "development platform" under the NX codename. It's notable that they called it a development platform instead of a new handheld or console which gives credence to the long held belief that their next console & handheld would be one in the same for the most part. Kinda makes you wonder if they will hold off on releasing a Zelda game for the WiiU and create a Twilight Princess situation where the game comes out on the old and next gen systems.

That being said, as for Nintendo as a whole, them finally listening to the shareholders lead to a very nice $5 share price bump (it hit up to $8 but evened out at $19 from $14) as they announced a partnership with DeNA which the West probably knows more as Mobage, one of the biggest names in mobile gaming. Basically, Nintendo will make the games while DeNA will do all the back-end system work. Considering Nintendo's forays into internet, this is the optimal setup. This is a pretty big turn for Iwata, after years of sticking his head into the sand, he's finally noticed the current gaming landscape. Will it save his job? Will it "save" Nintendo? Though it's a positive step, I don't see it. To make it work, they would have to go full bore on mobile. And even then, they're selling to a marketplace that really doesn't know or care about Mario. Only Pokemon is their real ace in the hole for cracking mobile. I personally wouldn't say no to a mobile Fire Emblem game though. I think their stock price is too high but I'm cautiously optimistic on their future, especially if Iwata gets what he deserves (not going to happen with the way he's surrounded himself with yes men on the board).

NEWS

ArcadeHero with a nice writeup on Amusement Expo 2015. The whole Predator pinball thing....eeesh

So yeah, Zelda isn't coming out this year. A sales rep said it also wouldn't be at E3 but well, that came from a sales rep, something no one should trust. Not saying I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't show up but I can't say I've ever talked to a sales rep who knew their elbow from their asshole.

In your delusional pea sized brain, I could see swatting someone in a competitive multiplayer game but Minecraft? Really? And a 13 year old too boot. I miss the old days of people just cutting off someone's electricity right before something big happens.

With GenCon having been shit since Hasbro stopped running it, them sperging about the RFRA doesn't surprise me. Shoulda never left Milwaukee.

So too many people with cash to burn don't remember how bad the Toejam & Earl games were, especially after the second stage.

NEW RELEASES

There isn't much of anything being released this week.

Story of Seasons (3DS) - The legit new Harvest Moon game made by the team who has made almost every other Harvest Moon game (Lost Valley was a Natsume thing). Like all Harvest Moon games, it's all about banging bitches and making paper. Plant some crops, milk your cows and hit on the local girls till you get married and have a kid so you have some free labor. This is back to basics Harvet Moon game which is a refreshing change up. There is some new Animal Crossing style online trading but it's all about reminding you how awesome this series is. I personally really like the series, especially if you skip a few games here and there. Now if Marvelous could make a full featured Harvest Moon for my phone, I'd be even more happy but as is, I've got this game pre-ordered.

MLB 15: The Show (PS4, PS3, Vita) - Your only option if you want to actually play a MLB baseball game. Can't say I'm a big fan of the series as the rhythm over the course of a game never feels right. They've been saying that they're aiming to fix online play but they've been saying that for the last few years. The whole sports genre is just straight up bunk these days.

Toukiden: Kiwami (PS4, Vita) - Eh, it's an updated version of last years decent but not remarkable Toukiden be it this time it's getting a Western exclusive PS4 version of the game. It's mash of musou & monster hunter in a grimdark fantasy setting with giant bosses that inevitably feels very empty. New stuff is 2 new characters, a couple new weapons and crossplay between the Vita & PS4. Personally, unless you need this for the PS4, I'd just buy last year's game which has been in the bargain bin for awhile now.

1 I just got a LoL on WoW as I was going through the 2/3 of pets I *don't* have. Moon-Moon is now a pet drop at Darkmoon fair. I wouldn't have known anything about Moon-Moon if it weren't for a recent(ish) ONT.

The first one was good, though if you think about it it was really a dressed up version of Rogue.

10 Heh, Moon-Moon is an awesome pet There is another wave of pets from old Burning Crusade raids as well, if you are interested, Polly. Since even a 90 can solo them all with relative ease but for a few spots where you have to pay attention, you can probably snap them all up in a few weeks.

My transition to Windows 8.1 on my gaming rig was mostly successful. I'm having some problems with my Asus Sonar DSX audio card which is not surprising as Asus/C-Media hasn't provided a new driver for it since 2013. I was using the UNi Sonar driver (recommended by users in the Amazon comments) without issue under Windows 7. Under Windows 8, however, the analog out capability just disappears after several reboots which necessitates a driver re-installation.

Still playing WOW?

I lost interest after the last Expansion... they killed the low level play... and there are no alternate quests once you do the now necessary level up quests...

Did just pick up Destiny which is kind of fun...

16 Public Service Announcement:

For those on old hardware, (Xbox 360), they will be offering four Games With Gold for free next month.

- Gears of War: Judgment ($19.99 ERP): Available from April 1-15.
- Terraria ($14.99 ERP): Available from April 1-15.
- Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag ($29.99 ERP): Available from April 16-31.
- Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel ($19.99 ERP): Available from April 16-31.

