This is what you get when control of your state legislature is divided:

I like it!

Here's a round up of what New Mexico's legislature did.

Governor Martinez was trying to get them to repeal issuing drivers licenses to illegals, but they failed.

2 It is damned hard to get people who get paid to pass bills to repeal one. Perhaps if your State has a voter ballot initiative you could make their salary inversely proportional to the amount of bills they pass.

That sounds like a good idea to me, because we are drowning in laws now. As the saying goes, "If the only tool you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail." Legislators gotta legislate, and too many of them seem to believe that there is no problem that can't be fixed by passing a new law.

I tell him its his patriotic duty to oppose bad legislation, and so far as I was concerned, I would be perfectly happy if he spent a long and illustrious career doing nothing but voting "No" on bad ideas. I have frankly no idea what goes on in New Mexico's State Legislature, but I have to go with Door #2. Less stuff accomplished means less interference in our daily lives. There are probably meaningful things to do, but there is too much justification for these people being in the government, messing with things they don't understand and keeping their phoney-baloney jobs.

DaveA is right - gridlock only slows the ratchet (usually).

Of course, if the GOP in a state if essentially worthless (often the case, though probably less than at the national level, where things are far worse than even the apologists/inertialists seem ready to admit to themselves), then ..... not a big difference.

For those populous states where the legislative situation is hopeless, regardless of party control or split, where is the lawfare?

Yes, a "constitutional" system that can square equal protection and affirmative action - at any level, in any respect, even once - is an unserious capricious system. But it still contains tools/weapons that can be turned on it to stymie it.

Why no lawfare over illegals' driving licences? Or over ALL outrageous lawlessness concerning illegals? Time to take Prop 187 up the chain again, somewhere, hope for a good ruling in some circuit that can at least push back the idiocy a tiny bit?

What's wrong with one law for everyone? Why does every little fiefdom, hamlet, village, township, and circuit court have it's own version of the law.

This is out of control. No one knows what the law is, what the law says, what the law means, and it all depends on where you stand at the moment. Even the lawyers can't agree until a judge has announced what his interpretation of the law is and even then it is not settled until it goes to a higher court, or a different judge or jurisdiction. Even the US Supreme Court decisions don't settle the law because someone else in some other case immediately brings a new twist and the whole insane merry go round spins and twirls while the dancers dance, and the speakers speak. and in the end :

Today, legislation is written by staffers, lobbyists, and think tanks. The elected "legislator" doesn't write a damn thing. All he does is vote on it. We're lucky if he even bothers to read it.

When I was a licensed SRO we were required to get a physical every two years but due to the crappy way the regulation was written we really had to do it every year. And it WAS reported to the government.

Since our main grocery store is Walmart here you have to avoid it Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon. And even Thursdays are starting to fill up. I used to go very early on Sunday morning but they started blocking many of the aisles for cleaning and could get to a lot of the stuff.

Years ago I had a bright idea that I'd hit the Super Wal-Mart late at night/early in the morning. Avoid all the people.

Well, late night/early morning they cut the checkers down to nothing. Two maybe three. So, there weren't a lot of us there but we still had to stand in line for a while to get checked.

Bluebirds are nice to look at and are ground feeders for bugs. Martins eat mosquito and you see a lot of Martin Gourds around here. Hummingbirds eat flying bugs but you use a liquid feeder to attract them. Bats are also good for getting rid of flying bugs.

Yeah, I could do that. The thing is that I didn't expect to pay much at all with my current income.

I just can't figure out how I am expected to live on what I make - I currently live with my parents (paying them some money and helping with a family weekend job in addition to my regular one) but I can't keep doing that much longer and rent around here is pretty high. I'm not likely to get a raise anytime soon, and the guy who owns the small business I work for is getting pretty frustrated with an increasingly demanding clientele and is actively working on starting another business in a completely different industry anyway, so who knows how long my job will last anyway...

The US aviation industry does not have privacy rights regarding physical health. FAR 121 Air Carriers require a Class I physical valid for six months. The physical must be administered by an FAA certified physician, and pilots over forty years must have an electrocardiogram each physical.

There is no specific mental testing requirement, but most go the same physician every six months, and the physicians are trained to look for anomalies based upon previous examinations.

Also, all 121 "for hire" pilots will be longer be certified in good physical health beyond the age of 60. Fedzilla cannot rescind the pilot license, but they will not certify the physical which means mandatory retirement at 60.

