I'm listening to the podcast and here is Dana Perino, former White House press secretrary and now right wing pundit on Fox News talking about the time she admitted to the press that the "Mission Accomplished" sign wasn't a good idea. Of course, to her surprise, the media was plastered the next day with "White House admits Mission Accomplished was wrong".
"Mission Accomplished", for those who don't remember, was the banner flown on an aircraft carrier as it returned from the war in Iraq after it successfully completed it's mission along with the other forces which won the war in 30 days. That, for those too stupid to recognize it - like Dana Perino - is a Mission Accomplished.
Of course, in some latte sipping circles the imagery of George Bush in a flight suit under a Mission Accomplished banner was just too much to take. They floated the meme that because Iraq didn't immediately turn into Ohio that the banner was a lie. All they needed to confirm this narrative is an authoratative voice on the right. Thanks, Dana Perino.
How can we possibly be trusted to run the country when we can't even hire marginally competent people for key positions?

If I recall correctly, that 'Mission Accomplished' banner had to do with that particular aircraft carrier returning from an exceedingly long deployment at the time.

Seems pretty clear that Lemmen screwed something up in the foreground and couldn't fix it, so he added a "shadowy figure" in the foreground. It ruins what would otherwise be a beautiful painting.
I'm not crazy about the geometric shadow cast by the gaslight either.

Spent several yrs in that hellish area on WESTPACS and "World" cruises (USS Enterprise). The guys on the the USS Abraham Lincoln deserved that banner and much more. The regular WESTPACS were hard work - those boys did plenty of extra work. "Mission Accomplished" was entirely fitting - I would have added a "BZ" to it.

Uh, I'd argue that wikipedia is just as accurate as any text book and/or other source written by academia and sent down to K-12 to propagandize to the chil'ren.
They should all try my old trick when I was told I can't use wikipedia -- go to wikipedia, grab what you want, then cite the original source for the information (which should be footnoted at the bottom of the article.)

Maybe our home brewed fracking revolution would have happened decades ago if there was real economic pressure due to middle east oil interruptions. I don't know.
But during the Suez Canal crises we basically told the Brits and the French to go fuck themselves and that we were going to run shit in the ME. That was a huge mistake, and we've had hundreds of off-ramps since then, but we continue to stay involved in this tribal / religious bullshit that has been a staple of the middle east since the beginning of civilization.
And we get NOTHING out of it other "stability" in the oil market, which clearly does not exist if you've watched the price of a gallon of gasoline over the last 20 years.

You're missing the point. You know who needed the oil more than we did? Europe and Asia.
I don't remember Sweden and Japan sending troops to Saudi Arabia to defend against Saddam.
So why did we? We get / got very little oil from the middle east. Most of our oil comes from the US, Canada, Venezuela, and Mexico. Europe and Asia rely heavily on the middle east.
We don't have colonies in the ME, we didn't seize the wells and make them our own. We just decided to get involved for the hell of it.
I think that mindset is wrong and has only lead to further headaches for us.
Also, Saudi + Kuwait + Iraq does not equal the majority of the worlds oil reserves. The Americas alone match those 3 countries' known reserves, not to mention Africa, Asia, and the Russians and all of the unknown reserves suspected to be in the artic regions.

For the same reason we cared about Europe in 1941, Germany in 1948-49, and Korea in 1951. We are not an island. Well, we sort of are, a very big one, but you get the point. Bad things that happen in one place affect other places, including us.

My point is that these problems don't have to be OUR problems and that we've involved ourselves in an unsolvable mess in the middle east.
And if the point was to keep oil prices steady, well... defending Kuwait did not stabilize world oil prices, they have sky rocketed since the early 1990s. And continued to after our invasion of Iraq in 2004 or whatever.
And it turns out that sky rocketing oil prices actually meant we'd be developing a lot more oil domestically, which has been the over arching goal of our "national energy policy" since the 70s.
So all of our middle eastern interventions -- if you assume the goal was to stabilize the world market for oil -- have not only done the opposite of what they said they would (keep oil dirt cheap), but have hindered our own ability to develop our own reserves by using fracking (which again, has existed for decades. It was just never cost effective until recently.)

No, at the end of 2007 the ME was looking pretty good. Iraq was stable, Iran was boxed in, many new semi-democratic regimes were on the cusp of being born, including a possible one in Iran, etc. For some reason, starting in 2008, it all went south. What could it have been?

You seem to assume that they'd have stayed stable absent our intervention. That's a big assumption. The most important thing in stabilizing oil prices, after supply, is the dependability of the supply.
The ME is not a dependable place. I see no evidence that we destabilized it, and plenty that we stabilized it.

European countries have militaries. So do other middle eastern countries.
But you brought up gulf war one, my original point was with gulf war two.
My overall point is that any time there is a problem in the world, everyone expects us to try to fix it. With my money. And because government sucks at everything, we never manage to fix anything, just waste a ton of money on an ungrateful world that sits around in coffee shops bitching about american imperialism.
So maybe it's wiser and more prudent to let the middle east figure its own shit out without us getting involved. The best case scenario for us is that the British or French go back in to colonial mode. But that has never been the character of our country, and we SUCK at it. We are horrible occupiers. Which is fine. Let someone else worry about it, or let the backwards desert dwellers figure it out on their own.
I'm sick of wasting american blood and money on intractable problems and getting nothing but grief about it.
...And all of this meddling comes out of a Wilsonian idea of US foreign policy, where we use our military to influence world events to create a worldwide progressive utopia. This is not conservatism. It's progressivism. Which is why the biggest backers of these wars are always the progressive foreign policy "experts" who are wrong on just about every prediction they make.