I'm not an Assassin's Creed fan, but other than that? Not too shabby for free.

I've only leveled one toon since the expansion (a troll doing Blood Elf quests since Son and I were helping Middlest Kidlet level her first ever toon). Since we started doing dungeons as soon as possible to get the achievements for the guild so I don't know how the experience has changed.

18 since I am capable of making games, but only very basic (heh) games.... I guess I'm allowed to play interactive fiction and anything in the arcades as of 1980. There's no evidence Zoe Quinn is capable of Pong. Maybe not even of playing it.

I've been tinkering with a Roguelike port lately. As an RPG it will be turn-based, so attached to a Timer control (rather than to, say, a Background Worker). Currently sorting out how to disassociate that timer from the graphics, as it's overly complex as is.

20 Ok, what is wrong with gaming? Admittedly, I'm not in anyone's demographics, but I enjoy video games. There aren't any good ones being released. I'm playing Skyrim again because there is nothing that looks good. I will play through Fallout again after this.

I'm playing Dragon Age:Inquisition and think it would appeal to Skyrim or Mass Effect fans. Reminds me a bit of Morrowind, where if some fight is too tough now (especially the dragons, never the pushover they become in Skyrim) you leave and try again after you've leveled up and got better weapons.

Posted by: waelse1 at March 29, 2015 05:56 PM (4uEze)

25 Yes, I was a big fan of "Bioshock Infinite!" It gets very challenging by the end, though.

Posted by: Kensington (@NYKensington) at March 29, 2015 06:13 PM (YZcNj)

26 So I've been playing "White Night" this week. It's a survival horror/puzzle game with a nifty black-and-white aesthetic.

And it's pretty good. The only problem is that it has a lot of glitches, and halfway through the game I hit one that broke the game completely, leaving me no option but to start over from the beginning.

That was annoying.

27 "You should play Depression Quest. It's the best game ever, trust me. It's not like I'm having sex with the author or anything."

Yes! Or you could try "Gone Home!" It looks like a horror game, but it's really just a walking simulator with gay-friendly themes.

So, you know, GAME OF THE YEAR!!!1!

28 Good on Games With Gold! They're finally releasing some games I don't already own, (besides the shit platformers they release the rest of the time).

I love Skyrim, but jeez, I can only play through naked with a dagger and a bow so many times. On the plus side, I look a lot better naked in Skyrim than I do in real life.

A LOT better.

29 I haven't bought much this year so far but yesterday I did get Mario Party 10 since the kids were wanting some mini-game stuff. I've never owned or played an MP game before but it is fun. Still lacks useful online stuff of course.

I am disappointed in no Zelda U this year and like everyone else hopes this means that Starfox U will be amazing; I bought a U in part for XCX so looking forward to that. I also imagine that Nintendo will drop those "Project Guard" games that Miyamoto was working on to help pad things up (I guess there is Yoshi's game but I don't care). Also, there is Devil's Third coming sometime soon and I am intrigued by that, not because I care about Itagaki, I just find the online stuff for that one looking like it could be fun.

As for Predator pinball - at least there were only 250 pre-orders and he was caught before it got worse. Some still think the project might be saved but I think a sword should be stuck through this one and people move on to other games, like the upcoming Alien pinball.

I'm with waelse1. I've been playing Dragon Age Inquisition since it's release date. I'm on my third playthrough. This time as a two handed warrior. I tend to play rogue so a tank has been a challenge. DAI is a big, beautiful world. If you like story driven RPGs, (in my opinion) Bioware can't be beat. Mass Effect was an incredible trip through all three games.

I just bought Bloodborne and I think I'm going to trade it back in. Tired of getting my ass handed to me. It definitely reminds me of why I hated Dark Souls.

So I've gone back to DAI to attempt to kill dragons.

Posted by: Usedtocould at March 29, 2015 06:52 PM (Mjx2z)

31 I'll try DAI. I also played through all of Mass Effect, so if DAI is good I wont start playing through Doom.

I watched a little of Bloodborne on twitch.tv, seeing people die over and over and...yeah.

There was an IGN vid on YouTube showing how to make Viveanne a magical tank to help with big fights. Not only do the dragons have a ton of health, but sometimes when they get in trouble they scream and their youngins' come running to help Mommy.

36 If you do get dragon age inquisition be prepared. Bioware, who has always been in the sjw camp went all out in it. In previous games there was a little bit where you could sleep with someone of the same sex if you wanted to. And then in dragon age 2 there was the prostitute elf that looked female but once you spoke to it was clearly a male. Inquisition you now have the completely gay Mage in Dorian. As well as another character that is a woman that if sex changes were possible in an ancient world full of dragons and demons would be going under the knife.

38 Anybody else playing Pillars of Eternity? 22 hours in I'm having one of my all-time best experiences gaming. If you liked Baldur's Gate Or Planescape or Icewind Dale, they've taken everything great about those games and removed or re-imagined the creakier and pain-in-the-ass aspects of those games, and it's just a blast to play!