I had a friend who had a heart attack while flying. The plane continued to fly out to sea until it splashed.

I note that the Navy did NOT launch a no-expense-is-too-high to recover the plane and my friend's body. I guess he just wasn't as important as John-John.

Oh, I am a tiler, with about a year and a half of experience. I have to get a lot faster to be worth more to my employer, and that is unlikely to be happening soon.

As for prospects, I have an M.A. in medieval history and so ought to be able to teach at least, but after spending a couple years unemployed without even a nibble in my field (not even the local tutoring folks were interested!) I'm not optimistic about my chances for a better job anytime soon.

That is a very serious offense, but men will go to great lengths to avoid facing the truth. My best friend was a certified physician in Atlanta for over 40 years performing primarily for Delta and American. He would confront someone with elevated pressure and other symptoms and demand a workup to ascertain heart health.

The pilot could either submit willingly or would become confrontational with questions about loss of family income, etc., but he never succumbed to the threats or attempted bribes.

In some instances, the workups did more good than harm and allowed the patient to received treatment prior to a heart problem instead of waiting until the event. For those men, it was a good experience. They could take a leave of absence and return to duty later.

A more pressing problem for the physician was alcoholism and drug abuse. He confronted this on numerous occasions, and would work with the air carrier to place the patient in long term care to save his career.

He was a good man who left early, and was a great friend to the aviation community who depend on physical health to continue their jobs.

If you're a tiler, maybe you could hone your skills and continue to develop a portfolio by doing some projects that folks could buy on Etsy. That way if you lose your job you could at least still have a professional presence and small income stream.

I almost wonder if there's some sort of cool tie in you could make to your medieval history interests (didn't they make a lot of mosaics?).

Not knowing what type of schedule you're working now, another thought would be to see if you could volunteer with a group that does restorations of churches and/or stately homes. Again, you'd be honing your skill while mixing with people who might have similar interests in history... might turn into something.

If you have decent writing skills (I'm guessing you do if you have a history degree), you might also look into trying to break into non-profits, especially history related or museum related.

We have enough work to keep very busy where I am - Asheville is a hot-spot right now for remodeling. The problem is that I am just not that good at it yet, and of course manual labor is cheap (I am competing, indirectly, with a lot of illegals after all). We had a rough start to winter as it went 18 below zero right after Thanksgiving . Stayed real winter until about mid January and really nice since. Winter a year ago was record snow. Stared blowing like crazy a couple of hours ago - up to 60 MPH they predict.

Grey, if you are trying to find side jobs, see if there's a nextdoor dot com in your area and sign up - it's free and easy - where I am, people are constantly asking for recommendations for work like that. Some of my contractor buddies have done very well with it.

As for the games and the tournament, I would rather get my teeth pulled than watch a college basketball game, but the only thing interesting about this year's event is the possibility of a team going the whole season undefeated.

I generally hate when underdogs win, so I'm rooting for Kentucky, in spite of the Judd factor.

I take it you are not a fan... being from Missouri, I generally have no rooting interest for any college team, but am always glad when Kansas loses.

There was an Indiana team in the 70s that went undefeated. Coached by a guy, if news reports are to be believed, liked choking college boys.

I always wanted to do a telling of Wat Tyler's revolt (heh, you being a Tiler and all) from the ground level. I was always intrigued by the supposed Templar/Masonic connection, and the claimed involvement of Wycliff and the Lollards.
For that matter, the story of Jan Ziska and the Moravian movement is fascinating as well.
However I bet you could do a better Robin Hood story than Sir Walter Scott.

The Japanese have increased use of robots, instead of increasing immigration. I suspect they see the abuses going on here in the name of "immigration" and recoiled in horror. But robots are a more cost effective solution. An alternative like that would stop billionaire big govt types from undermining and coopting conservative politics on immigration policy, since they wouldn't need it anymore to maximize profit.

Texas is booming now and I'm sure that you could find a teaching position. I live in the suburbs north of Dallas. Toyota is relocating their headquarters here, State Farm is finishing up their new headquarters that will house 10,000 employees, and Raytheon is building a huge new facility next to State Farm. There are big office buildings going up everywhere.

I'm sure that the cost of living is less here than in Asheville, but the scenery and summers kind of suck.