I surmise that this one of the reasons Russia is expanding. NATO is in decline, everybody decided that the next great land conflict in Europe was avoided and went on to other things.
So Russia is going back, and this time, there's a vacuum and a shitty US President. AND a European reliance on Russian fuel products.
Russi has some of the advantages that it had when it was the USSR (focused leadership, larger size, continental access) and its foes have been downgrading for decades. And the Atlantic ocean hasn't gotten any smaller.

Spinning drives tend to fail when left sitting for a long time.
As for brand --- eh, they're all manufactured in the same handful of factories in Thailand and China.
I'm partial to western digital, but if you get a great deal on another brand I'd go for it.
For solid state drives, Samsung and Intel make the best ones... but they're also the most expensive. Any would work fine for what you're trying to do it.
Thumb drive will be cheapest / smallest / least likely to fail option in my opinion though

They show only a 10% change between real and nominal, in the last 10 years... even the low ball government numbers say inflation is much more than that...

It allows a multi national company, to transfer in existing workers, and grants them a visa. They are supposed to have been working for the company for a year... and in the past they were not supposed to displace American workers...
But those limits are pretty much gone...
H1B were for American companies to bring in NEW workers...

L1 allows spouses to work as well. So Rajeev gets the L1, his wife has a work permit too. So when you read X amount of L1s were issued, it's really 2X number of visas were issued.
Obama also changed the prevailing wage requirement. Used to be on L1 (and H1) you had to pay a foreign worker a prevailing wage. This was abused, but at least there was a preteense of paying American wages. Rajeev replaced the guy making $80K a year and make $40K a year. Now, Rajeev can be paid $15K a year, legally since Obama waied the prevailing wage requirement.
And a final bonus...unlike H1B, there is no limit to the number of L1 visas issued. And there is also no limit to how many times an L1 can be renewed. So it's basically a green card for potentially every human on the planet.
And while we can blame Obama for this, the GOP is full onboard with it.

It was impossible for Bush not to invade Iraq.
He was the type of person who took the "preserve and protect" thing seriously in the oath of office.
Saddam was already maxed out with sanctions, the UN was calling on the US to back it's proclamations with actions, every security service in the world was confirming Iraq was hiding chemical weapons and trying to reconstitute their nuke program.
Anyone other than Obama in the same circumstances would pull the trigger.
It was the right bet. Iraq was a relatively well educated secular nation and the ideal candidate for a sea change if Saddam was taken out. It appeared that everything was going to work out with the blue finger voting, but mistakes were made and everything fell apart.
However, just because things went to shit afterwards, it doesn't mean the initial call was wrong.

Thanks. I mean, they knew what they were signing up for, but it's beyond disheartening to see how the whole Iraq situation turned out.
And in a lot of ways, it was predictable. Because we either need to go in on a mission to destroy everything or not go at all. This hearts and minds bullshit is what lead to my buddy driving a humvee over an IED while trying to make friends among the locals. And clearly we didn't do too well winning hearts and minds if you look at what's going on in Iraq and even Afghanistan right now.

Allegedly Saudia Arabia helped finance the Pakistani's nuclear program with the understanding that if they ever needed some nukes, Pakistan would deliver them.
Not sure if that agreement is still in play, but now that Obama has officially outed the Israelis as having nukes, and now that Iran got the nod to get nukes... yeah, I have a feeling we're going to see a nuclear arms race.
Once the Sauds have a nuke, the Egyptians will want one. And that'll open the flood gates to everyone else.
Plus, dictators have seen that we have no problem disposing non-nuclear dictators, but we don't do shit to nuclear dictators.

Japan CAN'T send troops. Even the minimal support that they provided (which was purely logistical) during our follow-up excursions in the Middle-East were questionable. And why can't Japan send troops?
Because their constitution contains a clause stating that they can't. And that clause was written by US after their surrender at the end of World War 2. In exchange for not nuking their islands, we told them that they couldn't invade anyone anymore. So they no longer needed a military. And we'd take care of their defense from then on.
The JSDF only came into existence following the start of the Korean War. And up until recently, even coming to the aid of an allied country that was under attack wasn't allowed under their rules governing military force (that's currently being changed). So sending troops to the Gulf to assist against Saddam Hussein wasn't going to happen. And the reason why is because the United States made it a violation of their constitution.

Excellent. Remember, what we are hoping for is to maximize the number of dead Muslims. The best chance of this is is a long, drawn out war with many casualties and few results. The model we should strive to implement is Verdun, the Somme or Paaschendale. Maybe those Shiite militias will be back for the second battle of Tikrit. Or the third. Or the fifth.
The Muslims seem to be compelled to kill people. If we can nudge them in the direction of killing each other instead of us, that seems like the best we can hope for.
